Newcastle After Belgium Center-Back – But Not Vertonghen

We had put out this article just before the Newcastle vs Sunderland game – and are re-releasing it  so to speak,  since it got lost in the drama surrounding all the news of the derby game yesterday.

The Sunday Sun reported yesterday that Newcastle are interested in Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld.

Toby Alderweireld – Ajax and Belgium International center-back

The news is that Toby Alderweireld will have been watched when the club was checking out another Belgian International center-back at Ajax – Jan Vertonghen.

We don’t think Newcastle will be able to sign Vertonghen, with his preference being to join Tottenham and he’s probably too expensive in any case, but it seems that Newcastle are turning their attention to his Ajax and Belgian International colleague, Toby Alderweireld.

The 6’1″ center-back who is right-footed turned 23 on Friday, and he was born in Antwerp and has played for Belgium 16 times, and he also played for his country at U17, U19 and U21 level, making his full debut back in 2009 against the Czech Republic.

Tony has played 125 times for Ajax with 10 goals since making his debut back in 2008, and he has been at Ajax since he joined the Ajax Academy back in 20004, from Belgium club Beerschot AC.

Tony is a regular in the Ajax side having started 19 games in the Eredevise this season, and of course he scored the 87th minute winner in Ajax’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the Europa Cup a week last Thursday.

In all games in all competitions this season, he has started 34 times for Ajax with 3 goals and 3 assists.

The news is that the Newcastle scouts have been watching both Ajax center-backs this season, but we have to think we have more chance of signing Alderweireld than Vertonghen.

What do you think?

Martin o.Neil is a complete tit .. decisions went newcastles way in second half.. what bout the turner handball which was a nailed on pen.. the shove on demba ba in area which 8/10 aren’t given but he gave there’s for a pull so a push should certainly be given or the one where Richardson i think it was shoulder barge benny in box who goes down albeit like he’d been shot.. think you will find Mr o.Neil the decisions went in your favour

i’ve been saying since we first looked at vertonghan that I thought alderweireld is a better option! More solid defensively! he’s not as menacing as vertonghan going going forward but got a great long shot on him too, reminds me a lot of Dan Agger!

agree about twaddle showed his true colours …does that mean cattermole misses extra games as he already was missing two by virtue of yellow ?…hatem has to be given free role behind ba .for away games and .. drop simpson and play raylor rb for home games

Douglas got a direct Red card for Twente yesterday for reacting to a dodgy challenge from one of the PSV players!

As far as regards the two defenders from Ajax! Prefer the Alderweirld than Vertjongen if we try and sign anyone from Ajax!

Looks like Newcastle are serious about him. I’d buy him rightaway, cuz bigger clubs are also spotting him. He has great vision, great short & long passing (like kompany), likes to go forward and has a great long shot. I’d pick him over Verthongen anytime. He’s also capable to play RB as he is 1st choice RB for the national team.
Could be the next Philip Albert.

One of this guy :toby alderweild, steven caulker and grant Henley would be my favourite CB nufc to sign.

and Mbiwa, tomkins and douglas were my second preference.

and we need a young, hot prospect, good and cheap (ashley’s wish) striker, which i reckon Emmanuel Mayuka(BSC young boys) and Ante Vukusic(hajduk Split) would very, very good to sign.
Those 2guys have performed really well, and im sure by this time next 2years, their value will increase at least by twice.
