We’ve noticed before that on the Premier League telecasts they seem to look for bad fouls that were not given and keep showing the video again and again.
Yohan Cabaye – Pardew defends his player
That happened in the Manchester City vs Tottenham game, and it ended up with Balotelli getting a four match ban, but long before that game was over the two commentators had Mario out for four games – and they had shown the incident 205 times.
And almost the same thing happened in our game on Saturday afternoon, when Yohan Cabaye clashed with El-Abd of Brighton – but in that case they couldn’t find too much wrong with the challenge – at least that’s the commentary we had over here in the US.
We put an article out last night on this – and took it very lightly – but it seems to be getting a lot of attention today.
Surely Yohan Cabaye will not be punished for the clash, and El-Abd had a cut lip but it looked a little scratch at best.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has come out and said he is disappointed with the telecast’s concentration on the incident, and has defended the French International:
“I thought it was unfair.” “The guy was coming towards him and he was trying to keep him away.” “There’s no malice in that.”
“I’m disappointed that the TV highlight that, I really am.” “Yohan is not that type of person. Perhaps there wasn’t enough incidents in the game and they wanted to try to find something.”
“As far as I’m concerned, he’s done nothing wrong.”
It would be ironic if Cabaye is banned for three games – which would be tragic for the Newcastle team – after he was stretchered off during the recent 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, after what looked like a terrible tackle by Shaun Derry, who received only a yellow card for the challenge.
We just have to hope that no new news comes out about this incident – but it’s looking like the game of football is changing and becoming more like a no-contact sport these days.
If only referees were more clear on which tackles are allowed and which aren’t these days – we’d all be a lot better off – including the players.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Hope he doesn’t get a match ban. Didn’t see any malice in the supposed “stamp” and surely if he had meant to hit him, he would have given him more than a little graze on his chin.

Comment #6There’s been a number of occasions this season where I felt he could have got a straight red. The type of game he plays doesn’t need that sort of type. It’s easy to say he’s not that sort of guy, but he’s always one of the most fiery players on the pitch. Hopefully nothing comes of this.

I would say Roberto Mancini will have a lot to say to the f.a if they dont ban him.
After Ballotelli getting a 4 game ban.

Comment #8Ok then with 36 hours until the window closes I think the likelihood of signing anybody is getting smaller and smaller, but I’m ever positive and think we will get at least 2. I would like to know who you think we could/should bid for. I think the following:
Douglas – FC Twente – CB – Out of contract in the Summer so could get him tomorrow a lot cheaper than last week if nobody else bids for him. Newastle’s interest will have alerted other clubs to scout him and waiting till the summer to get him on a free will be too late.
Yanga-Mbiwa – Montepellier – CB – The club are 2nd in the French Leauge so if we wait until the Summer we may not get him or he will be a lot more expensive to buy. This one is deffinatley a now or never deal. Can play RB so he would get lots of games.
Moamed Diame – Wigan – DM – I think he is a real player and he is available on a free in the Summer but again we shouldn’t wait until then. I really think he could push Tiote for a starting spot, he could provide cover for the great man and what a pairing the 2 would be if we need to close out a win. Senegal have been eliminated so we could get him now.
Jr. Hoilett – Backburn – RW/LW – Don’t need to say much do I?!
I really honestly think we could these 4 for about £14 million and it would take our team to the net level. It won’t happen but is realistic. Whou would you buy?

Comment #9I thought the same thing when I was watching the match as Ed did here, I was thinking why are they even talking about this, and keep showing it over and over? First of all, as a commentator, your job is to just talk about the action on the pitch, stay out of other aspects of the game cos you have to be neutral, stop trying to influence peoples thoughts and provoke punishments. Just talk about the action on the pitch and to be honest, without sounding biased, I really didn’t think much of the challenge. And, to prove I’m not being biased, I didn’t think Balotelli’s was that bad either, definitely didn’t deserve a 4 match ban!

Comment #10@ post 8. Rhys Williams from Boro still for me. He could do at least 4 of the jobs of the players you have listed. It would also really irritate the Smoggies fans.

to be honest if ashley splashed the cash a little bit more and we could bring in Douglas, Hoilett and Mbiwa in this window we could offset the cost by selling simpson, best and getting token fee for loven. Colo could be our back up cdm so we could let Perch go to. could we get 6m for that lot????? then we have only spent 8m which was our budget

Nice mathematics bring in three and get rid of four from an already thin squad.
I’m glad you have nothing to do with the squad.
As for the kick, in my opinion yes Yohan meant to kick out, just lucky at the time he did not make better contact or it could have been a lot worse for both players.
Possible cause of the frustration the refs lack of action through the game for not acting on what were some professional fouls that were allowed to go unpunished.
El Abd’s tackle was shown in the slow mo to be nothing more than a cynical professional blocking tackle, little attempt to get the ball, instead just a step in and body check the player with the ball and deliberately tangle up with the attacking player bringing him and the attack to a halt.
Cabaye had suffered more that one of these tackles from El Abd and the ref did nothing so the frustration was understandable.
Although this will not detract from the fact that he did kick out and will in all probability be punished for it.

Comment #16“Yohan is not that type of person.”
I love Yohan but he does have a mean streak in him…in like hos second game he raked his studs down Bardsleys leg and seems to know how to leave a print on people and get away with it.
But I dont think he meant to kick the guy in the face, he been bundled over and he was landing on top of him so was just natural reaction to keep the guy off him.

Comment #17Officially charged with violent conduct now and has until tomorrow night to answer. I agree with @robby bobson comment above. Some people may say its just desserts for previous incidence he has got away with but for me this has been a total witch hunt by the tabloids crying out for his blood and no where near as bad a Balotelli’s the other week! I can agree with everyone that after watching the video he has anger in his face but u think that is for the tackle and way they’ve went done. I don’t think he has deliberately meant to hurt the player and it’s just a tangle of legs. I see no force in his leg to kick out… and I’m not just saying it because I’m a Newcastle supporter, I would say it in any other circumstance.

Comment #18It will do him good if he gets a ban as we cannot afford to have both Cabaye and Tiote giving away free kicks and collecting cards all the time.
I agree with the others in that he needs a rest and it will be interesting to see what happens if Guthrie is given a more attacking role in front of Tiote.

Comment #19Cabaye is a dirty player when he wants to be, especially if things arent going right he gets quite petulant. Bardsley, Spearing, now this, definite ban coming me thinks.
