Newcastle Again Linked With 22 Year-Old Striker

10:22 am, Thursday, April 12th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 37 Comments

About a week ago,  we reported that Newcastle were interested in Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez

Jay Rodriguez – Newcastle linked with 22 year-old striker

And there is new news on the Newcastle interest over the last day or two, but we’re not sure whether this is just a rehash of last week’s news,  and it could be.

Newcastle are quite well off for strikers at the moment with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse two of the best strikers in the Premier League and 26 league  goals between them this season.

But we have to hope we can hold onto the two of them this summer, although that will be made easier if Newcastle qualify for Europe,  and especially true if we qualify for the European Champions League, which would be phenomenal and way ahead of schedule.

But Demba Ba has that £7M release clause in his contract,  and we are hoping that can be taken out and that he will sign a new contract at Newcastle, but no new news on that one.

And there are rumors Newcastle may sell Leon Best this summer, and certainly it seems plausible that Newcastle would want to bring in a young striker.

We’ve been linked with John Guidetti the 19 year Manchester City Swedish striker, currently on loan at Feyenoord, and also with Huddersfield Town 22 year-old striker Jordan Rhodes.

And last week we were linked with Jay Rodriguez of Burnley, whose father is Spanish.

The news today doesn’t appear to be an update on the original story, and Burnley Manager Eddie Howe has said that Jay could be made available this summer.

Southampton are said to also be interested, and we have to wonder if this lad is good enough for Newcastle?

Jay can score the goals and he has 21 in 41 appearances for his home town club Burnley this season,  and he scored 15 in 48 appearances last season.

This story could be true,  that Newcastle are indeed interested,  but we wonder if he’s good enough to get in the Newcastle first team in a year or so?

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I don’t think we are going to sign Pieters or any LB. Pieters is not as good as Chissoko imo, especially when he played vs England, he got beaten too easily.
We definitely need RB, I think Simpson will stay, but he can’t start in all the games like this season especially if we want to chalenge all cups. Tav maybe good, but he is unproven quality. Santon and Raylor will play LB with Fergie as backup. Perch can also play both LB and RB, but he will be used mostly as DM.

  • 2 redondo77 // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:27 AM

too many players who can play as LB right now.

  • 3 Tsunki // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:33 AM

Are we really? Yawn. And who says Besty is off this summer?

  • 4 Pardew's fist pump // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:35 AM

Please quit stating Ba ‘has a release clause’, it’s pure speculation and given the silence and lack of activity in relation to the purported clause, from NUFC, I gather it’s likely rubbish.

I tought we are targeting Luk deJong?

  • 6 lordy_geordie // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:38 AM

    Players I would buy are:
    LB Sissoko
    CB Douglas
    CB Mbiwa
    Fw Giroud
    WG Hoilett

Theres 5 players there. Hoilett and Dougles are free transfers
Sissoko and Mbiwa could come at 7m each and giroud aroun 8-10m
Sell Williamson for 3m, I know he has done well but the others are better.

So with selling Williamson and buying the others it is an outlay of roughlty 17-18m
Coupled with IF we get in the champions league being worth 35 m thats a good profit and next year we should be making a profit.

Giroud and Mbiwa are team mates who can work well, Mbiwa is young and powerful and is captain for his club, my thinking is him and Colo at CB which would make it 2 leaders at the heart of our defence. Santon at RB and Sissoko who is a beast at lB.

    What do you think?

  • 7 redondo77 // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:39 AM

Huntelaar seems to be the best choice if we are going to get a new striker

  • 8 redondo77 // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:41 AM

from your list, only Douglas is the best choice.

  • 9 nico // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:43 AM

We definately need some more strikers as the African nations is coming. If we sell best, then we’d pnly have Shola left. I think we need a left footed left back, it helps balance the team. Fergie looks good and wis improving and getting stronger. He looks good in attack as well.

  • 10 nico // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:44 AM

We really do need to have British players in our squad. Buying them young and cheap is the way forward.

  • 11 redondo77 // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Huntelaar scored 32goals in 51 games for Schalke. He scored 31 goals in 50 games for Dutch team.
scored 76 in 92 games for Ajax.

  • 12 nico // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:46 AM

    How old is Huntalaar?

  • 13 Tsunki // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:47 AM

Anyone wonder whether Alan is also over there to offload players? 🙂 swapsies? 🙂

  • 14 Toon_Tom // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

redondo – Huntelaar would be a great buy. Quite unlikely at the moment but if we secure Europe/a then who knows who we could bring in!!!

  • 15 redondo77 // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

    huntelaar is 28

  • 16 wynsleap // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:49 AM

We may be well off for top strikers like Ba and Cisse, Ed, but what happens when the ACON comes around again?
Best isn’t good enough and Shola isn’t always likely to be fit. By then Lovo will have gone and hopefully Ranger and Xisco too.
Nothing wrong with having two young strikers like Rodrigues AND Rhodes coming into the club. We’re going to need them if we get into Europe too.
Incidentally, do the European games clash with the ACON (assuming we make Europe)?

  • 17 Toon_Tom // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Huntelaar is 27/28 i think. A bit old for our “strategy” but a good buy if we did.

  • 18 Toon_Tom // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

    cheers redondo 😉

  • 19 nico // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:51 AM

Huntalaar definately won’t come then. He’s to old at 28. I agree his stats are good though, but its against our transfer policy.

  • 20 supatoonkid // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:53 AM

I think we should look at:
    1 CB: Douglas
1 Young CB: Harry Maguire (can play CDM as well)
1 RB (if Simpson leaves): Mathieu Debuchy or Nathaniel Clyne
1 CM: Moussa Sissoko, Jacob Butterfield, Romain Amalfitano or Geoffry Kongdogbia (If Guthrie &/Or Gosling leaves sign up two of the lads preferably Kongdogbia being one of them as he can play LB as well as the holding role)
1 Wing-Forward: Junior Hoilett or Wilfried Zaha
1 Striker ( 2 depending if Best goes): Luuk de Jong, Jordan Rhodes or Jay Rodriguez

  • 21 supatoonkid // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Also if we miss out on Douglas then go for Mbiwa, miss out on Maguire go for Lewis Dunk

  • 22 redondo77 // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Yes, he is not under 26, but he is the best affordable striker out there and he is proven quality. He is what you need if you want to compete in UCL.

  • 23 Indian Magpie // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:56 AM

when pieters played against england, he was just coming back from a 4 month injury layoff. so !!, i dont know

  • 24 Mings // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:56 AM

Belhanda would be a good signing i think 🙂

  • 25 supatoonkid // Apr 12, 2012 at 10:58 AM

if we want to become more of a 4-3-3 team or 4-5-1 side we could look at Siem de Jong to play as the CAM mid with Cabaye in a box to box role & Tiote playing CDM. If we make Champions League we will keep all our big player, they’ll be begging to stay HWTL.

  • 26 Tsunki // Apr 12, 2012 at 11:01 AM

    Good point by Indian there.

Huntelaar is too old. Besty is still a useful striker I bet he would bag a few with the service our front men get these days. Not many top class strikers would sit on the bench week in and out too.

I see the purse-snatchers have parted with their ‘director of football’. Oh dear, not a happy ship. 🙁

  • 27 davybtoon // Apr 12, 2012 at 11:05 AM

I’d b happy if we got jay Rodriguez very good player, Liverpool sack camolli ha dagleish makes most the signings n camolli gets the blame love it, though he ain’t very good at picking players either lol

  • 28 jimmymagpie // Apr 12, 2012 at 11:11 AM

Ed – we aren’t that well off for strikers, as a couple of injuries, and we’re f-cked! Remember, there is another ACN next year, at a time when the FA Cup gets under way – do you want another Brighton? Ba is increasingly linked with a move, and Best just isn’t Premier League standard, and that has been very evident in recent weeks – does anyone out there seriously think that we would have anywhere near the points we have now if Best had played alongside Ba in recent weeks. Anyway, both Best and Ameobi are extremely injury prone.

  • 29 nico // Apr 12, 2012 at 11:22 AM

I thought Peters was a pretty much done deal. Just going off whats been said on sites like this etc. He is a good player that was just back from injury against England. He would be what we need.

  • 30 nico // Apr 12, 2012 at 11:24 AM

What do people think? Ba to leave for a player such as Huntalaar. He wouldn’t be away at ANC.

  • 31 nufcursed // Apr 12, 2012 at 1:08 PM

huntelaar and giroud are out of reach!!
    definetely +15M players
    we cannot afford them!
    i’d rather have hazard then

  • 32 Charlietoon // Apr 12, 2012 at 4:31 PM

One thing I think we can be sure of is that our transfer plans will depend on whether we get into Europe. With more money to spend and more games coming thick and fast, Alan and Mike will know the squad needs to be bulked up a bit. I dont think will be spending much though.

  • 33 geordiejamie89 // Apr 12, 2012 at 5:13 PM

I don’t think he would be any improvement on Leon Best, so that one doesn’t make sense. We’ve been linked with some other good strikers though so it’s looking good. And with Lovenkrands on his way out too, that would surely leave us needing two strikers. The difficult bit being, who would start first game of the season if we get all these new players.

  • 34 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 12, 2012 at 6:16 PM

Yeah, I agree that we should sign:

Cissokho (we desperately need a left back as we don’t have 1 left-footed left back)

    However, I’d also sign:

    Marvin Martin
    Jan Vertonghen/Aldereweild

  • 35 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 12, 2012 at 6:19 PM

We could possibly attract Hazard if we make the champions league and Spurs miss out. Things are looking bright for us. Man United are a poor team. I just cant believe that they’re going to win the league. Sir Alex or Pardew deserve to be manager of the season. Even Arsenal have had a good season.

  • 36 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 12, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Giroud’s available for around £12m. I’ve read it somewhere. We need 3 class strikers and 1 youngster to make a potent strikeforce (Ba, Cisse, Giroud, Rodriguez). If Ba leaves, we’ll definitely go for Giroud.

  • 37 JP...from The Rock // Apr 12, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Get Marvin Martin!! He is the best up and coming French Attacking Midfielder along with Ben Arfa. Imagine what we could do if we had the both here-WOW…I think I just wet my pants.
