With Newcastle likely to be in the Europa League at least for next season, it’s probably a good idea not to talk about new contracts for players until the club knows exactly what the situation will be for next season.
Danny Guthrie – wants Newcastle to buy this summer
That’s because there’s even a chance that Newcastle will be in the Champions League, and with the new money coming in, the club may be able to offer some of their players better deals than they could in January.
Thta’s true for players like Danny Guthrie, Danny Simpson and Demba Ba, but Newcastle had better be very quick, once they know for sure which European competition we will be in, to offer their players new deals.
Other clubs are closely watching the situation, especially with Demba Ba, and will be ready to pounce quickly in the summer.
Danny Guthrie’s four year contract he singed when he arrived in the summer of 2008 from Liverpool, runs out this summer, and we really hope the 24 year-old will stay on Tyneside, and he certainly seems to be excited about Newcastle’s future.
This is what he had to say yesterday about Newcastle strengthening the squad in the summer:
“We will have to build in the summer.” “Every team gets stronger in the summer, so we will have to keep up.”
“If we get a top-six finish then the next season is always important, as you don’t want to fall below the standards you have set.”
“There’s a good vibe around the changing room and a good spirit, as has been shown on the pitch.”
“A couple of lads have come in who haven’t spoken English, but they’ve been made to feel very welcome.”
Guthrie has been out injured with a calf problem but he should be fit for Saturday’s home game against Stoke City.
Newcastle could be signing up to five players this summer, and here are just some of the players the club has already been linked with since January, in no particular order:
Virgil van Dijk – FC Groningen’s young 19 year-old Dutch defender
Romain Amalfitano – Stade Reims 22 year-old attacking midfielder
Douglas Franco Teixeira – known as Douglas – 24 – FC Twente
James Tomkins 23 – West Ham
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – captain of French club Montpelier – 22
Jan Vertonghen – 23 – played for Belgium 35 times and he stands 6’3? tall
Benjamin Corgnet – French attacking midfielder – 24 – Dijon – £4.5M?
Cheikh M’Bengue – Toulouse and Senegal left back
Erik Pieters PSV – Dutch left back
Jacob Butterfield – 21 year-old Barnsley central midfielder
Adam Maher – 18-year-old AZ Alkmaar midfielder
John Guidetti – 19-year-old Man City striker – on loan to Feyenoord
Mathieu Debuchy – Lille 26 year-old right back
Juan Pablo Pino – 25 – Columbian winger/striker – Galatasaray
Gylfi Sigurdsson – Hoffenhein attacking midfielder – loan at Swansea
Anthony Knockaert – Guingamp 20 year-old midfielder
Of those listed above, the two top favorites to join Newcastle this summer could be Douglas and Erik Pieters, although Erik has sustained a hairline fracture of his foot, which could keep him out of the European Championships this summer.
So we have to think Danny will get his wish, and Newcastle will significantly strengthen the squad for next season – we hope so anyway.

& a 22, 23 y.o. non african striker (id look into situation with Tim Matavz (PSV)..tall,young, fast, great finisher..already scored over 20 goals this season, but ever since phillip cocu became manager he always starts on bench..
oh & if ba leaves, sign a.johnson, but get him to the fitness for a few months first..once he builds up he’ll be unstoppable..

Comment #3With all the hype about Erik Pieters I am yet to be fully convinced he’s worth it. I am certain there are better LBs out there. Even though he’s Holland’s LB and is good mates with Krul, I still feel he doesn’t offer much and we could do better. I was very impressed with that Brazilian LB that we were linked with recently-Ed you forgot to mention him. His name is Bruno Bertucci and bombs forward and is a major threat, is a good tackler and is naturally left footed.
Check him out; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmcxgEgGmc0&feature=player_embedded#!

Comment #7There is adifferent name appearing on here every day!
@3:
JP…..!
I have never ever rated Pieters and could never understand
why people were screaming on here for us to sign him!
Living here in Holland i get the chance to watch him on a weekly basis! He may be a good signing for us but he may also be a flop! The most on here seem to base their interest on him on the fact that he Dutch International is!
His foot is back in Plaster, by the way, Out for the rest of the season!
And your perfectly correct, there are better players available!
Another we won,t be getting is Bas Dorst!
He is in advance talks with FC Wolfsberg ! Our interest in this player is a mystery to me too!
He scores one hatrick against a below average club across here and all of a sudden we want to sign him !
There are a lot of players across here i would go for before this lad Dorst!

Comment #8The list I have just read says to me, we will not get any of those players. The last 3 or 4 windows every signing has been a surprise. It appears to be a smoke screen to keep other clubs from sniffing around who we really want.
– can’t help but get sucked into the hype though.
