Tiote Plays Whole Game As The Ivory Coast Reach Final

The Ivory Coast reached the final of the African Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win over Mali on Wednesday night.

Cheick Tiote – reaches final of African Cup of Nations

The scorer of the only goal of the game was Arsenal’s Gervinho, who scored after 45 minutes and he was a target of  Newcastle last summer, before he eventually joined the London club.

Gervinho collected the ball on the halfway line just before half time, and surged down the left wing before cutting inside and scoring a terrific goal,  as he brilliantly fired the ball into the far bottom corner of of the net, giving Mali goalkeeper Diakite no chance.

The Ivory Coast seemed content with their lead in the second half,  and tried to slow the game down, as they hung on to reach the final.

The Ivorians will now face Zambia in the final on Sunday at the Stade d’Angondjé, Libreville, after Zambia beat Ghana 1-0 last night in the later game at the Estadio de Bata, in Bata.

And after missing the previous two games as he sat on the bench, Newcastle midfield star Cheick  Tiote played the whole game last night in the Stade d’Angondjé, Libreville – although he picked up a yellow after 83 minutes for a tackle from behind.

It’s interesting that Cheick is wearing the number 9 for the Ivorians in the tournament.

The Ivory Coast have now won all their games,  and have yet to concede a goal in the tournament after playing five games, and they beat Equatorial Guinea, one of the two host countries, by a score of  3-0 in the quarter finals.

Other Premier league players who started for the Ivorians last night were the Toure brothers of Manchester City – Yaya and Kolo, Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba of Chelsea – Drogba was the captain – and Arsenal’s Gervinho.

I was flicking between this and the Mackem/Smoggie match. Had to smile when Tiote got his customary yellow card! 🙂

The HBA issue still raging I noticed! I think it will continue even after he moves to Spurs in the summer, having played just a few more halves 🙂 The thing is, it’s hard to judge the lad as he hasn’t been given the chance: 2 wonder goals, 4 misplaced passes, that’s all we’ve seen. It would be more fair if AP gave him an extended run (say a whole game! :)) and then it would be much easier for fans to make up their mind. At present, we’re halved by those who believe AP (he’s lazy, can’t get with the program etc.) and those who believe he is a wizzard who has surprisingly fell into our lap and whom we’re about to lose without even trying…

    I watched the Zambia game.

Zambia were poor and scored against the run of play.
Ivory Coast will win easily unless Zambia’s good fortune runs for another 90 minutes.

Go Cheick, I hope he comes back with a winner’s medal.

Doesn’t sound as if Cheiek will be too tired after the Mali game.
Hope it’s the same story against Zambia, then he can return to us, rarin’ to go.

@ cyprus dont start that shit 4 misplaced passes? ive counted dozens ok i want hba to do well the same as the rest of us but he is no different to anyone else if he doesnt play well he doesnt play and he has scored 3 goals everton bolton and blackburn the part that worries me is his lack of assists he doesnt release the ball enough and wants to take on everybody in the opposition team if obertan or any one else was doing that there would be outrage!

Boom Boom the truth is probably somewhere in the middle re: passes. Dozens would mean at least 24 (ie 2 dozens minimum) and that sounds like a lot, given the time he’s been given on the field. if you feel he’s been given his chance and fluffed it I respect your opinion. Still, I disagree.

Ivory Coast were almost a sure thing for the start of the competition. Although I want Cheick to come back happy, but it’s a bit like supporting Brazil in a WC against El Salvador or Cyprus or some other minnow……can’t do it.

If we can get Antoine Griezmann in the summer, we’ll have a really lethal winger. The lad will be star player soon, we should try and get him early.

Quick, skillful, bags of technical ability and he’s only 20…..and he’s French.

Really bored of this Arfa crack now like.

He’ll get another chance soon, but he’s had plenty. I would love to see him mature, but you have to wonder why other clubs didn’t pip us to the post.

He’s a long way off being a Modric, Mata, Silva etc but he should be given a chance to shine behind Cisse and Ba at some point – I’d love to see it in a 433 – Guthrie, Tiote and Cabaye with Arfa, Ba and Cisse up front, but I doubt pards will drop Jonas and for good reason.

It’s a little bit of skill and an aweful lot of graft that’s got us to 5th.

Although I am a bigger fan of Cabaye over Guthrie, I also have a belief that ‘if it isnt broke, dont fix it’. ‘Never break up a winning team’ is something that better managers than me have dictated over the years….
