Newcastle The Big Surprise Team In The Premier League

After Newcastle lost Andy Carroll,  Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Jose Enrique last year, Newcastle have been the real surprise team in the Premier League this season.

Danny Guthrie – getting into Europa League would be fantastic

And while the players who have left have not all fared well, Newcastle are going great guns in the league in 6th position, and 5 points clear of  Liverpool, whom Andy and Jose joined last year.

Jose looks as good as he was at Newcastle, but Andy is struggling to score goals and justify his massive £35M price tag.

To think that last summer there were fears among some Newcastle fans, that we could even be in a relegation fight this season, but it just hasn’t materialized.

And in the first 50 league games with Alan Pardew in charge, he’s done better than everybody else except Kevin Keegan, in his so far successful if short reign as the Newcastle manager.

It’s an open question as to whether Danny Guthrie will want to stay at Newcastle when his contract runs out in June, because he’s not getting the playing time he wants.

But the former Liverpool midfielder says the squad is motivated for the run-in to the season.

This is what Danny boy told the local press today:

“Getting into the Europa League would be fantastic for us because it wasn’t expected of us at the start of the season. It’s within our grasp. If we keep working in the last nine games, we can get there.”

“We just need to show our determination now until the end of the season.”    “It will be tough on Sunday– the away games are always difficult – but hopefully we’ll have a couple of players back.”

“Then there will be a few more options for the manager.”   “Sometimes the spirit is enough. They always say that good teams win when they don’t play well.”

“Norwich was tough, they’re a side in the top 10 and we know how difficult it is to get in there.”  “We said in that game, a clean sheet would win it.”  “And that’s exactly what happened.”

West Brom are usually a better side on the road than at home this season, but that may be changing because they have beaten Sunderland 4-0 and Chelsea 1-0 in their last two league games at The Hawthorns.

We know it’s going to be a tough game on Sunday,  and we’d be happy enough with a point, but if our lads can start to play well, we could even pick up all 3 points, for the second game running.

Howay The Lads!!

Guthries comment being in Europe would be great, yes if he stays at the Toon cant see any of the top five wanting leaving Livershite already in Europa League, whos left Aston Villa no chance they will get into Europe this season. If he does leave he will only be taking a backward step

It is amazing how our perception of players changes. A few weeks ago Perch was practically the anti-christ. Now he is in demand to play DM, CB & FB. One bad game and I’m sure we’ll all go back to slagging him off again! 🙂

@5 Aye it was the same with Best last season, and with Strolla every now and then. But to be fair though, its not just one performance from Perch that has suddenly changed people’s views of him.

He has put in a couple solid performances in DM over the season now.

Papiss…I can safely say that formation wont be used. Our defence has struggled enough (even with 2 CDM’s in front) with four, let alone 3. Don’t think Colo can cover mistakes from the left and right. We’ll get a new one torn.

You would expect to score some too with that formation. Either way, no chance Pardew will do it

On Perch, a few of us said not to judge the lad in his first season and that he always gave 100%.

Probably the same few who are supporting Obertan during his first season?

We need at least two new strikers.

When Ba & Cisse go to the ACN next winter we’ll be left with Best & Shola.

Best and Shola are both injury-prone.

Perch, simpson and Williamson the 3 worst defenders in the Premiership followed by 60 minutes Guthrie, obertan, raylor as the 3 worst midfielders and Lovenkrands, ranger and ameobi the 3 worst strikers in the premiership. Get shot of these 9 dead beats and the manager and we might be in business!

I’m sure Lee Clark’s been consulted about Rhodes.

It’ll be interesting to see who we buy to replace Lovenkrands.
I hope we sell Best, he has some great touches but lacks the killer instinct needed in a top 6 team.

Jakesome @20 – take note, serious bloggers/actual Toon fans. 🙂

The formula for players who seem to be linked to sideways moves to nowhere is simple – develop and play well enough to get a regular start. TBF about the likes of Perch, he has been criticised mostly as an effect of being played in odd positions, such as CB which don’t suit him. The ones who harp on about him and others being ‘championship players at best’ don’t know enough about the game or the player to realise this. I may have given him a tough time myself but I am always prepared to eat it when he does well in a different role, such as in the Norwich game. Same goes for Obertan, I still think he needs time and his proper position, he can still do well.

Serious bloggers and actual toon fans? On here? Tsunki, where do you think you are?

Completely agree with what you’ve said. Based on the role they play at the club, I think Perch, Raylor and to an extent Guthrie have all done pretty well. Always seen as back-up / utility players, but give there all when called upon, no matter the position. Players are going to have bad games, doesn’t mean they don’t have a place in our squad

Good match previews by Sky in the “Heavy mettle” article.
If only Lawro could be as objective, but we all know he’s biased.
Hence, he should never write an official article giving objective views.

One of the few people with logic left.

They who shall not be named do talk some proper sh!te. I wonder if they’ve even been watching games this season

Guthrie is far from one of the worst CM’ss in the prem. Back in Jan/Feb he was possibly one of our best players on the pitch.

Completely unfounded to say Simmo has to go.

    Sick of arguing this point.

Raylor’s form has dropped but lets not forget how many good shifts he put in at LB against people like Walcott and even Bale. Or his Man U game, his Scum goal.

We need to keep players like Simmo (get a better first choice in mind) but to have someone like Simmo as a squad player would be great.

Simmo would easily walk into Manure’s second string this season.

There’s dreaming and being realistic. Certain people are guilty of taking both to the extreme.

Bob, Billy, Ted, Matthew, Mark, Luke & F*****g John go and support Man City you tw@ts. Your negativity stagnates this blog. You’re not fans.
