Newcastle Finally Back Among The Big Boys Again

With Everton only drawing at Manchester United yesterday, Newcastle are now guaranteed a place in the Europa League for next season.

Cheick Tiote – challenging Peter Crouch on Saturday

6th position is now the lowest place Newcastle can finish the season in,  and the FA has already announced that 6th place will get a Europa League spot, so we’re back in Europe next season.

Cheick Tiote has been a stellar buy for the club,  since he was acquired form FC Twente back in August of 2010 for a measly £3.5M (that’s officially classed as peanuts),  and he had this to say today about Newcastle qualifying for European football:

“For a long time the fans have not had European football but now, next season we will be in European competition,” “It is great – it is very important for this football club.”

“It will definitely convince players to stay. It is important. If the team is playing in Europe, it is better for us to keep our best players.”

“It will be difficult to keep our very best players if we are not playing in Europe so to achieve this is good.”  “We have a very good squad here, it is not just about one or two players – it is about the squad.”

“It is OK, if we get into Europe it will be even better. It is great for the club, the fans and for everyone.” “This season we’ve been in very good form from the start.”

“We have won all the important games and that is good for the fans and the team. We must stay true to what we have done all season and keep winning.”

It seems that Newcastle are simply focused on trying to get as many points in the remaining four games, and the squad is not even talking about a possible Champions League position for next season, although that is possible.

One thing that manager Alan Pardew has been very successful at this season, is to keep the players’  feet firmly on the ground, and not get carried away by what may or may not be possible.

Cheick has said the lads are only concentrating on the last four games of the season:

“I don’t think about it yet. We play game after game, we have four games left now. We will try to win every game and then at the end of the season we will see.”

“I don’t think the other Champions League teams fear us yet. There are too many good teams in the Premier League – we still have a lot of games to play and we must do everything we can to win every game.”

“As soon as we start to think we have done it, we will go in bad form and lose one game which could be important. That will happen.”  “For now I am focused on the Wigan game, all of the team are.”

“We are not thinking about Champions League.”  “We talked about doing every thing we could to win and that is what we have to do for the next four games as well.”

“It is very important to keep winning. I think it was one of the best home performances of the season.”   “Yohan is a brilliant player. He has played well all season, he is a key player and has been all season.”

“He can do everything – he scored two goals and I am very happy for him that he scored.”

It’s very important to keep winning, as Cheick says,  and Newcastle need to keep that winning mentality, that all the top clubs have.

They must go into every game with the target being to win the game, and whatever happens during the game, find a way to come out of it with all 3 points.

If we can do that in the last four games of the season, the lads must have a decent chance of making the Champions League next season.

But even if we cannot do it – it will still have been a magnificent season,  in which Newcastle have established themselves back with the big boys again.

lewytoon .. lucky since you can try to buy team players but most footballers these days have huge egos attached .. not with most of our squad.

    haha

i see your still one deluded suporter,

obertan is a million miles away from the level we are playing at right now, and it is well within sholas style to score a goal that will take us there, sholas problem is he does not produce very often against teams like stoke or wigan, he saves it for big games,

the player im looking forward to seeing make some impact as a sub is silvain marvauxe, now there is a player with quality and pace,, could be a great time to let him loose

another thing that is great to see right now is pardew finally has cabaye back in the right end of the pitch, balls are being played through him not over him,

Just been browsing the run in for the last ten minutes, that win over Stoke combined with Spurs’s defeat was huge.

The magic number for us is 9. 9 more points from 12 a no one can overtake us.

If we can get a win over Wigan it would be massive, leave us with 6 needed from 9. After that two draws and one win should be enough considering I doubt Spurs can turn their season around and rattle off four straight wins.

There’s a real possibility if we beat Wigan , don’t lose to Chelsea that we could be facing Man City in a game where a win for us could seal fourth, and anything less than a win for them hands the initiative back to Utd. Mouthwatering

sweendog @9. It has been well documented that as well as their playing ability potential signings are also assessed for their character. Which is supposedly the reason we did not sign Gervinho!

Special K .. unfortunately spurs can if they win 4 out of 4 .. if they drop points in their next game and we beat wigan .. we can starting dreaming of champions league, mind you the small matter of beating 2 out of chelsea A/Man City H/Everton A .. although spurs could drop more points and give us more breathing space

Special K _ good points mate. your calculations would probably see us securing 3rd position to be honest.

What is the worst nightmare in this instance is if Chelski actually win the CL and we “only” finish 4th.

Dont get me wrong, to have already secured Europa at this stage in the season is above everyones expectations, but if we were to finish 4th and do not get CL would be a massive massive blow for our whole team, fans, players, management and board!

    @davybtoon from previous thread.

Mate, I think ur maybe takin what I said to heart. I’m worried that of the right money comes along that MA will sell any of the players u mentioned. Krul, Tiote etc. you cannot say that Enrique was not a top player coz he was, Carroll too. Just coz Liverpool aren’t doin well does not mean we wouldn’t have benefitted with having both of them in this team this season.

Listen, I’m as optimistic as u and everyone from optimism valley, but u can’t say ur sick of people saying we have sold top players and stating the reason is that we haven’t. Because we have. And I firmly believe that if a high bid came in for any more of our top players we may (read MAY) lose any of them.

I think that we now have a team that can compete with anyone and I mean anyone. As this article states were back with the big boys, but if any of the top players leave it COULD destabilise our dressing room. Having said that, in pardew we trust eh?

martoon .. agreed, I’m not doubting Carr’s checks on personality as well as ability .. but its only when they’re up North playing against stoke etc on a wintery night can you tell what their character is like .. so far his judgement has been top notch, but you still need some luck there.

Special k Ive jus said I only consider Chelsea as our main threat to 4th, spurs r gone, if there’s still a 4pt gap when we go to Chelsea a win wud mean we wud b 7clear with 2 to play, I still think 3rd is on arsenal hav stoke away Norwich home WBA away hard games

They could I guess but I can 100% see them dropping points at either Villa or Bolton. If/when they drop those points then two draws and a win will be enough to do it, or if they drop points in both we could even afford a win and a draw to close out the season. Its more than possible alright

Burni .. true we did sell Enrique/Carroll etc .. carroll was a top striker in the making when we sold him as well .. still if we get champions league players don’t want to leave and it’ll take megabucks to get any player which can only be good for the club.
at the moment though every 1st teamer is irreplaceable I’m sure Pardew is telling Ashley this.

I think it’s crazy to think that spurs are out of it. Form admittedly is not with them at present but we have all seen how confidence can turn with a win. They have quality players and Qpr was always going to be tough at their ground. Do any of you remember when we played them? Impossible to find space on such a match box pitch.

I believe that Chelsea will falter as they have too much to think about and too hard a run in…but to be honest I’ve been saying that for a while now and they still continue to get results. of all the teams around us, spurs have the easiest run in by a country mile. I’m as optimistic and delighted as anyone but this is far from over.

What worries me is – ol’ redface needs a replacement for Scholes.

Yohan could double his salary and MA could bring in £25 million.

And Yes, I DO value Yohan at more than that.

Just want to keep ALL the players – worth so much to us to keep the team together.

Worried about summer transfers though ! And hoping Ashley does,nt cash-in too much!

You are right of course but if we do get nine points and spuds suddenly recover some form then they can match our points and will be above us because of goal difference.

I do not know why so many are trying to work out all the points permutations as it is as simple as this, as long as we match the results of the two teams below us we will make the champs league.

If they win all their remaining games then we have to win all ours, if they drop a game then we can afford to drop a game, no complications it is a simple as that.
