Newcastle Hoping To Keep Their Top Players This Summer

3:38 pm, Monday, April 23rd, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 195 Comments

Newcastle fans will be looking forward to the summer transfer window,  because we should see up to five top players come through the door, to bolster the squad for next season.

Dreamboat Cabaye – after scoring first goal on Saturday

With European football next season now a certainty,  Newcastle will want to increase the size of their squad, but of course we will also hope we can keep our top players too.

Over the last few days, Manchester City have said they are interested in Papiss Cisse, and Tim Krul, Cheick Tiote  and Demba Ba are also wanted by some of the top clubs this summer.

But we don’t think Mike Ashley will be all that keen to sell this summer, unless some club comes along with a ridiculously high bid for one of our players – like Liverpool did sixteen months ago for big Andy  Carroll.

And with a Europa League place already tied up,  and the possibility that Newcastle can even qualify for the Champions League, for the first time since Bobby Robson got us there in 2003, Alan Pardew is hoping he can keep his star players on Tyneside:

“I am hoping that we get to such a point where there are not really many places above where they can go. That is what we really want.”

“I have played in a very good Crystal Palace side which finished third in this division and I had a very good side at West Ham but  I have not had the camaraderie of this group.”

“I hope that means the players we have got all want to stay and we can do it all again next year, because clubs will look at these players now and try and take them off our hands.”

Cheick Tiote has backed up his manager and he himself is looking for ward to playing in Europe for the first time in his career,  and he thinks being in Europe will convince top players at the club to stay on Tyneside:

“European Football will definitely convince players to stay. If the team is playing in Europe, it is better for us to keep our best players,”

Yohan Cabaye was the star man for Newcastle on Saturday,  and what a buy this lad has been – we got him for just €5M from french Champions Lille – by exercising the release clause in his contract with the French club.

Yohan says that the lads will just keep going – one game at a time:

“We have got big confidence on the pitch. We just want to keep going,” “The next thing is to be focused on the Wigan match. That’s the most important thing.”

“After, we can see what happens, but we have to think match by match. We can do something special for the team.”

The 10 times capped French International, who is likely to start for France against England in the European Championships in June, scored two and made the other one for Newcastle against Stoke, and in 35 appearances for the Magpies he has five goals and nine assists and has been another steal in the transfer market.

Yohan and Cheick are just two of the many good players Newcastle have been able to bring in over the last couple of years, and we are hoping for more coming through the door this summer – which promises to be an exciting time for Geordie fans everywhere.

Its great to see so many of our players come out and say we need to keep other players, signalling their intention to stay here!

  • 2 WWJBD // Apr 23, 2012 at 3:53 PM

Where has City said they are interested in Cisse?

  • 3 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 3:54 PM

Why has nobody come out and said we must do what we can to keep Simmo?

  • 4 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 3:57 PM

    Sorry had to

  • 5 woolerbill // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Simmo is just another full back, nothing special that I can see, If he wants to stay then why not sign now.

  • 6 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:04 PM

cruel but true, should be dropped for Perch.

  • 7 jamesnufc86 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Since when are City wanting Cisse ? I don’t like news like that , it would make sense though , Dzeko will go in the summer and possibly Tevez as well , the lad can’t leave after half a bloody season surely

  • 8 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Danny Simpson is being carried, and nobody even dare mention Goalline Clearences as it makes me feel sick.

  • 9 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Nobody ever wants us to be happy.

The same journos that spout the same shite every day about who we may sell. Be the same for years!

    Cisse ain’t going anywhere

  • 10 jamesnufc86 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Bit harsh on Simpson, works hard but never going to be a world beater – but I wouldn’t say he’s being carried , every member in our squad deserves credit for our position

  • 11 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Some newspaper garbage regarding Cisse, however how could any team not be interested in him, he is a special player. Almost like some sort of footballing Super Hero in my eyes. The Rubber Legged Avenger.

  • 12 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:12 PM

Been harsh on Simpson for a while now, and true he is part of an outstanding effort by the team, but currently he is the one weak link as Big Mike has come back to form and his height is important as seen at the weekend against Lerchio.

  • 13 nightfa11 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:13 PM

i think players will stay.. its better to improve as a team from the “bottom” & challenge for top spots then to just walk into a top side..”look at me im the best”=)

im sure players see we’re building a top side capable of beating just about anyone..

krul is a top keeper, colo world class, santon already one of the best LB (at 20)..cabaye-tiote is the best CM pair in the league & hba, ba & cisse perhaps the best attack in the league..maybe only behind tevez, aguero, silva..we’re a top side already..

just bring a new RB (debuchy), CB (mbiwa or etc) goal scoring midfielder (sigurdsson) & a young non african striker..& if we stay injury free next season..the sky’s the limit.

  • 14 Troleibusiukas_LTU // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:13 PM

Don’t worry no one of our star players will leave, they are loving it at Newcastle. Especially Cisse, Ben Arfa, Krul. Players here are like one big happy family, they see that the grass insnt always greener on the other side and the manager keeps saying this in his ways too. I feel more than confident with transfer window coming. Please don’t worry WE WILL SURELY STRENGTHEN THE SQUAD, not otherwise.

  • 15 liamgowland // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:18 PM

Danny Simpson is a solid Premier League full back. If we want to get to Champions League level, then Simpson will need to be replaced. This is obvious.

He’s done a great job this season and played every game if I remember rightly, so lets leave the stick towards him, eh?! It’s boring.

  • 16 Londtoon // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:21 PM

Say we finish 5th would we have to play any qualifying games in the summer prior to the group stages of the europa league or is it those who qualify through domestic cups? or none of the above?

  • 17 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Hope Man City go and Rape and Pillage Arsenal for RVP and Tottenham for Modric, also wud be nice if Bale moved to Spain, would all of a sudden make our competition a bit weaker for next year.

Chelski will have the same problems they have had this, John Terry, Lampard and Cole, Drogba all past their best and all too influential in how the team performs. I believe that this year is no flash in the pan and next year there is no reason why we cant be best of the rest behind Man Utd/Man City.

Personally think Mourinho will be in charge of City next year and although i dislike the guy, it will mean that City will win the league for sure.

Next years predictions are Chelsea sack another manager, maybe Di Matteo, Liverpool sack Dogleash, Man Utd start to struggle (the end of an era), Arsenal struggle without RVP and Spuds finish Mid table. Newcastle have nice steady year with a 3rd place finish and Papiss Cisse scores 40 PL goals. Plus a hat-trick in the FA cup Final.

  • 18 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:25 PM

I am stating my intention to give Simmo no more stick until the end of season, hopefully he will move on in the summer, good luck until then Simmo, you average full back.

  • 19 ToonHeart // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:28 PM

If we were at the bottom of the table at this time of the season then it’s a possibility players would leave to goto a “better” club.
With us being so good what’s the point with going anywhere else?
All our players are new and come into form so quickly. The potential of us next season will be something not to be missed!

I believe this season is NUFC changing for the good. We just had to prove ourselves we can get far with what we got. Now players are going to want to sign for us without the push.
I have no worries about any player leaving.
Personally, I like Simpson but I couldn’t care less if he leaves because I know we will find a better replacement!

might happen, but i dont think man united will struggle..they bought kids & next year will be better, not to mention fergie will spend another 50 mio in the summer.. man utd will struggle when fergie retires… some say mourinho will replace him which would also mean jose to man city is a no go..we’ll see..

i do agree its the end of tottenham..& wenger will probably sell RVP & Szczesny for 30 mio.. (he sold henry for 24 & vieira for 20:D) & replaced them with alliadiere & robinson

Just was on Sky’s Transfer News section & they’ve linked us to a 21 year old Dutch, Second Stiker/Winger called Jerson Cabral, here’s the wikipedia page for him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerson_Cabral could be a prospect if we miss out on Hoilett & if Zaha is still too pricey

  • 27 keeleytoon // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:41 PM

  • 28 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Regarding Simmo how do we know it was nufc fans that abused him on twitter?

It’s so easy to set up an account and have a go at footballers.

To say we may have drove him out is ludicrous.

    Anyway back to important matters.

Will Ba score against Wigan? I’ve remained silent as of late about the big mans lack of goals but I’ve got a funny feeling we are really going to turn it on against the latics!

Ba to score 4! I’m putting a tenner on.

  • 29 magpie6699 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:47 PM

Cheers for that result / info.

  • 30 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:49 PM

If we want Hoilett I reckon he is ours to be fair.

At nufc he will get game time and a chance to shine at any of the other teams he will get rusty on the bench.

The kid is a wonder and we have sold nufc to bigger names than his before and I’m sure he’d be excited about Europe and the chance to form the deadliest 4-3-3 in the leauge.

    Tasty

  • 31 WWJBD // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:50 PM

    Beattie
No one can prove that Simmo was abused by mags but judging by the abuse he gets on public blogs its not a big stretch to assume its true, plus a lot of the accounts that did it are still running

On Ba I think if we get a comfortable lead he will be moved into the striker position just like he was against Stoke and he should get a goal when there but I wouldnt bet on him getting that many haha also dont think we will run through Wigan like a lot are (again) suggesting the home game there were touts of 6+ nil to us and they took us to the wire with the only thing to break them down was a lovely assist and a wonderful Cabs strike…now they are on a far better run of form full of confidence fighting for their PL satus and its in their own back yard

We should win but I think it will be close

  • 32 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Does anyone else get the feeling that nufc is changing the face of world football?!

The players we sign don’t seemed to be governed by money and they love their football which is refreshing in this climate of modern day football.

Players have forgotten thier identities and have been swallowed up by the gigantic wages and earnings whilst their talents waste away. Nufc is such an attractive opportunity to play football that I wouldn’t he surprised to see some big names joining soon on unspectacular wages!

    Hwtl

  • 33 Tiote4PM // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:54 PM

Stats say Simpson is the best RB in the premier league.

Some people on here don’t value consistency and want spectacular.

I cannot think of a RB I would have over Simpson apart from the lad a Tottenham – anyone got 15 million?

Proven, young and consistent – why not just say thank you and be quiet.

  • 34 nufc786 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:54 PM

i was on an lfc blog.. this guy posted this
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm wud you either win 2 cups and a maybe top 10 finish or be in the position of the barcodes which is 4th on 62 points 3 points ahead of spurs and 3 behind arsenal? personally 2 cups is quite good but the league campagin is embarrasing
so id go for 4th plus i actually watch the barcodes against stoke.? how come we didnt get cabaye and cisse? they were magnificent plus downing or arfa? arfa

wait this is the money they got from carroll uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we cud have got these players if it was wasnt for oh wait thats right.
need to hack in to graham carr’s account

funnnily he was called scouser in denile

  • 35 blew // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:55 PM

I watched the reserve game today against Liverpool and I can see why there has been a clear out in summer. Standard of football was very poor, cant see any of them remotely ready to step up. Hence reported activity to strenghten the reserve numbers in summer with potential, which was in shortage today.

  • 36 nufc786 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:55 PM

    and the responses he got

    Ah, hindsight. So magnificent that.

People keep raving about Newcastle. House of cards. Cisse has a conversion rate of 45% (double exclamation point; top strikers are usually around 20-24 on their best season), which isn’t going to last. And his signing has, luckily, coincided with Ba’s drop in form (35 missed chances in a row). Ben Arfa is a classy player and not exactly a secret to anyone, but injured more often than not (yet to total 40 games in a season, average is 31ish), something which has also plagued Ba throughout his career.Newcastle have gambled heavily on players with shoddy records, as is their tradition, and in the long run, it never pays off. Very happy we’re not copying their recruitment policy, regardless of what the results are this particular season.

in reply to scouser in denile

  • 37 nufc786 // Apr 23, 2012 at 4:56 PM

cabaye was a great spot, played for the French champions I believe, so not too unknown, was almost out of contract, a great find.

Cisse has been on loan here, there and everywhere in Europe failing to really settle.
Pardew’s got lucky that he’s just settled immediately and the whole midfield has worked really well at Newcastle. That being said, I do think luck is a sign of a good manager.

Hatem Ben Arfa was at Chelski I believe (?) and he failed to settle / broke his leg if I remember rightly. Think he’s been elsewhere too, again not settling, just clicked into place under Pardew with all these new players and the unsung Guitierrez.

Ba failed his medical at Stoke where Pulis was told his knee was a ticking time bomb. Presumably Newcastle got insurance for him somehow, at the cost of a low buyout price in his contract.

Now Pardew has history bringing through excellent players but even then it didn’t always work out for him at other clubs.

Dimatteo too, did really well with an excellent DoF at West Brom.

But not everyone has worked at Newcastle, Marveaux who we nearly signed has clearly failed and Santon (?) is not really working out yet either.

It just happens that Pardew got a couple of extra signings working in key areas, particularly Cisse and Cabaye.

Kenny got Enrique, Bellamy, Coates and Suarez as immediate benefit. Henderson, Carroll, Downing, Adam not so much.

Now Henderson looked far better today in his preferred position, though not yet dangerous enough. If two of these four were to come good it would make a huge difference.

On the subject of being “lucky” only having the PL to focus on this seaosn (from the previous thread) – I think we’re getting at the same point. This season, as we’ve had a thin squad we’ve only been able to compete in 1 comp. Next year, we’ll be looking to compete in 2 – 4 comps, so will need a bigger squad. The funny thing is about Liverpool is that they will literally have to pay another 200 million to get a decent team!

They are no longer considered a big club by the top players and gone are the days when they could attract a Neymar, Hazard, Gotze etc…

We couldn’t either but at least we are acceptant of the fact!

Funny but I think they will pluit when stevie g leaves!

Suarez will go first. He needs CL and a place with a racist culture.

Fair one on the benchmarking point its probably true atleast from a fans point of view but we have out performed them mostly and am happy with that I could pull their team apart in detail but honestly I dont care enough to and I actually feel a little sorry for the club on a whole considering what they used to be and how its going now even though I cant stand them

Still trophy for us next year? What chances are people giving us?

I would go as far to say that we are tailor made for the urfa cup (europa leauge). It’ll be hard be we have a certain continental quality oozing throughout the team with a typically British stubbornness!

Obviously we will only compete in that cup when we have been eliminated from the CL after a group of death featuring bayern, Ac Milan and real Madrid! We will be eliminated without loosing a game and due to an unfairly disallowed goal at the bernabeau.

On our way to lifting the euopa leauge we will give the bin dippers a good stuffing!!

Zabletta, Richards, Johnson, Sagna, rafael, Ivanovic, Boswinga all are ten times the players simspon is and thats just names that pop into my head without looking deeply at all the right backs.

Oh and as for the scousers i have many mates who are liverpool fans and the majority of them compliment us this year and talk about what great players the likes of cisse, Afra and Cabaye are.

Think the ones who posted the above comments are just looking for ways of making themselves feel better about the state of their club currently.

    From a mackem on Facebook:

“Y’know if Sunderland were 4th in the league and chasing 3rd I’d be over the moon and the last thing I’d be thinking of was going on like a prize bellend on twitter or here like a lot of their moronic fans, players and ex players…but they’re not obsessed, not bothered, don’t care about us”

A bit like we’ve approached this season, if we’re still in it towards the end, go all out. Seems to have worked to date, so why not.

Enough slagging Simmo. He is under-rated and we need to have players like him who can deliver week in week out.
I’d be real disappointed if he left us for a second rate team….

  • 81 Tsunki // Apr 23, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Just back from Abroadland today and of course way too late to join in the revelries of the Stoke match. Just FYI, though you don’t want to know I can tell, I got to see it in two different bars and with many very cold beers. Still a poor excahnge for my first missed home game of the season, but I did get to cup my ear and say ‘who?’ to a group of stoke fans doing their ‘Red & White Army’ trip, whislt walking away without looking back.. We are starting to look like a team that other top teams groan about when they see us in their fixture list. After the nervy first ten minutes of weighing up I genuinely felt sorry for the potters who were woefully overwhelmed by facing a team of sharks in their own pool. That is why Pulis said all that total rot about them being in the game and in with a chance etc, so as not to demoralise them with the plain truth, we are a division above their talent grade. can’t blame him for doing his job, whatever that is & poor though that might be.

Are we still criticising Simmo? Dear oh dear, never satisfied…. Man City will be a cup final imo as hey stil have it all to play for when they meet us, whatever happens in their derby scuffle. If we actually draw with Citeh, at home, Everton will be a CL spot match for a certainty, maybe by then it will already be sealed? Got to dream….

  • 82 bills-son // Apr 23, 2012 at 6:51 PM

    Cisse £35M
    Krul £25M
    Tiote £25M
    Cabaye £25M
    HBA £25M

I believe offers will not even be considered – never mind accepted – unless they reach the figures above.

Apart from Ba – if the release clause ie true – I don’t see any of our six special players above going because I can’t see any club offering what Ashley would want. If Cisse keeps scoring Citeh or ManU just might offer £35M+ but even then I think it might take £40/£45M for Ashley to sell – and then ONLY if we have a top repacement lined up.

It is a very clever strategy of Ashley’s to say “every player has his price”. He learnt that from the AC situation where he genuinely did not want to sell but in the end couldn’t refuse LFools ridiculous offer. Accepting that offer made fans call him a ‘liar’ but he won’t fall for that again hence “every place has his price”.

Fans – and journos – who believed that meant we were a selling club ie., any decent offer accepted, are totally wrong.

We aren’t a selling club – under Ashley we are a club hell bent on being successfully on and off the pitch. I keep saying – Ashley has far more ambition for NUFC than any other previous owner. We are lucky to have him.

  • 84 Tsunki // Apr 23, 2012 at 6:57 PM

bills-son – Exactly – how do you think Ashley made his fortune? By knowing what is a good buy and a good sale. It’s what he does. He also knows when it’s a seller’s market, and with Euro football, he has all the commodities other teams want, and to prise them from his fat little fingers will take cold hard cash. Will other teams buckle under the pressure to deliver to their shareholders. They might, but it will cost dearly when they do. He he.

THis slagging of Simmo is a joke.

The same fans slagged Ba at the start of the season, Pardew mid season, Perch all season until the last 6-8 games and now – because the other three can’t be croticised now – the patsy is Simmo.

  • 91 bills-son // Apr 23, 2012 at 7:04 PM

Tsunki – very true and well put.

Ashley is making many owners and managers in the Prem look absolute mugs.

They – and many Toon fans – totally and completely underestimated Ashley. Not only that, they ridiculed and abused him and laughed in his face after we got relegated, sold Carroll and Barton, Nolan and Enrique left is – in their words – heading for relegation.

    Who looks ridiculous now?

Not Ashley but the mugs who underestimated him.

  • 92 check the toastie // Apr 23, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Bills Son – gud post with the Ashley thing, not like you to be backing our owner up, came as quite a shock.

And as for Simpson, i think the lad has gave 100% all year, however lately i have noticed at the match and during the warm up he seems a little disinterested and seems like he has lost all confidence and has put on a bit of timber. I dont think that constitutes an opinion that is clueless, it is how i see it,

If he does not sign a contract in the summer his career has peaked this year, personally i would put him behind players of the past such as Aaron Hughes and Andy Griffin, he will end up in the championship.

  • 93 Rotonda heights // Apr 23, 2012 at 7:09 PM

  • 94 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 23, 2012 at 7:10 PM

Bills-son…I think it’s a step too far to say all of “those “mugs” who underestimated him”, as that was most toon fans, pundits and well, anyone with an opinion.

He didn’t handle the early days exceptionally well, but he was also learning the ropes with a football club. The important thing is that everyone recognizes the improvements and moves on. It’s time to support the team, manager and the board. We’re starting some exciting stuff at SJP and it would be ridiculous not to realise that

  • 95 bills-son // Apr 23, 2012 at 7:11 PM

    On transfers this summer …

I think Best will be sold and replaced by a young 20-22 year old striker who is ready for the first team but understudy to Ba and Cisse.

I think we’ll sign a defensive midfield player as cover for Tiote + possibly one more CM player if Guthrie goes.

We’ll sign a CH and a full back – probably Pieters – and I think another keeper if Forster leaves. It is clear Harper is not considered a first team squad player now.

We may also 2-4 young players in the 18-20 age range.

    Thats my call.

This has been a great season for us and its getting more exciting in its final days.

The battle of Manchester is not over and could get very exciting.

We have left Liverpool and Everton eating our dust and are comfortably in Europe with a chance at top 4.

Wigan have become a big team bogey.
QPR are fighting for their lives.
    Liverfool are still loosing.

It’s going to be an exciting 4 games.

Stoke was easily one of our best performances of the season.
Tony Pulis said they conceded 3 poor goals in a manner that implied he felt we didnt deserve that win. WRONG.

Good teams score those kind of goals.
Cabayes first goal was a hint of Nolan last season. Right place, right time to pick up those extra goals.
Cisse’s second was a clever pass from Cabaye and showed he can make smart runs and intuitively hit the target.
Cab’s second was a great goal. Saw an opening and took it. Much like Benny at Arsenal.

They may not have been pretty goals but they were goals many team would not have achieved.

One very positive thing about the Stoke game is how we absolutely limited their chances to next to nothing. They had 2 shots on target. That shows a good team.

At the beginning of the season we were winning and drawing games on our defense by small margins. Then we were getting results through shaky defense but a powerful attacking 3.

In the last few games we have finally found that perfect balance in there and had a strong defense that limits opposition chances and a powerful attack that is constantly looking dangerous.

We have been clinical in front of goal (except at Stoke, though Ive always rated Begovic as a good keeper).

Hope we can keep this up. Win against Wigan would go down an absolute treat. Show the big boys how its done

CODARM – the ‘mugs’ comment was more aimed at other owners and managers – I think many Toon fans just hated him, end of.

Can you imagine how smart Daglish and the Yanky owners felt when they got Carroll – and how stupid they feel now that we bought Cabaye, HBA, Tiote, Santon, Ba and Cisse for £10M less than they paid for Carroll?

Add in to that the £50M they paid for Henderson, Downing and Adams + the fact that Pardew is on £500K a year basic and Daglish probably £5M + the fact that we are 16pts ahead of them and heading for at least Europe or possibly £25M+ from the Champs Lge …

And they thought they’d mugged the Toon and Ashley ??!!

    HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!!!

Fans call Ashley a liar because he is i had shares and the level of debt claimed by Ashley did not exist, he was proven to be a liar in court and that is fact. I pray he is trying to build a top side but i think it is a way of getting his money back. Pardew also told a few porkies as Ashley is taking money out of the club (about 30M) a season by leaked documents. All that said everyone at our beloved club has to be congratulated on a top six finish and hopefully better thank you for this season Mike Alan snd co please don’t push us off the cliff like you normally do.

You can definately see that people are strapped for cash. Quite a few small businesses closing down etc. The first question out of any clients mouth for the houses I deal with here is “what’s the lowest price?”, which wasn’t the case a little while back. Seems it’s hit everyone really. But hey, as long as you can keep working and ticking over whilst the toon take on the world, what more could you really ask for?

Ben – Are we one’s to talk about lacking in ambition? ;) It is sad that is there only target, but understandable, I mean, what more do they have to shoot for? First thing I’d want is a different coloured strip :)

That said. Not to be a negger. But just looking at it. We need something special to make Champions league.

Spuds have an easy (on paper) run in
    Blackburn H
    Bolton A
    Villa A
    Fulham H

Think only Fulham will really test Spuds in that. Hoping Blackburn and Bolton have enough fight to stay up to nullify them.

    Chelsea have.
    QPR
    Us
    Liverfool A
    Blackburn H

So we better pray that QPR can beat them again and that Liverfool decide to actually turn up fr once. Maybe their slump will have ended by then. APart from that we have to hope their crowded fixture lists kills them and that Blackburn can again show enough fight to beat them.

Its very important that we win the Chelsea game

MacDonaldtudor – Interesting points. Do you have a link for the leaked info about the payments to Ashley?

At the end of the day, Ashley owning Newcastle United has and always will be about money. He’s not a fan of the club (although that might be changing with some of the football we’re producing!) and already runs a very strict model business in Sports Direct. The truth is the money for Mike is in the club doing well. If we perform well he get’s more money, the players values increase, etc etc. Also, it does become a better product to sell. If that’s the case, i’d still have to say a big thank you for turning around what was frankly a calamity of a club for a while. It needed to be changed and for whatever the reasons, it seems to have

I think Cisse clearly is a top class act. Always smiling. One moment that stuck out and actually made me smile is when he fouled a Stoke player and immediately went over helped him up and was checking he was ok. I like to see that quality in players.

It happened again later on when their player went down (and unlike their players) Santon immediately kicked the ball out of play and the Stoke player was surrounded by Colo, Krul and Willo helping him up, patting him on the back.

Van Persie could learn a thing or two from these guys attitudes. Cant wait for Arsenal to give him a huge contract, for his attitude to worsen and his form to suffer. He has no class

    keeper: Krul (Elliot)

Defence: van der wiel-alderweireld-colo- Santon (Simpson-staylor-willo-raylor)

    DM: Tiote-Jonas (Guthrie-Abeid/Gosling)

AM: Ben arfa – Cabaye – Ba (Cabral – Vuckic – Jarvis)

    ST: Cisse (Post)

And we still have players like: Ferguson, Perch, Kadar, Tavernier, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Leon Best)

    You 2 are right. It’s Fat Sat…winds me up a treat….what a twat.

As a team, I don’t like Birmingham, but as it’s Houghton, I can’t help myself. A true gent and deserves success.

Still like Boro as an outside chance. Be good to get in another derby game (and a likely 6 points) :)

I hate fat sam too…..he is turning west ham into a poor mans stoke with his terrible long ball tactics.

and those comments from liverpool fans are so funny….read the blog and they say things like they prefer their transfer policy…we are gambling on players….

well i would rather gamble 4 mil on a player like cabaye then 16 mil on henderson.

…if they think henderson is a safe gamble…might have to open a casino in liverpool and rake in the money

  • 134 Taking the Papiss // Apr 23, 2012 at 8:36 PM

So I have watched a lot of what people are saying and have comments about finishing top 4 and simpson

Top 4- Basically I have had a look at the fixtures and I think 6 points will do it. I don’t think Tottenham will win 3 games and so that would put us above them. If we get 6 points Chelsea will need 11 from next 4 games and essentially that means win everyone, with us still to play and Liverpool still to play I think that’s unlikely. A draw against Chelsea and we basically guarantee finishing above them (assuming we win Wigan game which is in no way certain!). Remember guys we are so used to fearing the top sides we don’t think about the fact that they won’t want to play us either and we have got to get into that mindset. You think Chelsea want to play us in a must win game? Of course not, we are currently THE in form team in the league! Also Man City will be very difficult to beat and we may well lose but I can absolutely guarantee they won’t want to come to Newcastle knowing if they lose to us they probably won’t win the league. Have a bit of faith in the boys because nobody will want to play us right now!

Simpson – I think he is a decent player but nothing spectacular! That being said he is no less responsible for our good run than anyone else. We have got where we are by having strong team spirit and being a very good team, not just a bunch of individuals and I think that means that it is wrong to single out players for criticism. Someone said that he was looking disinterested, if that means another 4 clean sheets in a row (it is 4 now right?!?!?!) then I don’t care what he looks like!

That being said, I have a theory about our back 4 next year. I think we will bring in Pieters and hopefully Vertonghen. Douglas is ok, but the boy from Ajax is an absolute monster and strong in every single department. If this is the case I can see simpson being second choice next season with a back 4 of Pieters/Santon, Colo, Vertonghen and S. Taylor. This back 4 along with Jonas and Tiote holding will make us extremely solid at the back and mean the front 4 of Cabaye, Ba, Cisse and HBA have licence to attack and attack. It will also help HBA to have S. Taylor behind him as he is more robust defensively than Simmo. Please guys though, don’t go on about getting rid of a player who has played in every game of an incredibly successful season, it’s just not right!

  • 135 macdonaldtudor // Apr 23, 2012 at 8:57 PM

I don’t think Simpson is great player but a quick question, how many goal line clearances has he done this season? by my count at least ten

  • 136 GeordieTwo // Apr 23, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Well thought out Taking the Papiss. I have to agree with you about the squad and the future for us. Very promising indeed. I’m not sure we will get Vertongen but would love to see it happen. Saylor is definitely better than Willo but somehow has to stay healthy, maybe tone his game down a little. A tall fast right back would be fantastic. Somehow we must get Ba back in the goals. The team tried hard to get him one against Stoke. A fantastic lad. Great to see Collo in the PFA team of the year as well.

When Pardew says he’ll try and bring in 4-5 player, do you lot think he means 4-5 starters or squad players?

We would have to bring in some really exceptional talent to shift most our current starting 11.

  • 140 Wor Shearer // Apr 23, 2012 at 9:17 PM

I hope they are potential starters of the same or ideally better quality than we have as hard as that will be but if we could raise the level of competition it willonly help. I know it is wishfull thinking but I would like us to win a proper trophy as was 1 when we won the fairs cup so the memory of it is a little hazy ha ha

  • 143 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Apr 23, 2012 at 9:24 PM

Gaitan and Goetze?!?! Dortmund are about to retain the league and Gaitan looks like he’s going to Man United or similiar.

I think that’s getting a bit ahead of yourself.

Plus, that would go against the policy- there’s plenty of quality younger, less established players that would be more likely.

  • 145 Wor Shearer // Apr 23, 2012 at 9:29 PM

Goetze is only 19, i’d hardly call him established. I would call him expensive though, so you’re right in that respect but remember Pardew said we have our current budget but also a champions league budget! (fingers crossed, of course)

  • 146 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 9:30 PM

I think he means 4-5 first team players able to push for the starting 11 every game and 2-3 that will be better than what we have currently!

On the subject on who we can have I agree that we could and can attract bigger names like kagawa but I don’t think we will and think we shouldn’t alter our strict transfer plan.

As I said earlier I would be happy with spending £13 million if we can attract good freebies.

We need to strengthen so many areas that I think the current policy is the best policy.

    1 RB/LB, 1 CB, 1 CM, 1AM, 1 LW, 1CF

In defence of wor shearer I agree and believe we could attract the likes of gotze!

Just because he is playing for the German champions doesn’t mean we could be a tempting option.

Yeah it’s unlikely but we attracted Ligue 1 winner with Lille Yohan Cabaye and Eredivise winner Chiek Tiote from FC Twente. Both turned down CL for the pull of the PL.

I don’t think in a million years we will buy goetze but he would be attracted by us, who wouldn’t?

Boom boom did you read my post on Simpson, i am not knocking him but in school boy football they say don’t back off into your own box that is my only criticism os Simpson. he is quite typical of modern full backs though and i don’t know where we are going to find a better RB than him as ref my previous comment he has cleared at least ten balls off the line and probably gained us ten+ points in doing so and we could spend 30M and not necessarily get anyone better (fee is a delibarate exageration). At least he gives everything everytime he plays

  • 157 Pardew's fist pump // Apr 23, 2012 at 10:00 PM

How I see summer shaping up, whether we make CL or not:

    Out:

Forster – 3m – Made it clear he wants to play regularly

Simpson – 3-4m (would like to keep him, but out of him and Guthrie, I think Simpson is more likely to exit.)

Smith – Yippee! Finally a valuable 60k freed up!

Loven – could see him going back up to Rangers for swan-song season, did some great work for us in Championship.

Ranger – Just get rid by any means, please.

    Loan:

    Gosling

    Abeid
    Vuckic

The latter 2 with an option to recall. Think Gosling needs a whole season away, plying his trade in another Prem team every week.

    In:

Douglas – 4m in compensation, think it could be done.

Debuchy – 8m confided to his friend Cabaye that he wants to come, although he’ll be nearing 27 in summer, which could divert us elsewhere.

Corgnet – 5m box-to-box CM who’s risen through tiers in France and is having a great season, scores goals, apparently a model pro too.

Hoilett – a significant signing fee akin to Ba’s, about 2m. I just can’t see MA not being hyper-keen on letting AP get a player in who’s proven in PL, young and probably worth 15m as soon as he’s tied up to a long-term deal.

Outlay = 13m and probably about +50k on the wage bill(?)

    _______________Krul_______________
    Debuchy___Saylor___Colo___Santon
    ___________Tiote___Jonas
    _______________Cabaye
    ___Ben Arfa________________Hoilett___
    _______________Cisse

    _______________Elliot_______________
    Tavernier___Willo___Douglas___Raylor
    __________Guthrie___Perch
    _______________Corgnet
    ___Marveaux_____________Ferguson___
    _______________Ba

Rotating the likes of Ba, Corgnet etc, but using most of the 2nd team predominantly as our domestic cup team.

Not only is it what I’m guessing at, but it’s also my realistic ideal :P

  • 158 Wor Shearer // Apr 23, 2012 at 10:02 PM

I don’t think we should be scared to pay +15m if the player if good enough. Just because Liverpool have failed miserably in their expensive signings there are plenty of other very successful big signings.

Liverpool made the mistake(s) of paying big money on gambles (not proven) and none paid off.

  • 159 Beattie25 // Apr 23, 2012 at 10:04 PM

    macdonaldtudor

No offence but have you been living in a cave for 2 years?

To say ‘we could spend 30 million and not get anyone better’ is a bit wide of the mark.

With the current scouting system we could get better for 5 million IMO!

For 30 million you could get some unbelievable player.

The stats are, as repeated again and again, an illusion to the fact that Simmo is good but not great. He hasn’t saved us 10 points the team do a collective job and he was in the right place at the right time. Him being on the line is down to tactics and clearing some of those shots there has been an element of luck.

Look I think he is decent but in a team with Krul, Saylor, Colo, Santon, Tiote, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Ba and Cisse it isn’t hard to imagine what a team we’d have if we added more players like the ones we have rather than feel we owe simmo a debt of gratitude. I guarantee if he got offered 40k a week elsewhere he’d be off before you could say ‘I agree with you beattie’

Beattie – You mean by Spening £35million on Carroll or getting Ba for FREE? yeah a think he has a perfect point imo… yes there is obviously some players who are worth it but a would rather buy a team of workers and good players than have 1 superstar taking up all the wages and thinking he’s bigger and better than the club oh then getting injured and leaving for free

  • 162 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Apr 23, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Look, I agree that IF we get 4th then we could be ambitious and looking at the players/ team (Ben Arfa, Cisse, Cabaye…) we already have I think we would be seen as an exciting prospect.

However, Goetze and Gaitan would be unlikely to move unless they’re going to an ‘elite’ side (Man U, R. Madrid etc.)

I would love us to sign a truly exciting young player like that, but I don’t think it would/ should be for ~25m.

We should be as ambitious as possible but not potentially frivolous.

I am guessing as well as not being able to read properly as in the whole post you have never played football as tactics don’t teach positional sense and as i said in my comment 30M was an exageration watch danny alves he is fairly poor defensively for 24M. and yes you may get someone better fir 5M but most players take time to settle and we have been lucky with a lit of our signings. please actually watch simson yes he makes mistakes but tactics have him pushing right up the pitch it takes a very fit boy to cover as much pitch as he does give him a break i think for 500k he is ok

Bearing in mind the title of this thread, and playing devil’s advocate, my view of our worst-case scenario:
    Cheslski sign Tiote;
    PSG sign Ba;
Simmo doesn’e see sense, doesn’t sign his new contract and heads for oblivion for £30k a week (nice work if you can get it)
Guthrie goes somewhere and is never heard of again
    Spurs sign Pardew.

Look I read the ‘exaggerated fee’ but I understood what you were implying and I referred to that fee to disagree with you quoting your own words.

If we are talking positional sense then Simmo should swap roles to goal keeper as he has more ability on the line than he does at RB.

Tactics don’t teach positional sense but tactics put you into a position that allow you to use that sense.

Admit that he is a good player, that we could do better but it would be sad to see him leave and we can draw a line under this whole hrrid affair!

  • 172 soundoid // Apr 23, 2012 at 10:24 PM

The nice thing about Simpson is he keeps it simple we don’t need flair players in all positions. If he huffs it long it’s because maybe he’s been told to do that. I don’t have a problem with him.

But, I think that Guthrie might be gone this summer…If there is one common denominator of a Newcastle midfielder these day, it’s the ability to defend (especially for a CM).

Guthrie is an amazing passer of the ball, but Pardew has publicly stated that Guthrie is a poor defender.

Corgnet might be a replacement & Abeid would be the long-term option.

I like Simpson, I think he has done a great job but…

    1) if you had to replace one player from our starting 11 (our strongest, all fit 11) who would it be? for me simpson is the weakest

    2) He is great for where were are…he is better than most right backs outside the top 6 but probably the worst in the top 6…. so if we want to move on we need a player like walker, ivanovic. micah richards….somebody who can defend but also offer more going forward.

BUT if we didn’t replace him and he stayed….i would still be happy with him

    @soundoid

    well yeh..hence why i said best 11

but we need to make some changes….must improve year on year

and for me we need a full back who can defend but also attack…simmo struggles going forward (much rather my full back struggle going forward than struggle defending)

I just think we need a new full back and somebody to replace steven taylor….he is very good but susceptible to injury so very good cover is needed

  • 187 soundoid // Apr 23, 2012 at 11:10 PM

Do we need attacking full backs?

We play 4-2-3-1 morphing in to 4-2-4 on the break. Add in attacking full backs and we’re Brazil or Norway in the late 70′s early 80′s.

Strange how you never thought to bring the lost/forgotten links to the attention of other readers of this blog at the time of your reading of them.

Strange that the activities you are alluding to are illegal and yet none of the authorities appear to be pursuing MA for the cash you say he is supposedly milking from the club.

Strange, very strange that not only none of the illegal activities you claim are being investigated but none of the other blinkered neggers on this site ever read the so called leaked papers either.

I really hope that we keep all our fringe players; if we let the likes of Simpson and Guthrie leave for free – we are never going to be able to pick up the same quality; these guys also know the club, city, fans and have worn the shirt with pride. I think Stoke have played an additional 11 games due to the Europa; we will have played roughly 43/44 games this season. Next year we will probably play 15 more; to let established fringe players go would be a travesty. I don’t want to be pessimistic but Fulham according to Jol have only got out of a potential relegation battle due to an early exit of the Europa; of course like every other Newcastle fan I hope by some miracle we get fourth but I would then hate to see the club go two steps backwards. That’s why I hope the club recruit sensibly over the Summer and they can consolidate next season and if we finish 8th next season I just really hope there isn’t a witch hunt for Pardew to get the sack.

Cupidstunt you have nearly named yourself correctly it was on newsnow and variius other sites. also taking money out of a budiness you own is not illegal. how come MA only publishes limited acvounts cos he is paying himself back for the loans he has made to the club. What a well made argument Fozzie bear ha ha
