Pardew Refuses To Talk About European Champions League

It’s games like today’s fixture against Aston Villa at home,  that Newcastle will have to win if they are to finish high up in the league table come mid-May.

Charles N’Zogbia – when he was at Newcastle

If Newcastle do win today and Chelsea lose to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the later game,  Newcastle will be in joint 4th place on points, but 5th because of an inferior goal difference to Chelsea.

And the Chelsea vs  Manchester United game is  the first Premier League game to ever be shown live on network TV  over here – as a lead-in to the Super Bowl tonight.

The European Champions League and 4th place is probably a Tyne Bridge too far this season, so to speak, and Alan will not even talk about that at the moment:

“When we get to the last six or seven games, if we’re in or around that area, we’ll give it a go.”

“Talking about the Europa League – that’s different. We’re in a good position to try to achieve that.”

“It would be a fantastic achievement, but we’re not getting carried away.” ” Today is a game where we have to be careful.”

It’s not too much different from Europa League qualification, because 5th place gives automatic qualification, and for that Newcastle would need to finish higher than both Arsenal and Liverpool.

Of course we could get there depending on who wins the FA Cup and the Carling Cup,  and if it’s teams that have already qualified for Europe, we could finish lower than 5th and still qualify for the Europa League.

Newcastle fans will see former players Shay Given and Charles N’Zogbia returning to St. James’ Park today, and they both left Newcastle in January of 2009, which turned out to be a short four months before we were relegated.

When Charles was here with Wigan Athletic last season,  he scored two goals and looked good, and he even managed to out-jump 6’4″ Mike Williamson to head one of the goals.

So Newcastle will need to keep an eye on him this afternoon, as he seems to finally be showing some good form for Villa.

But the win is what we need today, and we’ll be happy if we can get that.

We’ll be very happy if we can get that – in fact – we’ll be ecstatic if we can get that. 😀

Lawrenson “Newcastle won’t finish in the top 6 nevermind the top 4”

What is Lawro’s problem with us anyway?

Is it from back when he used to be a coach or something?

Seems to predict us to lose every single game and just glosses over us whenever he talks about the top 6.

Surely if he wasnt just bitter about something he’d have predicted at least one win by now!

im actually starting to laugh at people who still dont think newcastle can get anywhere near top 6 yet we are thier now and always have been. We are beating teams lower than us so we must be better so why cant we finish their??
because people like mark lawrenson think henderson is the next gerrard and is way better than cabaye but the answer is just no!!
apart from rvp and aguero, demba ba is the next best striker in the league.
pundits are dlck heads and the only one that i started to like was ray wilkins but then he started having a go at ben arfa for doing bad!wtf???
so we will (hopefully) finish top 4 and show everyone that we should be taken seriouly but then they will still say something like ‘it was luky or other teams didnt play well’!!! bs and beat villa today please 🙂

Villa are there for the taking. Let’s play like the home team, keep it on the floor and play through them.

3 points today and we are in amazing nick. Next week is a nothing to lose game against Spurs who are incredible at home. But there is no pressure there.

15 games, we can win 8 of them. Draw a couple, perhaps lose a few. That would be 65 points. I completely believe that we can do it.

I think lawrenson is probably basing on performances .. we have been lucky with a few games but we deserver top 7 .. but are we better than Liverpool/Arsenal to get top 6 .. time well tell .. if Cisse hits the ground running we could defo be in with top 6 or top 4 .. but we need to stay solid until Tiote and Cabaye are back .. then I’ll be a bit more confident .. a win today and a draw at Spurs and then I’ll be expecting top 6 ..

Stuart .. true about Lawro .. always thinks we’re not good enough .. shows he doesn’t know our players .. but sure some of us don’t either eg. Obertan gets regularly slated yet is a very good player in the making .. just needs to take on his man more..

I don’t give a monkeys what the media think about us and I prefer not being mentioned as a team in contention for Europe. Convincing others is easy but doesn’t make it true.

By the way Ed – “because 5th place gives automatic qualification, and for that Newcastle would need to finish higher than both Arsenal and Liverpool.”

Really? How come you know Arsenal and Liverpool won’t finish in the top 4?

Len Dixon – You do yourself absolutely no favours.

It would be nice if for one day we didn’t see the raging mob bashing our own players. There’s every chance Ba will start with Shola – followed by the usual red mist of vitriol on here – tip tap tip tap – can’t get the hateful comments typed quick enough.

He plays badly – kick him boys. He plays well – kick him even harder!

@ shearermania santon wasnt 100% up to speed with match fitness when he arrived and needed time to settle and arfa hasnt been the same since his leg break unfortunately cos he is immense at times. however cisse was bangin in goals left right an centre at sc freidberg. however i did say in my earlier post that cisse will come off the bench second half 🙂

Hmmmm this talk of Europe worries me.

Not that I’m unduly pessimistic but this season was always about a) survival – done b) consolidation in the top 10 and c) building a new young team – very promising.

Finishing in the top 8 for me is a job well done. I’m not saying we shouldn’t dream about a european spot, and I think if we can get 3-4 point out of the next two games, with Tiote and Cabaye back we have a chance.

But I fear we still lack depth in defence, and we’ve 15 games to get through yet. Let’s start with a win though…

    HWTL!!!
