We released a poll on March 18th, asking whether Newcastle could make the top six this season.

Alan Pardew – done great for Newcastle this season

And with Newcastle now in 6th place and 12 points clear of Everton and only five games to play, it looks very much like we can do that, and 86% of our 1666 readers who voted – were spot on.

I just don’t see us winning Chelsea and Everton matches. Therefore, 5th spot is the maximum

Tottenham will unfortunately get 4th. That hammering they gave us might well come back to haunt us as our goal difference is poor compared to other top 6 teams. 5th is doable though.

european qualification is entirely in our hands. A couple of big performances will be needed against city and chelsea, and spurs to continue their run of form and we should be defo looking at 4th spot. Barca, AC,Bayern Munich beware :)

Can’t see fourth. 5th is a clear possibility, just really hoping Liverpool win today so if worst comes to worst and we finish 6th, europe still beckons…

As much as i would like to say yes, i believe we will drop points at wigan/chelsea/mancity and everton, as much as people have dressed up our last few games as being winnable, at any other point in the season we wud say a draw away to chelski/everton and a draw aginst man city wud be seen as gud results. These ‘gud’ results wud not see us into 4th unfortunately.

However stranger things have happened. For example the rest of our season.

    remember arsenal play chelsea,
5 points may look a lot, it did when we were 5 behind tottenham, but all of a sudden arsenal slip up and we’ve got two potential teams to take over for that 4th spot, of course we CAN do it, will we beat chelsea, manchester city and everton? Will we have to win all three games?
I think we’ll lose to Man city, but if we can get some points out of the other two, we’ll be up there on the final day of the season for sure.

  • 7 toonincheek // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:05 AM

Tottenham may still be favourites – just.
We have to show we can take the pressure that will be on us now that we CAN finish 4th.
    We haven’t done that yet.
It’s different being the dark horse, with the incentive of proving everyone wrong.
When it’s a case of living up to the hype and expectations – different ball game.

Trust in Pardew, though, to not let the lads get ahead of themselves.

yep theres every chance .. we need to get at least a draw against chelsea and man city .. then win the rest ..it can be done .. with Arfa,Cabaye, Guti and Cisse in this form why not ..hopefully with Tiote back the defence will have more protection .. gonna be close not matter what..

Funny thing todays game, cant really support liverpool, dislike so many of their staff, from manager to many of their players. Still hope Everton win, and then we go onto qualify for europe ourselves, it wud feel like more of an acheivement that way.

Said it on here before, couldnt abide seeing dogleash and carroll/suarez/enrique jigging around wembley lifting the FA Cup above their heads, difficult to stomach that.

Bit of a win/win situation really, Everton win means liverpool have had a terrible season, liverpool win we are in europe, just cant support the bindippers.

  • 10 Grafton83 // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:12 AM

Odds say 6-1 apparently. I think our run in is a lot harder than Spurs. There are many other factors in our favour though such as:

    No pressure
No real speculation about our manager leaving
    Our current form is great
    We have Cisse

    I think its more of a 50/50 shout than a 6-1 shot.

i can only see top four if some way we get heskey

  • 12 mindshaft // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:18 AM

don’t mind if liverpool win today as long as they get hammered in the final, Daglish is a disgrace to football

This might be a bit controversial but, i know Gary Ablett was a great guy and obviously well loved in merseyside, but why is his sad death commerated before a cup semi final, is it not all a bit over the top, the lad passed away a while ago, why bring it up again now they have already paid respect to the lad a number of times, seems a bit unnecessary, i imagine his family have tried to move on and personally seems like bringing up the whole sorry situation again does no real good. Especially with the date being so close to hillsboroughs memorial.

I really can’t call this, but if we made it into the champions league, would it not be one of the greatest achievements ever??

  • 15 Hatem's better than Messi // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:31 AM

We’ve got a great chance of fourth.

Spurs play a lot of relegation sides and their form is poor.
Chelsea have a lot of fixtures that is going to distract and tire them.

It’s set up for us to have a real go at that fourth place.

  • 16 Tramp // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:34 AM

Yes! Technically we can, do I think we will? I can’t call it. It’s the premier league, anything can happen in the remaining games.

As for Guthrie, if we make Europe he has to stay. We need all the bodies we can with the extra games bearing in mind we’d be looking to build on this season and achieve something out of the domestic cups.

Dogleash is, at last, doing something good for the Toon.

Long may he stay as ‘Pool manager.

  • 18 DembaDutchNufc // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:39 AM

WHY NOT US?! Just keep thinking that, we can only take care of our games. Everything else will either fall into place or it won’t simple as. Hope the s**m win today to guarantee Europe. Toon Toon TOON ARMY!

  • 19 NotAGhostToon // Apr 14, 2012 at 11:59 AM

Has to be, we’re the most in form of the sides challenging and if i didn’t believe we could I wouldn’t have put £5 on earlier in the season at 28/1 ;) £140 returnsssss

  • 20 geordiejamie89 // Apr 14, 2012 at 3:36 PM

If people think 5th is acheiveable, then 4th is just as much so. Tottenham havn’t won too many games recently, and we have two points on Chelsea. Spurs arguably have the easiest run in, but nothing is easy when teams are fighting to stay up, against a Spurs who overall havn’t been playing well for some time now.
Chelsea could drop points as they’re playing some tricky fixtures. Newcastle can qualify if we keep performing the same way, and the Chelsea game could be a deciding factor. They should have lost against Wigan, so even some of the points they’re picking up at the minute, maybe they shouldn’t. But Newcastle have deserved every one of their wins in the five wins in a row. I never get my hopes up too high, but at the same time I’m not writing Newcastle off. I did that at the start of the season thinking we’d be finishing bottom half, and now Newcastle are about as close to winning the title as finishing in the bottom half!

  • 21 Crawfordladd17 // Apr 14, 2012 at 4:47 PM

I think we can get up to 13 points
    Stoke(h) 2-0 Win
    Wigan(a) 1-0 Win
    Chelsea(a) 2-2 Draw
    Manchester City(h) 1-0 Draw
    Everton(a) 2-1 Win

  • 22 Graeme // Apr 14, 2012 at 6:47 PM

I think we will pull it out the bag – we are on a roll, the others are not. My predictions for the last five games are:-

    Stoke (H) 3 points
    Wigan (A) 3 points
    Chelski (A) 1 point
    Shitty (H) 3 points
    Everton (A) 1 point

    A total of 11 points.

Will that be enough to get us 4th place? I have no idea, but I bet it puts us damn close and will terrify Spuds.

Bring it on – ‘Mon the TOOOOOOOOOON lol

  • 23 Szarka // Apr 14, 2012 at 7:08 PM

4th is the minimum :) Both Chelsea and Tottenham in a really bad form, and we’re in sky high. If we would play against them, we would win both matches. Plusz we have less matches, could rest.

  • 24 Troleibusiukas_LTU // Apr 14, 2012 at 8:39 PM

we will definately win ageins chealsea, last year it was 2-2. Man City home, by the time it could be all over for title race. Everton away is more important to us than them, and we will definately have more desire to win. Wigan away will be hard but we are so much better team.

  • 25 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Apr 15, 2012 at 8:03 AM

We need to just caryy on taking one game at a time!

I think we could get 5th but i think 4th will be pushing it!

The throw away lead to Wolves – 2-2 and the two heavy losses to Fulham and Totenham have screwed us for 4th!

The 4-2 loss to Norwich did,nt help our cause either!

Like i said~! One game at a time!
