John Carver has been given the local interviews today, and it’s probably fitting that he does that, following the announcement that a bronze statue of Sir Bobby Robson will be unveiled before the game at home to Manchester City on May 6th.
John Carver – everybody deserves credit at Newcastle
John was the Assistant Manager when Bobby had his magical five year reign as Newcastle manager from 1999-2004, and it’s good that Alan Pardew brought John back 15 months ago, to be his Assistant Manager, and it was a great appointment by Alan.
We are hoping that by May 6th, which is the final home game of the season, that Newcastle will have extended their winning streak to eight games, with wins at Wigan on Saturday and at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday night, although that will be very difficult, we know.
John Carver has gone out of his way today to give everybody at the club credit, for what has been a surprisingly stand-out season for Newcastle, and the lads are getting headlines around the world, for winning six games on the trot , and being so high up in the Premier League table.
John wants to ensure everybody gets the credit at the club, and quite rightly so:
“Bob will be up there watching us and be so proud of what’s going on at the club.” “It’s pretty fitting that we’ve qualified for Europe again.”
“And we’ll be unveiling a statue of him next Saturday against Manchester City.” “The timing could not have been better if I’m being perfectly honest.”
“It’s quite an incredible achievement when you think we were playing Championship football two years ago.” “I was working at Plymouth the night when the Championship was won.”
“Cast your mind back three years ago when we got relegated at Aston Villa, if you’d said that within three years we’d be playing European football somebody would have come and put a straight-jacket on you and took you away.”
“So now to be in Europe is quite an achievement from the football club’s point of view.” “Some of the players and backroom staff who were there then are still here now.” “It is an incredible achievement and it’s been achieved by everybody here.”
“The manager and his staff and the players get the credit.” “But it has been a massive effort by everybody – people like the masseur Micky Holland the masseur and backroom guys like George Ramshaw and Ray Thompson.”
European football in the Europa League is already guaranteed for Newcastle United for next season, and now the challenge is to see if the lads can somehow scrape into the Champions League for next season.
Given the official goal for the season was to finish in the top ten, Newcastle have already blown through that target, because the worst Newcastle can now finish is in 6th place – which is a full six places higher than we finished last season.
And that will give Newcastle an additional £4.8M this season in placement money – since it’s around £800K for every place in the Premier League.
That’s some going for Newcastle this season – amazing really.

Comment #81jimmyxavi….he did say the words “Robson was not a toon legend” – that was where others disagreement was. In fact, I believe everyone agreed, despite our inferior historical knowledge of NUFC, that he was correct in saying Joe Harvey deserves a statue and perhaps even more so that Bobby Robson. It was the fact he was saying Robson wasn’t a legend here which is completely wrong. Surely the majority of Newcastle fans decide who’s a legend and who’s not?
Overall it was a really silly argument and completely blown out of proportion. I don’t think it’s a great idea to take yours and Beatties disagreement of yesterday and try to take this one over instead. It’s a non arguement unless you’re saying you don’t think Sir Bobby Robson is a Newcastle legend

How about you be the bigger man for once.
I held my hands up yesterday when I got Dez’s playing career wrong.

Bobby Robson managed Newcastle for 5 years. He managed Ipswich for 13 years.
Joe Harvey played for Newcastle 224 times, He managed us for 13 years winning 3 cups in his time at Newcastle.
Bobby Robson might be our(the premiership) generations legend but for anyone over the age of 60 I’m sure that Joe Harvey was!
Jimmymagpie was making this point.

“He stated that Mike Ashley was trying to buy cheap publicity.”
This is where we disagree with him mate, that statement implies that he is not deserving but mike is using his name as publicity stunt…i disagree with that very much..and also saying that he was not a Newcastle legend but an ipswich, however TRUE that is, can someone not be a legend at two clubs?? I am deeply disappointed that nufc fans would even question the fact as to why sir bobby is getting a statue?? Wow..no matter who old U be, that is wrong on so many levels

I only said something about you becasue you where slating someone’s knowledge of football!
I argued that as someone who has played professionally that positioning is not luck.
You then say I’ve got a superiority complex. I was saying that because you questioned someone else’s knowledge I could say that I had first hand knowledge! Not bragging or anything like that, I said that i’d quit playing at that level because it wasn’t enjoyable! I don’t think im better than anyone.
You called Jimmymagpie a cock for his opinion.

Comment #98Jimmyxavi @88 You’re comparing the 2 again, which is what jimmy2 kept doing. That’s not our point.
I happily agree that there are other’s “more” deserving of a statue. But to say Robson is not a newcastle legend (at whatever end of the scale pleases you) is just plain wrong.
He also accomplished great things in many other places, but that doesn’t stop him being a legend in the hearts and minds of others. Where is the problem in what I’m saying?

See Jimmymagpie and various others on this blog where around and went to the matches last time we won something* and he like many other believe that the man who achieved this should be deserving of a statue also.

Comment #102Can everyone again the squad will be far superior to the squad which started the season even minus smith, lovenkrands and other fringe players who will leave?
I think it will be significantly stronger providing we do not sell anyone because most of the team is u26. This season has also seen the emergence of players like Raylor and Perch who will play a lesser role next year because the team will be strengthened. There will be at least 10 players coming in this window and the next (January).
The rules for player recruitment for the academy will be changing which is probably why so many youngers are being axed from the academy.
With the all but guaranteed qualification for Europe more player will be attracted to Newcastle so keeping in line with the transfer strategy we won’t have to pay players over the odds in wages. If they don’t want to play for the badge then they will go to Man City or PSG.
So exciting times. Expect lots of players coming in but if names are mentioned in the tabloids don’t believe it until it happens. I think only Santon was mentioned in the press before he came, yet everyone thought we would get cissoko.
If we get third which I don’t think will happen then Arsenal and Spuds would be in Europa. That would significantly reduce their income and probably lead to player sales weakening their squads and giving us an advantage over them next season. Chelsea are not in great shape as their squad is very old. Ok they just been barca over 2 legs but compared to our youthful squad they are getting worse.
Massive 8 days coming up. Wigan (a) Chelsea (a) / Man City (h)

Comment #104No no no no no
I have said it a thousand times if I had said it once, I never quoted Simpsons positioning as luck. I said his goal line clearences had an element of luck. Several hours later you came on the blog at 1:00 am and slagged me off preaching to anyone that would listen that I had said his positioning was luck. You called me a knob.
Will you apologise for that?
Also I called jimmymagpie a cock, not for his opinion, but for using his delusion of grandeur to tell other bloggers his opinion mattared more because he had supported the club longer. His statements IMO and in the opinion of other bloggers were an outrage and highly offensive towards Sir Bobby Robson, a man loved unviersally.
We are all in agreement that other people deserve statues but Sir Bobby certainly deserves one and that should not be taken away from him.

Comment #106CODARM.. You’re not seeing the point i’m making.
I see Bobby Robson as a legend! I loved his style of football!
However like Jimmymagpie and that other fella said, they grew up with Bobby Robson being an Ipswich Legend and to them he is not a Newcastle Legend.
But then you have the argument of the word Legend – What makes a Legend, What does the word legend mean etc.

Comment #108I like the timing of the statue. We have had a great run but are coming against two teams that are on as good a run as we are for where they are at. If we keep winning it can only help to pump us up more for Man C but should our run of wins come to an end over the next two games it will be the prefect tonic to motivate the players…hopefully…maybe Shola especially as a super sub 🙂

But to make those goal line clearances, positioning is key therefor if you say there is an element of luck, it is essentially saying that his positioning is lucky.
I will apologise for calling you a knob.
However I still feel that my original point that as a Newcastle player, Simmo should be supported and not slagged off.
And Jimmymagpie said that us kids should read up on the clubs history.. That’s true.. As a supporter of Newcastle United Football Club, we should know the history, our beginnings our best managers, best players, cup winners etc.

Comment #112Jimmy Xavi….Alas….perhaps some middle ground in which to move forward from! Hoorah!
I personally have an issue with any NUFC fan saying that he is not a Newcastle legend, but can fully accept that you have witnessed men contribute more to this club over a longer period of time therefore deserving a statue.
He may well have been a Legend at Ipswich and I’m sure most people, wherever he went, saw him as a Legend. Therefore, as he was a toon supporter, did manage the team for one of their most successful periods in recent history and is considered a worldwide Legend, is it not safe to say he could be considered a Newcastle Legend also?
