There is a huge difference in the money European clubs get, depending on whether they are in the Champions League or the Europa League.
The UEFA Champions League Trophy – the European Cup
And all the big money is in the Champions League, which is why Mike Ashley has asked Alan Pardew to try to get Newcastle into Europe’s top league for next season.
Newcastle are already in the Europa League next season, but the money there is peanuts compared to the top European league.
The following information has been taken from the The Swiss Ramble web-site, which is terrific site, if you are interested in the financial dealings of European clubs.
The following information details the funds available in the Champions League and the Europa League, and it’s about five to one in terms of the money received between the two leagues:
And for the four clubs representing England in the Champions League this season, here is information on the allocation of the TV money to those four clubs, with Chelsea top at £29.1M, because they reached the final of the competition:
And the following information is what each team gets in each stage of each of the two European leagues, and you can see there is big big money to be made in the Champions League.
Of course we cannot get carried away, because it’s good being in Europe, and not many English clubs qualify each year – just seven, so it’s great that we are back in Europe again.
If it’s the Europa League, then let’s hope we can have a decent run and maybe even get past the group stages, as Bobby Robson did back in 2004, when Newcastle were beaten 2-0 over the two legs by Marseilles, in the semi-final of that competition.
Graeme Souness also had Newcastle in the quarter finals of the Europa League in the next year, after he replaced Bobby Robson as the Newcastle manager, when we were beaten by Sporting Lisbon in 2005.
In that two-legged tie we had won the first leg 1-0 at St. James’ Park but went down 4-1 in Lisbon, after Dyer had put Newcastle ahead in that away game.
That was in April of 2005, and it followed the fight between Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer in the 3-0 defeat by Aston Villa at St. James’ Park on 2nd April – news which brought shame to the club around the world, we may add.
But hey – things are looking up for Newcastle these days – and it’s positive news that Newcastle are making around the world these days – despite the hiccup on Saturday.

Comment #2I, like most on here, believe that Ba is much more effective through the middle… I believe Cisse is the more efficient out and out striker… However Ba is better as a striker/playmaker… There why not this….

SANTON——COLLO—–WILLO——-PERCH
——————–TIOTE—-JONAS—————–
BEN ARFA————–BA————–CABAYE
—————————CISSE————————
Then you could bring Marveaux on for CABAYE or for Ba and move CABAYE central…

Comment #3Pardew will go back to 4-4-2 for much / most of next season. Why?
1. Its more familar to him and traditional
2. It guards the flanks well
3. It accomodates both Ba and Cisse
There will be no player playing “in the hole” , but Ben Arfa and more so Cabaye, will be encouraged to rotate towards there.
