Chelsea will play Bayern Munich in the European Champions League Final on Saturday, 19th May, at the Allianz Arena in Munich – Bayern’s home stadium.
Alan Shearer – surprised at what Newcastle have done this season
Bayern last night beat Real Madrid 3-1 on penalties after Real were ahead 2-1 after the 90 minutes, and the two legged scores were tied at 3-3, with both teams having scored one away goal.
Unfortunately, if Chelsea win the Champions League, and finish out of the top four places in the Premier League they will be in the competition next season, at the expense of the 4th placed team, who will get an extra entry into the Europa League.
That could well be Newcastle, if we can maintain our current position in 4th place, 3 points ahead of Tottenham and 4 points ahead of Chelsea with just four games to play.
That would be a huge disappointment for Newcastle fans, and indeed the first time it has even happened.
Liverpool were in the same situation as Chelsea could be, when they won the Champions League back in 2005 and finished in 5th place in the Premier League, but UEFA allowed five English teams into the Champions League that season, but have since introduced new rules for that specific case.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has been surprised at how well Newcastle have done this season, and especially recently when the lads have won six games in a row, for the first time since 1996:
“It’s amazing what Newcastle have done. I hope I am wrong but it would be just Newcastle’s luck to finish fourth and Chelsea go and win the Champions League.”
“I obviously want Newcastle to finish fourth but I would also like Chelsea to go on and win the Champions League, after the season they have had.”
“Not if it’s at Newcastle’s expense of qualifying for the Champions League mind! It’s a tough scenario.”
Yes it could just be Newcastle’s luck, but we suppose if the nightmare scenario for Newcastle does happen on May 19th, we can always make the target next season to qualify for the Champions League, and that would mean we’d need to finish in 3rd place in the league just in case.
But if we do finish 4th, and say Chelsea finish 5th and the London side are beaten on May 19th – there will be huge celebrations in Newcastle – so that would be the positive side – at least for Newcastle if not for Chelsea.
Of course we are only 3 points behind Arsenal with a game in hand, but to finish in third place would probably mean we need to win three of our last four games.
That’s possible, but unlikely – but there again what Newcastle have achieved this season has been highly unlikely.
Howay The Lads!!
