We see there’s a report out, suggesting that Newcastle are interested in former Real Madrid striker and captain Raul.
Raul – Schalke’s legendary Spanish striker
The former Spanish striker signed for German club Schalke in the summer of 2010, and this will be his last season at the club, with his two year contract running out in June.
And Raul has been in excellent goal-scoring form in Germany, and in the 97 appearances he made for Schalke he scored 40 goals – not bad at all.
It is true that when Freddy Shepherd was at the club, Newcastle may have been interested in sign the player, who turns 35 in the summer, and Raul has always scored goals – hitting 44 in his 102 appearances for Spain.
His record at Real Madrid was 323 goals scored in 741 appearances, which is approaching that of the great Alan Shearer, who hit 379 goals in 733 total appearances at Southampton, Blackburn and of course for 10 years at his home town club – Newcastle United.
We don’t think Newcastle will be interested in the player however, and he could end up in Qatar, where he could earn big money to finish off his career, which has been a great one.
But Newcastle are a different club then they were in Shepherd’s time, and Billionaire owner Mike Ashley will not pay big wages to players who are past their best, and are not the long term future of Newcastle.
Indeed, what Newcastle want to do is to bring in young players, who they can then develop into the Raul’s of the football world – that’s Newcastle’s new strategy these days.
So we have big trouble thinking that Newcastle may be interested in the legendary Spanish striker, although we have been wrong one or times before. 😀
What do you think?
