What’s The Situation With Danny Simpson?

11:12 am, Wednesday, March 28th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 58 Comments

Danny Simpson has been a big part of Newcastle’s fantastic revival,  since we were relegated in May of 2009.

Danny Simpson – wants European football - when will he sign new deal?

At that time things seemed all gloom and doom, but to think that a short 33 months later Newcastle are on 50 points, and joint 5th top of the league with Chelsea - nobody would have thought that was possible back in those dark days of hand wringing by Newcastle fans.

Newcastle brought in Danny Simpson on loan in that August, and signed him for a measly £500K from Manchester United the following January, and Danny has played 107 times for Newcastle with two goals and has been Newcastle’s first choice  right back during that time.

But whenever we read interviews with Danny, as in today’s local papers, we wonder his plans are – does he want to stay at Newcastle or leave?

Let’s see what Danny had to say today about Newcastle possibly qualifying for Europe:

“It would be great for me,” “I joined the club in the Championship, we won the title.” “We had a steady season and finished 12th, and to get into Europe in my third season would be great.”

“It would be a massive achievement for me and the lads, and for everyone at the club. It would be great progress for us.” “We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing all season. “

“We were brilliant against West Brom, and we’ve got to go again against Liverpool. We’re looking for more of the same.”  “We set ourselves targets with 10 games left, and we’ve won the first two of them.”

“If you’d have said at the start of the season we’d be eight points clear of Liverpool with eight games left, we’d be thrilled,” “When you look at the money they’ve spent, and that fact that they’re a massive club, it shows you we’re in a fantastic position.:

“In the last two games, we’ve really stepped up. We’ve set ourselves up for a great game against Liverpool.”

Liverpool have spent (wasted?) close to £120M in the transfer market in the time since Kenny Dalglish took over at Liverpool some 15 months ago.

And the former (unsuccessful) Newcastle manager is in need of some wins for Liverpool to justify all the big money he has spent on players, few of which have tuned out to be good buys.

That’s very unlike Newcastle, who in that same time frame, have acquired Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Gabby Obertan, Ben Arfa, Davide Santon and Sylvain Marveaux for around £25M in total.

And while those are good words from Danny Simpson above, when is the lad going to sign his new deal for Newcastle and commit to the club long term?

Danny’s contract runs out in about 16 months time, and Newcastle will sell him if he doesn’t sign a new deal by the summer.

Comments welcome.

  • 2 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Been vital to the club this season. Severely underrated player. How many times has he cleared off the line this season?

  • 3 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:15 AM

    Gerrard is past his prime.

    Our midfield can handle him/

  • 4 JAMSHA // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:18 AM

    @ ~Perchinho the Pheonix~

ya mate but he always scares us wen evea he plays against us

  • 5 Tommyy // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:19 AM

I don’t think Gerrard is past his prime form wise, certainly is fitness wise. Whenever he plays he is the heart of the game. If we are to be beaten I fully expect him to have had a massive hand in it.

  • 6 Tommyy // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:19 AM

    Or foot, so to speak.

  • 7 JAMSHA // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:21 AM

granpa, suarez and bellamy are a big treath for us, v need to keep them calm

  • 8 bassongs_of_praise // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:21 AM

He’s rubbish – thats what the situation is with Simpson.

  • 9 markmac // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:22 AM

yeh we deffo need to keep gerrard on a leash! he maybe over 30 and maybe past his best….but he can and still does deliver more than anyone else for the scousers !

  • 10 markmac // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:23 AM

that was aimed @5 by the way

  • 11 Alan_Pard_Who // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Don’t care about Simmo and I think he is rates exactly as his talent dictates.

I don’t think we should keep him as a squad player as his value Willo decrease from not playing and he will be unabppy sitting in the bench! If a club like Villa comes in for him in the summer for let’s say 3 million I’d snap their hands off.

He is decent but IMO we should look to upgrade in the summer.

  • 12 bollance // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:28 AM

Went to much when they beat us 5-0 at home. Gerard played between back 4 and midfield. For the whole match from sart to end he had about 10 yards minimum of space to pull the strings for them and that is exactly what he did. Shay Givens last game.

Now we have Tiote who plays in front of the back 4 usually between Simpson and Willo (watch closely next time he plays) so he should counter-act Gerard threat.

Not sure why Craig Bellend has not played too often of late? Hopefully he is being rested for cup semi.

  • 13 bollance // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:29 AM

    * much = match

  • 14 geoff777 // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Simpson is a really good defensive full-back.

Sure his game isn’t complete, but he only cost something like 500k.

He’s done a great job defensively this season.

With Guthrie, Cabaye, Jonas, HBA, Cisse and Ba bombing forward perhaps we don’t want our full-backs to far forward.

I hope he signs a new contract. If we’d paid 10M for him then perhaps he should do better in the final third. But for what we paid for him and the wages he’s on, he’s done nothing to warrant all the criticism.

C’mon Danny get signed up … you don’t want to end up at Blackburn or Villa do you?

    HWTL

  • 15 catchy in norway // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:31 AM

other than his goal line clearences , i carnt think of anything else he is good at, and if we intend to repeat this season next year its players like him williamson obertan perch shola that need to be replaced, there not first teamers, and at very best poor bench warmers to,, well shola can play against sunderland

  • 16 geoff777 // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:39 AM

    @catchy in norway

I have to disagree with you.
Williamson, Perch & Shola are great players to have on the bench. Willo & Shola are experienced EPL players. Perch is great as he can play in lots of different positions and is improving all the time.
Even Obertan offers you something different. Incredible pace against a tiring defence.

  • 17 bassongs_of_praise // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:41 AM

@14 i dont really care what he does in the final third, defensively he is a liability. He backs off his man and lets players get shots and crosses in virtually unopposed and his positioning is awful – I would hazard a guess that at least 75% of the goals we concede are linked to him in some way.

The goal line clearances just paper over the cracks – its pure luck and the fact he stands on a post for corners means he is likely to be clearing the ball off the line than most of the other players.

Other than that I think one of his main problems is he thinks he is better than he is – that is proven by the fact that he hasnt snapped the clubs hands off when offered a 5 year deal – if he thinks he can do better than what he currently has at NUFC then good luck to him as I think he will be in for a shock.

  • 18 Toon_Tom // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:45 AM

Mr T will prevent Gerrard from bossing the midfield.

A hard (but slightly fair) challenge on him in the first few minutes will set the pace for the game and scare the $hit out of Gerrard!

  • 19 martoon // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:46 AM

geof777 @14 – Totally agree all this Simpson bashing is ridiculous. Granted he is not the best attacking fullback but he is a solid defender and we’ve plenty of other attacking players – somebody has to stay back!
bollance @12 – I think Bellers has dodgy knees (like Ledley King) and can only play every so often. Lets hope they are extra dodgy this Sunday.

  • 20 Toon_Tom // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:47 AM

martoon – Ba has a dodgy knee, but this doesnt prevent him from doing the business ;)

  • 21 nightfa11 // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:49 AM

i just hope our defense will hold.. liverpool bought average players for millions.. downing is a poor player..adam…carroll..jose is replacable cos of his position..etc.. only threats are suarez & bellamy…like i said..i just hope our defense will hold..cos well..i dont trust perch as CB..can be shakey…but he is growing on confidence..so he might do his job…but as for wiliamson..without colo hes a championship player..no more)

really impressed with our scouting network btw..i mean really..so..let we buy another ba, cabaye, santon, tiote, etc..& let those rich clubs spend millions on downings & youngs (:D…some will say his stats are great..he made those assist in 4 matches, but was terrible in other 20 matches..cant cross…200 balls over the goal & 10 assist..& thats only cos they have rooney..)

  • 22 catchy in norway // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:51 AM

    geoff777 // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:39

sorry geoff, but those players i mentioned, if those played for any other team in the prem and we where linked with them you would be gutted, i think you have your biased head on cos they play for us,,,

i used to think anyone in our black and white shirt was great, but if we want to improve, we have to stop thinking this way and see what they offer us as a team, and they dont offer a lot,

willamson and simpson are liabilities and only know how to hooofff the ball, and that is not good enough for any team trying to be in the top 6 year after year, which i hope we are

  • 23 check the toastie // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:56 AM

I agree with Bassong, Simson is not very good, and this goaline clearance rubbish that supposed to point to him being a gud defender is twaddle. Simpson is gud at nothing but giving 100% but hes supposed to do that, personally will play most his career in the championship once he leaves here, this is as gud as it gets for him so he should enjoy it whilst it lasts. See you later Simmo, gon in the summer,

  • 24 bassongs_of_praise // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:59 AM

@check the toastie – spot on mate. Id have him as backup but that is all. Need to buy a top class LB and switch Santon to right back.

Williamson seems to be getting put in the same bracket as Simpson which I think is harsh. Couple of mistakes recently but lets not forget he is only playing because Taylor is injured and we didnt get anyone else in. Decent enough 3rd or 4th choice centre half.

  • 25 Munster Mag // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Simpson really shoukld be kept. Defensively he is generally very secure. he’s quick, likes to tackle and has helped us a lot by clearing off the line etc. Meanwhile , this is waht our old mate Lawro has been saying ….the cheeky git …

These thoughts are also echoed by Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson who is suggesting that Liverpool would be better served next season by getting in Newcastle’s Demba Ba than stick around with Carroll.

Lawrenson said in The Mirror, “With Steven Gerrard released to get forward, if they can bring in a top goalscorer to play alongside (and occasionally instead of) Luis Suarez, they’ll have plenty of options, and look a different team.

Whether they have the money to do that is a different story.

But if not, then they might have to go to Newcastle and offer them Andy Carroll plus some cash for Demba Ba.”

  • 26 bassongs_of_praise // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:10 PM

@Munster Mag – think we must be watching a different player if you think Simpson is defensively secure.

In terms of Carroll plus money for Ba – think id take that myself.

  • 27 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Carroll + Cash for Demba ba? – No. I’d rather play Obertan as a lone striker then have that fat judas back in our team.

I agree with you Munster. Simpson has been a big player for us this season. He must be leading the charts with goal line clearences.

  • 28 Toonbyblood // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Swap deal with Villa for Habib Beye?

Would be interesting. He was great when he was with us. I remember people on here talking about him being a future captain.

But he’s disappeared since he left to Villa. Prolly thinks was worst decision ever.

I don’t mind Danny though. But I can’t see him getting much better than he is at moment. He doesn’t excite me like Santon, but then I think he’s a little more solid that Santon defensively just now. Santon will improve though!

  • 29 Toonbyblood // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Munster – Liverpool would be better served by our entire midfield and strike force – and steve G…

  • 30 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:23 PM

    @28

Beye wouldnt fit Ashley’s policy. He is over 30 years old isn’t he?

  • 31 Toonbyblood // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:29 PM

yeah you’re right Perch… didn’t think of that.

Anyway if reports are to be believed Erik Peters will be here and there’ll comp for places.

That will be good to see.

  • 32 Indian Magpie // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:31 PM

I think we should go for

    Younes Belhanda

    i know i said i was not going 2 post but :)

  • 33 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:32 PM

Going to be a great game against Liverpool. Hatem Ben Arfa taking on Enrique. Love him or hate him, he together with Suarez(if not for the racist incident) is a contender for Liverpool player of the season.

Enrique has been outstanding in most of his games this season for them. But he does his usual showboating and did give the ball away in crucial area about 3 to 4 times over the course of this season and 1 which resulted in a goal. Can’t remember against who though.

He’s still 1 of the best attacking full backs in the world(he did an amazing run towards the end of the Wigan game getting right into the byline beating about 4 players). Contest beween him and Arfa would be interesting.

And Simpson will have to be on the top of his game to stop Enrique’s marauding runs. He’s the only player i still wish he never left.

  • 34 markmac // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:41 PM

@30 he’s well over 30 now, playing at a championship club or lower i think, he was a good player when we signed him, infact i remember being at st james’s for the wigan game the day after we signed him and he was introduced to the fans

  • 35 Dannyo // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:47 PM

We won’t loan anyone if it’s not with the view to buy, might aswell accept it.
As for half decent cover, there’s only Kadar really.
U have Henderson aswell, but it’s not an ideal sitation.
Collo, Saylor, Tav and Streete are all injured currently.
We’re left with Kadar and Hendo as backup, with Perch and Willo the only first team players.

I fear Liverpool might actually be low life enough to try and activly injury either Perch or Willo, to have a hope of climbing the table in the long run. Atleast get us to lose as much as possible.

  • 36 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:51 PM

We should go after Dirk Marcellis

Young CB, but can play anywhere in the back 4. Only 23 years old.

  • 37 Rotonda heights // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Sorry Geoff but I do want defenders that get forward, ie total football

Yes a couple of goal line clearances but equally several cock ups like when he ran in front of krul on Liverpool’s free kick and he’s also deflected in a few o.g.s when he’s fatally backed off and turned his back.

Santon or Tav then Pieters or someone else left back.

  • 38 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Mar 28, 2012 at 12:54 PM

It is funny how people can have completely different opinions about players such as Danny Simpson. I wonder if this happens with the coaches & manager?
I can imagine Pardew saying I think he is a good player let’s sign him and Graham Carr saying no he is pants do not sign Obertan :)

  • 43 Jonny // Mar 28, 2012 at 2:19 PM

@40 i would rather see Santon in there just to add a bit more pace and like to see Cabaye in a more advanced role:

    Simpson————–Perch————-Williamson————Santon

    ————————Tiote—————-Jonas————————

  • 44 Munster Mag // Mar 28, 2012 at 3:02 PM

I stand by what i said re Simmo. He’s a good , straightforward defender, and not that many wingers give him a hard time, at all. Re Santon, i’ve said from day one that he looks weak one on one against wingers, but hopefully that will chance. However, just cos Colo and Enrique improved, doesnt mean that he will. He’s a fine athlete though, perhaps better at right back? Can anyone tell me if he has ever actually played right back ? Tks

  • 45 toonincheek // Mar 28, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Simmos problem may be his lack of versatility.

Ideal situation (barring a top class specialist reserve for each position, and that leads to other problems anyway) is to have a number of versatile palyers like Raylor, Perch and Guthrie, who can fill in when the first choice is injured/suspended, or when a particular game demands a different formation.

No complaints about Simmos performances, but we Toon supporters always want something better.
And it would be good to have more play ns on the right.

Although if Simmo concentrates on defence, leaving HBA to concentrate more on tearing the opposition aprt, who can complain?

  • 46 geordiejamie89 // Mar 28, 2012 at 4:17 PM

I think Santon should move across to RB next season, with Erik Pieters at LB. However Simpson has cleared off the line plenty this season, and been part of the team doing so well, so it should be up to him, he can sign but as a squad player, not week in week out.

  • 47 out of toon // Mar 28, 2012 at 4:18 PM

simmo causes as many problems as he fixes – too many loose passes and bizarre decisions…
i think previous posts have it – buy a top quality left back and switch the santon to the right. he has a great right foot.

Any reason why we aren’t playing two out and out strikers (ba cisse) and float HBA behind them (i know having Ba and HBA out the flanks seems to work, but i think it’d be a fearful strikeforce for most prem league defences to deal with)??????

  • 48 9 // Mar 28, 2012 at 6:27 PM

Interesting how divided opinion is on Simpson. Take a look at the facts: we’re 6th in the Premier League, and he’s ever-present. Until Steve Taylor got injured we had the best defensive record in the League (Simpson ever-present in defence). We went 14 games undefeated- Simpson ever-present. One thing everybody does agree on, he’s not star material. Fair comment, consider what he cost, what he’s worth, how much pay he gets, and you want star material too? This is simply unrealistic. Every single successful team has non-star, solid, dependable, team players – we have 2 or 3 and he’s one of them.

He obviously thinks he’s worth more than he’s being offered. He will lose out if he tries playing hard ball with our owner. Consequently, he’ll either see sense or we’ll lose him. I ain’t clever enough to call that one – how many better offers will he get, is the only clue I have on that one.

Supposing the young lad can’t get over the idea he’s worth a lot more than he’s being offered, that gives us a big problem – we need to replace an ever-present with somebody at least as good. This could become expensive – just look at the names mentioned and transfer fees plus wages. We do have an excellent young, promising, reserve, but Simpson gets picked ahead of him every single match.

Despite the many contrary opinions, I don’t think it’s rocket science to conclude the lad does a job for us,(I haven’t even mentioned goal-line clearances – they could EASILY be the reason we get European football next season).

  • 49 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 28, 2012 at 6:49 PM

I can’t wait for us to get rid of Simpson and Williamson. They have cost us too many points this season and offer nothing to the team. However, James Perch has been performing extremely well recently and probably deserves to remain on tyneside. Our ideal defnsive signings for the summer will be:

    Vertonghen
    Mbiwa
    Cissokho
    Clyne

It might be difficult to capture Vertonghen unless we qualify for the champions league. If we beat Liverpool on Sunday, we’ll have a good chance of getting 4th place. Swansea away will be tough though.

  • 50 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 28, 2012 at 7:19 PM

We’re going to be immense next season, providing we sign a bunch of bargains like last summer. Recommended signings would be:

    Hoilett – Free
    Diame – Free
    Rodriguez – Free
    Barnetta – Free
    Marvin Martin – £9m
    Giroud – £12m
    Courgnet – £4.5m
    Cissokho – £7m
    Mbiwa – £5m
    Vertonghen – £9m
    Clyne – Free

    Total = £41.5m

We’ll probably sell Tiote for £25m so:

    Net spend = £16.5m

    It’s possible.

  • 51 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 28, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Giroud is still a possibility. Most P.L teams have 3/4 quality strikers.

  • 52 martoon // Mar 28, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Ketsbaia9 – I think you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think we will/can sign all those players. Yes the net spend is feasable but imagine the increase in wages which is what appears in the profit/loss accounts.

  • 53 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 28, 2012 at 9:21 PM

Getting rid of players like Smith etc will make the above transfers feasible. All the above players will be interested in signing for us. We might not sign them all, but I’ll guarantee that we’ll snap up at least 4 of them.

  • 54 9 // Mar 28, 2012 at 10:04 PM

“I’ll guarantee that we’ll snap up at least 4 of them”

No problem working out Ketsbaia9′s grasp of reality, then. Results in the transfer market by the end of August will be all he needs to prove his point…………. worth checking out on 1st Sept?

    That’s what I thought, too.

  • 55 davis_toons // Mar 28, 2012 at 11:00 PM

C’mon Danny get signed up … you don’t want to end up at Blackburn or Villa do you?

I see Danny as a Blackburn player. Swap Hoilett – Free
Diame – Free plus some cash

  • 56 davis_toons // Mar 29, 2012 at 2:19 AM

“He is decent but IMO we should look to upgrade in the summer.”

These are words that positive fans would like to think. I totally agree. Unless we cant find any in the market.

Remb every club is a building team in the premier league.

If you dont upgrade you will be replace. We got to keep on doing what we are doing. Buying good young player add 1 or 2 first team players. Sell backup players with e upgrade.

  • 57 Marcelinho_Bramble // Mar 29, 2012 at 3:08 AM

Simpson is an OKKAY player, a player who consistently gave 5/10 every single match. Not great but not suck either

wish he could learn from Kyle Walker – both attacking and defending

  • 58 HKTP // Mar 29, 2012 at 3:26 PM

Simpson struggled with Jerome Thomas last week. Actually he struggles with the majority of wingers, I’ve yet to see him have any decent wingers in his back pocket all game. His saving grace is his pace, Colo and S. Taylor has bailed him out on numerous occasions too.
He can’t defend at all, his positional sense is terrible, he can’t attack and his decision making is poor. While a lot of you go on that he was part of the best defence at the start of the season, he didn’t really do that much to be honest. In all the games I’ve watched, he has looked a liability rather than an asset. We need to move onto the next level and Simpson isn’t going to help us do that.
Williamson and Simpson should be sold.
