Ivory Coast Through To The Semi-Finals

The Ivory Coast beat Equatorial Guinea last night 3-0 and advanced to the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations.

Drogba scores first goal for the Ivory Coast last night

But Cheick Tiote was on the bench as two goals from Didier Drogba and one from Yaha Toure was enough to see the side through to the semi-finals on Wednesday night.

They will meet the winners of tonight’s game between Gabon and Mali in that semifinal game.

After a slow start, the Ivory Coast began to increase the pace of the game and were awarded a penalty after 29 minutes, but goalkeeper Danilo saved Didier Drogba’s spot kick.

But they still went ahead after with a goal from the Chelsea striker after 36 minutes, and held that lead at the break.

Another goal from Droba doubled their lead  when he headed the ball into the net from  Yaya Toure’s free-kick after 69 minutes, and then the Manchester City player scored the third goal with just 9 minutes to play.

Arsenal’s Gervinho, former Leed United winger Max Gradel and Kolo Toure were all in the Ivory Coast side that started the game last night.

In tonight’s remaining quarterfinal games, it’s Ghana vs. Tunisia and Gabon vs. Mali.

The Ivory Coast are now  strong favorites to win the Cup,  and the form of Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba last night suggested they could rather easily win this tournament on Sunday, when the final is played.

Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote was involved in the first two group games, but seems to have been on the bench in the last couple of games.

The Ivory Coast’s advance means that Cheick Tiote will miss the game at Tottenham next Saturday,  but will be back for the next game at home to Wolves on February 25th.

Shay Given isn’t fit to wipe Tim Krul’s arse!

I hope we play Vukic or Abeid with Guthrie instead of Perch.

Oh yea and fk off Shola

They are certs to win that. such a good team. So many options.

Can’t wait to get Cheick back though, everything that is good about our team now is epitomised in Cheick.

Benry, agree that Krul is better now, but Given kept them in it down there earlier in the season with 2 wonder saves. He is still one of the best.

He needs first team football but I would love Shay here as our number 2.

He scores goals at the Gallowgate, CISSE CISSE.

Ellis Short paid for his flight but he wouldn’t go to the stadium of shite, DEMBA CISSE NEWCASTLE’S NUMBER 9!

Although I’d like to see Cisse from the start alongside Ba, I don’t it’ll happen. So for that reason I think we might start with this team:

    Krul
    Simpson collo Williamson santon
    Raylor Guthrie perch jonas
    HBA
    Ba

The onus is on us to go forward today. Reallyu hope HBA isn’t sacrificed if we finally see both Demba’s on the pitch. He can find their runs, and if Jonas is in the centre i will be gutted, he is shocking there, and wasn’t much better on the left. Looks like he needs a rest.

tdt, looks canny to me, with papiss, Obertan and one of Gosling/Abeid/Vuckic to come on

Think there is a good chance though that Best will get dropped for Ba in the only change, as Shola and Ba destroyed Man U.

Villa full backs a re suspect at best, thats where we can have success today. Which is why your team looks canny (would like Obertan in though) HBA can defo make the difference in the right position.Advanced role, just off the striker.

    —————–Krul——————
    Simmo—-Willo—Colo—-Santon
    Obertan——-Guthrie——-Jonas
    —————HBA————-
    ———Ba———Best/Shola—–

Would be a canny side, although would love to see Papiss start with Demba.

And can honestly see HBA being dropped completely today along with Best.

Really think pardew will start with Obertan today like benny has been poor it’s all about competition for places so form must decide who plays. I would like to see

    Simpson – willo – collo – santon

    Raylor – Guthrie – Abeid – gutti

    HBA
    Ba

    Can’t see it happening tho

Yaya Toure’s fk was unreal!!! the ball must’ve gone 2 yards outside the wall before swerving back onto the inside of the post. And to top it all off, there wasnt much of a run up,just a casual 2-3 steps and then bang 🙂 If you didnt see it,I suggest you look for it.
A hardfought 2-0 today,we’ll need the grafters in this weather so go on Perch,Raylor,Jonas and fight for MoM.

Benry you mug, none of the things you said are true. Shay Given is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time and Krul has said himself that he wouldn’t be half the keeper he is now without Shay.
Perch was one of the reasons we held out for the 3 points against Blackburn, taking Ben Arfa off for him at half time gave us stability to withstand the endless corners. He’s improved over the season and I’m not too worried about him as back-up, although he was awful at CB against Norwich.
As for Shola, all I can say is that Benry you are no fan of Newcastle ‘UNITED’ if you behave in that way towards a loyal player who has spent his entire career at Newcastle and given his all as a faithful back-up striker. Although I think Pardew should not be starting him, you’re no better than the racists if you treat him like that. Learn some respect.

The Ivory Coast is the only team with a balanced squad of players so they’re a shoe-in for the title even if they take it at a canter.
