We watched the top of the table clash in France last night with PSV taking on Montpellier in the Parc des Princes in Paris.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – Montpellier captain at just 22 years old
And although the visitors were 2-1 up with just a couple of minutes to play in the game, PSV equalized through Guillaume Hoarau in the 88th minute, after John Utaka had put Montpelier ahead on 81 minutes.
That saved new manager Carlo Ancelotti some blushes, but in truth Montpellier looked the better side, but are still one point behind the Paris-based team in the French League.
And it gave us a chance to see potential Newcastle target Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in action, and generally the Montpellier defense looked solid, unlike PSG’s, which looked a bid dodgy in the center at the back.
While Mbiwa looked solid in defense he was taken to the cleaners by Jeremy Menez for the PSG late goal, when he somehow got around the defender who was born in the Central African Republic in 1989.
Apart from that, the 22 year-old Montpellier captain looked a solid player in central defense for the visitors.
And it seems the versatile defender who can play anywhere across the back-line, is attracting some attention with his tidy displays with German club Bayern Munich said to be the latest club interested in him.
But the potential good news for Newcastle is that he wants to play in the English Premier League, and with Newcastle United’ s name sky high in France these days, if Newcastle do want to bring this lad in over the summer, we must have a decent chance.
When he was told about Bayern Munich’s interest, this is what the 6′ tall defender had to say to Sky Sports:
“Bayern is a very big club. I’m really flattered, but my ambition is to one day play my football in England.”
“And Newcastle is one of the biggest club sides in the world, and I’d really like to join them if at all possible.”
Okay so I put that last line in there.
But Newcastle must have a good chance of signing this lad, and Sky Sports have said he’s worth around £5M, but we think we could get him for less than that, and he could be a great buy for Newcastle.
Since he can play anywhere across the back line, he could immediately be challenging for a full back spot on either side.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has played 8 times at the French U21 level.
