Newcastle’s 18 year-old goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has been training with the first team at the club’s Benton training facility.
Jak Alnwick – training with first team squad
Alnwick is the younger brother of former Sunderland goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, who is currently at Tottenham, but has had many loan spells over the last five years, with time spent at Luton Town, Leicester City, Carlisle United, Norwich City and others.
Jak has played for the England Youth sides at U18 and U20 levels, and the Hexham-born youngster joined Newcastle from Sunderland back in 2008, and is starting to catch the eye on Tyneside.
6’2″ tall Jak is training with Tim Krul, Steve Harper and Rob Elliot as part of the first team squad, and we expect Steve Harper to move on after 19 years on Tyneside, as it seems Steve wants to play again, before he will finally retires, maybe in a couple of years or so.
The plan seems to be to bring in another goalkeeper in the summer to challenge Rob Elliot as the back-up goalkeeper to 23 year-old Dutch International Tim Krul, who could be playing for Holland against England tonight at Wembley.
But it will probably depend on how well young Jak looks in training, and maybe Jak will make the step up to the first team squad as early as next season, and he was certainly outstanding on loan at Gateshead earlier in the season, when he made a total of 8 appearances.
We also wouldn’t be at all surprised if 23 year-old Fraser Forster, who was also born in Hexham, is moved on in the summer, probably to Glasgow Celtic, but some English clubs could be interested in the 6’7″ goalkeeper.
It could be all change with the goalkeepers at Newcastle in the summer, with both Steve Harper and Fraser Forster leaving the club, and Jak Alnwick getting his chance in the first team squad.
