Carroll Scores Winner – Newcastle in Europe

In a great finish for Newcastle, in today’s FA Cup semi-final tie,  Andy Carroll headed the winner for Liverpool after 86 minutes to put Newcastle into Europe.

Andy Carroll scores winner against Everton today

Oh yes, I almost forgot,  and Liverpool reached the FA Cup final with their 2-1 win over Everton.

And over the 90 minutes Liverpool probably deserved to win the game although their defending at times was not good.

It hadn’t looked good for Liverpool in the first half , when Jamie Carragher had given away a terrible goal after just 23 minutes, when he dithered instead of thumping the ball away, and  Jelavic hit the ball into the back of the net, and Liverpool were 1-0 down at the half.

But Liverpool were a much improved side in the second half, although Andy Carroll missed an absolute sitter from just five yards out on 47 minutes, when he somehow headed the ball wide.

He used to score those when he wore the black and white stripes of his home town club Newcastle.

But then it was former Newcastle center-back Sylvain Distin who made a terrible mistake for Everton,  and his poor pass back was jumped on by Luiz Suarez, and he had the ball in the back of the net in a jiffy.

It was anybody’s game now, but then on 86 minutes, following a corner, it was that Geordie lad Andy Carroll,  who back-headed the ball into the back of the net, to see Liverpool into their second cup final this year, and it was Andy’s second goal this week.

But much more importantly, it means that 6th place in the league will qualify for Europe, and Newcastle are currently 12 points ahead of 7th placed Everton.

While it’s still technically possible for Everton to catch Newcastle,  we will go a long way to making that almost impossible,  with a win against Stoke next Saturday.

We need just 4 more points in our last 5 games to make 100% sure, but that also assumes Everton will win every one of their remaining games.

We’re in Europe next season – believe me – and it’s unbelievable.

Now let’s see if we can make it the Champions League!

Howay The Lads!!

    To clarify:

Firstly, we need to ensure that the gap between us and Everton in 7th is mathematically secured (4 points) so if we win our next match and Everton draw then we are guaranteed at least 6th place. I think this is a done deal, even if the place isn’t mathematically secured by our next match. It will happen.

Secondly, if we finish in 6th we will be guaranteed Europe no matter the outcome of Chelsea’s wandering in the CL. The only difference is if Chelsea win the CL and finish outside the top 4. If that happens, it means the top three from the Prem League will also get CL, but 4th, 5th and 6th place will then go into the Europa.

Either way, aside from the worse ever possible run of results for us, and Everton winning all of their remaining league games, we’re in Europe next season!!

If we finish fourth (which would be absolutely unbelievable!!) we would need to rely on Chelsea not winning the CL (which they won’t!) to be assured of CL football next season. Would be the most amazing year EVER!!!

@Ryan: I’m sure we’ll pick up a win or two but our games are bloody difficult. None of these teams are going to be a pushover, let’s just hope Chelsea are knackered after their trips for wor game!

@Partizan: Bet Mancini’s gutted he didn’t play him now for all that time hah. Hope he drops him again for us though <_<

Great for the fans, even better for our younger players, they’ll get more opportunities to start games.

We need Citeh to be out of the title race just before we play them … so they’ll be gutted.

A Chelsea win tomorrow means we’ll play them on the Wednesday before the FA Cup Final.
It will also be demoralising for an out of form Spurs team.

So I’m hoping for lots of red cards, extra-time and a Chelsea win.

Mate, 6th definitely gets Europe. It would have gone to the FA Cup runners up, however Liverpool, Spurs & Chelski are already in Europe.

    Europa League is still the back up plan though (;

Because if Chelsea finish 5th, then they’ll already be in Europe due to finishing 5th. So 6th place will get it.

If Chelsea finish 6th, then we’ll have finished 5th or 4th, so it’s irrelevant.

3 cases would still have got us in to Europe if Everton had won that game.

    1. Chelsea don’t win the champions league, finish 5th and beat Tottenham
Everton wouldn’t get in europe and we would get the spot
    2. Chelsea finish 5th, win the champions league, but lose to Tottenham in the FA cup, again Everton wouldn’t make Europe, Chelsea would have got the 4th Champions league place, pushing Tottenham to the Europa league.
The runner up in the FA cup only makes it in to the Europa League if the winner makes the champions league 🙂
(As it stands, we need 4 points from 5 games to guarantee Europa)

Liverpool’s win means that 6th place now gets a Europa spot. Whilst NUFC don’t have a top 6 place sewn up, If Everton drop points between now and the end of season, it’s a guarantee.

IN other news, City looked absolutely lethal against Norwich. Pity Tevez had to piss about for 95% of the season. Not looking forward to their visit any more. They’ve apparently rediscovered how to play away again.
