Liverpool were beaten for the second time running by a team in the bottom three of the Premier League, this afternoon at Anfield.
Gary Caldwell scores winner at Anfield this afternoon
The Reds seemed to be coasting at QPR during the week, and they were 2-0 up with just 13 minutes to play, but they managed to leak three goals to QPR and lost that game 3-2.
And today Wigan had a rare win as they defeated Liverpool 2-1, and now have 4 points from their last three games, and it was a goal by the Wigan captain and former Newcastle Junior, Gary Caldwell, that won the game for Wigan.
Alan Pardew was seen at the game, and Newcastle have to play Liverpool at home a week tomorrow, and Wigan away on April 28th. It was the first win ever for Wigan at Anfield.
In the early game, Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham, and Spurs seemed to have the better chances in that game, but it now means that if Newcastle can beat West Brom tomorrow, we will go to 50 points and level with Chelsea, but we have a much inferior goal difference.
Of the top teams today, only Arsenal kept on their winning ways with a 3-0 win against the hapless Aston Villa, and Shay Given was at fault for the first goal, a rare mistake by the former Newcastle goalkeeper.
But Arsene Wenger has re-energized his London side, and they now have 7 wins on the trot with only Newcastle almost ending that winning streak, and it looks like Arsene’s record of never finishing out of the top four will continue this season.
Arsenal are now 3 points ahead of their north London rivals Tottenham in 3rd place on 58 points, and Spurs have taken only 2 points from the last 15.
And Manchester City came back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Stoke, but that will look like 2 points dropped, and it was a fantastic strike by Peter Crouch that put the Potters ahead in the second half.
Peter hit the ball on the volley from out side the penalty box, for one of the best goals he’s ever scored, and a probable candidate for goal of the season.
And if Newcastle win tomorrow they will be only 5 points behind Tottenham, and maybe, just maybe, with a good run-in to the season Newcastle could even catch the north London side, but it’s highly unlikely (but possible).
And why was Alex McLeish ever appointed as Villa manager after he took Birmiongham City down last year?
Villa are now 15th in the league table, and they are a far cry from the team that Martin O’Neill built, that finished in the top six three seasons in a row.
And talking of O’ Neil, QPR couldn’t get their second win on the trot as they were beaten 3-1 at Sunderland, and Martin O’Neill’s side were helped when Djibril Cisse got himself sent off for a two-footed tackle on Fraizer Campbell, and was shown a straight red card by referee Mike Jones.
It was the second time that he has been sent off while at QPR, and will now serve a four match ban, which will hardly help his side, and Joey Barton was on the bench today, after a poor performance against Liverpool during the week.
Bolton returned to action after the tragic events concerning Fabrice Muamba last Saturday, and they won 2-1 against Blackburn, with two first half goals coming form former Middlesbrough center-back David Wheater and they moved out of the bottom three with the win.
I certainly am glad Bolton won the game today, and hope they do well in all their remaining games – expect against Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Monday night, 9th April – of course.
So the results seem to have again gone Newcastle’s way today – but it is now up to our lads to show they are a good team, and we are hoping that Newcastle can get the win at The Hawthorns tomorrow afternoon.
Certainly a win would completely energize the Newcastle fans – and the players too!
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #5No need to warn anyone about the little mackem he’s in bed but I still feel duty-bound as HOVAST to do so.
Anyway, Ed – have you just coined the bath-dodgers new catchphrase for the end of the season with this post title? I know for a fact also that the scousers will be saying this is the only reason we smacked them down the table. Not that we had a good season, were fairly consistent despite our thin squad, acon, injuries etc. Not complaining though, if we drew every game but everyone above us lost I would probably take it.

Comment #12Toon Tang – King Kenny’s Klanfield? ooohhhhh! There’s not much to like about them is there? Isn’t it funny that a few years ago I sneakingly admired them for their robust, hard working doggedness, not quite as smug as ManUre in their ‘heritage’. The hilarity of them throwing cash they couldn’t afford away on Carroll and oh its so funny when you say it now but they bought Downing ha ha. Suarez was their salvation right up until……well never mind, eh? 🙂

Comment #15Get in there Wigan, their first win against Liverpool means no matter what happens we stay five points clear next week. And if Newcastle do what is achievable and get the three points, we could be 8points clear. I hope Newcastle play well tomorrow, especially as they’re the only prem teams playing so plenty will be watching.

Comment #17They’ll keep spending until they’re in trouble Liverpool. And lets be realistic the way they’re going they don’t look like winning the league or Champions League anytime soon. I think unless they change the way they bring in players they’ll keep struggling. I still think it could come down to the result against Liverpool at home though. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. HWTL!

Comment #18We really need to turn in a solid adventurous performance tomorrow. Its serious. Right now we are perfectly positioned, results have gone are way and these 3 points could prove pivotal. We need to chase down which is no easy feat.
And yeah, were the only prem game tomorrow so all eyes on us and the pressure’s on. We can’t loose this. Even if we win by one precision strike and the rest’s skin and teeth stuff. We need to win

well the way results have gone for us today and the fact pardew is likely to play perch and possibly guthrie while cisse or santon could be benched. if we lost he could be in for a lot of abuse of those so called fans such as beattie.
so although i hope pardew doesn’t really do it, it might be a good idea is play this team against WBA

HBA__abeid_cabaye_jonas
________cisse__ba____
at half time if we were loosing switch it to the team me and most other true fans want
off abeid on perch
off ferg on simpson
maybe off cisse on guthrie
then when the interview comes say in it
you bloggers should stick to fifa 2012 and let me manage the proper team.

Comment #40cheick Norris / PbNcl – that’s it I am the HANSOV not the HOVAST – someone told me yesterday that I was the HOVAST even though I knew I had something to do with water and the navy or summat. Anyway I took my demotion like a man but now I am pleased to be back where I belong.
Please don’t laugh at me for being an optimist or I may have to shoot myself and move to Whitburn, not necessarily in that order. I am an official optimist because I never slagged of AP, never said said we would be relegated again, and even did stupidly optimistic things like say we would beat Arsenal. A man can’t get more optimistic than that, can he?
