Newcastle Still Tracking 20 Year-Old French Winger

8:58 am, Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 38 Comments

Newcastle are going to be linked with a lot of players over the summer.

Newcastle still interested in 20 year-old Anthony Knockaert

We have already been linked with many players since January, and we’re trying to keep a list of them, but of course very few of the stories will actually have anything behind them.

Some news today is that Newcastle are interested in 20 year-old French midfielder Anthony Knockaert, who currently plays for Guingamp in the French second division.

The news is in talkSPORT,  and this is not the first time we’ve been linked with the player, and our records show there were reports Newcastle were interested in him, back in early December of last year.

Anthony has so far played 10 times for the French U20 side with four goals, and of course Newcastle have had great success over the last year or so,  with players imported from the French leagues.

One advantage is that Anthony would settle in very quickly at Newcastle, and we assume that Graham Carr has been scouting the lad, and Newcastle could bring him in over the summer as one for the future, much like they did with young Mehdi Abeid last summer.

Guingamp are currently 12th of 20 sides in the French league and have been slumping since December, when they were 3rd top of the division.

There are many clubs said to be tracking the youngster,  but Newcastle’s name in France at the moment is right at the very top, so Newcastle could still be in with a good chance, if they want to bring the lad to Tyneside.

Anthony signed for Guingamp from Lesquin in 2009, and has appeared 62 times for the French club with 14 goals since then.

His contract runs out in the summer of 2013, and the new news is that Montpellier, who are currently top of the the French League with 66 points, two points clear of PSG, seem to be leading the chase for the youngster.

That’s according to reports in France, but there are many other clubs said to be tracking the top youngster.

Anthony is 5’9″ tall, and the right-footed player usually plays out on the right wing, and he is almost certain to leave Guingamp this summer.

Comments welcome.

So if Chelsea do win the champions league and finish outside the top four and we finish fourth what do we get?

  • 2 redondo77 // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:02 AM

I think these rumours are just diversions on who NUFC really after

  • 3 Papiss_Myself // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:08 AM

Jonny. If Chelsea win the Champions League 4th spot becomes a Europa League position.
    So……VIVA BARCELONA

  • 4 Tsunki // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:09 AM

@ 2 – think there are a lot of these!

  • 5 pieceofpapiss // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:12 AM

This lad is lightning! seen him a few time at Guincamp and has on hell of a delivery on him. Little bit lightweight, as most wingers are, but given that yard of space he can produce the goods.

As i posted on a previous thread, he’s the type of player we can look at now. Young, Dynamic and sub £10 million. Speculate to accumulate.

  • 9 Rotonda heights // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:15 AM

it would be just our luck to finsh 4th and Chelsea win the CL!!! Nightmare scenario

  • 10 Papiss_Myself // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:15 AM

As for this guy, I’m not sold on him. Think we can do better if we want to compete in Europa or Champions League.

Love our French players but I would like to see a couple of British players signed as well. Say for example Johnson who has plenty of skill and experience. But on that same note probably has a mahoosiv wage packet.

Guess only time will tell but in Pardew and Carr we trust.

Would be nice to think we could keep our top players come summer though. i.e Tiote, Ba, Krul. No player is bigger than the club and isn’t replaceable but they have been key to our success this season and would be missed.

    Tsunki

In January, there are a lot of rumours especially Erdincq. Suddenly without rumours or any news at all we signed Papis Cisse. I think we gonna do that again this summer.

  • 15 obatoyou // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:26 AM

good point redondo77, responding to speculation about transfers can seem moot
but we might as well know who we might be getting and how they will help us win the champions league
i think we might buy ronaldo or messi next season, only 80 or 100m pounds, but its worth it for the champions league.

  • 16 iamnufc // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:26 AM

Guys what you reckon tonite’s score will be?
Think cfc will win but barca to go through over the 2 leagues.

  • 17 obatoyou // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:30 AM

played too much football manager in my time :S
cant appreciate football for what it really is, the players are just a value to me, can anyone help me with this problem, i need to appreciate football for what it is again, its hard not being able to watch as many games as theyre in the middle of the night here in australia

  • 18 Wor Shearer // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:31 AM

    Chelsea 2 (Mata ’64), (Drogba ’77) – Barca 3 (Messi ’6), (Messi ’34), (Messi ’90+)

  • 19 obatoyou // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:32 AM

i think messi will be distracted by his recent talks with nufc, he’ll be jittery with anticipation, so he might only score 2 penalties instead of 3

  • 20 Dannyo // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:32 AM

A must this lad, have been following him since the first time we were linked. Exciting speedster with the cross of death on him.
    Get him in.

  • 21 Wor Shearer // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:35 AM

    @obatoyou

Watch a few reserve games, they’re earlier in the day and you can try and play ‘talent spotter’, you’ll then see what makes a good player compared to the 80-90% rubbish.

  • 22 lesh // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:36 AM

Oba @6, surely if Chelski won the European Cup and we were fourth, we’d surely qualify as there’d be a slot to be filled. Winners autmatically qualify and that has no bearing on the 4 places available in the Prem??

  • 23 Ben3arfa // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:37 AM

So who is better this kid or Amalfitano? doubt we would try to sign both

  • 24 Ben3arfa // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:38 AM

    better player*

  • 25 pieceofpapiss // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:40 AM

    Speculate to Accumulate.

You have to spend money if your going to win anything. The reason why WIgan, Wolves etc are at the bottom and NUFC, Manure, Citeh and Chelski are at the top.

  • 26 keeleytoon // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:41 AM

bbc have linked us with sigurddson, apparently pardew is descreetly talking about him, seems to have a good season so far, never seen this guy though, any one got links of him playing?

  • 27 Wor Shearer // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:41 AM

    @obatoyou

Each country has a fixed amount CL spaces. England gets 4. If Chelsea win the CL (which I very much doubt) and automatically qualify (as you mentioned) then the top three in the league + chelsea (regardless of their finishing position) will go through. The fourth place finisher in the league will be given a Europa spot instead.

  • 28 LewSpi // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:42 AM

I’m also trying to keep a list of the players we’ve been linked with since Feb 1st, needless to say its bulked out a fair bit since lasts week, the rumours are starting to pick up now.

  • 29 obatoyou // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:45 AM

    @Wor Shearer

Yep that’s what I wrote fella. Here’s my pred.

    Chelsea 2 ( Lampard 8′, Torres 71′) – 0 Barcelona

  • 30 obatoyou // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:48 AM

    @Keeleytoon

    he is really good.

If u havent watched him, watch him on utube or somewhere, he could be one of the best players in the league, or maybe even one of the top players in europe. Probably the best player at the momemt, better than lionel messi, or paul dickov, even better than momo sissoko. Probably one of the greatest players of the modern era, like better than alfredo di stefano probly or maybe better than bruce grobelaar too. I think the best player ever actually, better than a melting pot of maradonna pele and stephen carr (mainly cos they’d be melted). Nah joking, but he’s actially quite good. Nah e sux. nah im kidding dont get so upset ok, look at me, i love you

  • 31 keeleytoon // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:50 AM

@ obatoyou, i’ll check it out mate! You are a funny character aren’t you lol i think the scores tonight will be 1-1 between chelsea and barca, gut feeling! i think chelsea will give a solid performance tonight, as much as i don’t want them to win the champions league, as if we get 4th we’d lose it…

  • 32 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:56 AM

1 nil Barca. Fabregas to score.

  • 33 Paps // Apr 18, 2012 at 9:58 AM

I don’t think we should always look to buy young cheap players with potential. Although we’ve done well so far will Cabaye, Tiote etc, we need to start buying established players for the europa or champions league. Especially in defence.

  • 34 Paps // Apr 18, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Also, I don’t think we should have too many attacking midfielders. People like Guti and his work ethic deserve to keep his place.

  • 35 lloydie780 // Apr 18, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Anyone know what has happened to our current youn French winger who was apparently going to become a really good player – Yven Moyo? Seems to have vanished and even stuggles in the reserves. Anyone seen or heard of how he is getting on?

  • 36 Rotonda heights // Apr 18, 2012 at 10:43 AM

    Paps.

Cabaye has won the french league 4 times and Tiote is nearly 26!!!

  • 37 LooneyToon41 // Apr 18, 2012 at 2:32 PM

    @25.
    “Speculate to Accumulate.
You have to spend money if your going to win anything. The reason why WIgan, Wolves etc are at the bottom and NUFC, Manure, Citeh and Chelski are at the top.”

The Old ‘Speculate to Accumulate” analogy. If ever there was a more purile, misguided, defenceless and idiotic phrase ever used in football, then i don’t know what it is.

Leeds,Bradford,Sheffield Wed, Rangers, Ipswich,Portsmouth,Notts Forest, Palace, DONCASTER, plus..

    West Ham, Villa, Liverpool, QPR???

If West Ham don’t go up, and QPR get relegated this season, lets see where ‘speculate to accumulate’ leaves them in the next 2 years…

  • 38 mickg108 // Apr 18, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Think the player is Mayo lloydie 780,,sur he got injured,,may be wrong m8.
