The Ivory Coast beat Equatorial Guinea last night 3-0 and advanced to the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations.
Drogba scores first goal for the Ivory Coast last night
But Cheick Tiote was on the bench as two goals from Didier Drogba and one from Yaha Toure was enough to see the side through to the semi-finals on Wednesday night.
They will meet the winners of tonight’s game between Gabon and Mali in that semifinal game.
After a slow start, the Ivory Coast began to increase the pace of the game and were awarded a penalty after 29 minutes, but goalkeeper Danilo saved Didier Drogba’s spot kick.
But they still went ahead after with a goal from the Chelsea striker after 36 minutes, and held that lead at the break.
Another goal from Droba doubled their lead when he headed the ball into the net from Yaya Toure’s free-kick after 69 minutes, and then the Manchester City player scored the third goal with just 9 minutes to play.
Arsenal’s Gervinho, former Leed United winger Max Gradel and Kolo Toure were all in the Ivory Coast side that started the game last night.
In tonight’s remaining quarterfinal games, it’s Ghana vs. Tunisia and Gabon vs. Mali.
The Ivory Coast are now strong favorites to win the Cup, and the form of Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba last night suggested they could rather easily win this tournament on Sunday, when the final is played.
Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote was involved in the first two group games, but seems to have been on the bench in the last couple of games.
The Ivory Coast’s advance means that Cheick Tiote will miss the game at Tottenham next Saturday, but will be back for the next game at home to Wolves on February 25th.
