Young Australian Defender On 10 Day Trial At Newcastle

1:32 pm, Monday, April 16th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 259 Comments

News that Melbourne Heart defender Curtis Good is on his way over to England for a trial with Newcastle United.

Curtis Good – to have 1-0 day trial at Newcastle United

The 19 year-old 6’2″ central defender,  is coming to Newcastle for a 10-day trial, so we suppose Newcastle also have scouts down under.

The left-footed central defender has looked good in his very first season in the A-League, and he joined the Heart from the AIS in February of last year, after he had looked impressive for AIS.

Curtis only tuned 19 last month,  and he has already played 3 times for the Australian U20 side, so he would be one for the future at Newcastle.

General manager John Didulica, whose club was founded four years ago,  confirmed the 19-year-old had just left for a trial at the famous St. James’ Park club, as he tweeted:

“Curtis Good left last night for a 10-day trial with EPL’s Newcastle United.”

Good has made 25 appearances with one goal for the Heart this season, as he replaced the departed Adrian Madaschi.

The ball-playing defender has just recently signed a multi-year contract  with the Heart, who unfortunately play in red and white stripes.

And as fate would have it,  Good made his debut for the Melbourne Heart against the Newcastle Jets in the first game of the 2011–12 Hyundai A-League season.

We’ll have to see how well this lad does at Newcastle over the next week or so.

Comments welcome.

    awful shirt!

  • 2 Cal92 // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:40 PM

When you say he has looked good in his first season, have you actually seen him play or have you heard reports he has looked good?

  • 3 zaktoon_swede // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:41 PM

take a look at this vid of toby alderweireld! it’s hard to judge the quality of a player by watching videos on youtube but this is quite tasty!! after watching this i’d prefer him over verthongen, and it seems like the ajax-supporters rate him higher aswell.

  • 4 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:41 PM

6,2 feet, he’s a big lad then. AP likes big lads it seems… *cough*

  • 5 cyprus // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:41 PM

What’s a ‘1-0 day trial’ Ed (see under pic)? Just kidding. Anyway, on the previous article, imagine a top talent Newcastle fan (Johnson) playing for his team, that would be something to see. Wonder why City don’t rate him…

  • 6 Beattie25 // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:44 PM

On the attack a bit there mate and in ed’s defence he has looked good enough to warrant a trail with nufc and a 20 000 mile round trip.

  • 7 2_goal_tino // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:44 PM

Can’t harm having look at him.

Johnson, I can’t see it happening purely because of wages. I don’t think we would have a problem paying 10+ million for a player because as has been said by the club fees are now paid outright immediately . A wage of 80 thousand a week continues to drain you for 3/4 years. Can’t see any new signings getting offered more than 50/60K/wk

On CB- I like the look of alderweireld, purely because he seems to have a penchant for smashing them in from 30 yards.

  • 8 Cal92 // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:47 PM

Yeah it did sound a bit agressive, didnt mean it like that ha! was just wondering if any of us had seen him on skysports or anything cos often people will say hes good just cos hes got a trial etc. Hopefully hes the next coloccini anyway!

  • 9 martoon // Apr 16, 2012 at 1:58 PM

I didn’t realise we had scouts in Australia! Quite an adventure for the lad – could you imagine when you were 19 (a couple of years ago – cough cough) going to Australia for a football trial.

  • 10 ToonAndy // Apr 16, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Imagine the options we could have if we bought the two defenders…

I could go on forever!… This would give us a much more flexible defence and we wouldn’t be too hard hit by injuries/suspensions/resting players..

  • 11 OoAhDembaBa // Apr 16, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Im from and live in Australia and this had come as a shock to me. I’ve watched him many a times over the course of this season and he’s done alright but he isn’t one I’d believe would make the cut.

All be it, over the season he has played alongside another 19 year old defender and they did play quite well but the standard is different. He could possibly suit the Championship or lower leagues but maybe with our coaches he could improve hopefully.

The Australian market does have a few hidden talents under their skin

  • 12 tdt // Apr 16, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Rather quiet on the blog today…

Hope Wigan beat Arsenal tonight, but get a couple of red cards to key players so we can beat them more easily.

Saturday will be massive in the “4th place race”. Mind, we could possibly be aiming for 3rd if Wigan win tonight, but that might be a bit too optimistic, but we’ll see in 7.5 hours time.

  • 13 Londtoon // Apr 16, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Based on your comments it would suggest perhaps he is one to potentially join under the new reserves squad that is to be invested in instead of challenging right away for a first team place.

OoAhDembaBa – Nice to read an opinion direct from the kangaroo’s mouth so to speak. I know there are other Australians on this blog (AussieToon comes to mind) be interesting to see there opinions as well.

I was thinking – got to be one of the best jobs in the world – An NUFC scout in Australia 🙂

  • 16 Ciaran Thomas // Apr 16, 2012 at 2:52 PM

This lad is a canny player,he was a first team player ! he was getting started before an Australian Defender, hopefully it goes well for him.

  • 18 ToonAndy // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:00 PM

Lads… Who is better… Hatem Ben arfa or Eden Hazard??

  • 19 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:13 PM

Reckon Ben10 used to let Hazard clean his boots, it was an honour for him.

  • 20 TOON4LIFE_1 // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:14 PM

Chelsea’s FA cup final has been scheduled 3 days before our game against them.
They will rest a lot of their players, meaning we got a good chance of taking the game to them

  • 21 Southern Pride // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:16 PM

Harard is a right footed ben arfa.

Btw if we nick CL, Letz dream we have a chance at hazard. hazard on one side ben arfa on the other n cisse to clean the mess up.. wow lez dream

Lets buy his mate as well – Alderweireld

  • 22 ToonAndy // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:17 PM

I have seen Hazard play and he is quality… But Benny has a spark… Everytime he gets the ball no one knows what could happen next…. Most people on this blog put Hazrd on 30+ million… What does that make Benny??

  • 23 Beattie25 // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:17 PM

Who’s better John ruddy or julio cruz?

  • 24 TOON4LIFE_1 // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:17 PM

Also, just wondering whats gonna happen to the reserve team? since we are dropping so many players. Does this mean we will pull out of the league, or are we gonna recruit loads of new players like this aussie dude.

  • 25 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:27 PM

    Beattie – random

  • 26 ToonAndy // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:29 PM

I think Hazard would go for 15 million with a bit of graham carr magic… also if we could get the two ajax boys Jan Vertoghan and Weildereld (close enough) … Then that would do me … maybe throw in Luuk De Jong and his brother Siem De Jong?…. Am I asking too much ??? …. Maybe…

  • 27 Robby Bobson // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:30 PM

We dont have any young centre defenders pushing for first team spots for the first time in years (Saylor, Ramage, Edgar, Kadar in the past.) so this could be good.

  • 28 pengy // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:34 PM

i see Erik Pieters has broke his foot again and will be out for 3 weeks

  • 29 pengy // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:35 PM

in a cast for 3 weeks should i say *

  • 30 bollance // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:37 PM

Dont think we are after Vertonghen or Alderweireld. Think about it.. our targets are usually unkown to the press. The press have been all over Pardews trip claiming those two. Smoke screen.

The other player on show for Ajax were

    Kenneth Vermeer
    Vurnon Anita
    Daley Blind
    Gregory van der Wiel
    Theo Janssen
    Derk Boerrigter
    Ismail Aissati
    Christian Eriksen
    Siem de Jong

  • 31 bollance // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:39 PM

My bet is on Vernon Anita (22) the left back, could be wrong but the way the last two transfer windows hve shaped up expect the unexpected!

  • 32 bollance // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:40 PM

In fact Pardew said it that we would sign a left footed defender although this may well be Eric Peiters

  • 33 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:43 PM

Christian Eriksen is the kiddie, gets on the ball and makes things happen, however as much chance of getting him as us getting Hazard or Vertoghen, i wud think that Aberderwielderbelder wud be the one we are looking at, cant wait to get a shirt with his name on the back.

  • 34 MagPieMan // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:47 PM

This guy is a decent defender, he doesn’t do anything special but he is consistent and gets the job done. He doesn’t do anything that makes him stand out but the fact that he was a regular at the age of 18 and can handle the league is probably the reason we’ve got him on a trial. This is what I think our new youth players will be like, not from big clubs or big leagues but are playing regularly where they are and doing a good job. The scouts will be looking at these players and thinking about bringing them in and making them better and opefully good enough for the prem.

  • 35 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 3:47 PM

Eric Pieters wont sign as he is a bit stiff, lacks pace and technique, his time has gone, forget him, i know from a gud source that he wnt be coming.

Should go and get Baines and then switch Santon to other side, modern day full backs must be able to join in when we have the ball, this is why the top teams are so gud, so many more extra options.

  • 36 Korzic // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:01 PM

Vertonghen will never sign for us because we wont pay Ajax’s value for him and he wants to go to Arsenal.

Good’s looked alright playing for Heart. Decent defender like. Although watching A League matches is like watching Blue Sq. Premier.

  • 37 Robby Bobson // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:02 PM

If hes at Ajax, hopefully he has half an eye on Erikssen to ask Mike for a luxury buy for Champions league :D.

As for a left back goes, im sure Carr has a few tricks up his sleeve. Maybe another bid for M’Bengue? We need a left footer, Santon is probably one of the most one footed players ive ever soon…still good though.

  • 38 tdt // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Anyone think Wigan will beat Arsenal tonight? Or if it realistically matters to us? I think it does, if we beat Stoke and Wigan.

  • 39 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:10 PM

He looks like a replacement for Tamas Kadar, who Alan Pardew blatently doesn’t have too much faith in. Hopefully Tamas Kadar will head out and this lad will fill his shoes. Sell Williamson for Douglas, buy one of the Ajax CBs, unbeatable defence with Erik Pieters and Santon at RB.

  • 40 Robby Bobson // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Totally off topic….whats happened to steve harper???????

Earlier in the season he was in competition with Elliot for the bench, but in th epast few months since his loan month hes dropped completely off the radar?

Dont even see him in training ground pictures anymore?

  • 41 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:21 PM

I doubt Wigan will beat Arsenal. I’m hoping Arsenal will keep form for their game against Chelsea tbh.

  • 42 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Steve Harper is away on loan.

  • 43 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:23 PM

And since he’s got back I think he’s seeing his contract out now. I think he’s due to leave at the end of the season?

  • 44 Beattie25 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:28 PM

    I think you’re all wrong!

Pardew was on a stag do in amsterdam and got wrecked on European beer, hash browns and space cake!

It was like the hangover and Ashley now has nufc tattooed on his stomach.

They went on the match whilst taking LSD and now we have signed the entire Ajax squad.

  • 45 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:30 PM

I think next time Newcastle get a free kick, Yohan Cabaye or Ryan Taylor take it, and the rest of the team do the Fabregas dance! Would be freaking hilarious whether it goes in or not. I’m writing a letter to Pardew.

  • 46 Toon_Sydney // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:39 PM

This bloke is nothing special, ive seen him play a few times and im really surprised his got a trial. But at the end of the day his only 19 and might do well through our youth system, but like i said he hasnt shown any flashes of brilliance in this minor league

  • 47 Beattie25 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:48 PM

That’s 2 of our australian brothers that have said this lad is nothing special.

Either he has got a very good agent or a scout has seen something good in him.

Or what might have happened is Exeter City have contacted his club and the lads manager has gone ‘you little ripper, hey Curtis you flaming galaaarrr I’ve just been on the blower to some big pom club. They want you to fly over and have a trail at their home ST James park. That’s not a knife, this is a knife.’

Obviously due to the time difference the australians won’t know about the stadium name change.

  • 48 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Was at the end of the Chronicle today, that if Chelski or anyone else wanted Krul, they’d have to smash, i repeat, smash, the standing record for a GK transfer.

I’m starting to get the feeling that our outgoings will smash quite a few records in the years to come… If someone is stupid enough to pay it.
    And they usually are.

  • 49 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:55 PM

Well Caroll was the most expensive English transfer ever I believe. And that is bonkers, even if he lives up to his expectations at Liverpool eventually, he’s never going to get Golden Boot. I don’t think Chelsea will go for Krul. They’d have to garantuee first team football, which Cech won’t be too chuft about. And Krul is already number one at a bigger club here anyway, so it would have to be about the money.

  • 50 LewSpi // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Haha Beattie I reckon you’ve cracked it.

Ed, do you get more money for the adverts with noise? If you do then fair enough, if not, then they’re very annoying considering the amount of times I refresh the page to read comments. Any chance you could stick to silent ones?

Apologies for this post not really being football related.

  • 51 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 4:57 PM

The only two players I think may be at risk over the summer are Tiote and Demba Ba. But Demba will most likely only leave for PSG, and it’ll take a massive transfer fee for Newcastle to sell Tiote. People believe we’re about selling all our players, Mike Ashley turned down a 30 million bid for Caroll, he only sells at the right price. Players like Barton were actually getting in the way of ambition.

  • 52 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:02 PM

geordiejamie@47…you really think we are bigger than Chelsea? We may have a bigger stadium, but we don’t think as big and as for trophies…well, I’ll let you figure that out…
I don’t see any other “big” clubs openly talking of selling their bestest at the right price.

  • 53 calvinzolamakongo // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Wouldn’t get your hopes up bout Tis lad I play for afc Sudbury reserves where the first team is in the Ryan league so 3-4 leagues below conference and we brought in a player from the a league who was 17 he originally came over to sign for some league 2 side b4 the went bankrupt so we got him but he was shit couldn’t even get on for the reserves use to like his stories about being on tele playing football and impersonating him as I too was a bench warmer

  • 54 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Can u belive it?! Not ONE player from us nominated for PFA young player or PFA player of the year.
    Not ONE.

All players comes from the top 4. What a bloody joke. And absolute disgrace and an outrage.

  • 55 gaz 44 // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:16 PM

solano i think you will find fergie has said every player has his price. i wouldn’t say were a bigger club than chelsea either thou but i suppose every1 has there own opinion on what makes a big club.. for me the only reason they’re bigger is they have won cups/leagues and obviously have a bigger draw for players

  • 56 calvinzolamakongo // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:17 PM

  • 57 gaz 44 // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:18 PM

its ridiculous really.. Danny.. for me the best player in the league this year is yaya toure but for ba krul cabaye to not get a mention is wrong

  • 58 -Tendo- // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:19 PM

LewSpi – there even worse when you read this blog at work and you’re boss is sitting behind you! not the most ideal situation….

  • 59 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:23 PM

I do believe we are a bigger club than Chelsea, based on the fact Newcastle has a bigger fanbase, Newcastle has a much bigger stadium, and if you look at history since both clubs formed, Newcastle have been a dominant side in times past. To think Chelsea are a massive club because they have an owner who is loaded without a clue about football is insulting to the game. If teams were solely based on owner’s riches, what’s the point.

  • 60 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:25 PM

    @gaz 44
Pundits have not been able to stop talking about how good Krul, Cabaye and Tiote has been this season.
Now it comes to an end and they’re not even nominated.

And whats worse is that only the top 4 teams atm are…
It’s insane, how can they overlook other teams like that?

  • 61 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:27 PM

@ solano and you’re completely wrong. Other big clubs as you put it are linked at selling their best players. You forgot Chelsea paid liverpool 50 million for torres? Renaldo to Real Madrid? Fabregas to Barcelona? All the big clubs will sell when the price is right, Newcastle are no different.

  • 62 2_goal_tino // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:33 PM

@49 – Exactly! The only ‘star’ player we’ve sold, who was overrated when he played for us anyway, was for ludicrous money. The other players to go were not to gain money but due to contract discussions not progressing at all. I can see the same happening this time- so Guthrie and Simpson may leave. I expect us to get and turn down offers for Tiote and Krul and the Ba situation depends entirely on the mythical clause situation. This summer will be about consolidating and investing in the development squad.

  • 63 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:38 PM

Dannyo – its the players player of the year award isnt it, voted for by fellow professional footballers, lets face it most of them are as thick as sh1t anyway, defo think Krul should have been in young player and collocini and ba should have been considered for player, think Saylor wud have been there as well if he didnt pick up his injury. Tiote and cabaye have been in and out for me.

  • 64 2_goal_tino // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Think Krul should definitely be in ahead of Welbeck, whose been average at best.

I know Parker’s good and everything, but I hate the love in for him. Yaya Toure is much better

  • 65 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Just find it extremely weird, when u see some players on twitter putting up their team of the year, with Collo, Krul, Ba, Cabaye, all in it, and still not one bloody player nominated.
    It’s just so extremely unjust.

  • 66 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Oxlade chamberlain and welbeck have done nothing, for me Krul wins young player of the year award easily, typical biased towards the ‘top 4 clubs’, i wud say Krul has had as big an impact as any other player in the league in respect of how many points he has been worth to his club this season, i find it a total joke, but very predictable.

Players like Yaya Toure, Leighton Baines, Fabricio Collocini, Vincent Kompany, RVP, and maybe Gerrard (as he is still a one man team.

Heres another alternative list – Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Seb Coates, Joey Barton, all had great years. NOT.

  • 67 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:59 PM

Krul is also the strongest contender to Joe Hart for the Golden Glove, for most clean sheets.
How they cannot see it is beyond me. How can he not get PFA Young nomination, bloody hell, just give the prize to him, no young player has done better.
If u’re 23 years old, challenger for the Golden Glove and don’t even get nominated…
My word, the world, and me, has gone mad.

  • 68 pizzicatochan // Apr 16, 2012 at 5:59 PM

I am sure you guys do not want our gems to be exposed to the world. It’s a grace in disguise that none of our players are nominated.

  • 69 2_goal_tino // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:01 PM

The whole thing is ridiculous. Timmy has been the second best keeper in the league this season and it’s his first season. These things always favour attacking players (and Parker), so no surprise that Kompany and Colo had no chance.

NUFC player of the year. Have been many standout performers but at different times of the season. If Ba had been the same since ACON definitely him, same if Cisse was here before. Tiote/ Cabaye too hit and miss. For me it’s between Colo and Krul – both been immense! I’ll give it to Krul though.

  • 70 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:06 PM

geordiejamie@61..yes, trading goes on – my point was none of the teams and the deals you mention were talked up by the selling club. There are however, statements given only recently by our MD and hints given by our manager that we are looking to move on players for profit.
As for who is bigger – I have always argued that NUFC has the POTENTIAL to be the second or third biggest club in the country..but we are far off realising that..and having a revolving transfer door will not be the way forward.

  • 71 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:13 PM

I agree, talking up selling players should be a no-no. However, i see it as the board preparing us for the inevitable tbh. Those statements came before we were in our current state, which is 90% ready for Europe, and possibly even CL if a miracle happens.
Unless we have a proper source of income, which we don’t yet, it’s for me quite obvious that atleast one name is likely to be shipped up, but for a humongus fee.

As for being a bigger club, let’s not get ahead of ourselfes. A big club these days are measured on trophy history, how long u’ve been in top 4 contention, fan base and how rich the club is.
We only qualify for that in the fanbase departement imo, i rate us around 6-7th spot on that. We’re not rich yet either, we’re just about even.

  • 72 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:17 PM

I’d give Krul young player award anyday. He’s come straight into the team and had no worries, he’s joint with Hart (the mega millions team) for the Golden Glove. And given that he’s come through the ranks, not a mega buy like De Gea, then he’s been a gem, and always gives confidence to the defenders and the fans. Coloccini has probably been our best overall player this season. His mistakes are few and far between. He’s settled down and probably on of the four best CBs in the league, the other three in my eye being Kompany, Vermalen, and Vidic when he’s played. And given the fact that there’s probably been more shift arounds in our back four than in any in the prem league, it’s almost a miracle how many clean sheets we’ve had. No Newcastle player will be likely to get their name mentioned, but it’s only good for Newcastle. The less Newcastle players in the limelight this season, the more can step into it next season when we’re even better.

  • 73 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:18 PM

NUFC player of the year is a real toughy, but yep i wud go for Krul, has not made one mistake all year, unbelievable consistency for a keeper, he is as solid as a rock (kiss of death) and once again this weekend his bravery will be seen against the long throw onslaught that we will be up against.

Collo and Ba have been great as well, whilst the rest of the squad have done great, Pardew will no doubt be overlooked for manager of the year, even though we must be miles ahead on the bookies handicap list.

  • 74 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:21 PM

DannyO@71…we must stop agreeing like this 😉
You make a valid point about our current status – which gives the powers that be a great chance to amend the “plan” somewhat as we are ahead of the game apparently – so hopefully, no major sales!
I’m not sure what you mean by “proper source” of income – I take it you mean transfer trading profit is the only way to operate economically under the Ashley model? If so, then it is unlikely we will realise the clubs latent potential as one of the “big clubs”

  • 75 Pigott93 // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:23 PM

any else think we shud get toby alderweireld as a right back instead of simmo?? he seems to be a good player and has played there for belgium and seems to be able pick a good pass..and we can then get douglas for centre half

  • 76 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:26 PM

Lol, i’ll try to disagree more often 😛
Nah, when i say source of income, i mean things like CL for one, which in turn should yield higher paying sponsor deals in various areas.
Ofc increase in gate recipets, more TV money.
Thinks like that, looking at the top 4, we should almost be able to double our income if all goes well over the next 3 years.

And if we continue to be smart about the wage bill, u can add 6 players to it and still have a profit of £30 million every year.

And given the focus on youth aswell, and maybe increasing stadium capacity like we talked about the other day… The sky’s the limit mate. We would never have to sell another player if it came to that 😉

Ofc, this is considering all continues in the same direction. U never know in football.

  • 77 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:28 PM

I think it’s too easy to say Chelsea are a bigger club because of their recent history. However I believe history goes all the way back to the forming of a club, and in that regard, we’re no small team. I accept that Chelsea have the bigger team, as they are about to play Barcelona, and could potentially still win two trophies this season. However there’s a difference between a bigger team, and a bigger club. Newcastle is just as rich in history, albeit not recent. Chelsea couldn’t even sellout their ticket allocation at Wembley ffs, some massive club that is.

  • 78 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:33 PM

And in five years when Newcastle has been making money, and Chelsea’s owner is sick of throwing hundreds of millions into a team that can’t fill a stadium at Wembley, Newcastle will have the money to increase it’s wage bill eventually to attract the best. But you have to make money before you spend it. And I’d much rather have Mike Ashley running Newcastle than that Torres buying idiot any day of the week.

  • 79 2_goal_tino // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Anyone seen the segment on skysports where our squad played Newcastle eagles at basketball and football? Notice how ridiculously competitive Jonas was even when playing basketball. His reaction to blocking a shot was brilliant. Krul had a nice little dig at Pards as well.

  • 80 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:36 PM

I wud say Chelsea are a more successful club CURRENTLY, however they are not a bigger club than newcastle, never have been and they never will be, they are CURRENTLY having a moment in the spotlight, however this is financed by an alien to their history and culture, over time they will fade into the poisonous sh1tty club they have always been, and Newcastle will one day under gud ownership stabilise and rightfully sit at the table with real clubs with real souls.

I think the difference is great between real big clubs and maybe current successful ones, i include spurs in that, 34000 home fans and empty seat in their allocation for an FA cup semi, i wud see spurs as a bigger club than chelsea, even sunderland but as successful no. The two terms should be kept seperate.

  • 81 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:37 PM

    DannyO…I’m feeling the positivity….. 🙂
Though we are effectivley starting our youth policy from scratch again after it has been deemed a failure.
The shrewd recruitment policy is arguably a one which will only take the club so far if it is only to dovetail with selling others for profit- not only is it reliant on finding gems consistently but if we are to trade our best acquisitions it will mean the buying teams/rivals strengthen their hands.
Protecting and building a squad on what we have now has to be the way forward…and like you say, extra revenue SHOULD ensure that

  • 82 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Oh yes, i think we’re far from making a pattern for our club just yet. We don’t know if this summers signing will be as succesfull as this one have. I mean 5 out of 8 has had a good impact this year, and another two of em, possibly 3, could have a great impact next season.

But if it happens again and again, and we see a noticable pattern here, we are certain to keep the ammount of good players being brought in. I mean, i think it’s highly unlikely, but that’s me, that 3 of our big players will leave like this again.

The club is on the up, it’s exciting to be in and around it, it’s getting a good rep overseas. It remains to be seen if it all holds water imo, but it’s looking good so far.

Then again, 3 seasons ago we were relegated with the same owner in charge.

  • 83 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:48 PM

There is no guarentee we are selling our best players, have Krul and Collocini just signed new 4/5year deals, is that not enough intent by our owner that our players arent up for sale i dont know what is,

if somebody comes in with a massive deal for Tiote then away he goes, i love the lad but 30 million is a joke of a price for a player who has maybe played well half a dozen times this year, and some of our best performance have come without him.

It is clear we now have a plan on how to maximise our potential as a club, it is going well and although it wud be sad to lose a big hitter of the team, every player has his worth and if any club wud like to give us double the money (ala Carroll) then more fool them.

  • 84 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Fair point to say that we may have as much as Chelsea to look back to when it comes to older history surrounding the club.
But to be fair, if u’re not a Geordie, like me, or haven’t been in and around football for the last 60 years, it really ammounts to very little abroad.

A black and white film with players lifting a trophy, shown to a player being in talks with the the club regarding a possible transfer, is hardly the way to convince a player that the club is on the up.

Constant success at a high level, in our modern times is the only way to show proper size of the club these days i’m afraid. Unless u’re a supporter like we are, very little history is actually known.

  • 85 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:55 PM

The only players i see going anywere are maybe Ba (decent money, timebomb knee remember), and Tiote as potentially Chelski may pay massive money 30m for him, as they need him, personally wud try and steal josh Mccreachan from them in some money swap deal, they boy has real potential,

Check will not enjoy Chelskis bitter and twisted dressing room by the way, so i imagine he wouldnt want to go anyway.

  • 86 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Cheik..I take your point but I think you miss mine!
On Tiote – he signed a 5year deal last summer – yet Lambias was talking in the Chron recently, as though his sale this summer is inevitable.
Football trading has always gone on, yes, but building a team worthy of the city will mean we will have to turn down big offers sometimes and when we do sell, re-investment of whopping fees will have to be done if the club wants to win something tangible.

  • 87 ToonDownSouth // Apr 16, 2012 at 6:59 PM

Pardew has said many times, as recently as two days ago, that fans need to understand that players will be sold.

I hope everyone doesn’t get upset and shocked when that happens.

  • 88 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:02 PM

I agree, Ba and Tiote are the potential players we may see leave. I wouldn’t mind taking Sturridge in exchange for Tiote, plus money ofc.
Also, as u say in previous post, signing up important players on long deals shows intent, and where we’re headed. It’s all good.
If we could get in, and that’s a big IF, in excess of £25-30 mill for the two them, i’d be very happy with that.
Think of the players we could bring in.

  • 92 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:04 PM

  • 93 ToonDownSouth // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:05 PM

The problem comes in what you want from your football club.

Personally, I get very attached to players. I don’t want a constant revolving door of personel. What are you supporting then?

If you come from Newcastle, then you are supporting a representation of your city. But I do not, and so I am supporting players that you feel a bond with from going to games.

  • 94 davybtoon // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:05 PM

  • 97 Beattie25 // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:10 PM

We will never be big team when our own fans don’t have the imagination to make it so. Too many of you are so stuck in your own disappointment that dreaming is not an option if it warps your view on reality. What happened to ‘yeah we are going to get 4th c’mon!!!!’ or ‘yeah they can have then, for £60 million’. Come on guys lighten up we are not Birmingham! we are financially sound, our team is strong and any deals made will be for the good of the club do get with the positivity. I tell you, if we don’t have a game for at least 5 days you lot start slowly getting depressed and I then get angry.

The summer is going to be exciting and I for one am not too bothered about the big clubs, cos we are now too back to being a big club. What defines a big club? Playing in 4 competitions, being an attractive option to big name players and having a massive fan base. We can make the champions league without the need for a miracle! We can do it with skill, ability and passion.

Stop debating who we may sell and setting yourselves up for the dissapointment of the Europa league. I am more interested in who we may buy and how we are going to attack Europe and play against some of the best in the world. Not every great club/player plays in the champions league so regardless of which competition we are in we will have a smashing time. Remember when we got to the semi final of the uefa cup in (I think) 2004? What a journey and we were so unlucky. Bits our team is amazing for the first time in years. Let’s get hard ons for that point rather than a flop on for and potential bad news.

We will strengthen in the summer not weaken. At times it feels like we are going backward but since Aug 2009 it has been a long march forward. Get with the programme

  • 98 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:10 PM

  • 102 solano // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:18 PM

TDS 93&95…points taken and understood 😉
I know exactly what you mean about attachment to players – it maybe naive and hopelessly romantic in the era of the 200k a week footballer – but I was brought up in the era of putting your faith in those fellas who wear the black and white stripes and believing that they cared as much as me!
I know the game has changed into a business and things are different, but I just don’t get how people like davyb, should embrace wholeheartedly the thought of selling players who have contributed the most!

  • 105 davybtoon // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:27 PM

Solano I think you’ve jus answered you question your stuck in the past n think u need to get with times n realise every player at every team has a price n when there’s club like Chelsea n man city prepared to pay whatever it takes to get a player then u better get used to the fact that if u hav a good player n they want them it’s gonna happen, as a Nufc u shud b used to selling our best players stop acting like its Ashly who has brought this to the club, apart from shearer we’ve sold pretty much every good player we have had.
U also need to stop acting like we’re gonna sell colo, cabaye, hba, tiote, krul, cisse all in one go simply not true we will sell say maybe tiote n ba but we will bring in about in players to replace them it’s what happens in football

  • 106 2_goal_tino // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:28 PM

On a different note: we’ve conceded the most penalties of any team this season (9) and won the second lowest total of just 3.

  • 107 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:29 PM

I think people are paranoid, simple as. Just before the season started, when we had sold our “best players” fans were going bonkers thinking we’d go nowhere.
Now people on here aren’t really repeating the same words are they? Really?
Missing Jose Enrique, Nolan, Barton, or Caroll are we?
The answer is no, because we’re only a whisker away from being in Europe next season, and the lowest we can realistically finish is 6th.
To be repeating the same things as last season is a bit silly. If we do sell a player, it’ll be because it’s worth it FOR NEWCASTLE UNITED TO GO FORWARD!

  • 108 Beattie25 // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Look any plan to sell Tiote will be non existent. If a club comes in for him and offers daft money then he’ll be off if not we will not try and flog him. Pardew doesn’t need 30-35 million to build an excellent team. He needs about £15 million and a wage bill of about 150k per week. If we finish top 6 and get into Europe that’s about 10 million there. If we sell Simpson and best that’s another 5 million. Then we rid ourselves of smith, xisco, lover, gosling etc… and that’s 150k in wages to use.

We will not sell Ba or Tiote unless it’s too good to turn down or the player wants to leave.

We will sign 5 players for about 15 million and then our team will be top 4 material. The sports direct ethos is to become the biggest brand in that particular field. Ashley has done that eliminating jjb, jd and dw in the process. He wil want to do the same in the football arena. He didnt become successful selling his assets! He bought brands for cheap prices and turned them and himself into a conglomerate. If somebody said to Ashley I’ll give you a billion for Umbro he’d say yeah, no probs, too good to turn down. Until then he will hold onto the assets and grow the brand. Ashley could have come in, changed the name and made us wear Umbro kits with sports direct advertisements on our tips. He hasn’t. He fcuked up, rectified his mistakes and now is building a brand and that brand is nufc. Ashley will not settle for 6th place when there is a chance to make his club and his business a global brand for such a low cost. Why accept 30 million for one player when in 2 years that player could make the difference between 10th-6th place and 7 million a year and 4th-1st and 50 million a year?!

  • 109 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Solano – i think you are missing the point a little, nobody wants our best players sold (i wud be p1ssed if Krul, Collocini, Cisse, Ben Arfa was sold at any price) however if we sell tiote (has barely played this year) or Ba (timebomb knee) for unbelievable money (ala carroll), then if the team is then strengthened like it has been this year, then we are still going forward,

me thinks Pardew would almost enjoy pocketing 30/40 million for a Ba/Tiote sale as it wud be re-invested to make the team/squad stronger.

    wrecked ramsey

Just on the thread about pardew being at Ajax game how amazing would be if we signed vertoghen n alderweild I reckon would only cost 18mil for the 2 of them n ya defence would b great

  • 183 beefman13 // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:40 PM

the lad from feynoord, wijnaldum is a terrific prospect, got a feeling we might be back in for him, just the type we love at the toon direct has pace great ball in the box and can score goals and beat players at will, its going to be interesting in the summer transfer wise it has been mentioned daft money coming in for tiote, krul, these would be hard for us to take but we have to have faith in the system that is being used at the toon concerning the profit margins of buying and selling players, we have to have even more faith in graham carr, we simply cannot knock back maybe at times 1,000 per cent profit on players, ie we have krul who cost nothing and chelsea may offer up to 20 million that is actually 2,000 per cent profit, maybe 6/7 hundred per cent profit on tiote who could go for up to maybe 20/22 million in my opinion, it would be hard for us to take but we must trust in a system that is producing the goods!!!!

  • 184 HOVIS (the poster formerly known as cheick norris) // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:41 PM

    Speaking of spurs

The white kit, the over-expectant fans and the total collapse in a huge game.

Harry Redknapp must think he’s England manager already.

  • 185 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:42 PM

i didnt mean John Terry shags his teammates, maybe there girlfriends, but wouldnt put it past him, nasty piece of work, its probably an initiation when juniors join chelski, never liked that disturbed look in his eye.

  • 186 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:43 PM

haha, aye i did mate, a VERY good quote that.

  • 187 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:43 PM

Why is everyone raving on for Wigan? 1. We’ve still got to play Wigan, so we don’t need them to be on fire. 2. Arsenal still have to play Chelsea, who we need to drop points.
More like come on Arsenal for me.

  • 188 davybtoon // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:44 PM

There is no way Chelsea will come for krul have u seen the keeper they hav on loan at Madrid courtois he’s amazing n only 19, n if they did I would want courtois on perm deal as part of it

  • 189 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:45 PM

U know what, i reckon players like Terry, Lampard, Drogba, they’re ruining the club by dragging players in different directions from the manager.
Can’t help think AVB would still be there if Lampard and Terry especially wasn’t.

Also, i cant help think that would be our dressing room if Nolan and Barton was still here. But i’m only guessing.

  • 190 HOVIS (the poster formerly known as cheick norris) // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:47 PM

@185 wouldn’t put it past bramble though

  • 191 check the toastie // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:48 PM

GJ89 – the more points arsenal drop tonight will only make them want to knack chelsea more, and if they get beat tonite and chelsea then turn them over and we win both our next games we are above both teams, simple really, support wigan it makes sense. Us against wigan is a different day and different game, tonite is irrelevant for their performance against us.

  • 192 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:48 PM

It’s better that they beat Arsenal and Man Utd and punch above their weight against them. Rather that then do that against us.
I can’t see us losing, or even drawing to them mate.
We have them in our pocket imo.

  • 193 LewSpi // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:51 PM

GJ89 as I mentioned earlier, Arsenal lose this, and we win on Saturday as we’re just 2 points behind 3rd, irrelevant of Chelsea, if we keep winning then Chelsea aren’t a concern. If we don’t keep winning then surely we’d want the teams around us to be losing?

  • 194 davis_toons // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Moses is really great player to have

  • 195 BennyS // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Do Arsenal supporters twist every single game they aren’t winning and the opposition take their time whilst they are in a position to get a result? Like the Arse will never have slowed a game down before. Shut up and get on with it twisty Cockney tossers.

  • 196 davybtoon // Apr 16, 2012 at 8:52 PM

  • 203 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:07 PM

Oh yea because a Wigan that beats Arsenal and Man Utd isn’t going to be confident when it comes to playing us. If they can beat Arsenal, they’ll have no trouble believing they can beat Newcastle. I’d rather they were put back in their place.

  • 204 HOVIS (the poster formerly known as cheick norris) // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:11 PM

@davy that’s what the lol was for. I was being a bit tongue in cheek. De gea could become the next cech or van Der sar. Rather than the next barthez or Roy Carroll lol. And courtois is a direct replacement for cech certainly

I see people’s views on Arsenal getting beat. But I must say I’d rather Wigan were playing pants and it would be one less team we’re playing to worry about. Hopefully Arsenal will come back against Chelsea that’s the one that matters.

  • 209 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Btw, it would seem that the gamble concerning CBs during January did pay off. That’s £2,5 mill well saved imo.
We’ve, fortunatly, made it just fine.
Was scary for a moment tho, but Perchinio came through for us:)

  • 210 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:17 PM

@205 i like it. And I hope so. We’ll have to play well to win. Less of the Norwich performance a few weeks ago, more of the West Brom match first half and we’ll smash any team.

  • 211 Tramp // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:18 PM

Applied for a job through Sunderland City Council the other day. The job is based in the Lake District but i still feel so dirty and confused.

Anyway, still see Arsenal winning this!

  • 212 geordiejamie89 // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:19 PM

Yea we can afford a better CB now, and we’re in a better place to attract a good player now. Our wage caps are our biggest limit, but at the same time it’s sending the club the right way.

  • 213 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:20 PM

  • 215 LewSpi // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:22 PM

Dannyo, to answer your question I would of course prefer a draw, but if one has to win I would have to wait until after this game with Wigan. If arsenal win tonight, then I’d prefer them to bet Chelsea aswell, if arsenal drop points tonight then it’s game on, of we’re gonna go for champions league, then why not smash it and try get 3rd? It’s not untouchable, especially if they lose tonight.

  • 216 HOVIS (the poster formerly known as cheick norris) // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:24 PM

@211 but to compensate for wage caps we have a great bonus structure. Gives players an incentive.
Play well and your wages increase massively. None of this £150000 a week just for breathing

  • 217 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:26 PM

Does anyone else reckon Gomez looks a bit like Van Nistelrooj?

  • 218 Dannyo // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:27 PM

Lol, 3rd would just be insane, and ofc i want that to. But i have to be realistic about it. I still see 5th or 6th as our best bet, but i’m more than happy to be proved wrong.

  • 219 StuW // Apr 16, 2012 at 9:28 PM

It’s many posts away now, but people were getting really carried away with the sums they think Tiote and Ba will bring in. Ba will go and we will get about £2 million profit after his and his agent’s cut, because of the £7 clause, which was perfectly reasonable at the time. Tiote will not fetch the stuoid sums people are saying, though we will make a 8-figure profit on him, tremendous!

  • 258 Roscarelli // Apr 17, 2012 at 12:30 AM

Hi guys, I’ve read the blog for a few years now and decided to sign up and give you my thoughts on Good. Honestly, I never thought of a player of his calibre ever coming to the Premier League. Yes, the A League does produce a few hidden gems but the standard of football played in the league is amongst the worst I have ever seen. I live near Sydney FC’s home ground and there isn’t an inch of motivation to go watch players like Brett Emerton and Harry Kewell.

Would be interesting to see how he develops if he does sign for the Mags but I wouldn’t keep my hopes up.

  • 259 toonydoonunder // Apr 17, 2012 at 12:28 PM

Have to agree with you Roscarelli i live in melbourne and have been to a couple of games including the melbourne derby and the standard is pretty poor possibly 2nd div or lower ,i can only hope this kid is one for the future and good luck to him but i wont hold my breath.Nice to see some of the negativity has dropped off and a great sense of anticipation has taken over.
