Chelsea Draw 1-1 With Fulham – Newcastle Remain 5th Top

10:10 pm, Monday, April 9th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 50 Comments

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Fulham in tonight’s late game, and are now on 57 points, and two points behind Newcastle,  who are in 5th place on 59 points and level with Spurs in 4th place.

Frank Lampard – scored Chelsea goal with dubious penalty

Of course 5th gets automatic entry to the Europa League.

Chelsea were so lucky to beat Wigan on 2-1 on Saturday, when their winner came in the third minute of stoppage time,  and both their goals were shown to be offside by TV replays, the first goal being well offside.

And tonight they got a dodgy penalty decision in their favor, when referee  Mark Clattenburg adjudged Murphy to have fouled Kalou just before half time, a nice time to get a goal.

But there was minimum contact, and the Fulham players were rightly incensed with the decision.

And in the game at White Hart Lane today Norwich had a stone cold penalty turned down, but they still went on to beat Spurs 2-1.

With Manchester United getting QPR’s Shaun Derry sent off yesterday, after only 14 minutes, for what looked like a dive by Ashley Young.

Young was even offside before the foul occurred so that shoudn’t have counted you have the feeling that the top sides are getting some very dubious calls in their favor.

But Fulham came back tonight in the second half, and a Clint Dempsey header after 82 minutes evened up the scores,  and Chelsea this time were not able to get a stoppage time winner,  by fair means or foul.

And so with Newcastle’s great 2-1 win over Bolton this afternoon, the Magpies stay  in 5th position in the league, and are only below Spurs on goal difference,  with Chelsea 2 points behind in 6th place.

It’s been quite a day for Newcastle,  and in our last five games, which have all ended in wins, we have gained 8 points on Spurs and 7 points on Chelsea in that time.

We need to keep our winning ways going, and we could even get an automatic spot into Europe next season,  in either the Europa League for 5th position or the Champions League for 4th position.

Sounds good to us – and all we have to do is keep winning.

Comments welcome.

definetly ours to lose after looking at chelseas fixtures so many games

  • 7 tiotal football // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:19 PM

I’m praying for a draw on Sunday so that spurs and chelsea have another game to add to their schedules

But it all comes down to our final three games. All we need now is for city to lose the title soon and have nothing to play for when they pay us a visit and for everton to reach the FA cup final so Moyes rests players for the final game of the season. That way we’ll have the edge on both as we’ll have the desire to go on and get 4th whilst they just look to play 90 minutes of football. Yes, there’s the risk that if everton get to the final and we finish 6th then we lose out on the Europa league.

  • 8 Birts // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:19 PM

We need to look at getting fergie in at left back Santon over to the right then we have the pace for to play the 433 and have the pace from the full backs to widen the game up

  • 9 Oleg G // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:20 PM

I don’t know about Man C, as they are scary sometimes, but we can take Chelsea, defo. They have such difficult games, they will be tired, weak.

  • 10 tiotal football // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:20 PM

    that should’ve finished with

but I’d rather risk it for the CL. 6th is a massive success with or without Europe and the CL would be like another cake on top of the top, let alone the icing!

  • 11 jimmyxavi // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:20 PM

I thought we won 2-0 Ed?? Haha

  • 12 ady // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:21 PM

after watched aresnal yesterday they played gr8 football but i still think there is alot much left in the last 5 games chelsea are very very lucky there luck is riding with them they should have lost the last game and they should have lost today refs are helping them refs gave them 4 points in last 2 games :(
newcastle can finish top 3 i think if we win rest of the games but it wont be easy i think we will lose at least cant afford to lose against chelsea tho

  • 13 Graeme // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:31 PM

We are now TWO POINTS off THIRD PLACE!!!! Just how silly can this season get?? What a set of results in general but what an awesome win by TOOOOON today inspired by BenArfa – Whats he worth in todays market now?? Superb buy for TOOOON.

If we can keep this up, we actually could finish in THIRD PLACE!! Whisper it chaps, you never know who is listening – wont be the bindippers though, they are miles behind, sorry Jose, Andy honest pmsl

I went to the doctor to ask his advice on quitting smoking.”It’s really difficult trying to stop,” I said. “I’m constantly reminded about cigarettes with my job.”"But you’re the Ringmaster at the circus aren’t you?” replied the doctor.”That’s right. And all day long I’m shouting Roll up! Roll up!”

  • 15 Yorkie Dave // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:38 PM

I have a feeling that everton will win the FA Cup.We will get fourth place and chelsea will end up sixth with sweet FA!

after the next game I think we will be fourth as spurs have a battle away to qpr who are due a result and chelsea will lose to arsenal.

then the game after we play wigan spurs have blackburn and chelsea have qpr. all three are difficult and could end with dropped points.

  • 16 Yorkie Dave // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:39 PM

    we are on MOTD now

  • 17 Robby Bobson // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:40 PM

    Harry Redknapp on MOTD…

“We cant play 442, we cant play with 4 forwards because we havent got the forwards who will get back into position”

and he wants to be england manager! Pardew has proven with Hatem it can be done

  • 18 pizzicatochan // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Couldn’t imagine that Chelski blew it in our way, which is a good surprise.

  • 19 pizzicatochan // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:53 PM

And Chelski has to play us, Spuds, Arses and Barca? My…

  • 20 p // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:55 PM

things are certainly tense who knows how things will turn out. However, if we keep winning, we will be in good shape.

But we won’t finish lower than 6th and that is a phenomenal achievement – we have been help by Liverpool appointing a crap manager though.

  • 21 ToonAndy // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Imagine some of the names we could attract if we finish in 4th and qualify for champions league… I’d love to see this next season …

Do I need to clean my lugs out, or were both Hansen and Lawro plentiful in their complimentary of us? Suppose we’re kind of forcing their hand at this stage, mind. :P

  • 23 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Jesus MOTD or any media tbf just cant give us credit, they cant quiet admit that we are there pushing all the way for the CL spot and truth be told between us chelski n spuds were the ones who look most up for it!

  • 24 WWJBD // Apr 9, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Is it time to sing we are champions league yet? Getting scarily close to that. And Pards must be manager of the year/season/league/country/europe and quite possibly world right now

Oh and player of the season award is going to be a laugh just give it to the squad cos good god they all have a hand on that crown for me

  • 25 DoctorZelig // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:02 PM

Looking at the 4 fixtures that nufc90 gave us in post 4, im not sure ours isn’t the best…

Chelski has the CL to focus on and still tough EPL games.

Spuds has 2 relegatin battlers and Chelsea.

Arsenal… I do not think we need to go for third place, even though it would be fracking cool!

NUFC: City has nothing left to play for, same goes for Stoke and Everton. Chelsea will be focusing on Barca and then there is Wigan who we are just better then…

  • 30 soundoid // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:07 PM

Everton have everything to play for finishing above Liverpool. Stoke is a Pulis team they will keep plodding on Lot of pride at Stoke. Now Man City is a different matter.

No its how he manages to look at brian ruiz everyday

  • 35 geordiejamie89 // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:15 PM

I hope Newcastle get fourth. We deserve it. Draw with Man utd at old Trafford, beat them 3-0 at home. Beat Liverpool, beat Sunderland. In fact Chelsea and Man City are the only teams that look capable of doing the double on us. We’ve been told all season that we had no chance by pundits, and I think it’s disrespectful, and I hope we get the job done. It’ll put the big spenders to shame if we get fourth.

  • 36 Wor Shearer // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:16 PM

btw, that 95th min Vermaelen winner against us has cost us 3rd place!

    Just kidding (I think?).

    So happy atm! Howay!

  • 37 JAMSHA // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:17 PM

  • 39 MagpiesFlyHigh // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:18 PM

IF we turn it on the last three games we will finish CL. no doubt.

Nice to see the scum going down so easy

A man goes to the doctors. “I think I’m a Tyrannosaurus Rex” he says.”Hmm,” says the Doc. “Open wide and say ‘Ahh’, please.”The man opens his mouth as wide as he can and says “Raaaaar!”"Good, good. Now stand and touch your toes.” says the Doc.”Are you taking the p!ss” says the man. “With these arms?”

  • 46 stk85 // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:33 PM

    exciting times in toon land!

i think it’s ours for the taking, esp if we can get a result at chelsea.

if however, we don’t 6th is still great and should mean euroball next season

if we dont there are two things:
chelsea being gifted 4 pts in last two games
our inability to keep 5the ball in the corner at the emirates

  • 47 Sazzer // Apr 9, 2012 at 11:38 PM

nufc90 great! Looks like Arsenal, and Tottenham have everything to lose, and Newcastle and Chelsea have everything to win.

  • 48 Cool Hand Luke // Apr 10, 2012 at 12:19 AM

excellent, so as long as we dont lose the next game we stay 5th, and have a chance to go 4th if spurs and chelski draw and we win.

  • 49 Korzic // Apr 10, 2012 at 1:26 AM

City are awful away from home atm. Combine that with the title race being over means that fixture shouldn’t be as hard as it could be.

  • 50 BillBurch // Apr 10, 2012 at 8:45 AM

I know the MOD pundits have been biased in the past but I watched it last night and I think they were complimentary about NUFC. Criticising Bolton’s defence for not stopping HBA to me is praising HBA’s skills.
