It seems that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is moving quickly in the transfer market to get his summer targets.
Jan Vertonghen – next on Wenger’s list?
Arsenal tied up German and Cologne striker Lukas Podolski yesterday, and manager Arsene Wenger now wants to move for his top defensive target – Jan Vertonghen.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was at the FC Twente vs Ajax game on Sunday, which Ajax won 2-1, and with it the Dutch Eredivisie Championship – and that makes 31 in all.
The 6’2″ central defender could be available for as little as £7M in the summer, because he has only one year left on his contract at the top Dutch club, but whether Newcastle can beat Arsenal to the player must now be doubtful.
Jan’s Dutch International center-back Thomas Vermaelen in already at the London club, and Jan could link up with him in the summer.
Alan Pardew could also have been at the game on Sunday to check out Vertonghen’s partner in central defense, Toby Alderweireld, and Brazilian center-back Douglas Franco, a rumored Newcastle target, was playing for FC Twente.
Yesterday Arsenal and Cologne announced the £10.9M deal for 26 year-old Podolski, who has 43 goals in 95 appearances for his country, as either a winger or an upfront striker.
This is what Podolski said yesterday:
“Arsenal are one of the top clubs in Europe with a huge history. There are many top quality players at Arsenal and the style of football which the team plays is fantastic.”
Wenger wants to get his transfer business completed very early in the summer, so if Newcastle are really interested in Vertonghen, they should be making their move right now.
