It’s Quite An Incredible Achievement By Newcastle This Season

1:55 pm, Thursday, April 26th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 199 Comments

John Carver has been given the local interviews today, and it’s probably fitting that he does that, following the announcement that a bronze statue of Sir Bobby Robson will be unveiled before the game at home to Manchester City on May 6th.

John Carver – everybody deserves credit at Newcastle

John was the Assistant Manager when Bobby had his magical five year reign as Newcastle manager from 1999-2004, and it’s good that Alan Pardew brought John back 15 months ago, to be his Assistant Manager, and it was a great appointment by Alan.

We are hoping that by May 6th, which is the final home game of the season, that Newcastle will have extended their winning streak to eight games,  with wins at Wigan on Saturday and at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday night, although that will be very difficult, we know.

John Carver has gone out of his way today to give everybody at the club credit,  for what has been a surprisingly stand-out season for Newcastle, and the lads are getting headlines around the world, for winning six games on the trot , and being so high up in the Premier League table.

John wants to ensure everybody gets the credit at the club, and quite rightly so:

“Bob will be up there watching us and be so proud of what’s going on at the club.” “It’s pretty fitting that we’ve qualified for Europe again.”

“And we’ll be unveiling a statue of him next Saturday against Manchester City.” “The timing could not have been better if I’m being perfectly honest.”

“It’s quite an incredible achievement when you think we were playing Championship football two years ago.” “I was working at Plymouth the night when the Championship was won.”

“Cast your mind back three years ago when we got relegated at Aston Villa, if you’d said that within three years we’d be playing European football somebody would have come and put a straight-jacket on you and took you away.”

“So now to be in Europe is quite an achievement from the football club’s point of view.” “Some of the players and backroom staff who were there then are still here now.” “It is an incredible achievement and it’s been achieved by everybody here.”

“The manager and his staff and the players get the credit.” “But it has been a massive effort by everybody – people like the masseur Micky Holland the masseur and backroom guys like George Ramshaw and Ray Thompson.”

European football in the Europa League is already guaranteed for Newcastle United for next season, and now the challenge is to see if the lads can somehow scrape into the Champions League for next season.

Given the official goal for the season was to finish in the top ten, Newcastle have already blown through that target,  because the worst Newcastle can now finish is in 6th place – which is a full six places higher than we finished last season.

And that will give Newcastle an additional £4.8M this season in placement money – since it’s around £800K for every place in the Premier League.

That’s some going for Newcastle this season – amazing really.

Statistically if 100% of Jimmies were banned from the blog Beattie would be a resonable human being.

Reading between the lines i think Carver would prefer a statue of Joe Harvey.

Isn`t life great just now? When the Toon keep on winning nothing else seems to matter. It doesn`t matter if you are late … or early. Or whether you are here … or there. If you said it … or didn`t say it. If you`ve been a silly bugger … or a clever sod. If you are having a bad hair day … or you have no hair at all. If your neighbour has given you a funny look, or your wife gives you a funny look … or even if you give yourself a funny look. Howay the lads !!! http://www.mecannylad.com

Did Mecannylad ever tell you about this strange, rather unkempt little bloke who tries to infiltrate our company in the pub on occasional Fridays. Looks as if he`s had his hair cut by a comedian. I don`t know his name but I do know he`ll never die of being parched. He`s such a nosy and inquisitive tonk but at the same time deeply secretive and evasive…… and …… a bloody tight fisted so & so to boot. He`s from Sunderland originally – say no more. Honestly, he`s the sort who would walk on grass verges as opposed to pavements … just to save on shoe leather. He`ll probably make a bloody big to-do if he ever reads this on The NUFC Blog …. but heh, I don`t think he`s into electricity never mind computers. Up the Toon. http://www.mecannylad.com

I am one of those guys!!

This season was my first in 8 years without a season ticket (due to financial reasons)

One of the lads who wants to apply for next season with me got rid of his when we went down. Im tempted not to put his application in out of principle!!

Class corluka even saying spurs wont make top 4 n he’s a spurs player haha

  • 34 -Tendo- // Apr 26, 2012 at 2:55 PM

could some answer this for me cos i’m not sure at all. Say we get 4th and do go into the champions league, it will be a qualifier for the group stages, right?

And if we were to lose that qualifier would it mean we go into the europa or would we be out of all competions? i’m only asking as i remember arsenal nearly lost their qualifying game this season.

  • 35 davybtoon // Apr 26, 2012 at 2:58 PM

Tendo yes if we lost qualifier we wud go into Europa league

  • 36 -Tendo- // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:00 PM

cheers for clarifying that davy….it would be absolutley gut wrenching if we went straight out

  • 37 Londtoon // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:03 PM

Thats an important point though which I tried raising the other day, as say we do get 4th and qualify and we invest heavily “assuming instant 20m”.. 20m is only if we make group stages. Otherwise we just go into europa.

  • 38 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:05 PM

I don’t think whether we get CL or EL will change our transfer targets or policy at all

  • 39 Londtoon // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:08 PM

What makes you say that Ibiza? I mean obviously we will always want to find those diamonds in the rough but I think which competition we are in would have some impact to transfer direction

  • 40 check the toastie // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Boys, the waiting list is only on the family area, wouldnt get ahead of ourselves if i was you, it is a cracking deal for that area as well, can get me and the young un tickets for the price of mine. Wud now like to get the yung un one (8) but cant, thinking about other areas but it becomes a bit expensive, especially due to next year it is going to be sunday games galore.

And you know fair play to those who have kept their season ticket for years, but there are other priorities in some peoples lifes, believe it or not. And no i am not a mackem.

  • 41 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:12 PM

Not 100% Londtoon, but as you say, we wont know for sure until nearer the end of the transfer window (I think) whether or not we’ll get through to the CL group stages and can’t see them investing silly money on the what if.

In my opinion, they will continue to buy as they have, which in all honestly is European competition level talent.

Cisse, Cabaye, HBA, Santon, etc. I doubt highly they’ll start spending £10-15m on players anytime soon, of course there may be the odd exception.

I hope these ramblings make some sense…reading them back i’m not overly confident :)

  • 42 jimmyxavi // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:12 PM

Beattie25.. The man who uses wikipedia to research the clubs history and calls Jimmymagpie a cock a man who has been participating in this blog since the days you where a mackem.

I think the fact that we can fill SJP in the current financial state speaks wonders of all toon fans who go week in week out. As check says, there are other priorities and it’s amazing the dedication and most likely sacrifices they all make to attend. Good job to you all and let’s hope you can spur the boys on for the rest of this season and beyond

    CODARM @38

It’s 100% going to change the tranfser policy. If we didn’t make Europe, Ashley would be happy paying out £5-£6 million on one or two players and bring in a few freebies. Now, you can expect to see £10-£15 million on 2-3 players and a 3-4 freebies. Building a young, cheap squad to at least make 2nd group stages in Europa league.

  • 48 Jail for Ashley // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:22 PM

  • 49 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:23 PM

pieceofpapiss…if you are so sure then I will happily retract my comment. Personally I don’t see why we would pay £10-15m for quality when we’ve been paying a lot less recently. Ashley is a wealthy man, having more money wont change his purchasing methods imo. I do agree though, that on the right player, he will spend big. I just wouldn’t expect more than 1 at a push 2. Happy to eat my words though

  • 50 Vask // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:24 PM

I can see your logic, and agree we wont be paying huge amounts for players, i just think the number of players coming in will be more. at least 5 new players this summer. Especially if we are to shift the dead wood still at the club. I’m also hoping Guthrie and Simpson sign new deals. We need that big squad.

  • 53 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Completely agreed at a statistically proven rate of 129.7826%. We need a lot more good players for depth and I fully expect to buy more reasonably priced players than a couple of high profile ones. Just makes sense with what we’re doing and where we currently are.

I think we’ll be extremely happy with the business we conduct this summer and should have another exciting season ahead.

The man who thinks he holds a superior football knowledge due to the fact he had a training seesion with some no mark footballer and whom jimmyxavi himself knows nothing about.

The man who, like a vulture circling overhead waiting for scraps, chooses an opportune moment to instigate an unprovoked verball assult in order to feel like a real man because he has neither the intellect or fortitude to tackle someone in a decent debate about anything relevant.

The man who rides into battle in the guise of robin hood with a self reflective ideology that he is saving the innocent, but like maid marrion he has no place in the realm where gladiators fight.

jimmyxavi your namesake, jimmymagpie, was the one who initially attacked the Bobby Robson statue and I believe he went further and attacked his fellow toon fans for protecting the clubs right to pay homage to the great man.

jimmymagpie like you, has some form of arrogant self righteousness that pollutes this blog most days and I for one will welcome opinion but go to war with people who use false status to make their own thoughts bigger than others.

I dont care if you’ve been a fan for 100 years, if you have trained under Dez Hazel, if you have blogged since 400 AD, if you are a cock, you are a cock.

  • 67 Londtoon // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:42 PM

    @ Ibiza.

I actually agree that it won’t change the underlying nature of our transfer policy. Why would we when we have had such great success! (Aslong as the diamonds in the rough are still out there).

But for example the amount of players we bring in or how many we decide to release in order to bring what we class as better players in will depend on what competition we are in. Noone can deny that. So the amount we spend will still be an important factor especially if we don’t make the CL Groups. Its a balancing act really! Fingers crossed we get it spot on ey!

About the Jimmymagpie issue I am with beatie on that. Coz what Jimmymagpie implied was that Sir Bobby didn’t deserve the statue. Which imo was wrong, he shud have said that although he deserves it, aren’t there other candidates who are more deserving. I never like to pick sides but Jimmymagpie did come across as a dick.. Having said that, I quite enjoy his posts as they are both informative and insightful, but just because U knw more about something.(in this case Newcastle’s history) does that mean ur opinion is above everyone else??

    Tarie…point well made :)

Londtoon…When would the CL qualifier be for the group stages? Isn’t it quite late? Really doesn’t give them time to implement any plans etc. We’ll obviously never know whether they have 2 plans dependent on which comp we get, but i’d be shocked to see too much of a difference in their planning. Maybe one or two players – but I would imagine they have their target list now regardless of CL or EL. Where can I find some stats or History to prove my argument? :)

  • 76 jimmyxavi // Apr 26, 2012 at 3:58 PM

    Beattie23

Jimmymagpie agreed on a post by Wynsleap.. He then explained that Bobby Robson is actually a Ipswich Legend – This infact is true.

He didn’t mention anyone’s names nor did he say that a statue was undeserving, he simply stated that Joe Harvey had captained the club to 2 cup wins and managed us for another! He stated that Mike Ashley was trying to buy cheap publicity.

He is right about Joe Harvey.. This is a man who was the clubs longest serving captain and manager and a man who last brought us cup success (Unless you count the Intertoto cup which isn’t even recognised by Fifa nor the FA as a major competition)

Do not let your ignorance to the clubs history spill out into a debate. When St James’s Parl got renamed why did all our fans go mad? Because it is part of our history. Joe Havey is an extremely important part of our history.

p.s no mark footballer.. What have you ever achieved?

jimmyxavi….he did say the words “Robson was not a toon legend” – that was where others disagreement was. In fact, I believe everyone agreed, despite our inferior historical knowledge of NUFC, that he was correct in saying Joe Harvey deserves a statue and perhaps even more so that Bobby Robson. It was the fact he was saying Robson wasn’t a legend here which is completely wrong. Surely the majority of Newcastle fans decide who’s a legend and who’s not?

Overall it was a really silly argument and completely blown out of proportion. I don’t think it’s a great idea to take yours and Beatties disagreement of yesterday and try to take this one over instead. It’s a non arguement unless you’re saying you don’t think Sir Bobby Robson is a Newcastle legend

Can everyone again the squad will be far superior to the squad which started the season even minus smith, lovenkrands and other fringe players who will leave?

I think it will be significantly stronger providing we do not sell anyone because most of the team is u26. This season has also seen the emergence of players like Raylor and Perch who will play a lesser role next year because the team will be strengthened. There will be at least 10 players coming in this window and the next (January).

The rules for player recruitment for the academy will be changing which is probably why so many youngers are being axed from the academy.

With the all but guaranteed qualification for Europe more player will be attracted to Newcastle so keeping in line with the transfer strategy we won’t have to pay players over the odds in wages. If they don’t want to play for the badge then they will go to Man City or PSG.

So exciting times. Expect lots of players coming in but if names are mentioned in the tabloids don’t believe it until it happens. I think only Santon was mentioned in the press before he came, yet everyone thought we would get cissoko.

If we get third which I don’t think will happen then Arsenal and Spuds would be in Europa. That would significantly reduce their income and probably lead to player sales weakening their squads and giving us an advantage over them next season. Chelsea are not in great shape as their squad is very old. Ok they just been barca over 2 legs but compared to our youthful squad they are getting worse.

Massive 8 days coming up. Wigan (a) Chelsea (a) / Man City (h)

    Will you apologise for that?

His statements IMO and in the opinion of other bloggers were an outrage and highly offensive towards Sir Bobby Robson, a man loved unviersally.

I personally have an issue with any NUFC fan saying that he is not a Newcastle legend, but can fully accept that you have witnessed men contribute more to this club over a longer period of time therefore deserving a statue.

He may well have been a Legend at Ipswich and I’m sure most people, wherever he went, saw him as a Legend. Therefore, as he was a toon supporter, did manage the team for one of their most successful periods in recent history and is considered a worldwide Legend, is it not safe to say he could be considered a Newcastle Legend also?

jimmyxavi…Personally I love a good ridicule, but I have some issues that I’m working through :)

I get what you are saying, but imo, jimmy2 didn’t make his case well at all. He jumped straight into “you young un’s don’t know nowt” (No, that’s not a direct quote) and saying Bobby isn’t a legend of Newcasltes. That is always going to get a reaction 100% and you can cash that at the stat bank.

It would be nice to think on a blog we could debate such differing opinions without name calling etc, but it’s not always easy – trust me I know. Usually it’s best to ignore a certain poster rather than getting in to a slagging match – although as an impartial viewer I have had the off chuckle from time to time.

As for Beattie, I personally ended up on his “Hate List” some time ago, but he has come back and generally gives good input to the blog imo. I also find him extremely amusing – as i said, I have some issues :). Shall we all start again? Simpsons will come and go, statues will continue to be erected from time to time, but we will all always be Newcaslte fans and we should try to show some respect to each other

    1) pardew did the right thing with HBA. He was in and out of games on his comeback. Maybe Pardew did not think it would take so long for HBA to come to form. Some players never come back to form after injury, Alan Smith

    2) pardew is under massive massive pressure. Hoots went on a poor run and got the chop, a very sad day as a toon fan. But look at where we are now. Around Xmas pardew knew he did not want to lose games so we were negative. We did not have the goals from demba Ba who was on ACON. Pardew is never going to get it 100% right as we smash man U 3-0. Does that mean ferguson is tactically inept?

At the moment we have lots of players in form who were away or poor over Xmas. Not all pardews fault. He is now taking advantage of the surge in goals by playing an attacking team.

    3) Sunderland are far worse then what they think they are. That is all tha needs to be said. They are the team equivalent of Nicolas Bedner

Fair enough open to the blog.,

I’ll say this.. the opposition are on the attack, its 2 vs 2.. Simmo sees the danger and runs towards the goal line as a defender(furthest away from the ball) is told to do in this situation, the player rounds the keeper, shoots and simmo blocks it on the line.. Luck or good positioning?

Another.. Corner from the right.. Simmo is on the post, a position he has been told to take up by the manager in training sessions.. The ball is played in,cleared staright to a player in the 18 yard box, simmo sees this and takes a step to the right.. the attacker shoots and simmo stops it on the line.. Luck or good positioning

Just admit Danny Simpson is a good right back nothing better, nothing worse. He likes to get forwards but sadly doesn’t have skills to beat a man. Mostly puts in average crosses but makes up for things defensively which is his primary role in the team. He was part of the team who were best defence after 11 games, part of team with 14 clean sheets and 4th in the league. Ever present all season for every game except for one or two where he was subbed off after knocks. Pardew has faith in him for a reason!! He is good.

Regardless I am quite sure he will be sold in the summer and we will have someone else new to support (or criticise like some so called fans like to do)

I’ve been converted to this ‘luck’ campaign. In training the players run round looking for 4 leaf clovers. They then follow the rainbows and on matchday they are full prepared for their luck.

How lucky that when Ben Arfa scored against bolton the defenders had’t been training in ‘luck’ and they had really bad positional sens.. Oh and that the fairies sprinkled some go fast dust on Ben Arfa’s boot.. Then the grass made their centre midfielder fall over…

When i said his clearences had an ‘elemant’ of luck that does not mean its 100% luck.

People always said that Gary Lineker used to be in te right place and that is why he always scored, consistently throughout his career.

Danny Simpson could do te same so maybe we have to wait until the end of next season to see whether he achieves the same amount of clearances. Then we will know if it is luck or good positioning

Guys…surely it’s a mixture of many factors. No one is suggesting simmo walks around the pitch and is conveniently on the line as a shot hit’s him. Of course he’s there as he’s trained to do. If the ball went a few more inches to one side and went in, would it be considered unlucky, bad positioning or perhaps both? In that case I’d say unlucky as he was in position.

I’m pretty sure I remember Pardew saying if we got into Champions League it would not take him longer than 20minutes to spend the extra £30odd million pounds.

    Basically I think:

If we get Europa….there will not be much change to our current transfer policy in terms of signings and how much we spend….and we could lose 1/2 big stars….albeit for good money

IF we get champions league….we will not lose any stars (unless a crazy crazy offer comes)….and we will see much more money being spent!!

VanToonMan…Haven’t seen that myself. Will be interesting to see which players they go for and more importantly bring in…not even going to mention players leaving :)

    He is a nazi

  • 153 VanToonMan // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:25 PM

It’s in that link. Either way our summer should be decent as we have had an amazing season whatever the outcome….but if we do get Champions League…man that Transfer Window will be fun times!!!

A comment of the SS article about Sir Bobbys statue – We could have saved a lot of time today if something along these lines was said

“Yes a great tribute to a great man not just at Newcastle but all over world. I think a statue to the other great manager Joe Harvey along side of Bobby would be some thing we would be all proud of RIP Bobby and Joe”

  • 160 Tsunki // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Just checking in after reading the posts this afternoon –

LewSpi @56 – great scott man! What are you thinking, using irony on this blog? You could get yourself killed that way!!!

Beattie – I am sorry to be the one to break the news to you but you have Jimiphobia. Awful I know, but it always develops after a Ruddy deficiency, therefore the diagnosis is reliable I’m afraid. 2nd opinion? No problem – I still think your ‘ I didn’t think this through’ alter ego was the funniest thing you ever did :)

  • 161 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:40 PM

    LEWSPI

Must say I find your post in the previous topic the most insulting and ageist remark I’ve seen on here for a long time. A lot of over 50?s know a lot more about computers than today’s kids because those who worked in the industry had to really know how a computer worked, not just how to press a few keys. Many others use computers everyday without thinking it unusual.
Personally I’ve been in the computer industry simce 1965having worked in the UK, Hooland, Germanu, Denmark, the USA, SOuth AFrica and Mexico and still earn the occasional crust as a software designer.

  • 167 Tsunki // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Actually Ibiza, in my time I started as a gas engineer, and eventually became an IT Trainer and MS cert Network admin. That’s why I have been up on a roof in the rain fixing dry ridge tiles. Life is crap sometimes. Just to answer your question about where I went.

  • 168 Tsunki // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Beattie – looks terminal from what I’ve read :)

  • 169 Beardosfacedouble // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:52 PM

I am not trying to re-ignite old debates and previous loathing towards the ever-shinking shop-keeper, BUT are we still up for sale? The price must be climbing faster than Cisse’s goal tally

  • 173 super magpie // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:59 PM

    @beards

No, not that I know of and why would Ashley want to sell now? Come to think of it why would we want him to sell? The clubs in its best position for years and are on the rise.

  • 174 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 5:59 PM

If he leaves where will he end up? Surely not Chelsea…or should I say, I hope not Chelsea.

  • 175 super magpie // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:00 PM

He’ll most likely go to Chelsea or man city If Mancini dosent win the pl and gets sacked.

  • 176 Beattie25 // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:01 PM

If Ashley went and we kept the same model he has put in place I wouldnt be too upset.

But I think its likely to be similar to the sale of a player. It’s not for sale unless a ridiculos offer comes in.

  • 177 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:01 PM

  • 182 Tsunki // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Beattie – we could at least do something to help with your symptoms – we could start you on high doses of Discretion, that will ease the problems with Premature Speculation and Conclusion – Jumping. 50 mg of Diplomacy to keep a check on the Judgementalism. It’s a start :)

  • 183 super magpie // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Tbh guardiola, I’m not really convinced he is one of the worlds best managers IMO, he walked Into a world class team at the time and since the younger players have developed more he had a fantastic squad at disposal, it would be a test if he went to Chelsea and had to revamp the squad, although he would get stupid money so he could buy who he wants.

  • 184 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:05 PM

    Bollance…And what a fine schnitzel!

Beattie…Manager of Spain I can see. Is Del Bosque due to quit soon? Mourinho to Barca? I can see him staying another year tbh….I think he wants the CL for his own pride.

  • 185 Beattie25 // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:07 PM

Wow. I know you have done many jobs (as listed above) but have you ever considered writing for holby city?

  • 186 Tsunki // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:10 PM

Geordieviking – I’m 52 and started my computing career with C/PM, MSDOS, crap compilers and BBCBasic. Am I one of LewSpi’s ‘targets’ ? I doubt it, as in addition to saying he was being ironic (THE FOOL!) He doesn’t strike me as being the nasty type.

    Bollance

I would love to sign him. I want that on my shirt.

  • 195 super magpie // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:16 PM

Mourinho wouldn’t go to Barca, he wouldn’t do that to Madrid, although he might have more success there, I dont think he would want to p*** real off by quitting them for their biggest rivals. I think once he leaves real he’ll go to bayern or come back to england, I think he’ll go to bayern because he’s won all the major European trophies and the bundles liga would be the icing on the cake.

2 pl 1 FA cup 1 leagu cup
    1 serie A 1 coppa italia
1 la liga (likely) 1 Spanish cup
1 Portuguese league 1 Portuguese cup
    2 champions league
    And then maybe a bundlesliga

I don’t think there would be a more successful european manager than mourinho if he were to win all of those, especially in so many different leagues

  • 196 geordie1996 // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Would any of you lads/lasses like to see a big named player come in? I’m in two minds about it, as we’ve done so well recently without a big named player coming in! But on the other hand a big named player could want things really badly and play outstanding making the other lads push harder, but could ruin the dressing room with his ego! I would love someone like Eden Hazard or Ardan Turan! :D

  • 197 Indian Magpie // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:20 PM

  • 198 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Indian…you could stretch that question to how much as a manager has Mourinho spent on players in his career. I bet it’s a sickening amount. Sounds like one for Martin Tyler

  • 199 Indian Magpie // Apr 26, 2012 at 6:23 PM

whatever Mourinho won in italy and portugal shoud be chalke off immediately, apart from UCL
