Shearer – Just Newcastle’s Luck If Chelsea Wins Champions League

Chelsea will play Bayern Munich in the European Champions League Final on Saturday, 19th May, at the Allianz Arena in Munich – Bayern’s  home stadium.

Alan Shearer – surprised at what Newcastle have done this season

Bayern last night beat Real Madrid 3-1 on penalties after Real were ahead 2-1 after the 90 minutes, and the two legged scores  were tied at 3-3,  with both teams having scored one away goal.

Unfortunately,  if Chelsea win the Champions League, and finish out of the top four places in the Premier League they will be in the competition next season, at the expense of the 4th placed team, who will get an extra entry into the Europa League.

That could well be Newcastle,  if we can maintain our current position in 4th place, 3 points ahead of Tottenham and 4 points ahead of Chelsea with just four games to play.

That would be a huge disappointment for Newcastle fans, and indeed the first time it has even happened.

Liverpool were in the same situation as Chelsea could be, when they won the Champions League back in 2005 and finished in 5th place in the Premier League, but UEFA allowed five English teams into the Champions League that season, but have since introduced new rules for that specific case.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has been surprised at how well Newcastle have done this season, and especially recently when the lads have won six games in a row,  for the first time since 1996:

“It’s amazing what Newcastle have done. I hope I am wrong but it would be just Newcastle’s luck to finish fourth and Chelsea go and win the Champions League.”

“I obviously want Newcastle to finish fourth but I would also like Chelsea to go on and win the Champions League, after the season they have had.”

“Not if it’s at Newcastle’s expense of qualifying for the Champions League mind! It’s a tough scenario.”

Yes it could just be Newcastle’s luck, but we suppose if the nightmare scenario for Newcastle does happen on May 19th,  we can always make the target next season to qualify for the Champions League,  and that would mean we’d need to finish in 3rd place in the league just in case.

But if we do finish 4th, and say Chelsea finish 5th  and the London side are beaten on May 19th – there will be huge celebrations in Newcastle – so that would be the positive side – at least for Newcastle if not for Chelsea.

Of course we are only 3 points behind Arsenal with a game in hand, but to finish in third place would probably mean we need to win three of our last four games.

That’s possible, but unlikely – but there again what Newcastle have achieved this season has been highly unlikely.

Howay The Lads!!

    “tough scenario”

It is a no brainer, Chelski must NOT win the CL.

I honestly think 3rd is out of reach but i have a great feeling we can hold out for 4th over thye Spuds!!!

I will be supporting Munich which will be OUR biggest game of the season if we do finish 4th.

The whole of the Toon will be in bars, pubs and clubs watching that game as if it is Newcastle in the final!!!!!

To finish 3rd I reckon we’ll need 10 points from 4 games, because of Arsenals goal difference. As positive as I am, that’s a tough ask, especially against the opposition that we are up against.

I know it may sound like sour grapes, but if a team winning UCL cant qualify for it via leage shd it be allowed in the comp. we toil long and hard (some calling names to management, only some) and now chelsea can take a gamble finish as low as 6th or 7th but cd still qualify.

It shd go 2 the team finishing 4th, no matter who it is, us, Spuds or chelsea thyselves.

LewSpi…you’re probably right. It’s a tall order with our run-in to expect 3rd. We should shoot for it, but I would imagine we’ll get 4th or 5th and have to hope for a Chelsea upset.

    Either way…what a season

Have faith and go for gold! Game in hand over Arsenal must be a win. Lets get the 3 points on Saturday and then its tied with 9 to play for.. Get more than arsenal and we are there. City at home is sold out. Cisse and arfa will be on form. You heard it here! Arsenal will draw at least one game of last 3

i think chelski may struggle in defense at least, will they actually have any CB available??? cahill mite be fit i guess what about david luiz and there going to be missing some steel in midfield, so heres hoping Robben comes back to haunt them!

Indian….It is a tough one. How can you not have the defending champions in the competition? I suppose at least this rule makes more sense than teams winning a domestic cup get Europa, as a team winning the CL must already at least be CL material.

Maybe there should be a play-off game against the winner of the CL who has finished outside of the top 4 and the team finishing 4th?

To finish 3rd we would have to win all 4 matches, and by more than 1 or 2 goals.
Cant see Arsenal slipping up now, and cant see us winning all 4 either.
We will finish 5th anyway, so no problem.
Head out of the sand people and smell the coffee.
Stop all this dreaming and get real.
Pardew has lost the plot and wigwam will probably beat us anyway. They always do.
It could be worse, we could be mackems 😯

its goin to be incredibly tough to get 3rd. 4th place would be a great achievement even if we dont get CL. Most fans would gave taken a europa place gladly 3or4 weeks ago. We shouldnt be worrying about how chelsea do in the final til we finish our season. Keep goin like Pardew says, one game at a time. Next up wigan, will be a great game with two in form teams. HTL

Oh I absolutely agree that our only season goal right now should be to go for 3rd, because even if we fail, we’re pretty much guaranteed 4th. That’s better than aiming for 4th and getting 5th.

Realism is the road to mediocrity.

Why is 3rd out of reach were 3pts behind with a game in hand n arsenal still have to go to stoke a place they don’t like goin to

Indian….I’m thinking maybe you’re hard to please 🙂

You start with saying “It shd go 2 the team finishing 4th, no matter who it is” and then through my own point back at me “but why why wd there be a playoff when the defending champion has 2 b there”

My solution, which I’m not advocating btw, gives an oppurtunity for the defending champions who did not by league position qualify again and the team who finished in the normal qualifiers both a chance.

And then that team would also have to play the CL qualifier as is normal for 4th spot.

The defending champions may not even qualify for the group stages anyway, so where is your point?

No one said 3rd is out of reach.
But it would probably require a winning streak of 10 matches. Which is most unlikely.

Pardew has lost the plot? Where has that come from? It is the six game run of winning? 🙂

Lew Davies….Oh right. Yes, he is a tad excitable at the minute, but you can’t really blame him too much. I bet he can’t believe where they are right now. Still, I think he can get the message across to the guys they need to approach this game as the last 6. Keep the faith

If Chelsea do win the Champion’s League and we finish fourth. I hope we graciously take our place in the Europa League without causing an embarrassing fuss.

The rules have been in place for some time.
Lets be big boys and just get on with it.

I`m so chuffed with wor team these days. Mecannylad is an old geezer now out to grass in the Peak District…. and tingling with excitement.
I`ve got more than 1,000 first team games as a fan at St James under my belt and the feeling of the lads coming good again is giving me a new lease of life. I hope I can survive the excitement !!

In my Football Manager saves when I dont play with Newcastle. Shearer always gets hired as coach in the first season and Newcastle get relegated. They allways gain promotion first year in the Championship, then go on to finish in the Top 6.

In my opinion if you win the coveted title of Champions League winners that buys you the right to defend your title so lets all get behind Robbin and co and hope the Chelsea tossers are well and truly spanked.
As for Shearer, with respect to the legend I agree with check the tostie…say it like it is or say nowt at all!
