When Papiss Cisse came on for the injured Leon Best after about 14 minutes of the game this afternoon at St. James’ Park, wearing that number 9 jersey, a new hero was born on Tyneside.
Papiss Cisse after scoring his first ever goal for Newcastle – YES
Papiss not only scored a goal that was good enough to win any game, but he looked a good all around player, and did a lot of work for Newcastle, against a very decent Aston Villa side.
And we can only imagine what it felt like for him after 70 minutes, when he brought the ball down on his chest and in one sweeping movement hit the ball left footed high into Shay Given’s top right hand corner of the net for his first ever gaol wearing that number 9 shirt.
And although Shay dived for the ball, he got nowhere near it, and the crowd went wild as Cisse ran towards them after scoring.
What a goal, his very first for Newcastle and on his debut too – something that the great Alan Shearer couldn’t even do.
And Alan Pardew purred after the game that the Senegal striker is not only a good player, and worked very hard for the team, but he’s also a great guy.
Alan took time out to tell everybody that Cisse had gone around the dressing room after the game, thanking all the players for helping him out on his debut.
Alan Pardew talked about Newcastle’s new number 9 after the game:
“It was a great goal. He is the right age for that jersey. He looked a threat and his goal was special. It lifted the roof off the place. Not bad on his weak foot!”
“If you wear No.9 here you need a good start.” That goal makes the shirt a bit lighter. His all-round performance will have had fans nudging their mates saying ‘we have got a good one here’.”
“Papiss wants to get in behind and Ba wants to come short. They will compliment each other. We are talking about a honed player, not a novice.”
“It is a big investment for the club. But I am spending fans’ money here, who pay to come to the stadium. I want to spend it well.”
The sight of Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse working together was a joy to watch, and of course after another solid week of training together and with the rest of the lads, they could test the Tottenham defense next Saturday afternoon at White Hart Lane.
And for the the benefit of Mr. Redknapp, we are assuming there is no release clause in his contract.
Papiss Cisse in action – jumping over a tackle
But the Geordie fans will still need to give him time to settle down in the Premier League – but we’re only saying that because that’s what Alan Pardew said when Papiss was signed last month – and we want to be politically correct. 😀
Cisse looked made-for- the-Premier-League today, by his overall performance and his match winning goal, and his ability to play well in what must have been a big game for him.
It’s going to be even more exciting watching Newcastle now, that we have the Senegalese Demba twins up front.
And it’s something most Newcastle fans will never forget – Cisse’s debut today and that wonderful goal – thanks for the memories.

Comment #81Can anyone HONESTLY say they are missing…
Nolan?
Carroll?
Barton?
Enrique?
You simply have to say that Pardew, Ashley, DL, Carr and all the other backroom staff have almost completed a staggering turn-around for our club, both on and off the field.
I think it’s too early to be blowing MA’s trumpet yet but I can’t help but feel the guy’s really shaping the club into a top 4 club again.
In Pardew I think we have a really good manager, certainly with the players, maybe a tad tactically suspicious at times but you can’t fault him overall.
Carr is just unbelievable at finding top talent – and I imagine there are many other scouts at the club that don’t even get a mention too.
We’re certainly moving upward and forward – feels nice!

nolan defo , he added valuable goals from midfield on numerous occasions. something were lacking now. were lucky weve got ba or we’d be screwed for goals.
bartons crossing was excellent but he was too disruptive of the team so him leaving wasnt a problem really. santon can do what jose did. and ba and cisse will bury carroll so thats all good.
i still like nolan though . good player to have round the place if you ask me.

Comment #89I’ve never rated Danny Guthrie, but I must say this season he has been fantastic, and watching him at the game yesterday he has come on leaps and bounds and totally ran the show. He looked like a star player, I’m glad he has proven me wrong and felt the need to apologise for my earlier hatred for him.
Pardew in my opinion is getting these seemingly “average” players and geting the best out of them, I mean Perch had a good game yesterday and could of scored a 20 yarder! Ryan Taylor is establishing himself as a vital team player, reminding me of Aaron Hughes who we should never of sold! What he is getting out of these lost and forgotten players shows how good a manager he is, long may it continue and maybe we need to give people we dislike (Obertan, Best etc) time to prove us wrong, I certainly think Obertan will!

are you for real???
Nolan? not the best footballer, but scored us goals,
Barton?, created lots of goals from his crossing,
Enrique? still the best left back in the country
im not say we have replaced them with bad players, but they did there job for us
but please do tell me who is scoring lots from midfield, we seem to rely on demba to score all our goals

Comment #91When Papiss was coming on – I told my son the story of Jon Dahl Tomason and him missing that easy one on one chance on his debut and the fact he never recovered despite being a very good player. Then Papiss missed that header – ooo no Dad. Damn! Then his sweet half volley – ooh yes Dad. He’s off and running get in!

Comment #92Am I missing something because MOTD2 gave a huge piece on Guthrie praising him?
I do wonder about this formation with Cabaye in the Barton role. Could be worth a try.

Yeah I’m for real….
You tell me what ANY of those 4 I mentioned have done this season which is better than what we have?
Nolan only has 7 goals in 25 CHAMPIONSHIP games this season…
Carroll has 3 in 21 PREM games (1 assist)
Barton has 2 goals and 3 assists in the PREM
Enrique has 2 assists in the PREM
I would take Carroll back as he’s 23 and to have him, Ba and Cisse as our 3 top strikers would be amazing but it’ll never happen.
You can’t argue about Nolan as he’s a spent force and Barton caused havoc and the stats say that this season he’s nowhere near as good as he was for us…
It’s all a bit hyperthetical but imo, I don’t think we’d be 5th with the 4 I mentioned still being at NUFC…
Simply, I do not miss them at all.

Comment #94Catchy…. Nolan was hardly midfield. He played just off Carroll.Other than his goals, his contribution on the pitch was minimal. Barton?….too disruptive. The only player I miss is Enrique. He is quality, and still better than Santon. He has great pace and strength. Yes, Santon is also quick, but he is slower off the mark and gets dragged out of position easier. The other thing I noticed about yesterday was how often Simpson was caught out of position. He needs to be told his first duty is to defend. Thank goodness we have Colo who reads the game so well.

i dont think ya can go off stats from this season. we will never know what would have happened if they had stayed. anyway, nolan bagged a lot of vital goals when called upon and was a good lad to have round the place. The others, i can do with out now.
ya probs worshiped them when they were here. cant really go back on it now theyve left.

Well what stats shoudl I use?
3 out the 4 are still in the Prem!
And I’ve not worshiped any of our players, ever!
However, I know what you mean and in terms of that sense of awe, I’ve not felt that about any Toon player since Shearer, Ferdinand, Beardsley, Tino etc…and that was many moons ago.
The point I was trying to make is that we have clearly progressed without those players that so many believed were crucial to us – clearly they were not.

Comment #98Edd case, there’s no way I could agree that Santon is better than Enrique so far. The spaniard was almost unbeatable by a winger , with devastating runs out of defence, and a teleptahic understanding with Guti. Santon has running power, and is good on the ball, but thats about it, by comparison. he would also be a better right back than left back.
