Spurs had a comfortable 2-0 win at White Hart Lane today, against relegation fighting Blackburn, and go level on points with Newcastle, but above the Magpies on goal difference.
Van der Vaart – scoring after 22 minutes
Newcastle drop down the 5th place, so both Chelsea and Spurs today have taken advantage of Newcastle’s slip up yesterday at Wigan, and gained 3 points on the Magpies.
Goals from Rafael Van der Vaart and Kyle Walker were enough this afternoon to see off Blackburn, who seemed to make no attempt to win this game, and are now second bottom and 3 points adrift of both Bolton and QPR, with only two games to play.
And those games are at home to high-flying Wigan and away to Chelsea on the last day of the season.
Blackburn could well lose those two games and be relegated, and we just cannot understand what the new Indian owners Venky’s have been doing at Blackburn – nothing much good – as far as Blackburn fans are concerned.
They fired Sam Allardyce on December 13th of 2010, and Blackburn have been on a slide ever since under Steve Kean, and the Scot was third in charge when Sam was the manager, and had never managed before.
Blackburn escaped relegation on the last day of last season, but have fared no better this season, and even in this game – when they needed goals what did they do on 72 minutes – they substituted their top scorer Yakubu.
But let’s turn to better things – and Newcastle will face a rejuvenated Chelsea side on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge, and the lads will remain in 5th position – if we can avoid defeat on Wednesday evening.
But we’ll have to play an awful lot better than we did at Wigan to get anything at all out of this game.
But it will be a good test of the Newcastle side after yesterday’s capitulation, and then the lads are at home a week today against Manchester City, in their final home game of the season.
That looks an easy 3 points.
