Alan Pardew has been seen at a lot of Lille games this season, so we wonder just who exactly he is scouting at the French Champions.
Aurélien Chedjou – Lille center-back – are Newcastle interested?
Earlier this month Joe Cole, who is on loan at Lille from Liverpool, said that Alan Pardew has been seen around six times at Lille games this season.
Eden Hazard is a star player at Lille, but Newcastle would not pay the fee for him, and they prefer to recruit players who are younger, but can turn into top players like 21 year-old Eden, the Belgium International.
The conventional wisdom is that Newcastle have been watching right back Mathieu Debuchy, one of Yohan Cabaye’s best friends, and it seems he is an accomplished player, and could do a job for Newcastle in the back four.
Newcastle will be improving their defense this summer, with as many as three defenders coming into the ranks, and we think Debuchy could come in whether or not Danny Simpson leaves the club in the summer.
Young Davide Santon is now coming through very well at Newcastle, and we would expect Davide to be a starter in one of the full back positions next season, as he can play either side equally well.
But with Pardew being at Lille games so often this season, maybe Newcastle are looking at other players than Mathieu, and one player who could interested them is 26 year-old center-back Aurelien Chedjou, their 6’1″ center-back, who also plays for Cameroon.
The right footed center-back has played 33 times with four goals for Lille this season, and since joining them from Rouen in 2007, he has played a total of 155 times with 11 goals for the current French Champions.
He stands 6’1″ tall and turns 27 in June, so he is probably on the border-line as far as his age goes, as Newcastle usually want to sign younger players. He has played 9 times for Cameroon, since making his debut back in 2009.
There have been reports that Newcastle are interested in Douglas of FC Twente and Jan Vertonghen of Ajax, but they are also said to be checking on other center-backs too, and we think Chedjou could be one of them.
And if West Ham don’t get promoted back to the Premier League this season, and we’ll know by Saturday afternoon, Newcastle could go after James Tomkins, who has had an excellent season at West Ham, and was recently named in the PFA Championship team for this season.
When we’ve watched James this year, he has generally played in defensive midfield and he’s looked a good solid player, can tackle well, good in the air, and he always seems to play the safe easy ball.
We watched West Hams’ 2-1 win over Leicester last night, and he was back playing at center-back, but don’t be surprised if Newcastle renew their interest in the player, if West Ham are not in the Premier League next season.
What do you think?
