Wigan vs Newcastle – Match Preview

Wigan have won four of their last six league games, including wins over Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

So with that form over the last six games,  we know Wigan will be a tough nut to crack this afternoon, even though they went down 2-1 to Fulham last weekend in their last game.

As usual,  Alan Pardew will have prepared the team impeccably for this game,  and we should see Newcastle trying to hit Wigan on the break,  and test just how good that Wigan defense is.

The former Newcastle youngster Gary Caldwell is in the center of their defense, and Gary is the Wigan captain too.

Yohan Cabaye is expected to have recovered from the ankle knock that forced him out of the win over Stoke City last Saturday after only an hour.

Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan are fit again, but are not travelling to Wigan,  and will be available for the game st Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Newcastle have four games to  play in the next 15 days, and we finish the season on 13th May at Everton,  and it’s been an outstanding season for the Newcastle club, who currently have 62 points from their 34 games and stand clear in 4th place.

The lads have nothing to lose, and we have already qualified for Europe – and it’s now a case of showing the fans and the pundits, just how good a team Newcastle are.

It seems almost certain that Alan Pardew will start the same team that rather easily won the game against Stoke City  last Saturday,  and this is the expected line-up.

Krul
Simpson Coloccini (c) Williamson Santon
Cabaye Tiote Gutierrez
Ben Arfa Cise Demba Ba
Subs: Elliot, Perch, Guthrie Gosling Taylor (R) Ameobi (Sh) Best

That’s a strong team and a strong bench, and it will be difficult for Gabby Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux to even get onto the bench at Chelsea on Wednesday evening, in what promises to be a great game – and an excellent test for Newcastle.

For Wigan Ronnie Stam is the only definite absentee this week, and there will be late fitness tests on Franco Di Santo and Hugo Rodallega, to see if they are able to play.

Wigan are 4th bottom, on 34 points from 35 games played, just one point above safety, and have won only three of their home matches, but five matches away from home, including at the Emirates recently.

Wigan were very good at Newcastle this season, when we won with that late goal from Yohan Cabaye after 81 minutes.

Obviously we’d love to see another win today to make it seven wins in a row for Newcastle, and if our lads can play solidly at the back, and Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Ben Arfa are sharp up front, we could be celebrating another win tonight.

Let us know how you think the game will go today:

Newcastle and Wigan are both high up in the form table for a reason.

this promises to be a great game. And also a cheeky wee scout mission too.

Tottenham and Newcastle are weighing up a move for Javi Marquez, 25, after the Espanyol midfielder turned down a new deal at the club, paving the way for a summer exit.

Everton boss David Moyes is ready to snap up Wigan’s Senegal midfielder Mohamed Diame on a free transfer in the summer, but he could face competition from Newcastle. The 24-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season.

    @786

I’ve read your post 3 times I don’t see what the hype is about Diame, he hardly starts for Wigan, so what makes him good enough to play here and for javi Marquez. Never heard of him, could be guthries replacement if he leaves. And please stop reposting as well.

Easiest of the tough games we have left but still gonna be hard getting 3 points on the board

Wigan play a 3-4-3 on the attack which could expose them to our counter. Should be a good game hopefully and lets pray Ba gets on the score sheet

    4 – 0
    maybe 4-1

i think we have the drive that the big boys who wigan beat were lacking
it is however a tough ask and yes Ed, i believe we’ll witness a counter-attacking masterclass. Don’t think they have the defence to handle us or the firepower to inflict much damage

    Ben arfa wondergoal anyone???!!!!

    Sorry for reposting but

    Krul or given?
    Benny or Robert or ginola?
    Cabaye or speed?
    Raylor/perch or Hughes?
    Xisco or andreas andersson?
    Ba or Ferdinand?
    Cisse or Cole?
    Gutierrez or solano?
    O’brien or Williamson?

    Any other suggestions?

And anything less than 3points today would be somewhat disappointing. Wigan would be very happy with a point out of us

Just watching football focus at the moment, they’ve spent the last 10 minutes discussing whether Spurs will get into CL. They didn’t even mention Newcastle! It was all about Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal.

It’s as if we are invisible to the national media!

If we hammer the counterattack it could really overwhelm them. Their defence is no better than blackberry, Boston, or wolves. Blackburn bolton or wolves even. Autocorrect. Benny wondergoal anyone?

@22 its not really important. I think we are just getting sick of being ignored. I read the paper yesterday and it mentioned man u, man city, arsenal, spurs, chelski and Liverpool. I couldn’t find anything on us

Thought you might like this one..

Trialist Rolando Aarons is playing for u18’s today. He is a winger formally of Bristol City and only 16. Also in the team Macauley Booth formerly of Blackburn Rovers.

    The recruitment drive has started!

I have no interest in what the experts say on TV…you would think they would watch a lot of football and keep up to date with facts from the league but they don’t…they follow their own sides and the big teams, that’s it.

They just jump on the bandwagon of people like harry redknapp or teams like swansea….never mention things n merit…just go along with the crowd.

And this whole thing about simmo being statistically the best RB…..I like him nd think he does a very good job but not the best in the league.

Remember guys…..football is not played on paper…its played on grass.

Aye recognition would be good but when do the media ever give that out? Its always back handed compliments and trying to unsettle players

Twitter journos are very complimentary towards us but thats cos they are trying to flog their papers/programmes

@rich i wasn’t talking about simmo being statistically the best rb (Micah Richards or Kyle walker) just wondering if any other player has more goal line clearances. And these “experts” are just biased gits living in a bygone era.
