Are Newcastle After This Top Young Dutch Center-Back?

News from Holland today that Newcastle are watching FC Groningen’s young Dutch defender, Virgil van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk – 20 year-old center-back
Smile – you’re on candid camera

The 20 year-old Dutch U21 International central defender stands 6’4″ tall,  and if the Dutch news service RTV Noord is to be believed,  Newcastle are really interested in this player.

Newcastle will need to bring in another center-back during the summer, and if they can get a top youngster like van Dijk, he could challenge Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson for a starting position in the Newcastle side next season.

And with being young,  he will have some  time to adjust to the English Premier League, with little pressure on him.

RTV Noord   are reporting that Newcastle have been in contact with his agent, Henk Chin, and it seems that his club have also confirmed Newcastle’s interest.

The youngster has appeared 27 times for FC Groningen with 5 goals and 2 assists over the last couple of seasons, and he is one of the top youngsters in the Eredivisie.

The lad is said to be good friends with Chelsea’ Patrick van Aanholt, who was on loan at Newcastle in February of 2010 on Tyneside, and appeared 7 times when Jose Enrique was out injured.

Patrick is currently on loan at Dutch club Vitesse, and we wonder if Newcastle could still be interested in the 21 year-old Dutch U21 International?

Newcastle began their interest in van Dijk early last year, but it would not surprise us if a number of top youngsters arrive at Newcastle this summer, and the Magpies already seem to have done their homework for the coming summer transfer window.

The lad is contracted to Groningen through the summer of 2015, after signing a contract extension last September, so some fee will have to be paid if Newcastle bring him to Tyneside.

From what we can tell,  this lad  looks like an impressive youngster, and we’ll just have to see if he’s one who will be coming through the door  in the summer.

Here’s some video of Virgil van Dijk, and that’s him scoring his first ever goal  for Groningen – and he looks a big lad – and presumably good in the air.

What do you think?

Hoilett scores, if blackburn wins, we’ll have to lose 4 matches and sunderland has to win 4 matches to overtake us.
    NOT HAPPENING!

It’s been very quiet davy. We’ve been discussing syrup and grammar mostly.
I read the article about Bayern, i reckon they’d have to pay big bucks to get Hoilett to Germany imo.
It’s a lesser league overall compared to the PL. I doubt Hoilett would do it if it was serious. Also, there’s less money in the german league compared to the PL.
Last englishman i remember playing in germany was Heargreves.

Northern Tiger @ 71 previous thread

Everyone should read this analysis at least twice.
It confirms what a lot of us have been saying that the club is on the up but that European Football will take us up a level and maybe we have to speculate to accumulate. Only Arsenal in the EPL have a net spend less on transfers than us in the past four years and we still have a way to go in achieving the squad strength we will need for regular CL football. Doesn’t have to be bank breaking just sensible.

Dannyo – Syrup & Grammar lol that has to be the way to describe not much happening from now on – I will definitely use that ha ha hang on let me put me glass down I’m gonna spill it all….. 🙂

Hoilett gets talked about a lot on the blog and I would be surprised if there’s not some grain of truth we would throw an o.n.o. type cheeky bid in for him – we have to be a step up, surely? Just wish his name didn’t sound like toilet, but that’s me being picky, not a deal-breaker.

I hope they do stay up as Steve Kean has had a rough ride from their fans and he could stick two fingers up at them if he keeps them up

Did i ever tell you about the time Chiek Tiote uppercutted a Horse, the resulting creature became known as the Giraffe. Half an hour later Chiek returned, dissatisfied with his previous work he uppercutted said Giraffe, it became known as a Brachiosaurus. After a brief discussion over a strawberry syrup with Demba Ba, Chiek decided to return once more and uppercut the Brachiosaurus into extinction.

I cannot understand it if we’re not in for him at all, however, it’ll depend who else is in for him and what position we finish in imo.
Do the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd, City, Arsenal, Tottenham need him? I doubt it tbh.
I won’t count Liverpool, just cause i despise as much as the mackems.

Yes and sticking with Pardew and letting him grow with the club will stabilise and help us. Sure he makes mistakes but I’m beginning to think his heart is in the right place and he’s loving being here and appreciates the fans

I’d rather we went in for the great ball playing nationals – the Dutch, French and other skill based European players so we can move to being a really skilled side without the hoofers from the Championship teams

I hope Kean keeps them up and then quits at the end of the season, without a goodbye, for a club with more supportive fans. I especially want him to win at the expense of the unbathed heathen. C’mon Blackburn!

Hoilett just exactly one of the people to strengthen our squad, right age and out of contract. Unfortunately, he won’t be a bargain, too exposed and well-touted, so we’ll never see him in the black and white. Pity.

Plus they have a manager who speaks in a language I don’t understand, a glory-hunter, money – grabbing hooligan, a racist and Dirk Kuyt. Need I go on?

(I said bout this last post)

I think blackburn fans should have a mass ‘parade’ saying sorry kean after what happend earlier, they boycotted the games for no reason and now they act like it never happend, unless they say sorry kean wont forget! and if he gets an offer he will drop blackburn, and I bet they will complain…
