Another shock result by Wigan tonight, with the Latics winning 2-1 at the Emirates, after being 2-0 up after just eight minutes.
Roberto Martinez – has Wigan playing great at the moment
And like in their last game, when they won at home to Manchester United 1-0, Wigan deserved the win tonight, and that puts Newcastle within a possible 2 points of Arsenal, who are in 3rd place.
Arsenal are now on 64 points, and if Newcastle win their game in hand, it puts the Magpies just two points behind the Gunners.
Franco Di Santo scored his first goal since late November for Wigan, after 7 minutes, and Jordi Gómez put one in one minute later after some poor Arsenal defending to give Wigan a shock 2-0 early lead.
But then Thomas Vermaelen got one back for Arsenal, with a nice header after 20 minutes from a right wing cross.
But Wigan hung on well, and defended very well, and in the second half their most dangerous player, Victor Moses, missed a gilt edged opportunity to Wigan 3-1 up, when he was put clean through, but then shot too early and straight at goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
That puts Wigan on 34 points from 34 games and 5 points above the drop zone, and it puts extras pressure on Bl;ackburn, Biolton and QPR to start making up the points gap.
And it could be that Wigan will make another incredible escape from relegation this season, just like they did in the very last game of last season.
Newcastle play Wigan a week on Saturday away, and that will be a tough game now, with Wigan having won four of their last five games and they drew the two games before that.
The only loss in that streak was their 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, with both Chelsea goals later shown to be offside on TV replays, with the Blues winner coming late in stoppage time.
Comments welcome.

Unbelievable! I would have put money on them going down a month ago with their run in, but wow have they turned it around!
I just hope they drop in form before we play them, they can’t maintain this level of performance and results for much longer surely!?
Forget Chelsea and City, Wigan could be our sternest test in our remaining games Haha!

Van Persie is a complete tool, his head won’t fit through the tunnel soon. QPR still to play spurs and chelsea will hopefully do us a favour to keep themselves up. Bolton will have a big say in it too. Arsenal to come back and beat Chelsea or a draw would be nice. But most importantly Newcastle to win our own games.

fellow supporters, I know this isn’t being very optimistic etc. but I don’t think we will manage to get top4 this season. Lemons @63 – I reckon you couldn’t be more wrong, mate. Chelski to beat Arsenal is our dream result. We’ve already made up 5 points over Spurs in one weekend; if Arsenal lose two and we keep on rolling, we could make 6 points on them – 3rd spot here we come!

76 9 // Apr 16, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Pardiola has already proven he’s the master of the extremely limited tactics Stoke has to offer, so, given current form, 3 points on Saturday would not be unexpected. The almost-top of the table would then look very interesting from a black and white perspective, and however good a roll Wigan etc may be on, nobody is on a roll like we would be, should we actually achieve our 6th succesive win.
77 DONYWIRL // Apr 16, 2012 at 11:32 PM
Just a thought: If we were to win our next two games and get a point at Chelsea and the title race is over would Mancini play a weakened team as if arsenal don’t qualify then can get RVP, if spurs don’t Modric etc. Whereas if we qualify we aren’t as as much of a threat?
78 geordiejamie89 // Apr 17, 2012 at 12:07 AM
I don’t think Man City would do us any favours.
79 2_goal_tino // Apr 17, 2012 at 12:11 AM
Don’t think Mancini would play a weakened team, if the title is over he won’t want the season to just fizzle out. Besides how weak a side can he really put out?
Think the Chelsea game being three days before FA cup final is fantastic for us, that could be what decides it. Stamford bridge is always tough but our last two results there (victory and draw) have been encouraging, coupled with a weakened side. That’s our FA cup final right there!
80 tdt // Apr 17, 2012 at 12:32 AM
Great result for the Toon tonight, all we need now is 3 points on Saturday and we’ll be en route for a top 4 finish!
1 game at a time, we can do it. Everyone around us seems to be dropping like flies – this is our great opportunity to break into the top 4 and establish ourselves there with shrewd investment and long-term planning.
Stability is the key in the long-term. To be a regular top 4 team we need Pardew to be our Ferguson or Wenger, in the sense that he’s a preminent fixture for a very long time and pushes the club forward (not in the sense that he’s a baby like Wenger was tonight!).
I’d be happy if Pardew signed a 5 year contract extention tomorrow. Along with Guthrie and Simpson too.

I reckon Wigan have done well recently because the opposition have been have been doing all the pushing and Wigan have picked them off on the break. When we play them we will be looking to pick them off. We’ll be content to hold them and bide our time. As well as they played tonight some of their defending was last ditch stuff.

86 Novocastrian66 // Apr 17, 2012 at 1:28 AM
We will have to go unbeaten until the end of the season to get into the top four, because of our goal difference is so inferior. A big ask in my opinion.
87 out of toon // Apr 17, 2012 at 2:07 AM
we won’t have to go unbeaten
but we will need chelski and spurs to drop some points – and thats a huge possibility. Spurs have some teams deep in the relegation battle and we all know that teams facing the drops will bare their teeth and fight like dogs. Luckily for us Spuds have shown that they have the backbone of a squid and all the fight of a damp cloth…
My predictions for this weekend:
Arsenal are going to draw with Chelski
we’re going to beat Stoke comfortably
Chelski draw with QPR (or maybe an offside goal in the ninth minute of injury time to seal win!!!!!)
just an FYI – wigan have fulham at craven this weekend… they should win that and they’re proven performers at the end of seasons.
Not at all a good fixture for us next weekend, but i’m confident and especially with a good performance at St James this weekend we should walk it in….

I think given the last few games, Newcastle don’t have to go unbeaten until the end of the season. I think it’s fair to say in the Chelsea Arsenal match one of the teams will drop points, or maybe both. Liverpool could do us a favour yet again this season when they play Chelsea in the league. Add to that clubs like Bolton and QPR playing some of the teams around us, there could be plenty points dropped. We could afford to lose against Man City or Chelsea, as long as we win the others.
92 Level 7 Hero // Apr 17, 2012 at 2:37 AM
Firstly, we should all be praying for Chelsea to beat Arsenal on saturday, simply becauase as most of you agree we have a Europa League spot pretty much guarenteed. The difference finishing 5th or 6th is tiny. Maybe 600,000 grand prize money, but enter same the competiton. So even if Chelsea win Arsenal and finish 5th and we eventually finish 6th will it matter?
The difference between finishing 5th, 4th & 3rd however is absolutly massive, for obvious reasons. We would get 20M more for qualifying CL, and failing at the qualification stage, if we could get to the group stage then the money will be ridiculous.
We are in a win win situation in my opinion, we never expected to be anywhere near Europa qualification & get it, but if we were to somehow acheive Champions League qualification at the expense of 3 of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham & Liverpool it would surely have to go down as one of the greatest seasons and upsets by a team since the Premier League began, and I don’t even think I’m exagerating that one bit. We were touted as relegated foder at the beginning of the season.
So I say come on Chelsea, beat Arsenal, and help us out.
I think we’ll beat Stoke simply because we have a better team. No devine insperation, no tactical duel. We simply have the better players.
Hope Perch gets a goal, would love to see him get one before the seasons over.
93 phoonck // Apr 17, 2012 at 3:13 AM
actually, any result for the Arsenal and Chelsea game would do me fine, cos if Chelsea lose, means we have an advantage over them and clinch the 4th or 5th spot, and if Arsenal lose, means we have the slightest of chance to go and nick the 3rd or 4th spot! and if the game ends in a draw, its still a positive result for us as we’ll be gaining points and we’ll be pulling away from Chelsea and nearing Arsenal! Win-Win situation here i think! hahaa

@Level 7 Hero.
Totally agree with you. Chelski conjuring up a victory against the Arse would be the best result for us. A draw being second best and a win for the arse being the worst.
However either way you look at it, all 3 outcomes will benefit Newcastle.

Great win for Wigan!
van Persie is a tool ! Thing is lads he may end

He,s a good player alright but the word- Sportsmanship -

One footnote; Bit pissed off that Jack Wilshire has been ruled out of the Euro,s later this year!
96 Geordie Mitch // Apr 17, 2012 at 5:53 AM
A Black and White Fantasy….
After Arsenal suffering defeat at the hands of Wigan all the upcoming and likely scenarios have been entered into my newly developed super prediction computer….
The results, as can be seen, are astonishing…
SPOILER ALERT (If you dont want to see next weeks results please DO NOT continue reading.)
Wednesday 18th of April 2012…. Chelsea Skipper John Terry admits that his team lacked the cutting edge in their first leg 6-0 humiliation at home to Barcelona saying,
“The boys just wernt going for it… I tried my best but the ref was wearing black and I just lost it…”
Terry himself was dismissed for launching a tirade of racist insults at the man in the middle. He went on to admit that Chelsea were still in the fight for the next leg,
” I think Drogs needs a bit of fire in him, I hopefully will spur him on from the stands when I’m sat next to his wife….”
Saturday 21st of April….
The early kick off sees Arsenal bounce back from their defeat at Wigan and secure all 3 points in a 3-2 win at the Emerites. Didier Drigba was sent off 3 minutes into the game for rushing into the stands to attack team mate John Terry after a supporter handed him a Sun on sunday exclusive regarding Terry’s 3 way with Drogba’s wife and 67 year old Male stripper. Robin Van Persie unfortunatly ruptured a stomach ligament from laughing at the incident and will be ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Newcastle United at home to Stoke follow up their trmendous form by beating the long ball mechants at there own game. A Tim Krul long throw opened the scoring in the 9th minute, a rocket into the top right hand corner. A Demba Ba brace and Cisse’s stunning second half Hat Trick helped increase the Home teams goal difference in a 6-0 win.
An Ecstatic Pardew admitted after the match,
“After the Success of the Goat curry last week I allowed Chieck Tiote to kill a wild Lion with his bare hands, ofcourse, this wasnt necessary as the lion immediately died of fright at the thought of enetering the arena with Chieck.”
It is understood that the Lion meat was used in the Friday afternoon stew which went down well especially with Papiss Cisse.
The Evening showcase saw QPR take on Tottenham Hotspur at Loftus Road. Joey Barton opened the scoring by confusing Cudicini in the Spurs goal, quoting several inane lines from his twitter page. Redknapp tried deflecting critism of his tactics of using Modric as a punch bag for Adel Taarabt by disclosing that Taarabt had a release clause in his contract allowing him to leave the R’s if they were compensated to the tune of 6 packets of Aldi cous cous….
So a good result from Newcastle sees them up to fourth in the table with 4 games to play at the expense of Tottenham and Chelsea…..
Premier League Table 21st April
Man Utd 82
Man City 77
Arsenal 67
Newcastle 62
Spurds 59
Chelski 57
Is there more to come in this series of events…… I’m currently feeding in the fixtures from the Sunday the 22nd and I’ll hopefully find out!!!

Then we should beat Stoke at Tea time.
Then Tottenham losing/drawing against QPR at late kick-off which is not impossible at all looking at Spurs’ dismal recent form.
After that league table will look something like this:
Rank Team Played Pts
3. Arsenal 35 64
4. Newcastle 34 62
5. Chelsea 34 60
6. Spurs 34 59 (or 60 if they manage draw)
Now, we will only be 2 pts. behind Arsenal with a game in hand. That game in hand is against Chelsea and if we win that we can go a point clear of Arsenal. This means not only 4th but even 3rd Champions League spot has opened up now. It’s up for grabs.
Just think had we managed to hold on for few more seconds at Emirates, had Ba scored that penalty against mackems and had we closed the game out against Wolves who went on to lose next 6 games after that. Those were 5 pts dropped. If we had gained those 6 points, we could have now guaranteed Cham League football for next season.

Sorry, I’m commenting on previous topic regarding Ashley Young and Refs.
It’s not just up to Refs and FA to do something about divers. The clubs have the most important role, especially when they already know and admit that their players are divers and they keep playing them, it just means that those clubs will do anything to win even if it means cheatting. FA should be punishing the team instead of individuals if they keep doing it game after game.

Morning – hope Perch takes Simpson place at the weekend, Simmo seems a bit down currently, Perch is flying, plus extra height needed against this band of thugs.

The interesting debate on here is what result we want from the Arsenal vs Chelsea game. I have to agree with level 7, we could do with Chelsea beating Arsenal.
If we finish 5th or 6th it makes very little difference really. It just means we have to play one qualifying round (and if we can’t get through that then we have no chance in the actual competition). However finishing 4th means a lot more money and finishing 3rd (if Chelsea beat Arsenal and we win all our games we will get 3rd) means going straight into the group stages of the CL. Imagine that!
