When Zambia won the African Cup of Nations in that amazing penalty shoot-out, after the scores had been tied at 0-0 through extra time, we thought there had to be some good players in their side.
Emmanuel Mayuka – wants to play in Premier League
That’s because we knew the Ivory Coast had top players from the Premier League, like Cheick Tiote, the Toure brothers – Yaya and Kolo, , Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and Gervinho, so there had to be some played in the Zambia side.
And there is news today that Newcastle are interested in Zambia striker Emmanuel Mayuka.
Newcastle will bring in a new striker in the summer to augment their striker squad with Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger likely to be leaving the club, and the 21 year-old seems to fit the bill.
He currently plays for Swiss club BSC Young Boys whom he joined in 2010 from Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.
This is not the first time we have been linked with this player, but at the beginning of January the Newcastle Journal reported that he was not a target for Newcastle – at least in the January transfer window.
That’s probably because Newcastle at the time knew Papiss Cisse was available and were staring to make their move which resulted in Newcastle paying out £9M for the Senegal striker.
But it would seem that the 5′ 9″ tall Mayuka would fit in well at Newcastle, and he scored two goals for Zambia in the group stages and got the vital goal that beat Ghana and put Zambia into the finals of the African Cup of Nations.
Mayuka’s agent James Barrett told talkSPORT:
“There has been interest shown from Arsenal, Newcastle and Fulham. Emmanuel wants to play in the Premier League, which he feels is the best in the world, but there is more concrete interest from other European clubs.”
Newcastle could well be the club that goes after the 21 year-old, and he fits what Newcastle want at the moment, a young striker who can grow and challenge up front for a starting position.
But there are also a number of other clubs after him including other clubs on the continent, as his agent mentions.
This season he has played 27 times for BSC Young Boys and scored 14 goals with 4 assists, and he has played 34 times for Zambia with 10 goals.
Since joining Young Boys in July of 2010, he has made 72 total appearances and scored 23 goals with 13 assists.
