Dutch international Erik Pieters seems still to be a target of Newcastle in the summer.
Erik Pieters – could be coming to Newcastle this summer
As we reported earlier today, Erik has a hairline fracture of his foot, and he is currently in a plaster and has probably played his last game for PSV this season, and he is now trying to get fit for Holland, so he can play in the European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine this summer.
We always thought Erik was a decent player until he had a nightmare game against England at the end of February, where he looked vulnerable and rather slow, and was taken off at half time.
So we though we’d run a poll to see if readers think Newcastle should sign him in the summer.
Of course the 23-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Newcastle last summer, but even though it seems the move almost came off – in the end the two clubs couldn’t agree a fee.
We believe that Newcastle already have some moves agreed for the summer transfer market, and we should see players coming in during the month of June, and some may even be announced before that time, and Erik could be one of them.
And it’s hardly surprising that the Dutch International is keen to come to Tyneside, as Newcastle have had such a high profile this year, with their exploits in the Premier League, and the lads have won their last six games and have often looked a very good side.
Pieter’s agent Piet van der Pol has confirmed that Erik is interested in joining Newcastle (big surprise), but he also says that other players are interested in joining Newcastle this summer:
“He was interested last year.” ”Newcastle United is a fantastic club and I know that Erik follows them because of his friendship with Tim Krul.”
“If they come in for Erik of course he will be interested in talking to them, but right now the main thing that he is focused on is getting fit for Euro 2012.”
“Newcastle have done tremendously this season and I know that there are a lot of players who would like to join them.”
Newcastle are fast becoming a high profile club again, and if we can win our last four games of the season, there will be lots of players want to join Newcastle in the summer.
It certainly looks like Alan Pardew has quickly revived Newcastle, and they now look a very good team, and we hope that will continue for the next several seasons – fingers crossed.
And who knows, we may even win a trophy fairly soon – although yes – I must not get carried away – I almost forgot.
Comments welcome.

Im sure our management will look at his injury track record this season and will fell concerned, because he would be a really good addition but may turn out a liability if we sign him and his injuries continue

I think the bad game against England was just a ploy. He’s already destined for the toon, so it was an attempt not to attract any more interest from England. Great Idea!
And Ed, I too feel a trophy may be near, surely it’s about that time? However, you’re right, mustn’t get carried away…one game at a time

i voted no for some reason, just a gut instinct hope i’m wrong only seen him in a couple of games and the england one obviously havent been blown away.
i’d say he definitely goes along with the brilliant attitude our players have now though seems like a top lad, think we should by him just to keep krul happy

Oh and in regards to the last thread I agree our reserves yesterday didn’t look great (in fact very poor at times tbh) and I can see why the scrapping them has happened, hopefully this new one built by Carrs freebie kids scouting can be a improvement on them next season

18 toonking // Apr 24, 2012 at 4:37 PM
back in the summer i was desperately hoping he would sign for us but i am starting to question wether it is worth the risk, he seems to be looking a bit injury prone so we might have a simular situation with LB as we having at CB this season.
while there is a lot of talk around transfers atm does anybody know if we are link with any forwards.
19 yorkshireToon // Apr 24, 2012 at 4:41 PM
CODARM – true and yeh that could be a bit awkward however with it only being the olympics shouldn’t be too big a deal
cisse comes across as the sorta guy who’d give his position to ba if he wanted it as cisse’s the main man with us now anyway i can imagine ba having nightmares about cisse catching him on goals this season! lol
20 Wor Cheik // Apr 24, 2012 at 4:42 PM
I think that we should sign Aly Cissohko instead as he seems much pacier and athletic than Pieters which suits the style of play in the Premier league. I would then put Santon at right back as I think he has looked very good this season and been one of the stronger performers.
21 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 24, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Too right. Only 5 to go with four games remaining. Wouldn’t put it beyond Cisse. It’s pretty amazing having these 2 at the club, along with all the others of course
22 yorkshireToon // Apr 24, 2012 at 4:48 PM
I feel like if ba doesn’t score again this season it could increase his chances of leaving i don’t know why? was dieing for a penalty against stoke! its amazing looking at out outs on the right here and seeing sol campbell and shefki kuqi to think what we have now!
23 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 24, 2012 at 4:50 PM

26 chris_g // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM
“We believe that Newcastle already have some moves agreed for the summer transfer market…….and Erik could be one of them.”
That’s pure speculation, I’m afraid. In addition to the bits that Ed quoted, Pieters’ agent also went on to say:
“There’s no talks going on at the moment. The last time we spoke to Newcastle was last August,” he revealed.
“They have not talked to us or to PSV Eindhoven at this time and his main focus is on trying to be fit for the Euros, then we will see what happens. Who knows who will come in for Erik this summer?”
27 WWJBD // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Maybe its Eds way of getting us off the blog?
28 philippealbert // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Why do people keep saying he’s so injury prone? He’s been out with a metatarsal injury and now a hair-line fracture. It’s not a dodgy hamstring, or Demba’s supposed knee problem, these are freak accidents that can happen to anyone. Good player, would strengthen our squad with his versatility, and we wants to play for us. Sign him.
29 ToonDownSouth // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:01 PM
How has anyone got the idea that Newcastle care about injury records? Haha
I’m suspicious about us pulling out of the Maiga deal due to a medical. Seems more a case of realising Cisse was available to me.
Also, our U18′s won the league
Good times.

Defo agree with the suspicion surrounding Maiga, think we got the nod on Cisse and that deal was then made surplus to requirements, yet more good business by The Portly one and del boy.
36 Tsunki // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:16 PM
TDS – the Maiga deal was very fishy their medics went away noy knowing what strabge malady the lad was suffering from. Of course the answer was that he was afflicted by the lack of being as good an option as Cisse
Players are attracted to us not simply because we are heading for europe but because they are beginning to admire the way the club is set up for the long term. That and we are like a second hand shop that takes damaged items and repairs then. Lick of paint and in the shop window
37 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:17 PM
And talking of potential targets, this Jerson Cabral guy looks like a cracking player. Only just turned 21 in January, him and Ben Arfa on the wings, swapping positions every now and then, would be too much for most Premier League defences!

Hope i lose my tenner by the way and they get absolutely smashed.

42 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 5:28 PM
Re Cabral:
It all comes down to how much he’d cost of course. Hoillett could be the better option as he’s free, I think the same age and of course he’s proven in the Premier League, a thing that people so often go on about as being important, although I trust Carr’s judgement when it comes to foreign players.

If you’re really keen you can go online, apply for membership (I think it’s £25 now *gasp*) and then buy your tickets. Otherwise watch out for the public sale shortly and take your chances. nufc.com site is a good one to watch as well as the official site.
50 Ben3arfa // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:11 PM
I personally think Hoillett would be a great signing for us, him being right footed playing on the left with HBA wide right and Cisse in the middle is a mouth watering prospect ..
Somehow i see the Amalfitano signing as midfield cover rather than adding to our crop of our winger
51 Tsunki // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:14 PM
NotAGhostToon – agh should do research first sorry mate pay attention to check, its ST holders only sale by the looks, you’ll need to know someone to get them for you. sorry mate, member sale means ST holders with zero points on this one.
52 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:19 PM
@ Tsunki – haha that must be it mate, us intellectuals scared off that lot who were on here before bickering about stats
@ Ben3arfa – completely agree, Hoillett would be a great signing, especially on a free, I think he’d really add to our team. Some of the goals he’s scored this season have been fantastic and he’s quite similar to Ben Arfa in that he looks good on the opposite side to his stronger foot, although still plays great on the right and puts in some great crosses.
53 rich_toonfan // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:19 PM
I think Pieters would be a good signing…..he looked poor agianst England but that was his first game back after a few months out.
I haven’t seen too much of him though….I trust whoever we sign will fit in well with talent, the club attitude and general hard work.
I would like a new right back…..statistically simpson is good….but those statistics shown are not the only ones that matter…shows very little of his going forward ability such as pass completion, cross completion, assists, cross blocked, crosses prevented, how many ball get crossed in from his side.
He is good and as long as he is at the toon I will cheer him and encourage the lad on twitter if he ever comes back on but I think if we are to improve it is the main area we need to strengthen.
Although I am a big cricket fan and players there often have weaknesses and instead of being dismissed just work on it and improve. Sure simmo could improve through crossing practice and just watching how some more attacking full backs operate.
Hope he signs and is part of the squad next season though.

(just realised I should try and use words other than ‘great’ when describing players lol)
55 rich_toonfan // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:21 PM
@Ben
With Hoilett we would have to pay a certain fee anyway as compensation to blackburn, probs around the 2 mil mark.
We should go in now, offer then 3 mil for him and get the contract tied up before everyone else gets a chance to turn his head with more money.
56 Tiote4PM // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:27 PM
In Carr I trust… No need for anything else.
57 Tsunki // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:28 PM
NotAGhostToon – ok I have done due diligence now and there are officially NO tickets left for Citeh game. It says there is availability in Stand C gallowgate east, but they are actually lying. you’re going to have to do away with someone and assume their identity.
58 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 6:28 PM
Well yeah, obviously there’s gonna be fees involved, just like how Demba Ba’s was a free signing but wasn’t entirely free. Like you say though it’ll be probably no more than a couple of million quid, which is nothing compared to what we’d have to pay for a player of similar ability with Prem experience.
Could possibly go about it that way instead, although Blackburn probably wouldn’t want his head being on another team while they’re scrapping for survival.
Also remember that foreign teams can come to pre-contract agreements 6 months before his contract expires whereas we can only sign him I think it’s a month or a couple of weeks before, or it may actually be once it’s expired, I’m not 100%, so he may already have a move in place and we just don’t know.

66 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:02 PM
Also I think that while Venky’s are clearly clueless, I don’t think they’re quite stupid enough to sell off their best player without the manager’s consent and risk him not being at his best for their run-in, as it would cost them a hell of a lot more than the couple of extra million they’d get out of him if they then got relegated.
And seeing as we’re talking of signings, what would be everyone’s ideal transfers this summer? I’d love to see Hoilett, Sigurdsson, Yanga-Mbiwa and Debuchy, to have us line up like this
————————Krul
Debuchy—–Mbiwa—-Colo—–Santon
——-Cabaye—–Tiote—–Sigurdsson
Ben Arfa———–Cisse———–Hoillett

76 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:19 PM
Only problem with that team is it’s complete lack of English players in the starting lineup, I was one who lambasted Arsenal when they started a match without a single English player in it a few years ago so it’d be a bit hypocritical of me to be happy with this team
@ LEAZES END – I think that while Ba’s done really well for us this season, he’s obviously not a winger and hasn’t scored since he’s been out on the left. The dilemma is that the 4-3-3 is working so well for us that to go back to 4-4-2 with Ba in the middle would spoil it, and I think Hoillett fits into the 4-3-3 better than Ba does.
Hoillett on the left cutting in on his right and Ben Arfa doing the opposite on the right would be deadly, and with them both able to swap positions they’d have defences not knowing what to do with them!

I would because I cannot think of many exciting English players with the pedigree required that we could attract.

Look at Liverfool who bought British and might not even finish top 10.
I’d take an English free team for a few years until we find a few youngsters with amazing potential.

Indian sorry for the fly past – it was a French exclamation that says ‘Yes! it’s true!’ and the ‘Si’ is correct afaik. Niafron? A little help here please…..
89 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:27 PM
Also, while Hoillett may be a Canadian international, he has English citizenship and I’m pretty sure he’d count as a homegrown player trained at another club (for when we’re in the Champions League next season
) so it isn’t technically ALL foreigners in that lineup haha.
90 Tsunki // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:28 PM
Indian, oh and by the way yes you should be VERY afraid – pretty soon any English player signing for NUFC will be required to learn French. Fact. Statistically speaking of course.
91 Big Pappa Cisse // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:29 PM
I personally think we should have 2 english players in the starting 11, i would go for
1. steven taylor
2. Leighton Baines
Baines is a solid left back and is probably on poor wages at everton. i know he is a boyhood evertonian fan but with the offer of european football and a bigger pay packet we could lure him away for 6 million
92 Spuggy // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:29 PM
You’re forgetting one important ingredient in the recruitment policy – temperament and attitude. If it ain’t right we ain’t signing and spoiling the incredible spirit we have.
93 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:30 PM
@ Tsunki – I know, but I’d rather have the situation where Pardew has a hard choice to make than when he has to pick Ba cause there’s no one else good
Saying that, I’ve just realised I’d forgotten about Marveaux who could play on the left, and Sammy and Obertan (hopefully) still to develop.
94 Tsunki // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Spuggy – your name makes me laugh BTW because this being one of the most international blogs, I always wonder what percentage, statistically speaking of course, of bloggers here actually know what a ‘spuggy’ is ha ha. Just makes me chuckle is all.

Hey guys.
Long time viewer, first time poster.
Firstly, I love this blog.
Secondly, just a quick message to you Ed. (Perhaps you will read this) I have such a great respect for you. You clearly put a lot of time and effort in to this blog and it’s always such a joy to read you articles. It’s great to be part of it even if i have only been sat on the bench overseeing things.
The last thing i read every night is the latest article and the first thing i do when i wake up is catch up on the missed articles.
Anyway, i wish you all the best and good health to you!
Keep it going Ed you are a real star. And the blog and your time is very appreciated.
Thank you.
96 Ben_BKK // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:34 PM
@ Big Pappa – Baines is now 27 and a half, doubt we’d go in for him. He is a great player though and I’d be delighted if we signed him, just can’t see it happening.
97 Big Pappa Cisse // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:34 PM
Also why are ppl leaving Ba out of their teams, its not like he doesen’t get a look in on the left hand side, he has come close on so many occasions in the last 9 games. He played slightly on the left for hoffenheim and west ham and he was still bangin em in. imo its just a matter of time b4 ba gets back in the goals

And more importantly – the team is winning and winning comfortably with Ba in the front three. He does a lot more than score goals. Defender give him a lot of attention, freeing up Cisse and Arfa.
100 davis_toons // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:39 PM
As I´m related to Newcastle, I can only says that with 2 Shola’s around there will still be english players to fight for their places in the squad.

Hi all, anyone got a good link for Barcelona match?
Thanks
102 Big Pappa Cisse // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:44 PM
Also on the Ba debate i think half of the problem with ba is that with him scoring so many goals in the first half of the season teams are singling him out as our main threat, and have been paying so much attention to him that when the relatively unknown cisse came into the squad he started scoring for fun. IMO teams will now identify cisse as the dangerman therefore giving ba more space and hopefully more goals
103 super magpie // Apr 24, 2012 at 7:45 PM
On the arguement of english/ no english players in our starting line up, that’s because the standard of English footballers now is abysmal. England do not have any world class players except from Rooney and hart, maybe wilshere on the future. Compared to Spain- villa, puyol, xavi, iniesta, piqué, llorente etc – English footballing standards are miles behind France, Germany, Spain, holland Atm . Obviously the league is still the best ( because it’s mostly foreign players) but I’d rather finish consistently finish in the top 4 and win trophies with a foreign team than mid table with an English – aka Liverpool.

Barcelona are playing a bit like swansea and that Xavi, think he might have the potential to be as good as Leon Brittian, i know his statistics are similar.
On a serious note, if chelsea get through this tie it would be a bigger miracle than Bills Son coming on the blog and slagging off Ashley.

Baines wud be a class purchase, i think we should go for him, makes a statement we mean business wud make him our no1 target in the summer, wouldnt mind Zaha as well but wud like Sammi to have a chance because i believe the boy defo has great potential.

Another young Scot with serious promise is Jack Harper currently with Real Madrid. Plays AM and on the deck in the Spanish style as born and brought up there of Scottish parents…

I would love to see Bayern Munich or Real Madrid torturing Chelsea later, rather than seeing them now being knocked out, but if we ever need that to happen for our favor.
Otherwise, we just go for the top four and ignore Chelsea!

Chelsea will have to select a defence from:
Cole
Bosingwa
Bertrand
Ferreira (they still have him right?)
All fullbacks
Maybe they’ll put players like Essien or Mikel in unfamiliar roles. Can’t see them doing it with such a shuffled team, against either Madrid or Bayern, no way – at least that’s what i’m taking solace in.

Oh my chelski. I will get flamed for this but Terry’s red ard was a bit harsh imo. Also chelski’s two goals were excellent, worryingly so. With ten men. It looked like us versus swansea – I couldn’t see Barca scoring second half after the pena miss. Their wide men were well contained, they had no aerial threat at all in any shape, and they did not fare well against a premier-league-drilled team optimised to shut up shop.
Real will swat them, but I don’t hold out much for us at Stamford Bridge. Ho Hum.

So much hatred for chelsea on here tonight. I’m as big a toon fan as any on here, I’d chop my left arm off to see newcastle in the champions league next season, hell I’d even kick my granny! But you have got to stand back and say chelsea were incredible, absolutely incredible. Bashing Frank Lampard? In my opinion I have never seen a better performance from an english player in my life, he showed his class defensive game and put in two killer balls for ramires and kalou. We all get annoyed when other fans don’t appreciate our talent, and we call them deluded and idiotic, so let’s not do it ourselves.
From a toon point of view, terrible result, not only because there through to the final (where they’ll get beaten, I’m sure of it) but lots of there key players are out, which means they’ll be playing in the PL and not being rested. I’m fairly sure Arsenal nor Chelsea will drop many points in the next few games so its all down to us. If we win 3 out 4 we will be in the CL next year. Its all on us. So let’s stop bashing other teams, and just get behind the toon! It could be worse, it could be the bindippers!
Rant over, sorry

coccolini – well said. I was just about overcoming my self-loathing at cheering on a Spanish team over an English one when terry got sent off. Suddenly I found myself feeling a bit sorry they had to go that way, subject to the daftness of their in-house supremacist. Then the absolutely sublime goal, chipped with aplomb – I said to my lads if Cisse scored that we would be in delirium or words to that effect. As the game wore on and Barca showed how ineffectual they can be, I came to realise this was actually a great performance by an English team, I was jealous that it wasn’t us.
But for everything that is good and right in this world, please let Real Madrid beat them.
