Ben Arfa And Obertan Start – Cisse on Bench

Hatem Ben Arfa and Gabriel Obertan both get starts tonight at the Emirates against Arsenal.

That follows Ben Arfa’s outstanding second-half display against Sunderland last weekend.

And Obertan must have impressed in the Reserves last week, and manager Alan Pardew decided to start the French duo.

Papiss Cisse is a sub so it looks like Newcastle are playing 4-5-1 tonight.

And it could be that Ben Arfa plays the second striker role behind Demba Ba.

Davide Santon retains his place at right back and there’s no Ryan Taylor – so we suppose he must be injured – and Haris Vuckic is on the bench, having returned from his loan spell at Cardiff City.

For Arsenal Ramsey, Arteta and Santos all return in what looks a very strong side, with Oxlade-Chamberlain also in the starting line-up.

Teams:

Arsenal : Szczesny, Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Song, Arteta, Rosicky, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Van Persie; Subs: Fabianski, Djourou, Santos, Ramsey, Benayoun, Gervinho, Chamakh

Newcastle United (4-5-1): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Davide Santon; Gabriel Obertan, Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez, Hatem Ben Arfa; Demba Ba
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, James Perch, Dan Gosling, Danny Guthrie, Haris Vuckic, Shola Ameobi, Papiss Cisse

    Apologies, repost:

Obertan HAS to play literally a thousand times better than he did on Thursday for the reserves. I’ve never seen a first team player give such an unconvincing performance against literally an u18?s side.

He has the ability to play at premiership level, he just needs to believe he can. Let’s hope he has his game face on tonight.

    Obertan vs Gibbs
    Ba and Benny vs Koscienly

    Could be difference makers.

if HBA does well today then pardew can’t use the excuse of not being find a position for him as with or without cisse starting he can still play him behind the forwards

Looks like we’re going for the solid midfield and counterattacking wide option. Benny can drop into the hole as well as play on the wing so it looks a flexible starting eleven. Obertan is okay at tracking back so might counteract some of their wing play.
Here’s hoping….we get it right tactically… and the guys turn it on

Probably our most techinal team all playing? only worry I have is they haven’t all played together before, and if we have only been working on it for one week in training, is it going to be enough?
Really hope we play some neat stuff! This team has the ability! really buzzing now.

as for the bad tactics constant team i think they will be stupid blaming the starting team for todays match because apart from guthrie i don’t think there would have been any other player he could have used in starting 11

THIS is the starting 11 i’ve been waiting for all bloody season.
If we can’t give em trouble with this, then it’s certainly not Pardews fault.

    Howay the lads!

Who is out wide, Benny or Gabby? Instinct says it is Gabby with Benny behind Ba, but Benny on the right was awesome against mackems, and Gabs has pace to burn going in behind the defence. Would like to see them rotate really, mix up Koscielny a treat

    it’s either a 4-5-1 – or if lucky a 4-2-3-1 or it’s a 4-3-3 formation tonite.

I really hope for a 4-3-3 tonite ’cause that’s how we look the best 🙂

Christ lay off Simpson. He plays next to the worst centre back in the league. Anyone would struggle playing there.

Interesting point from Neville on Sky sports who just said at Man Utd, Obertan hated playing on the wing. He only enjoys playing in the hole behind the striker and because Man Utd couldn’t accommodate him in that position, they sold him.

So maybe that’s why we’re not seeing the best of him because he is playing out of position.

Interesting line up lets see if it works. I could see Obertan and Benny switching between the right and behind Ba. Both have pass and they certainly give us some counter attacking options. They both have enough pace to go from defence to attack fairly quickly so lets hope the can both put in good shifts.
