Mike Ashley visited Newcastle on Thursday and he was seen at the game yesterday looking happy enough – when Newcastle were 5-0 down.
Mike Ashley – in Newcastle last Thursday
That’s more than some of us were feeling, after Newcastle’s horror show in the first half, but it’s only one game and Newcastle are still in 6th place in the league, so we have to balance what happened yesterday with how well the lads are doing this season.
Mike met with Alan Pardew and talked about three contracts last Thursday – those of Fab Coloccini, Danny Guthrie and Danny Simpson – but they may be held up until the summer.
And that seems a little bit dodgy with Guthrie, because his current deal runs out on 30th June.
This is what Alan Pardew told the Sunday Sun today:
“Mike was here on Thursday. We discussed those three contracts.” “We’ll talk about the younger group – one or two targets, one or two contract situations.
“I can’t speak for the past, but at the moment I should think he’s quite pleased.” “Of course I would like all three of those sorted by the end of the season,”
“But it’s not easy. We’re all on a great season, maybe we’ll wait until the summer and get the season out of the way and see where we go. It’s all to play for.”
It wouldn’t be good to delay the contract negotiations, but it must be that there are some problems with the deals, otherwise they would go through, and it’s much like kicking the can down the road to delay negotiations.
And of course Danny Simpson only has to delay through the summer, and he’s into his last year of his contact.
Newcastle will not want him to see out his contract and leave next year as a free agent, so if he doesn’t sign we have to think he’ll be sold in the summer – that still has to be a possibility.
But it seems that it has been slow going on the contract front, and they may be delayed to ensure all efforts are directed into finishing out the season on a high note, and even qualifying for European competition.
That would be the icing on the cake for Newcastle this season, but why can’t the club get some contracts wrapped up?
