Williamson And Perch To Step Up To The Plate

7:22 pm, Thursday, March 29th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 96 Comments

Newcastle captain Coloccini is out for the next two games with a hamstring problem.

Mike Williamson – we can cope without Fabricio

With Steven Taylor also being out with an Achilles problem for the rest of the season,  Newcastle do not any specialist center-backs to come in, and it will be James Perch who will do the duties next to big Mike Williamson in Sunday’s game  against Liverpool.

And James has been in really good form this year for Newcastle, and the 26 year-old has shown when he has a specialist center-back alongside him, he can do a good job in the center of the Newcastle defense.

Mike Williamson will also need to step up to the plate on Sunday, and he was interviewed on the Newcastle web-site today:

“It’s a big loss.” “Colo been huge for us this season. He’s not only our captain, but also a fantastic player.” “But the second half at West Brom showed that we have enough in the squad to cope without him while he is out.”

“Perchy came into the middle and he has been one of our best players in recent weeks.” “He proved again that he can step in, be it at left-back, centre-half or wherever, and do a brilliant job.”

“Liverpool have the likes of  Suarez, Carroll, Downing and many others who can hurt you. They have some fantastic players.” “It will be tough but hopefully if we can apply ourselves like we did last weekend at West Brom, then it can be a good game.”

“We are carrying some momentum at the moment and have got a huge chance against Liverpool.” “There is a great buzz about the place at the moment. We are a hard-working group of lads with a good mentality.”

“And obviously off the back of two good wins, we are looking forward to the big game on Sunday.”

Mike had a good game on Sunday but he was at fault for the West Brom goal,  when in doubt kick it out is a good way of dealing with those situations.

Here’s Mike’s interview after the West Brom game with a certain Hatem Ben Arfa, who seems very happy with things and was the Man of the Match at The Hawthorns, and Mike also tries to explain the dodgy goal we conceded.

With being short of specialist center-backs this season,  Newcastle must buy at least one center-back in the summer, with the possibility of that being 6’4″ Douglas of  Dutch club FC Twente.

The 24 year-old Brazilian is a free agent in the summer, and Newcastle are specialists at picking up top players out of contract, but Newcastle will still face some severe competition from other clubs.

The Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge has now been rearranged for Wednesday May 2nd, and we will have 12 days after our home game against Bolton Wanderers  on Easter Monday, 9th April,  before we take on Stoke City at home on the 21st April.

Following the Chelsea game, we have Manchester City on the following Sunday at home, and those are the only two games we have against sides above us in the league table during the run-in to the season.

Both games are within five days of each other – two wins?

Comments welcome.

He said the second half in the last game showed we can cope. We lost the second half 1-0, so probably not the best example.

He said that we showed in the 2nd half we can cope. Does he mean after he got punched in the head from Krul after messing up an easy defensive manoeuvre?

Mike Terrifies me, he is an accident waiting to happen and i hope it isnt sunday, think we might go a bit longer than last week as Ba and Cisse may get more joy against scumpools back 4 not the biggest, this may mean we lack a bit of possession but at the same time means Mike and simo dont have to take a chance trying to play football. We will be nice and compact not allowing the game to stretch, might be a suprising 1-0, pardew would be a miracle worker if we clean sheet on sunday.

This is one game were i dont giv a sh1t about performance it is truly all about the result.

I think this is the game where Mike either attaches his own ‘for sale’ sign around his neck or he shuts up the doubters and makes a case for his long term future at our club!

This match will see the spotlight fall upon big mike and his side parting and I just hope that like Perch he stands up to be counted.

Im more than happy for Willo and to a lesser extent Simmo just launching the ball long rather than trying to play proper football, at least its safer as with the ball at his feet Im literally screaming at him to get rid of it!!!

That moment when he hasnt got a pass on and you can see his brain trying to work out what to do with it as the forwards are closing him down…..JUST GET RID OF IT MAN PLLLLEEEAASSEEE!!!!!

  • 13 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Therein lies the necessity to have a comfortable ball playing defenders at CB and RB.

I watched the United match on Monday and the way Evra and Rafael play the ball out from the back is just beautiful watch at times, I long for the day that I can watch our entire back four being able to play the ball out with ease.

  • 14 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:08 PM

“a comfortable ball playing defenders…” I have an excellent grasp of the plural and singular syntax don’t I? Oh dear.

  • 15 Marty-Toon // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Think we can do one over on the fools and we will be laughing lads.
Was supposed to go to the game but flights from Norway were gettin expensive haven to fly to holland and up or to London and up.
Bloody expensive with game tickets on top of hotel also.
My brother and some buddies from Ireland are goin clothed in the horrible red jerseys, hope they’re sent home with their tails between their legs lol

  • 16 Klatoon // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:14 PM

An expansive passing game owes alot to technical fullbacks who are comfortable in possession and ball retention.

They guarantee the CM’s passing options even when the forwards are being marked. We have this in Santon but he’s restricted by being on the wrong side.

Now if Jose Enrique was still here and Santon was RB,we’d be a real joy to watch.

    Comfortable with their balls? Lol
Danny alves anyone, actually and Spanish top league full backs are comfortable on the ball but they do like to fall over and can be poor defensively.
Jose was different of course but not included in the Spanish team at that

  • 20 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Klatoon Santon is not being played on the wrong side. He is a right footed LB, not a RB. He has played RB but his preferred position is LB. Is Enrique was still here, Santon would not be.

Slow night for banter. Anyone else watching this Schalke vs Athletic Bilbao game? Bilbao look a shadow of the side that beat United a few weeks ago, apparently they have fallen away in La Liga, so much so that they won’t even be looking at a Europa League place next season! And Liverpool will be. Madness!

  • 28 geordiejamie89 // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:51 PM

  • 30 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Bound to have short odds on a Schalke win though because they have been absolutely all over Bilbao this first half it is untrue. Bilbao can be dangerous on the counter but aside from that do not look capable of stringing a decent sequence of passes together. Gunning for a couple of Schalke goals this half.

Farfan is tidy as lads, I fear clubs with much higher wage capabilities are looking at him though.

Llorente is just a class act though. It is a pity that these Bilbao guys are like married to their clubs because there are some fantastic players in that side.

    Athletic have been poor though.

stuart no9 // Mar 29, 2012 at 4:37 PM – Ba is only doing what a lot of other players do when they sign for us. They use us as a stepping stone to greater things.

    Really?

And who in recent years has used us a ‘stepping stone to greater things’ …

Given? N’Zogbia? Bassong? Martins? Beye? Owen? Duff? Barton? Nolan? Carroll? Enrique?

The only one I can think of is Milner … but then the a couple of domestic cups, whilst more than we have won, is hardly greater things on the scale of a Prem title (yet) or A Champs Lge.

More backhanded digs at Ashley from the blinkered delusional doom monger Stuart09.

  • 43 dazza // Mar 29, 2012 at 9:46 PM

“great buzz about the place” = disappointing performance and a Loss

  • 44 Klatoon // Mar 29, 2012 at 9:47 PM

Yeah yeah Santon is a LB but it wouldnt hurt playing him on his natural side @ RB, he’d have more options and cross more.

Besides isnt thats why we’r looking at Pieters and other LB’s, because AP sees him as the long term RB?

  • 45 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 9:51 PM

    @Bills-son

Well we all know that we are not a “selling club” or a “feeder club” or a “conveyor belt” for the bigger teams as you have quite rightly said, even with Milner we only sold him because he never wanted to be here and we got good money for him. He went on and improved as a player over the next few years at Villa and was then snapped up by City, c’est la vie.

Any fan who believes that we are merely a stepping stone for players with bigger ambitions are, perhaps not delusional, just misguided and somewhat sceptical of the owner’s long term ambitions. What I would say to them is to wait and see before making such damning statements without any real evidence to point to their conclusions.

And finally, let’s all smile eh? Things are looking up and we need as much positive energy emanating from every conceivable orifice with the biggest game of the season, nay, the last few years, coming up!! :D :D

  • 46 MagPieMan // Mar 29, 2012 at 9:51 PM

  • 52 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 10:13 PM

What I had meant was that after Llorente’s second goal Di Marcos and Muniain were excellent, Bilbao played a more expansive passing game that they played against United for 90mins in the two legs and that brought those two into the game. Up until the 72nd minute they were fairly poor.

Perhaps it is overselling to say they were “excellent” if they only played well for 18 mins… :P haha

  • 55 MagpiesFlyHigh // Mar 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM

    GHOSD / Bill-son

The reason this big club, little club, selling club stuff comes up is because we have underachieved over five decades and so Toon fans can be a little insecure and have a bit of an inferiority complex.
Most of the players who have moved on have had lots of reasons – many of which had to do with money. Milner got a good slagging off when he went – no final ball etc., etc., but he has improved as a player and is in a £250m team so maybe some reasons for moving on are glory hunting. Enrique will get European football next season even if the bindippers are well past their heyday.

i think willo needs to just chill. he can look solid then make a.slip up which shatters his confidence and he panics for the rest of the game.
and on beattie he makes an idiot of himself more often than not but can sometimes have a good conversation an be funny. this he will rise thing falls squarely in idiot territory though lol

  • 59 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 10:24 PM

I would never have accused NUFC supporters as having an inferiority complex! haha I would have argued that while we were in decline we always thought we were a big club while in reality we were an ageing, over-priced, over-hyped team of prima donnas.

Now we are creating a good side perhaps we have developed an over cautious approach because we are fearful of change. Any change that has happened in the club over the past decade has only begotten misfortune and we what we want is stability, which is why we lamented the selling of Nolan, Enrique, Barton, the sacking of Hughton etc. However, any change that has occurred in the past 18months has only been good so perhaps change is a good thing.

Finally, if there has only been one player who moved forward in their careers out of all the players we have sold under Mike Ashley’s tenure than surely that indicates that Ashley/Pards has only advocated the selling of players if they are of no use to the future of the club.

Hate to say us but id be amazed if we got anything out of this one. We always have a massive inferiority complex against top teams and williamson is a walking disaster. Just whach him get too close to suarez, turned and buried. He will try to mark carrol where possible of course, and could do a decent job in that respect, but just whach them switch it up and suarez move onto willo. Clubs know he is our weak link. Even hba who is now showing top form and fitness (credit to perdew) might struggle against a pumped enrique who he will not be able to outpace or outmuscle. Really hope im wrong. Suppose if cheik plays in cm we might stand half a chance. If not stevie g will run the show as usual.

Liverpool are a team on the descent. they are already qualified for Europe and know they won’t qualify for the champs league. they’ve nothing to play for. they habeas a team full of individuals who cost too much and have gelled. their manager is an overrated fossil.
we have krul to deny almost any shot. willo to deny Carroll a header. perch to snap the racist. tote to keep Gerrard quiet. we’ve a better midfield and a scary front 3 who look like they’d terrify any defense.
Liverpool have injuries to key players. bellamy would have been their biggest threat. we can win this boys. let us believe.

  • 75 GHOSD (The poster formerly known as Ruddy Marveaux-lous) // Mar 29, 2012 at 10:52 PM

Right lads we know that if we are to win then our defence has to keep tight without Colo and our front 2/3, whatever the case may be (hoping for a 4-3-3 but think 4-4-2 is what we will be going for), play like they did against West Brom.

Can this realistically happen? Well of course it can. Our midfield is better than theirs by a stretch, so we can wrestle control of this game and make them chase it. It is a matter of then scoring first and owning the game. It may sound simple, because it is! :D

  • 84 spitfire_ // Mar 29, 2012 at 11:55 PM

    @ 82

I’m chill… but just remember what happend last time when Perchy played central back against the team which cross the ball all the time (Norwich away). Alongside is Willo… I don’t trust this guy. The Losers cross the ball all the time… and they have a tall striker which name I wouldn’t say who can jump.

    Beddersmag @ # 66

Your last sentence was spot on and was the only thing worth reading pity I had to wade through that dross to get to it.

As for “We always have a massive inferiority complex against top teams” try telling manure that after the Jan game where we totally dominated them for 90 mins and sent them home losers.

Apart from falling apart in the spuds game I think we have held our own against the teams above us.

Have to admit, I’d have more confidence with Colo instead. Our second half defensive display was, in part, in spite of Williamson, not because of him. And this scenario pits Perchy against Suarez, not Grant Holt or Shane Long.

“Newcastle are specialists at picking up top players out of contract”.
    True, Ed.
Sometimes I wonder whether we got it wrong and Mashley and Llambiarse are really Bindippers, and not Cockneys at all.

If only we could really really hammer Liverfool. Then that would probably raise questions over king kenny, that would be mint. Hope the toon do the job this weekend, i’ve never had such high hopes of toon till now.

Williamson’s quote ” we can cope without Colo” really strikes fear in to me as those words could seriously come back to haunt us.

Williamson hasn’t put his hands up for any of his costly mistakes and instead of showing a bit of humility he keeps coming up with these stupid bravado statements.

That headline should read Williamson and Perch NEED to step up to the plate. If I was Carroll and Suarez, I would be licking my lips, so I think our only hope is attack, attack, attack!

I’d be feeling a lot better if Willo had of said we struggled in the second half, but we’ll have all week to work on it,the fact that he thinks he coped well is very worrying, that deflection could have gone anywhere,an own goal and an assisted own goal wouldn’t have made pretty viewing.

We will need to score 3 or more to win this, but we have the tools to do it.

My bet is a 3-2 either way!

  • 91 magpie6699 // Mar 30, 2012 at 8:45 AM

Is it true Bellamy’s not fit? At least that would only leave Suarez, Carrol, Kuyt, Gerrard – ohhh, never mind!

  • 92 magpie6699 // Mar 30, 2012 at 8:46 AM

Benton – are you calling the Dembas tools?

  • 93 Jail for Ashley // Mar 30, 2012 at 8:50 AM

    Magpie,
Sounds canny that line up you said,I wonder what other teams think when they see Ba,Cisse,HBA and Cabaye are on the team sheet.

  • 94 Rotonda heights // Mar 30, 2012 at 8:59 AM

    jail

I’ve always thought we should make other teams worry more about us than the other way round. That front 3 will hopefully mask the deficiencies of Williamson, Simpson and an albeit improving Perch.
