As expected Robin van Persie’s last night (Sunday) earned the PFA Player of the Year award, but the really good news was that the Newcastle captain, Fab Coloccini, was named in the PFA Team of the Year.
Fabricio Coloccini – named in PFA team of the year
Van Persie leads the Premier League goal scoring charts with 27 goals, but with Wayne Rooney’s two goals against Everton yesterday, the Manchester United striker is right behind the Dutchman with 26 goals, and then Aguero of Manchester City is on 22 and three players are on 16, including Newcastle’s Demba Ba.
Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker, who made his England debut under former manager Fabio Capello, took the Young Player award.
And both Walker and Van Persie were named in the PFA Team of the Year, which included four Manchester City players and players from only six clubs.
But the good news is that the Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was named in central defense alongside Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, and the only real surprise is Everton’s Leighton Baines at left back, although Baines has had an excellent season for Everton, and maybe he’s a better left back than Ashley Cole these days.
Perhaps those Argentine selectors will now sit up and take note, since our captain is a top center-back and the only Argentine to make the team, but there again we don’t really mind that he’s not playing for his country right now.
When Fab joined Newcastle in August of 2008 from Deportivo for just over £10M, he said he thought he could become a top Premier League center-back.
And after a rough first season, which saw Newcastle get relegated for the first time ever from the Premier League, he has indeed proved he’s one of the best players in the best football league in the world.
Fab has turned out to be wonderful buy for the Magpies, and he’s been so loyal to Newcastle, and we’re just glad this player will be on Tyneside for the next four years.
Well done Fabricio – you are a credit to yourself, to Newcastle United and to Argentina.
