Is This Top Player Being Priced Out Of A Move To Newcastle?

Newcastle have been linked recently with Hoffenheim’s on loan midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has been playing well for Swansea since early January.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – impressive on loan at Swansea – but priced at £10M

In fact Newcastle were linked with the player when he was still at Reading, back in May of 2010, before he moved to the German club for around £6.5M

Gylfi looked a very good player for Reading since he signed for them back in the summer for their Youth Academy from Icelandic club Breiðablik.

He made his debut in August of 2008 and played 51 games for Reading with 23 goals before moving to Germany.

The news now is that Hoffenheim will let the player move in the summer but for £10M, and it could be there will be an auction between the interested clubs.

Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United and Newcastle are all credited with an interest in the Icelandic international, but we don’t think Newcastle will want to participate in an auction.

And with Liverpool involved, they could come in with a £15M offer, if their dealing in the transfer market over the last 16 months are anything to go by.

But Newcastle could still go after this lad, and pay the big bucks to get him on Tyneside, because he looks an excellent player and has 7 goals for Swansea in just 15 appearances.

And at only 22, he will only get better as he plays more games in the Premier League.

Swansea’s on-loan star has been outstanding since joining in early January from German club Hoffenheim.

The news is that Kenny Dalglish, Everton coach Jimmy Lumsden and Red Devils scout Martin Ferguson watched Sigurdsson play very well against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Swansea want to sign the player themselves,. but they couldn’t match the other big clubs for the high fee now being asked for the player, who was born in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland – try pronouncing that.

Newcastle were willing to pay our £8M for Papiss Cisee and he looks a great player, and worth much more than that now, so maybe Newcastle will still go after the 7 times capped Iceland International if they are really interested.

It also seems that Sigurdsson is a favorite with the Hoffenheim fans, but he as not getting enough playing time in the Bundesliga, which is why he was sent out on loan, and also to get fully fit following injury.

This lad will be in big demand, and he certainly seems to have class, and he’s been called the next Frank Lampard,  because of his goal-scoring ability from central midfield, and Lampard has been some club player in his sparkling career.

What do you think?

Cant see Liverpool getting this one the Yanks have had their fingers burnt too many times this season. They have already told Dogleash to cut the wage bill.Just watch other Premiership teams follow Toons example & stop paying overated players huge wages.

Addition to above blog remember this player is on loan at Swansea & i dont think a part exchange would come into it unless the parent club wanted to accept the player on offer as part of any deal

I think Dogleash will mainly have to sell to buy. Although I can’t believe his budget will be £0.

Think that Carr would have better players in his sights if we were going to shell out £10 million (which I don’t think Ashley will).
Like Sweendog says – if it’s down to around £6 mill. we may just be interested.
Can’t understand if he’s so good, though, why Hoffenheim don’t play him and are happy to let him go?

Every club will be looking at him and his value will be inflated. He’s a fantasy football signing. Perfect for Liverpool!

When was the last time we bought someone so obvious? Not gonna happen…

He’s looked great in a lot of the time an average looking swansea team! Well worth snapping up!

    Sigursson 10mil
    Hoilett. Free
    Douglas. Free
    Pieters. 5mil

Those 4 players for 15 mil would b amazing summer business I think!

davybtoon@12 – Because we can get people like Cabaye for £4.5million and Tiote for not much more.
A top, top free-scoring forward like Papiss doesn’t grow on trees and they don’t come cheap.

And Ashley goes for players with resale value. If we could have had him for £4m last summer, then maybe. But his value will be inflated now. How many players have come over to the Premier League and been amazing to begin with but then have been found out and disappeared…

Dogleash left liverpool in a mess the last time he walked, this time it will be a total disaster for the next manager to pick up, its all good stuff, looking forward to winning at Anfield next year, will be so sweet.

As for the Swansea lad, pretty gud, but would sooner get somebody in with burning pace, he couldnt get into our side currently. Cisse 8million Siggurdson 10 million, doesnt seem like good business, need to give Abeid, Vuckic, young Sammi a go, plus Marveaux is back, sooner buy 2 world class defenders and a gud young striker – Jay Ridriguez wud be gud

I agree with check. We have such a dearth or talent coming through I don’t see the need in splashing out ten million on him. At all. Seems a good player but I think we should stick to the recipe that has brought us here.

I’d agree with most posts. He’s a good player, but he would need to be ‘Value for money’ with a potential greater sell on fee. £10m is just too much. Remember we didn’t buy Cisse in the summer when the price was £15m!

We need to take into consideration that Liverfool paid 35Mil for Carroll ! Any transfer speculation regarding this player is just that Speculation!

If Dogleash wants him for 15Mil then let them have him! He,s a good player okay and would be a good signing for us! But 15 Mil is way over priced for him!
Hoffenheim are having problems with their finances as are many clubs in Germany and for that matter in Holland and France too ! If we got him, then 7mIL would be a more realistic price.

Totally disagree with you about Douglas! You watched one match! Try watching him for a whole season and then criticise him after that if you want! If we went for him he won,t come till august anyway because of his naturalisation and Dutch Nationality situation! Think you,ve based your post on just one match! You would probably prefer Pieters with his Club Foot! Which will more than likely never heal!

Guys, this fella Sigurdsson is not rated at all in Germany!

If you listen to the press from Germany they are shocked the guy is a success at Swansea!

Have we better players already at the club?

It took ages of mad haggling to get Cisse to come to Newcastle, even though they were looking at him as Newcastle’s next number 9 striker.
Usually I would say not a chance. But IF we do get 3rd or 4th and Chelsea don’t win the Champions League, then we will have a huge boost in transfer finance. CL is supposed to be worth around 25-30 million, and the boost of league positions, worth roughly 850k a place. That would potentially give Newcastle 35 million for players, and plenty space with the amount of players leaving.
If it does become a bidding war, Newcastle still won’t win, but it does mean that Newcastle can afford to go after players linked with other clubs, which is a massive bonus.

I,ve no doubt G,Carr & his scouts have dossiers on the players we would like to have & those we are likely to get.So just lets enjoy whats left of our fantastic season & not speculate on who has supposed to have signed for the any case it cant happen until the transfer window opens
