The Old And The New Meet At St. James’ Park This Afternoon

Newcastle fans will get a chance this afternoon  to welcome a player who played 462 times for the Newcastle first team.

Tim Krul – can emulate Shay Given a Newcastle

Shay Given will play in the opposing goal at Newcastle for the first time ever this afternoon, and Shay of course was a Newcastle star from the summer of 1997 until he left the club in January of 2009.

To put his career in perceptive at Newcastle,  Alan Shearer was at the club for 10 seasons from 1996, and played 404 times and scored 206 goals, but that was 58 appearances less than Shay made as the Newcastle number one goalkeeper.

And of all the good goalkeepers Newcastle ever had,  it could be that Shay was the best one, and I say that as a big fan of Ronnie Simpson, who was Newcastle’s goalkeeper in the 1950s.

Of course as we mentioned yesterday 23 year-old Tim Krul could well emulate Shay, although the Dutchman is in his first full season as the Newcastle number one,  and so far  has 61 appearances for Newcastle.

Alan Pardew talked yesterday of Shay Given and of Tim Krul:

“I’m sure Shay will look up the other end and think ‘there’s somebody who can take my old job on’.” “There haven’t been many in Newcastle’s history who have done it better than Shay.”

“It’s a nice learning curve for Tim. If he plays anything like he has done for the past year in the rest of his career here, he’ll be a massive player.“

“Villa are in good form. They’ve picked up a little bit.”  “They’ve got a goalie we know very well – a legend at our club – so we’ve got a lot to do.”

Our 2-0 win away from home in midweek was absolute gold dust – it sets up our home game.”  “Now we’ve got an opportunity, and we’ll try to take it.”

Shay had a good game in the 1-1 draw earlier in the season, and but for a   fabulous save from Yohan  Cabaye in injury time,  Newcastle would have come away with a 2-1 win at Villa Park.

This same  game last year was very early in the season, and we had seven chances in the game and scored six goals,  and won that game 6-0.

That will not happen this afternoon, but if the lads are to stay in their high position of 5th top of the league,  we’ll need the 3 points this afternoon.

And with a little luck,  and the same grit and determination the lads showed at Ewood Park on Wednesday night, we can do it.

Howay The Lads!!

Reckon Pardew will go with the bog standard 4-4-2 with Ba and Best up front with Shola coming on after an hour for Best. Think that Cisse will only get a 5 minute cameo at the end 🙁

    Krul
    Simpson
    Williamson
    Coloccini
    Santon
    Ben Arfa
    R.Taylor
    Guthrie
    Jonas

I think Shay Given will get a hero’s welcome, even more so if he lets a couple in through his legs.

Shay Given isn’t fit to wipe Tim Krul’s arse!

I hope we play Vukic or Abeid with Guthrie instead of Perch.

Oh yea and fk off Shola

Shay will get an absolutely fantastic welcome today – why wouldn’t he? He spent 12 years with us. You can hardly say he wasn’t loyal, as he stayed with us when he was at his absolute best.

Being honest though, even though Shay was probably the best shot stopper in the world, I think the keeper we have now is better. He comes for everything and defenders know that. He gives them confidence. Krul could be the best in the business and we need to keep him for the next 10 years.Irreplaceable.

As for today. Demba to start, Papiss to come on and score! 3-0 Newcastle!!! Would be a perfect day.

Ed don’t say it wont happen.
Yes it is unlikely, however it is possible.
Wont is a certainty and nothing is certain with our beloved toon.

    2-0 to the geordies…HWTL

You’re entitled to your opinion, but I’m also entitled to suggest that it’s cobblers.

@12 we may, or may not of went down.
to say we would have is unfair, however the truth is we would of had a better chance of staying up; thats a fact but to say we wouldnt of gone down is silly.

I do believe though it was a blessing in disguise. We have a better team and have the wage structure under better control.

I admired Shay and was 1 of my heroes. It’s sad how and why he left as I always thought he’ll end his career here but I fully understand why he left. Though it would have been easier for everyone except him if he would have left at the end of the season.

Why wouldnt He Get a heros welcome? He left after giving the club great service for years.
He didn’t leave us in the dump, they were getting treated like rubbish at the club.
Our owner was toying with everything but has now come good.
    Welcome to St.James Shay.
Proud to say I come from the same area as Shay does,Donegal
