Newcastle Interested In Gylfi Sigurdsson

News in the Daily Mirror today that Newcastle are ready to make a move for Swansea loan star Gylfi Sigurdsson, in the summer.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – has looked great for Swansea this year

We had a piece on Sigurdsson earlier today, suggesting that he would be a good player for Newcastle to go after, since he’s a good goal-scoring attacking midfielder, with a good record so far in football.

We have no idea if Newcastle are really interested in the player,  but the Mirror report suggests that Alan Pardew was hugely impressed with the Icelandic International when Newcastle beat Swansea 2-0 at the Liberty Stadium on Good Friday.

The Mirror is reporting that Newcastle have already made some initial inquiries about the midfielder, who is on loan from German Club Hoffenheim until the end of the season,  and Gylfi played there with Demba Ba.

It’s no secret that Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers would be very keen to sign the 22 year-old, but there will be other clubs also interested in signing the youngster, if only the way he has been playing since coming on loan to the South Wales club on January 1st.

Sigurdsson was named Premier League Player of the Month for March,  and has so far scored seven goals and two assist in his 15 appearances for Swansea this year.

As we reported earlier today:

  • Sigurdsson signed for Reading back in 2008, and played a total of 51 times for Reading with 23 goals and 10 assists, so this lad is certainly a productive player
  • Gylfi joined Hoffenheom in August of 2010 on a four year contract, and for a sum that is said to have exceeded the record of £6.5M that Reading received for Kevin Doyle
  • In the last two years he has played 39 times for the German club with 10 goals and four assists, and played for Hoffenheim when Demba Ba was there, before joining Swansea on loan in January
  • The Iceland International joined Swansea because he was not getting enough playing time in Germany, and there’s no doubt this player has an eye for goal
  • He will not come cheap, and it could take around £7M for any club to sign the player.

We hope the Mirror report is accurate in that Newcastle are interested in this player, because he looks very good, and he will only improve with more Premier League experience.

What do you think?

Exactly as Geordie @1 says: sign him up, he ticks all the boxes for an NUFC signing, and there’s no possibility he will still be at the swans come August – it’s just a question of who signs him up- let’s go !

Yep called this one before, only player in his side that worried me that day, stood out as a frustrated but evidently very talented individual. Pards plan to shut him out of the penalty area was key to us winning that one imo.

I hope so… Cabaye, Tiote and Sigurdsson will be immense… but after all the news is from Daily Mirror.

Reading between the lines: we are destined to finish in the top 4 this season.

Also, well done Reading for getting promoted. Hoping for Southampton (automatic) and Birmigham (play-offs) to win promotion too.

For next season: we need to strengthen our defence and get lots of young midfielders/attackers to play in the reserve team and push for a first team place. Get Guthrie and Simpson signed up long-term too.

If we do this, plus continue to bring through the promising youngsters we already have at the club, we should have a competitive squad that can do well in the cups and in Europe, but which is also capable of cementing a top 6 position for many seasons to come.

He is too expensive in my eyes. You can get the same type of player for a lot less. I would have thought we’d be better off putting more money towards a top class LB, CB, RB first and foremost. And if we’re going to pay 8 million for a player, I’d rather it was Adam Johnson, who supports Newcastle. This lad has already said he wants to stay at Swansea.

However I do suppose, if he’s playing that good for Swansea. I can imagine he’s capable of a lot more under Alan Pardew. And it’s something that Newcastle have been struggling with, we need a midfielder to score plenty goals for us. Like Nolan did in our Championship level season. This lad can score from the edge of the box, and doesn’t need too much room. And he looks as good at set-pieces as anyone at Newcastle at the minute.

Don’t think he’s dynamic enough a player to warrant 7m, especially when we have young Vuckic, who plays in a very similar style and could be better given a prolonged chance (fitness depending).

Couldnt agree more, vuckic is coming on 20, and i see him as a huge prospect if given game time and confidence. Hows he going to feel, when we buy the exact same type of player for 7mil uncessacary. Much rather see the money go on our defense and keep places open for youth in our team. Why buy players to cover, when we have abeid, vuckic and ferguson all itching for a place in midfield

Just looking at the 4-3-3 at the minute. We do need one or two midfielders. In the midfield three, we have Tiote, Cabaye. . . . then that third place has been dished out to half the squad. Obviously we need a quality player to make that place his own. I think he could be the right choice. He has plenty to offer the squad, from his good free-kicks, to his ability to score from outside the box. Fergie is the only young player that seems to be impressing Pardew at the minute, as the rest are struggling to get any time on the pitch at all. Vuckic could do with another season on loan next season, he will learn more from playing every week then being a back-up player for Newcastle, will is all he’s good enough for at the minute.

    A few points:

I would implore NUFC to sign a quality American international. Even if he’s mostly a squad guy for depth.

Internationally, Huntlaar is a bit old, but Julian Draxler from Schalke is the kind of AM we could use…just saying.

If your implying that Adam Johnson will be available for 8million, then I’m afraid your going to be disappointed. He is atleast worth 8 figures and this is not taking into account the fact that City will try and squeeze as much out of the buying club.

They overpriced Tevez during the summer, even though at that point in time he was “Never going to play for city again”.

I like Adam Johnson and think he is a real class player but Newcastle should look elsewhere. Going to be expensive and high wages.

Sorry, I’m still hoping we buy Christian Pasquato.
He is cheap, young, Italian version of HBA. He is right footed LW who can play as playmaker at center midfield.
I’m not too worried about our defense, especially if get Douglas, we have so many good youngsters like Streete, Tav, Fergie. I would rather give them more chances than buying another defenders, we only need Douglas or any other CB, it will also help money spent on wages.
If we do sign Douglas, we will have in defense (if noone leaves):
Saylor,Colo, Simo,Willo, Perch, Santon, Raylor, Tav, Fergie, Jonas (who can play LB or RB), Streete, Santon.
That is 12 defenders in total, 13 if we signed Douglas.
I can’t imagine how great it will be if sign Pasquato.
Then we just need 1 or 2 strikers, because I have a feeling that Ba is going to leave. We really need LW imo, can’t rely on Marveaux as he is injury prone.

    This is Pasquato:

    LW 1st team/bench
    CM Bench/1st team potential
    CF Bench

and then more high quality younger lads to break in a year or so on

I don’t understand why Huntelaar (28yr old) is too old? Yes, he is just 2 year older than our policy, but I don’t think that is too old for any team. Even Colocini and Jonas are older than him and do great job for us, we are struggling without them. If Nesta is not planning to retire next season, I would choose Nesta over anyone as CB, Messi couldnt do a thing when Nesta played. Maldini played until 40 and he is still the best LB in the world for me. I don’t really care much about age.

Lads, just because he looks great playing for Swansea doesn’t mean he will di the same here… The reason he is on loan is coz he couldn’t get into the starting line up of his parent club..swansea play a different brand of football to us… (this is the same situation any Carroll found himself in) and how many goals has Nolan scored for westham??? I say no to this lad, coz we got vucik and I would rather have corgnet who is half as expensive..hell for 8 mill put in a bid for Marvin martin… I hope we don’t buy this lad…

Santon will be 1st team LB at any team, only in NUFC he is not good enough? Santon’s left foot is as good as his right foot, there are things that “left footed only” LB can’t do. Maldini was right footed LB, I guess he wouldn’t be good enough in NUFC 1st team.

Imagine Ben arfa with Santon overlapping. Dangerous.

Huntelaar is a good shout, but to expensive rumour has it that he has a 17 mill buy out clause…
The reason he is too old is because he has no resale value.. I see people on this blog shouting out for berba and Huntelaar but U got to remember the ethos of our team…at Swansea there was a period in the game when cisse and ba were playing right or was it left back…and cisse had a big smile on his face… He was happy to defend..wud berba be?? Would Huntelaar be?? U got to remember that part of our success has come from the unity and togetherness of the team… That’s the reason I do not want those players at our club… But I agree with you..class is permanent and age is irrelevant…

we stuck with Enrique when he was average at best and look how that turned up…we are not a complete side like barca/man city Madrid etc..we are an up and coming team..therefore our players are up and coming too….if we show faith in them…they will bond and gel..and that’s when we will become a complete team…thats why we bought cabaye cisse…etc…have faith…buy good backup yes..but dnt replace santon…we need him to play loads of games to get experienced at this level..just like we did with Enrique

He has problem with adjusting with our system. He likes bombing forward like when he played for Inter, the difference is in Inter they have DM covering when he goes forward, here he has Jonas covering, but Jonas also likes to go forward. That’s why we have problem with LB, not because he is not a good LB, he needs time to work with his LM. Lately, he didn’t bomb forward too often anymore.

I don’t think he would mind do a little bit defending, he is a striker after all, a target man. He wouldn’t do much good if he stayed at the back, as a target man he has to stay at front.

    Howdy fella’s!!!

Firstly i think Sigurdsson is just the type of player we need to go for. He’s young, dynamic and withing the price bracket we should be spending on players. Gone are the days of hefty transfer fees at NUFC but on the other hand we cant rely on free transfers and out of contracts. You have to speculate to accumulate!!

Secondly, and ive seen this on another feed, is anyone else absolutley gob-smacked that Tim Krul didnt get a nomination for PFA young player? The lad is the new Van Der Sar and has won us at least 10 games this year!! Madness.

Thirdly, ive just returned form a jaunt to Italy and can also re-itterate that, while there, i did not see a Mackem in Milan!!

PS Glad to see your on the mend Ed!!
