Yohan Cabaye, Cheick Tiote And Ryan Taylor All Start

2:07 pm, Saturday, February 25th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 696 Comments

As expected Newcastle’s three returning players Yohan Cabaye, Cheick Tiote and Ryan Taylor are all back in the starting line-up this afternoon, for Newcastle’s game at home to Wolves.

As expected Ryan Taylor is preferred to Ben Arfa and Gabby Obertan on the right wing, and Cabaye and Tiote return to the side in central midfield at the expense of Danny Guthrie and James Perch, who are both on the bench.

Even after the 5-0 hammering last time out,  the back five is again unchanged, and they will get a chance this afternoon to show it was just a blip in London a couple of weeks ago.

The bench is a strong one with  Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, James Perch, Danny Guthrie, Gabriel Obertan, Hatem Ben Arfa, Shola Ameobi.

And we expect Alan Pardew to use all three substitutes allowed his afternoon,  which is vital game for the Magpies, if  we are going to get back on track after two five goal hammerings in our last four league games.

Newcastle need to somehow get all 3 points this afternoon, and that’s what we are hoping for, and anything less will be a disappointment.

Howay The Lads!!

Teams:

Newcastle (4-4-2): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Davide Santon; Ryan Taylor, Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez; Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, James Perch, Danny Guthrie, Gabriel Obertan, Hatem Ben Arfa, Shola Ameobi

Wolves (4-5-1): Wayne Hennessey; Ronald Zubar, Christophe Berra, Richard Stearman, Stephen Ward; Kevin Foley, Karl Henry, David Edwards, Jamie O’Hara, Matt Jarvis; Kevin Doyle
Substitutes: Dorus De Vries, Jody Craddock, Roger Johnson, Nenad Milijas, Stephen Hunt, Michael Kightly, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake

    No Bassong for Wolves.

  • 12 Indian Magpie // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:16 PM

    Steve,

    no ben arfa

  • 13 danishmag // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:16 PM

No surprice in that line up.
For me it is the 4th time in a row I got Pardews starting line up, spot on.. Only change i would make myself is Benny for Raylor.. A game like this, i think Simmo can take care of himself.. But.. In Pardew i trust!

    3-0 today..
    Howay the lads…
    Links??

  • 14 tdt // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:17 PM

We must remember that HBA is coming back from a career-threatening injury. He needs time to gradually get back up to speed. There’s no point throwing him in all the time until he’s ready, otherwise he’ll look crap and loss confidence in himself.

Hope he comes on after 60 mins and dominates.

  • 15 steve // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:17 PM

ok, so if we win today and ben arfa is still on the bench, you still angry ?

  • 16 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:17 PM

    Facepalm indeed @1

Lads why can’t we drop the HBA debate. It would be relevant if we were fighting relegation and not playing him but we are flying in the league without him! Do you guys not see the risk of unsettling a winning side by putting him into the team? Once the team that Pards wants to build really takes shape then I think we will see HBA come good, let’s all just show a bit of patience and enjoy the team showing some good stuff in the here and now! :D

  • 17 Steve_48 // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:18 PM

@ Steve – quality link mate, NEVER get bored of that one ;)

  • 18 Indian Magpie // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:19 PM

well i am sure we will win, but its the way we are going abt it.
    no swagger

  • 19 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Indian Magpie and Roshan, If we sold HBA in the summer would you guys still support Newcastle United? I am just curious if you guys support the club or just follow them because of HBA.

  • 20 Steve_48 // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:19 PM

  • 21 spitfire_ // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Well… to put your player with best tricks on the bench… again… is like last year Wigan to leave N’Zogbia on the bench… It’s insane!!!

  • 22 Barras // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:19 PM

I think we will win today, but I’m disappointed there’s not a start for Hatem Ben Arfa again, I really am. I feel that Simpson should of lost his place for Ryan Taylor. Nevertheless, I hope Simpson and Ryan Taylor both have great games. Simpson split up from his wife/girlfriend the other day apparently, I hope that doesn’t have an affect on his performance, poor guy.

  • 23 cupiddstunt // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:20 PM

So tommyy read Indian magpies post and tell us flying high was not right in his sarcasm

  • 24 MagpiesFlyHigh // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:20 PM

Calling our manager a leech is what you’d expect from a Mackem.

  • 25 planb's revenge // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:21 PM

somebody seriously thought Ben arfa would start? 45 mins maximum. probably 25-30 though. as long as he shows what he’s capable of a few games in a row he’ll begin to start. as it stands he has 1 good game followed by 3 crap or anonymous ones

  • 26 tdt // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:21 PM

As long as we win I don’t care who plays.

  • 27 Steve_48 // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:21 PM

The problem with HBA is this, he scored that amazing goal against the Toffees, then was out for 12 months+, since then that form he once showed has yet to return, and people are getting frustrated. He needs more match time and to be played in the right position to get “it” back

  • 28 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:22 PM

Spitfire, you do realise that you compared Newcastle with Wigan Athletic? Analyse the incongruity…apples and oranges my friend

  • 29 steve // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:22 PM

Fair one Indian but surely the results are more important than the performance. I would rather win without HBA than loose with him wouldn’t you. Not that i’m saying playing HBA means we will instantley loose ;) ( I actually like him)

  • 30 Indian Magpie // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:22 PM

    Magpies flying high,

i dont like him, playing negative football,

    Ruddy,
If we sold him he is not part of NUFC, end of story

  • 31 Dannyo // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:23 PM

Let’s just trust in Pardew handling HBA.
If it’s something the man knows, it’s how to handle players.
He’s shown that through Perch and Guthrie.

  • 32 Indian Magpie // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:24 PM

okay you can call names to fellow posters, and i cannot call name or shame the manger,

dont tell me you never called a NUFC player a name

  • 33 MagpiesFlyHigh // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Some of us on here like both Benny as a player and Pardew as a manager.. It isn’t either/or.

Neither are perfect but both are with the Toon. That should be enough for us to support both, and hope we get the best from both of them.

No player is bigger than the team and no manager is bigger than the club (possibly excepting SAF ?)

  • 34 ToonDownSouth // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:25 PM

    “leech of a manager” ??

What does that even mean? Genuinely?

  • 35 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:25 PM

I am interested whether you would support the club regardless. Many people from foreign countries only support clubs because of certain players. I was wondering if you only support Nufc because of HBA due to this fixation you have with him and whether you would still support the club if he was moved on

  • 36 Indian Magpie // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:25 PM

    its a negative adjective

  • 39 spitfire_ // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:27 PM

    @ Ruddy Marveaux-lous

Firtst of all I’m not your friend, okay? And secon of all – do you understand that I mean the fact that Benny is the most skilled player for us just like N’Zogbia was for Wigan? I’m not compare Newcastle with Wigan. ?he fact that you understand it an entirely different way is your problem.

  • 41 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:28 PM

Who is name calling fellow posters? Indian a lot of people respect Pardew, just because you don’t like a particular brand of football he plays does not mean you have a right to insult him, and if you do insult him some people are going to be offended so you have to appreciate that

with our formation and the players at our disposal he just dosnt fit in…as simple….im a big fan though

  • 46 Tommyy // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Cupidstunt – for a start that doesn’t even make sense, and obviously my comment wasn’t there to defend everyone and anyone who has a views against Pardew/ his team selection and tactics. Merely those who do have opposing views but are willing to debate them reasonably.

Please engage your brain before replying with totally irrelevant comments.

  • 47 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:31 PM

Spitfire chill out. The reason I took it that way was because the Newcastle United squad is much stronger than the Wigan squad. N’Zogbia played for Wigan last season as a matter of necessity, they needed him to score and create goals because without him they would be destroyed, we don’t need HBA the same way that Wigan needed N’Zogbia but if you refuse to see the merit in what I am saying then that is your call.

I see the usual vitriol is being spouted on here on the cusp of a match when EVERY fan should be getting behind the TEAM.

Debate all you like afterwards. At least have the dignity and support to get behind the 11 players on the team sheet, whoever they are, they are Newcastle United. And that goes for the manager too.

    HWTL!!

  • 51 cupiddstunt // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:33 PM

    Indian @ # 32

I can honestly say you check through my posts and you will never find me calling players names nor the management, I have followed the club for over half a century and have seen us a lot worse that we are right now.

I do think this is some of your problem you started following the club when they were successful and that success is what you expect to continue and you get angry when it doesn’t.

Check back through the history of the club and you will see that this period is quite promising for that I am happy.

But that apart I never call NUFC players names unless they turn their back on the club and even then they are not worth the effort.

  • 52 danishmag // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:33 PM

    tdt..
you are right about Benny.. I agree!
Though, he has already shown, that he is ready for some more playing time.. And today against Wolves, would be perfect for him to start side by side with Tioté and Cabaye..
Then subbed after 60 mins, to rest him after the goalshow from the two african lads in front..

But i guess the last 30 mins will have to do.. I hope he will be on for 30 mins..

  • 53 Brutooon // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:33 PM

Good Lineups, i hope HBA will get a run later in the match. Even when we are winning !!!

  • 56 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Indian I do remember and I appreciate that, but you have to realise that we cannot make these debates on this forum a personal issue, and if you insult Pardew on a personal level some people are not going to be happy.

Right lads let’s keep sight of what is important, we are less than 30mins away from the first game of football for NUFC in 2 weeks! I’m buzzing, let’s forget the HBA debate and the whole Pards slagging and unite behind the black and white the lads need us together!!!

  • 77 MagpiesFlyHigh // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:42 PM

TBH we don’t play pure hoofball in a limited 4-4-2. We’ve mixed it up a lot more than just banging it upfield to Carroll this season.
Sometimes under pressure the defence need to clear their lines upfield and there is nothing wrong with some 50-60 metre passes to the no9 as long as it isn’t route 1 all aftternoon
We’re actually pretty decent at the passing game – we had a lovely ten minute spell at Liverpool where it really flowed with 30+ passes – only the final product missing then in a pretty crap overall performance. We’re lucky in having not only our first choice ACM Cabaye but our second choice Guthrie being sweet passers of the ball and some good dribbling by the wingers and HBA even if final ball might need improving. We are not Stoke and Pardew is not Allardyce. We can turn it on….we really can and its about time we dumped somebody

True that, the whole ‘hoofball’ thing is – in my opinion – being seriously exagerated lately. It’s just being used as another excuse to slate a manager that people refuse to, and will never, change their opinions about.

  • 96 t00ntime // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:51 PM

dont get why people say benny doesnt fit in too our team lol.

To defend Indian magpies comment, pardew said we wud play attractive football, with 9 defensive players in a 4-4-2 its kinda hard to see where the attractivness will come from. Dont get me wrong I dont mind us winning even if we play boring But why play a 4-4-2 if ur going to use 2 defensive wingers with a CDM and a CM who likes to sit back and control the game from the middle? it forces ba and cisse to come back and look for the ball… we need atleast 1 winger weather its marveux or benny (marv is injured atm) who can run foward quickly and get passed a player… tbf raylor has other qualities but bombing down the wing isnt one…meaning our RW is no threat. our LW has santon who can bomb down so it has a threat only problem is that after 30mins he is pooped and just walks back from the halfway line… that cost us the 2nd goal vs spuds. Jonas cant go forward to well, he can dribble but 9 times out of 10 he loses the ball or miss passes it meaning our LW is open for counters. In the summer we need to get more attacking wingers.

o and the fact that ben arfa doesnt defend is great, he stays a bit further forward meaning for the counter we pass it too him and he dribbles/passes/crosses to a demba

do you get my point, or did I make it sound more complicated then it is xD ?

Thats what I would play. Raylor keeps possession and is experienced. e’ll also get the crosses in to the front two.

Feel bad for guthrie. I’d like to see him partnered with Tiote. He is on a par with Cabaye for me. too good for our bench.

    Indian,lose the Hugh heels man.
He didn’t say anything racist at all,you actually started name calling.
Hba is being used in a way he manager sees fit at the moment and he sees him in training everyday.
A post earlier by Ed showed that Hba would get more fame time so stop crying and wait patiently, and for all our sakes support the team as one player won’t make a team.

  • 108 Steve_48 // Feb 25, 2012 at 2:59 PM

I’d usually run the SOPCAST links from home but not there today. Having to piggy back brother’s poor 2mb link and sopcast will kill the link.

  • 172 Barras // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:32 PM

I think Williamson isn’t in Pardew’s plans. I think he will try and let him go for quite a small fee in the summer. He really does look shaky. Even when were winning 2-0 at home to Wolves. On the other hand though, he can have these almost perfect games sometimes.

  • 173 Marty-Toon // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:32 PM

Simmo is decent today,I think the lads quality.

  • 174 Oleg G // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Hhh.. can some one please, for the sake of this team, tell AP (to tell the players) that when you have a situation on the wing where you cannot get out of, someone needs to come closer from the middle part of the pitch and help, give passing options?
We could do so much more from these situation than just giving it back to defense and back to Krul.

  • 175 Rowan Milsted // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:33 PM

    Twatter // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:43 PM

I thought that after Spurs people with these kind of comments won’t be back.
Don’t you get it? Yes, lets win this one, great. But then what? Another poor quality win? and then a 5-2 against a side like Fulham?
Winning is great, but a team also needs to have quality for 90 mins of the game to be in the top.
Whoever is “whining” (which is actually just some comments on how we can improve our game), just wants the team to play good football, is that too much in your opinion to ask?

Krul has sent the ball 10 times already forward, and what? is that good tactics for you at home? Why we are not playing more passing and triangles. Why the team is not holding the ball and pushing forward?

We want wins, but we also want quality, why is that bad?

Well, a very good first half on the face of it. I thought the 1st 25 mins we were really good, some lovely passing and keeping the ball well. Toward the end we seemed to play ourselves into trouble and didn’t create much going forward, which is a big shame as Ba and Cisse look so up for this. We’ve just got to do a good defensive job 2nd half, keep calm and carry on, hopefully we can get another goal or two. Howay the lads!

  • 223 ToonDownSouth // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:54 PM

I really don’t think we have the players to playing wonderful passing football.

  • 226 ilovetoon8788 // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:55 PM

well today is smiles all round already, the toon winning, the mackems losing and the rugby to look forward too.

On a performance note we arnt playing amazing but the result is the main point n how we get it i couldnt give a badgers arse, i think the biggest positivities of the first half are the workrate of the two demba’s and the quality and strength of tiote that we have missed in the middle of the park.

I get really annoyed with hoof ball as well and it annoys me that we dont play decent football sometimes but you cant argue with a win and our poisition in the league!!!!! I remember Pardew saying at start of the season that it will take time for our team to find its feet. Well i think it will take a whole season before we start seeing good flowing football. What pardew has done has made as tight and hard to beat (most of the time). So chill out all the negative fans! We are currently fourth…reality check!

  • 231 t00ntime // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:56 PM

we need to pick up the pace again, dutch commentator said if we go up a gear we will win with ease, I agree totally, need either motivation or new player introduced. Loved the first 20mins been sort of shakey since.

Any one else notice how selfish ba was there. I only noticed it once but we were breaking, jonas on the left cisse right and ba had the ball… jonas was totally open, instead he tried to dribble and lost it :S it was still 1-0 at the time :P

pardew needs to tell ba not to worry if he doesnt score anymore this season he is still great lol

Ugly Performances but who cares, 2-0 by half time is a good result

  • 234 colwell // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:57 PM

I would take Claudio Cacapa over Williamson.

Cisse has become our greatest DM always tracking back brilliant play and also what a 1st touch this guy has.

Only annoyance is that we are a team that works hard and breaks play up well but we lack pace and skill. Pards said he wants pace and skill but instead has made us quite boring to watch but hard to beat unless your Spurs.

  • 237 Beattie25 // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:57 PM

I hope people who are looking at the leauge table and are seeing the scoreline are watching the game.

This is what we have served up all season and I have had enough of it.

Against this very poor Wolves side we are the poorer team and this has been the same all season.

If we get 4th in the leauge I think we have been the 4th worst team in terms of quality this season.

    Awful

  • 238 montevideomag // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Some of you have got to chill a bit. At half time today we are in fourth place. I look back two years and we were second tier, three years ago in a relegation fight, which had been coming for a few years before that. I love the fact that we can grind out results. Who wouldn’t to win playing well, but Wolves five in midfield is styfling us, however they still have had no success in the final third, we look sharp when we get there.

More goals and Ben Arfa to come. HWTL

Hope to see Arfa come on for Raylor. But can’t see it happening knowing Pardew. Who will probably make a defensive sub to ride wolves storm instead. We need Arfa there to stop their attacks.

  • 243 Steve_48 // Feb 25, 2012 at 3:59 PM

I know Pardew has his knockers on here, but at least we have depth in the squad these days. We have some quality on the bench to come on, and some players wichreally need to be cut loose this Summer.

    or my favorite
c)bring Perch on and let us all doze off before the game ends?

  • 249 ToonDownSouth // Feb 25, 2012 at 4:00 PM

How about you guys pay to watch it if you’re going to complain about the quality of football?

If you don’t contribute a penny and just sit at home watching it on the internet, then I don’t think you have much to complain about.

  • 250 Oleg G // Feb 25, 2012 at 4:01 PM

I think that the word “whining” and “complaining” is being miss used here a lot.

We all want the team to win, even if we are playing like crap. But we also know that if we are playing like crap today, against wolves, this can come back and bite us the next week or the week after that.

We have a strong team out there, great strikers, good midfield, we should be dominating and controlling the ball and the pace of the game, but instead we are throwing and kicking the ball away, our play maker is Krul, and our strikers are running after Wolves defenders.
We had 2-3 good attacks with some great fast passing and we moved forward. Why just not to do that 50 times a game instead of 5? It works much better in general and this how the “better” and “bigger” clubs play. We don’t need to try those long balls, we have quality of the ground. Cabaye and Tiote are great passers, Strikers are fast, Raylor and Jonas on a good day know to run and move the ball around, so why not to do that?

It is like we have amazing stats with long balls from Krul or something. If we analyze every game we played. Krul kicked the ball forward about 20 times a game (17 times the ball is lost 3 times it finds out players) and from the times it finds our players maybe 1 out of another 20 creates a goal, so that is maybe, and that is a big maybe, 3-4 goals out of this tactic, but those are 500 long balls in 25 games. Does it worth it? Is it a good output?

  • 392 Oleg G // Feb 25, 2012 at 4:34 PM

AP must play a different tactic with HBA. When he gets the ball he must get 2-3 passing options because he knows how to keep the ball and he most of the time got 2 players on him, so he needs to release the ball, but he needs to have options for that, like Simmo did there a minute ago.

Sits on the bench for 100 games and then comes on in the 65th minute, 2-2 down, demoralized team after leading 2-0, players are tired, and tactics are not for this type of player. What do you expect him to do? He is not superman, he is just a different type of player that can sometimes do something extra.

He doesn’t get a chance to play. If he would play for 3 full games, I would be able to say something. But he is being brought only in a weaker team, or only when we are down or in bad shape. Why he didn’t start this one for example?

Anyway, if we don’t want him, many teams will come for him.

As we don’t play fast pace football with Shola, we should not be playing high long balls with HBA. If you want to see a player shine, help him, don’t make it more difficult for him.

Why AP doesn’t give 2 player an order, when HBA is with the ball, offer him passing options.

Jonas has managed to make all of zero crosses

Which tends to be business as usual for him unfortunately. He’ll have to be replaced come next season if we want to push on.

Ben Arfa has also not made a single cross since he came on either but I think that is down to him looking to make the headlines to get back in the squad. Probably why Pardew doesn’t think he plays for the team and you’d have to agree with him tbh.

Shola has actually made some impact since coming on, which I don’t think anyone can argue against.

Also, I think Guthrie now wants to leave after being dropped today which explains the lacklustre performance.

And finally, Williamson has had a bit of a mare today.

I’m usually really positive, but … I’m not sure I rate Pardew! I think we are where we are because we have decent players, and you could argue thats down to Graham Carr. But as far as tactics go, we have no idea. Its so frustrating watching a our players hoof the ball up the pitch. I hate long ball tactics, it’s such a direct game and it means we are constantly giving possession away. Football is simple really, the longer you keep the ball the longer the opposition dont have it. Therefore your defending and building an attack at the same time. We have the players to maintain possession, so why don’t we? FRUSTRATING!!!

  • 545 Brutooon // Feb 25, 2012 at 4:58 PM

    1) Jonas apart from the goal he lose 10 out of 10 of the ball

    3) we are playing long balls

cabaye and jonas especially look really really tired! always thought guthrie struggles as a sub, his kind of game requires him being on from the start and getting lots of the ball, struggles to adapt to the pace as a sub! HBA plays for himself, he has immense talent but his decision making is simply woeful! Think the whole team looks tired though but we have a thin squad and little room for rotation!

  • 553 Barras // Feb 25, 2012 at 4:59 PM

I’m fuming. Everything about that was sickening. With that performance we drew 2-2 with Wolves, but if we were to play Tottenham again today, and I can confidently say we would of lost 5-0 again. Absolutely no improvement since 2 weeks ago. Goodbye to the top four. And probably goodbye to European qualification.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have been so poor recently. But today suggests that Chelsea are on the up which is no surprise because of their squad. And Liverpool or Arsenal or maybe both could yet make a late push.

But don’t worry everyone, he won’t stay here for long if he won’t get time to play, so your wishes will come true and then you can bring on your favorite players, Guthrie, Raylor, Perch.

Well I for one am looking forward to hear what Pardew has to say about this. Best team? Load of rubbish in my opinion. Ben Arfa was our most dangerous player. He may loose the ball but he also got a couple of good shots off. He was the only one who even looked like scoring. The performance was of relegation team standard. NO passion, no energy, no style.

When we went two nil up we just sat back and invited pressure. Where’s the entertainment in that Pardew?

Forget top 4 it was never going to happen, Cisse was our best player until he came off. We should have taken simmo off and put raylor to RB, Put Obertan on IHMO his pace could have hurt wolves. left tiote on and subbed gutierrez off for HBA.
Team at end should have been,

  • 579 ToonDownSouth // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:04 PM

All the managers fault, not the players?

Think I’d have to disagree there…

And if anyone thinks there’d be pressure on Pardew’s job, I think that’s laughable. No way is Ashley going to sack a manager who is paid peanuts, and can do a half decent job with no transfer budget.

  • 580 Tommyy // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:04 PM

HBA was poor yes, but so was our whole team and the circumstances in which he was brought on meant he had to try and show something. If he had played from the start he would have been way more comfortable.
Can’t believe the stick he gets when you have Simpson and Williamson playing and making mistake after mistake after mistake.

  • 588 LGFUAD21 // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Well im disappointed with that. We need a quality CB so we can drop this baby sitting tactic.

    Stop hoof ball.

Our structure was terrible today. It was like watching my little brothers under 11s side today. Headless chickens ball chasing.

Santon is the only player that played to his ability. Showed up Jonas on the attack

Tiote wasnt bad but we know he’s better. Same goes for Cabaye.

Guthrie was rusty (perhaps something to do with the fact he got dropped straight away despite playing well)

Ba looks shaky. Definately a different player to he was at the beginning of the season.

Willo I have little confidence in. He definitely played better last season.

Simmo i have no qualms. Needs to develop his delivery but he almost always does his job for us. Was unlucky to get that deflection.

Raylor would be a decent winger if he had more pace.

Papiss was ok. Got the goal. Movement was good. Wasnt help much by the rest of the team.

Bennys change opened it up a bit but again he gets no support from anyone. It was like the team expected him to go it alone and win it for us at times. I want to see this guy developed and assimilated. I dont care whether its on the wing or in the hole.

the 4-4-2 is such an on/off formation. Its worked at times but others it just lacks any creativity.

When we played 4-5-1 we always seem far more in control of the game. If we want to play 442 then we must find start getting balls into the box.

I would have been inclined to keep tiote and papiss on. Replace Raylor with Benny and give Fergie last 15 mins on LW in place of Jonas. Fergie likes to get crosses in.

    Although Jonas’ goal was nice

  • 589 Rowan Milsted // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:05 PM

I’ve said before that sometimes when we get ahead in a game we’re too negative. I’m not a Pardew hater, nor do I want some kind of massive knee jerk reaction, but today is a prime example of getting ahead in a game, having the chance to win by a very comfortable margin, and not doing so. Instead we hardly created a single chance after going 2-0 up and toady we’ve paid for it. Really, really disappointing. We should have won that by something like 3/4-0. Too negative, too lacklustre. I’m not happy at all with that result. No excuses, we had 2 weeks to prepare and Wolves didn’t even play very well. I have faith in our ability to bounce back but we really need to address the issue of getting ahead in games and playing too negatively, too defensively, and cutting out our midfield with long balls. God’s sake, we should have won comfortably today.

  • 590 Jonny // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:06 PM

HBA was probably our best player today so get your head out of Cabaye, Ba, Colo etc. arse because they were all shite! HBA had 20 minutes and he probably created more chances than the whole team put together in 70 minutes. Was a poor time to bring him on though when we are defending a set piece? The football we play is near embarissing and i don’t understand it to be honest.

We have to freshen this lot up another game were we are desperate for something to happen, our defence needs a good kick up the arse again a deflected goal cos simpson turns his back trying to block a shot and a crap header by williamson, pure championship players in simpson raylor williamson guthrie, i am not enjoying it , how we are were we are i just dont know, we need more attracking options, krul santon ferguson colo williamson (kadar is better than him but knacka pardew wont give him a chance like he wont give fergie a good run, tiote cabaye jonas ben arfa cisse demba ba, it needs to change or our season is going to go pear shaped, next week is massive as we know ben arfa and fergie have to play for more attacking options, im hugely disoppointed this evening, it all needs a shake.

pardew is too blame for this sh1te. we were 2-0 up and the whole first half we were second best… they looked like scoring… what does pardew do at HT, tell our players to sit back? what a load of cr4p.

they score its 2-1 what does paredew do NOTHING keeps us sitting back, a free kick what does pardew do, he puts ben arfa on and takes of our best player of the day. and then puts guthrie on for raylor? nice a 4-4-1-1 a more defensive formation… what happens they score we fianally do something but seen so we are missing our main threat we had no chance,

the people blaming ben arfa neeed to re-watch the game. Guthrie was our worst player with not a single pass accurate or dribble complete… Cisse got took off leaving ba by himself… what have we learned already Ba CANT play lone striker… ben arfa has no options… he completed most of his passes and made 2 mistakes… only krul, colo.santon and cisse made less… ben arfa wasnt great but only him and cisse looked threatening jonas did for one shot…

we shud of left guthrie on the bench and brought benny on for raylor…

we then put shola on for a 4-4-2 and guess what… ba was still playing solo striker as ameobi just tripped over himself…

krul had no chance for either goal

all in all if this run goes on pardew wont be manager next season… 6games with out a win at SJP and in the last 4 games conceded more then12 goals…

  • 604 okkurtgarvilt // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:07 PM

cabaye was absolutely horrible today, okey, his workrate was good, but every single pass was poor.
FFS give Ben Arfa a break, he has NO match fitness, so he can’t be our savior, pardew has to give him more match experience for him to be at his best, but he isn’t giving him that.
Jonas was pretty poor today, giving the ball away far too often.
Poor performance from us, underestemating wolves as soon as we go 2 – 0 up.

I’d rather lose 1-0 than that,,even from a team like Wolverhampton.

  • 607 Rotonda heights // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:08 PM

You never ever make a sub at a corner or a free kick and definitely not 2 subs at a free kick and some people are saying pards for England, yes please.

  • 608 Oleg G // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:09 PM

By the way – I hope you lot compare HBA loosing ball with all the other players loosing ball. Just a thing is, that it is much more noticeable when a player is trying to do something and loses the ball (HBA) and other player who don’t know what to do with the ball so they just kick it out/away/to hell, just because they are afraid to do something with it (Simmo, Krul, Raylor, Guthrie, Cabaye).
Sometimes Tiote is trying to do something but mostly simple things, and Jonas is loosing the ball a lot because he is trying to do something with it.

HBA doesn’t like to give the ball away by kicking it to nowhere, he is a responsible player that prefers to wait for a better passing option and keep the ball for another second. But again, these tactics are shit, and no one is coming to help, so yes, he is loosing the ball “more”. Just look home many times each player passes the ball to nowhere and looses it, what is the difference?

  • 609 brighter // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:09 PM

There were at least two opportunities where he could have crossed for the other FOUR men in the box but no. Obertan should have been on not Guthrie. I love Danny but 3 central midfielders is too many and he isn’t a winger. We should have ended

    Krul

I have to disagree. I think a lot of fans are getting carried away with how good our players are because Pardew has made a few really really bad players overperform.

Then today, when they revert to type, everyone’s shocked.

Simpson, Taylor & Williamson, for example, really are not good enough for even a top 7 team, when you compare the equivalent players at Arsenal, Liverpool & Chelsea.

Jonas looks knackered and Obertan hasnt done it atall! i like taylor and hes solid but if benny can get his decision making up which will hopefully come with games he’s head and shoulders ahead! i wouldnt be saying this if we were in with a shout for 4th but i don’t think we are, nothing to lose!

Re: HBA – he did create two goal opportunities, just wide to both sides of the net.

I’d like to see us move to a 4-3-3 with Cisse, Ba, and HBA up front.

    Thoughts?

  • 629 MagPieMan // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Very poor tactics from Pardew today for the two substitutions. Every manager KNOWS that you NEVER make subs while defending corners, free kicks and throwings in you half. It just makes it even worse that he made two subs, that means there are two players who haven’t had any tim to get into the rhythm of the game and don’t know who to pick up.

Another thing, why are people shouting for Ben Arfas head? He came into the game when we had just lost a goal, every ones head was down and no one was playing well at that time. To ask him to come on after no playing time and coming off the bench to change the game in those condition was too much. He tried his hardest and got very close to scoring. people are complaining about him losing the ball to much but he only lost it because he trying get an attack going and change the game. Would you rather him come off the bench to do backwards passing and make no runs?

the goal differance has proved it all along and so has the fact we conceded 3+ when ever we loose a game.
the performance of the players today is starting to raise questions that as well as lack of competition are those who need a contract starting to just mimic a michel oven colo was ok guthrie poor simpson been poor for weeks MOTM cisse

  • 632 AussieToon // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:13 PM

Ben Arfa did more in his 15 minutes than most of the other plonkers in the team.

    A decent manager would play a 4-3-3.

Would have Ben Arfa, BA and Cisse up front. He would go for the win at home. Not sit back and be outplayed. Then if the momentum switches, he would revert to a 4-5-1 and get possession back and control the tempo, then once we look more in control, we would switch back to 433 again.

Simple fact is we have a deplorable manager who is content to carry some truly horrible players.

Things won’t improve and change with him here.

  • 640 Tommyy // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:15 PM

Those saying our team has been turned into workhorses is so true! We’ve been negating quality more and more since the start of the season.
It must be something to do with the pressure of being so high up the table that Pardew is afraid to lose games so works so hard on defending and running. But the defence has been in tatters since Christmas and the midfield and attack seem to have lost any skill or quality.
Anybody says we are overreacting needs to watch our games since Christmas and see how poor and lucky we have been. We need an attacking coach, and pronto.

With all going on and on about HBA and how bad he is. Who was better?
Ba didn’t do much, Cisse either. Only ones who worked really were Jonas and Santon (Jonas lost loads of possession). Cabaye was good for 20-25 mins of the game, Tiote was solid most of the game. But who player better than HBA, and when I say better I mean – who could have given us the 3 points?
Between the second goal and him coming on, we almost didn’t threat the opposition.

I don’t know if i will have time, but if I will, I will really sit to count those stats, just to prove for myself and for you, that in reality, pure numbers, HBA player better then most of our team.

I think the problem with Ben Arfa is he just gives away the ball far too much. We seem to lose any drive down the middle whenever he comes on and we’re always playing around him. He’s a great player in flashes but his decision-making as of late has been bad…

I’m not denying the fact that he’s a game changer but I don’t think our team is good enough right now to play him because of the amount he gives away the ball.

This is definitely the form of an overachieving side on the slide. Better teams than us go through bad patches – look at the gooners – but we need to get out of this pdq cos we don’t want to get embarrassed by the scum.

    “santon=willo=collo=fergie
    obertan=tiote-cabaye=hba
    demba=other demba!!!!!!!!!!”

    nice formation must admit….

This is really sad….what is happening ….but amazing that Pardew is showing that we where indeed lucky himself now….and showing the doubters had some sense… I was so excited and now I am depressed, I was out and could not wait to come back home I feel really down now….2:2 against WOLVES!!!!!…..at HOME….we annihilated them last year….

  • 665 ToonDownSouth // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:22 PM

    HatemOrLoveHim

Hahahahaha. Are you actually serious? Have you SEEN Sunderland play? They sit 11 men behind the ball for the entire 90 minutes, and play long balls for strikers to run on to.

Plenty of complaints about Pardews tactics are understandable, but the notion that O’Neill plays decen football is hilarious!

  • 666 Rotonda heights // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:22 PM

    hatem or love him

Again spot on but why is it we can all see it but pardew can’t. Why is guti always played left anyway, zero attacking input.

  • 667 jayphoto // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:22 PM

Lyon vs Paris St Germain now i think! Hoping for a Lyon win,i’d love it if montpellier won the title!

I don’t know about the others, but after watching that Spurs game (and I didn’t turn it off), after players coming back and 2 weeks to reorganize against a poor team like this, I don’t know about you, but I am angry, really angry. Waiting for this for 2 weeks and this what we get?

    it cud happen

  • 670 Nufc-83 // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:22 PM

    Simple post here:

Williamson is an utter disgrace to profesional football he has no technical abilty at all and is so weak for his size. With him CB for the rest of the season then sloppy goals will be leaked for certain.

  • 671 ilovetoon8788 // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:23 PM

The last thing we need is change of manager. I just hope Pardew learns to be a better tactician.

  • 672 niafron // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:23 PM

@Rowan milsted, TDS and all the others.

Well, was a disapointing game, so, in such case, would be probably more wise to simply forget football for a couple of day.

We will speak of that again later, everybody need time to be more cool with that.

    GOt to go.

    Bonne soirée messieurs.

  • 673 toonheroes // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:24 PM

    Cisse
    ba benny
    cabaye
    Fergy Obertan
    Tiote
santon collo (anyone else but willo) raylor
    krul

That’s the kind of fast attacking team we should be playing at home against a team like wolves. Exciting, dynamic and confident. Should really have taken them apart today. Big lost chance

  • 674 Rotonda heights // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:24 PM

    TDS

Have to agree, O’neil is another long ball merchant and outside of celtic, where my gran could probably win the title, what has he ever really done?

  • 675 YankToonFan // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:24 PM

It would NEVER happen, but I’d take Hughton back today.

  • 676 WWJBD // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Paid money to sit through that tripe. Am not one for rash shouts but I am angry at that display not disappointed angry.

    Pardew was extremely poor today

  • 677 cally22001 // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Even if worst case happens and we finish say 8th that is still a good season. Some people forget that. We are an overachieving side, and we are allowed a bad game here and there.

  • 678 Rotonda heights // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:25 PM

    toonheroes,

that was my team today, it’s never going to happen with this jerk.

    YankToonFan // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:12 PM

At some games we all would probably like that (except those who think that HBA should be sent back to France), but that won’t happen. Just as simple as that, we are talking about it here for weeks now, but AP will never try it.

  • 680 gorgonzola // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:25 PM

    I am personally worried cause..

“We played badly. No excuses.mbut please everyone have some perspective.”

we have been playing badly for about 5 games or so in real honesty….and this is worrying….this was a WIN WIN WIN game for us and now its thrown away….I feel sick….

I love this club so much and I am not even from Newcastle, but reading the same pardews BAD tactic that gives us away on numerous occasions is getting a bit tiring must say….

nevermind, I keep the faith, its not all lost …It just amazes me…

That Pardew is not sick of his own damn self and his rigid tactics that so far…HAVE NOT WORKED….

    HWTL!!!!!!

  • 681 GeordieGesus // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Like I said before HBA is SH!T. Every time he got the ball I knew he would lose it or go over the line with it. Ameobi on now that was a decent move from Pardew.

  • 682 Brutooon // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:26 PM

toontime : my point was Tim Krul look a better keeper when Steve Harper is our backup, at least some competition and krul will perform better.

  • 683 TimKrulFan // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Williamson and HBA need to go the fat pr1ck didn’t buy a cb when we have the worse cb in pl

  • 684 AussieToon // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Players who cannot play one touch football, should be booted out the door. Simpson, Williamson, Ryan Taylor, Guthrie, Perch etc etc. These guys will not cut it in Europe. That’s the level an ambitious club sets and we don;t need and want Stoke type hoof ball.

    Felt for three players today.

Cisse, Ba and Cabaye. This is not thier natural game, they are running around like headless chickens and it must be frustrating. Lucky they are all class and good people.

Those having a go at Cabaye, LOL. Some do not understand football. He is playing all over the park, been drawn all over the place because of the role Pardew has for him. He is a player that creates space for himself and needs the ball in his possession. At the moment, with the negative tactics, he is having to think DEFEND first and it is costing him his natural game.

If people cannot see the damage Pardew is doing, I fear for you.

We have now got some class players. Time to build on that and with a good manager.

Rafa Benitez, yes he will be better.

  • 685 Rotonda heights // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:27 PM

    cally

if it hadn’t been for pardew’s stupid tactics when we were 3-0 up againt wba last game of last season we would have finished 8.

  • 686 gorgonzola // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:28 PM

    YankToonFan

“It would NEVER happen, but I’d take Hughton back today.”

I was really really really upset to see him go and I was REALLY skeptical of Pardew.

Games like today just strengthen that belief ….and here come the warriors saying we are doing well.. :)

  • 687 Rowan Milsted // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:28 PM

We don’t need a change of manager. But we do need to adjust our tactics. We have to learn from this and move on, and fast. I hope we do. This is still a good season so far, and could be magnificent. Howay the lads

  • 692 LGFUAD21 // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:32 PM

One thing we miss is Barton’s drive.

We always seem to stop playing when we are ahead.

We were flawed in every sense today.

    BUT

Dont get the amount of stick HBA is getting. Everybody on here spends all week saying “HBA needs to play”. He gets one game and now everyone is saying “Sell him”

You guys have about as much consistency and conviction as Nick Clegg (perennial cum bucket to David Cameron).

HBA lost the ball no more than Jonas did. But at least he opened the team up every so slightly.

I like Pards but yes his tactics are off at times. We can sit here all day and dream of having Brendon Rogers (the master tactician here) but it;s not gonna happen.

We have gotten to that point in the season where we just look tired every game.

For me, something needs to be done about both wings.

  • 693 Rotonda heights // Feb 25, 2012 at 5:33 PM

    Aussie,

    Couldn’t agree more mate.

The trouble is we’ve got some good technical players courtesy of Carr and trying to get them to play english hoof ball just makes the game bypass them.

Would love to see benny and the rest stay and pardew on his way and a good technical footballing coach take over. Pardew has been found out. Nobody but nobody does a double sub on a free kick / corner. The guy is a moron.

Haha I know mate but I am fuming at that display. We lost the match at 30 minutes and let Wolves take over until they had equalized and parked the bus
