Newcastle Winning The Race To Sign English Midfielder

11:01 am, Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 91 Comments

Sky Sports is reporting today that Newcastle United seem to be winning the race to sign 21 year-old Barnsley midfielder Jacob Butterfield, who is an England U21 International.

Jacob Butterfield – Barnsley’s England U21 midfielder

Newcastle have watched Butterfield for over year now, and were heavily linked with signing the central midfielder in January.

Jacob suffered a serious knee injury on New Year’s Eve, and it’s an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury, similar to what Dan Gosling had when he arrived form Everton almost two years ago.

The news today is that Newcastle are hoping to seal the deal as quickly as possible as Newcastle look to improve their squad for European competition next season.

Butterfield becomes a free agent in the summer, as his contract runs out, but Newcastle will need to pay Barnsley a a compensation fee, since he’s under 24.

In early April the Daily Mirror is saying that fee was around £2M, so Newcastle will be picking up a very good England U21 International for a fairly small fee.

The lad is thought to be one of the best players outside the Premier League and Barnsley manager Keith Hill had said in late March:

“Do I want to keep the best young midfielder in the Championship? Of course I do,” “But this club cannot compete financially with other clubs in this league and we keep losing players.”

“We have offered Jacob a contract but he will receive other offers that are much better financially. I think he will probably leave at the end of the season.”

As long as Jacob recovers well from his knee injury, this should be a good deal for Newcastle.

Jacob has played 100 times for Barnsley with 8 goals, since making his debut in a League Cup tie against Newcastle United in August of 2007, when he had just turned 17 .

Jacob was born in Bradford, and has been at Barnsley his whole career, and he looks a very good player in the making,  and could become a very good acquisition for Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

No idea about the lads skill but that’s a very bad injury and will take time for him to come through…wonder how he will pass a medical

  • 6 Tsunki // May 3, 2012 at 11:11 AM

Personally I have a sneaking suspicion that Gosling will not live up to his former promise due to his injury. And look how much time he has taken to get back o the bench! I say avoid. Too much work, too much risk.

  • 7 IrishToon009 // May 3, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Hi lads, some game last night!
Going over to toon this weekend for the game, managed to get a ticket, just wondering where is the best place to go before a match? Ive been over 7/8 times so ive been to the likes of city vaults, sam jacks, the strawberry, any recommendations?

  • 8 WWJBD // May 3, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Also anyone explain to me why Cisse is expected to get a new deal after he just signed a 5 year contract a few months ago and we have no idea what that contract was?

  • 9 -Tendo- // May 3, 2012 at 11:24 AM

WWJBD – the only thing i can thinkk of is more money seeing as its a 5 and half year deal can’t imagine an extension

Muppets on TalkSport last night saying theres rumours of a 15million buyout.

I will sell my body on the tyne bridge if thats true. Idiots.

  • 12 Robby Bobson // May 3, 2012 at 11:27 AM

    for cisse sorry, not butterfield.

  • 13 WWJBD // May 3, 2012 at 11:29 AM

Fair on Tendo but he could be on top bracket wages already as he was a big price signing with a big scoring record and others sniffing round him. I just don’t see the benefit for NUFC atm in giving him a better contract

He’s happy Toons happy and anyone wanting him will already have to pay out their full war chest to get him. I dunno know he might get one but am not expecting him to

  • 14 wynsleap // May 3, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Have to agree with Tsunki. It all seems one big risk to take just because a player has a bad injury, is out of contract but has a good reputation.
The gamble with Gosling doesn’t seem to have come off and I can’t see him making the first team particularly if we HAVE signed Amalfitano and other incoming players (as well as Abeid, Vuckic etc coming through).
A totally unecessary gamble in my opinion – especially as we only paid £1.5million more for Tiote.

  • 15 Toon_Army // May 3, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Pardew is proving to be a great Manager, the things that hit me lately are:

    1. Moving Ba out to the left is Genius, It’ didn’t do a Certain T. Henry any harm.

    2. Much like A. Ferguson has been doing for years with his Strikers Pardew demands a strong work ethic from them (and the whole team for that matter), It didn’t do Man Utd any harm and is probably the reason Owen spends most of his time on his ass (not many teams operate with strikers working their asses off).

    3. Padew mentioned he studied Mourinio for years, given his formation 4-3-3 and the great players he has recruited for these positions

    4. He has also managed to keep all the squad players on their toes and motivated which is a huge achievement, substitutions seem almost seamless of late.

    5. He has also returned that Entertainment mentality probably only King Kev understood.

Absolutely wonderful, give the guy a life contact and close that revolving door once and for all, with a bit of stability who knows what this team could achieve, Champions?

  • 16 WWJBD // May 3, 2012 at 11:33 AM

If there’s a release clause that’s a different matter but I think NUFC would of learned from the Ba one to avoid at all cost

  • 17 OTP // May 3, 2012 at 11:43 AM

Great showing from the team last night. I’ve only seen this guy play a few times and he’s looked ok, nothing great mind. But obviously if the scouting team feel he’s good then he must be! Anyone know anything else about him? Continuing on from the match preview I done yesterday heres some match analysis v Chelsea! http://one-touch-passing.blogspot.co.uk/

  • 18 Hatem's better than Messi // May 3, 2012 at 11:45 AM

“The best young midfielder in the Championship”.

Get the lad signed up. Right age, unlimited potential.

On Gosling, he’s never had a run of games to show his quality.
Perhaps Europe will allow our young stars to get regular starts.
I like the way Gosling gets into the box, he has goals in him.

    Good times.

One quick question, do we still have any fans who want Perch out? Surely not, he plays with pride and puts his body on the line in every game. I hope he stays at right back for the last two games.

  • 23 Londtoon // May 3, 2012 at 11:50 AM

    Agree with Toon Army

One of the most important contracts to get sorted is to get Pards locked up!

  • 24 -Tendo- // May 3, 2012 at 11:58 AM

Talk Sport said about it- surely that’s enough to think nothing of it! There is no way, come hell or high water that they put a release clause in his contract after scouting him as our replacement no 9…and if they did, they are stupid, and i don’t think Ashley is stupid! With Ba’s i can only imagine it would be activated if we finished below a certain postion or got relegated

  • 25 seantoon // May 3, 2012 at 12:04 PM

Mike Ashley likes a good gamble and if he takes this gamble I really do think it could be something special the lad looked real quality potential when I saw him play early season

  • 26 jimmymagpie // May 3, 2012 at 12:11 PM

What on earth is this fixation with signing seriously injured players? Gosling. Marveaux, and now Butterfield, who I’ve read won’t be ready for full training until October. We will need all the players we can muster right from the start of the season, with the extra commitments, and it is already by no means certain that Steven Taylor will be ready for action in August. Great performance last night, especially after Wigan, but the vultures will be circling around Cisse in the summer. Let’s hope we repeat last night’s showing on Sunday, because we’ll need to to get anything from the game.

  • 27 Rotonda heights // May 3, 2012 at 12:18 PM

Hopefully the gamble on Marveux will pay off as it sounds like he has finally had an operation he should have had years ago.

I don’t see anything in Gosling whatsoever and this Butterfield seems an unnecessary risk

  • 28 check the toastie // May 3, 2012 at 12:19 PM

The lad is 21 and has had an injury and will come cheap, he clearly has ability and appears to have the correct attitude (captain of Barnsley at 20 yr old), he cud be anything and sounds a gud and typical buy,we only need one of these young English lads to come off and we could have a Gerrard/Scholes at our club for 15 years.

  • 29 Rotonda heights // May 3, 2012 at 12:20 PM

perch is a total revelation, unbelievable transformation and better footballer than Simpson and almost as quick

  • 30 check the toastie // May 3, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Just because Gosling hasnt looked gud doesnt mean this lad is the same, if the manager and cheif scout fancy him it should be gud enough for us mere mortals, DO NOT DOUBT THE POWER OF GRAHAM CARR.

  • 31 jimmymagpie // May 3, 2012 at 12:22 PM

Rotonda – agree with you about Gosling. He’s big and strong, but painfully slow. Everton were experimenting with him at right back when he got injured.

  • 32 check the toastie // May 3, 2012 at 12:22 PM

Perch is nearly as quick as Simpson, somebody has actually put that in print, Simpson is slow(runs in quicksand) and Perch is Rapid and Determined, there is some nonsense spoke on here.

  • 33 Rotonda heights // May 3, 2012 at 12:27 PM

    Check the toastie

Simpson is apparently rated the quickest player at the club.
Good athlete, but not a footballer.

  • 34 Beattie25 // May 3, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Just thought I’d come on and start an impromptue clap for Cisse

Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap

  • 35 check the toastie // May 3, 2012 at 12:28 PM

If Man City are going to win the game clearly at the weekend, after 80 minutes they are 3 up or something for example, i say we should score some own goals to make there goal difference even more substantial than Man Utd’s, dislike ferguson even though he has mellowed, still needs payback for chewing King Kev.

I wud love Fergy to feel as though we have lied down for Man city, we wont but i hope in the back of his mind there is just a niggling doubt that we have had him over. Dislikable sh1t.

  • 36 out of toon // May 3, 2012 at 12:30 PM

this could be a new era on Tyneside and i think Ashley knows it. No doubt there’ll be some big teams snooping around over summer but our boys are worth alot and it will take monster bids to pry any of them away…. and if they sell cisse for 80 million buy messi??? (methinks not, ben arfa is better and cisse will score more goals than messi next season)

I think most of the players feel a nufc golden era coming aswell and the whole team is gelling sweetly. Its been posted earlier that even the subs felt seamless. Something special is brewing and it’d take a fool to leave.

Ripper threads today – good to see some thoughful comments and real optimism. Fully agree with Toon_Army @ 15. We need him here long term. Pards is modelling nufc after some of the great teams, ferguson building manure, mourinho’s relentless full pitch pressure , the great bobby robson… we’re building solid momentum

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfKFegqBhmQ&feature=relmfu

i know its been posted before but my heart swells with pride when i watch HBA weave his magic.
    My personal faves:
    1:39 hahahah
    2:57 wtf
    4:26
4:37 (incredible that it’s somehow only the second best goal of the season)

    we’re better than the rest

Rotonda – Apparently?, i can put that apparency to bed, he is not quick, in fact he is unfit currently and slow, maybe he was rapid as a youngster and he has done his hamstrings, NOT.

Athletic my god have you seen him warm up, he cant touch his knees never mind his toes. Reckon he eats more Greggs pasties than Shola.

  • 39 Rotonda heights // May 3, 2012 at 12:32 PM

Gosling will come good, howe many of you have seen enuf of him to make judgemnts,

for 12 years now we have been dished up with utter dross by you know who, he is revered but no GOSLING is bad

  • 41 rich_toonfan // May 3, 2012 at 12:44 PM

May as well sign him, if we can get him for a small amount of compensation worth a gamble of the scout believe he is good enough.

Sure they will have checked medical reports, where he had his surgery, who performed it etc.

And picking up players like this allowed us to get a certain demba ba. It is a gambl and not all pay off but if you get most right like we seem to its worth the risk.

  • 42 Klatoon // May 3, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Think of all the awesome goals we’ve scored this season.

We should do our own goal of the season. Vote now:

Goal A – Ryan Taylor vs. Mackems (Free Kick)
Goal B – Sammy Ameobi vs. Scunny (Left Foot Thunderbolt)
Goal C – Best vs. Fulham (Amzing control, turn and finish)
Goal D – Guti vs. Wolves (Mazy Dribble)
Goal E – Guthrie vs. Blakburn (30 yard smash)
Goal F – Raylor vs. Eveton (Dipping 25 yard volley)
Goal G – Ba vs. Norwich (Cabaye long ball, control and finish)
Goal G – Ba vs. Man U (Turning volley)
Goal H – Benny vs. Blackburn (Amazing run)
Goal I – Guthrie vs. Fulham (Screamer)
Goal J – Cisse vs. Villa (Top Corner classic)
Goal K – Cisse vs. WBA (Neat interchange, passing movement and finish)
Goal L – Cisse vs. Swansea (Dipping chip finish)
Goal M – Benny vs. Bolton (Incredible run from own half)
Goal N – Cabaye vs. Stoke (Delicate half volley from angle)
Goal O – Cisse vs. Chelsea (Right foot control, left foot volley, top corner)
Goal P – Cisse vs. Chelsea (Outside right foot volley from angle)

I doubt any other team has scored more sensational goals in 1 season before.

    My vote is:

    3. Ba vs. Man Utd
    2. Benny vs. Blackburn
    1. Cisse vs. Chelsea (2nd goal)

    1. Cisse vs. Chelsea (2nd goal)

How many players could finish two simply sensational goals like that and using different feet!?

The second the ball left his foot for the second goal i began to question my sexuality. I have now been struggling with this ferocious urge to dry hump his feet now for several hours!

  • 49 Sav // May 3, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Still, we haven’t scored enough of them. Despite a record number of clean sheets, our goal difference still is way behind our rivals. Next year, we need more of the team to chip in.
And typical of a Redknapp to use the word ‘illegal’ as an adjective to describe something being very good.

Iv just seen a news report saying that last nyt cisses second goal was the most talked about subject on twitter lol

  • 75 Ashton // May 3, 2012 at 2:21 PM

If we are going to sign a central midfielder, it should be Jordy Clasie. He would be the perfect signing for us. He ticks all the boxes and some day he will be the best in his position. I’m telling you this lad is special and we should make him our number one target in the summer.

Not sure if it’s just me, but does anyone else look at the teamsheet see Tiote, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Ba and Cisse and just think “Christ we’re good”

    rich

    you missed Krul, Santon, Collocini…

    Christ we are unbelievably good

That’s good news. Not us being linked with Elm but Pardew watching the Feyenoord vs AZ game. Clasie had an amazing game and was by far the best player on the pitch. And Clasie would be a far better signing than Elm. He is younger and much better.

    Good point.

Does anyone know if Perchinho will get a call up to the Brazil squad for the olympics?

Love the reaction of Claridge. Brilliant stuff.

Beattie, rich…..so very true. It is absolutely extraordinary that we have witnessed the rebirth of our club from the depths just 3 years ago. It would be incredible to watch the abject performance against Villa when the side played the most soul-less game ever compared to the spirit and commitment of the present side.

My arm hurts from pinching myself so many times this morning!!

Cisse’s goal has 54% of the votes at the moment

  • 84 ToonDownSouth // May 3, 2012 at 2:34 PM

    Beattie

It’s moments like last night that will, hopefully, convince all those players that this is the place to stay and accomplish something special.

I know that all clubs say it, but the team spirit at Newcastle really is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Credit to Pardew, Carver, Stone and Woodman, as I’m pretty sure they’ve worked incredibly hard on this.

  • 85 Tsunki // May 3, 2012 at 2:36 PM

    1/ Cisse #2 v Chelsea
    2/ HBA v Bolton
    3/ Ba V Man Utd
1/ & 3/ both speculative strikes that sort out a true instinctive striker from one who needs to be taught his craft. Yes, folks, we have TWO of these.
I chose the HBA V Bolton one because Blackburn one had element of fortune just near the end when he cut inside at the post. In the Bolton one it’s the fact that, without breaking his speed he dinked the ball over the last challengers’ foot and put the ball exactly where the keeper knew he was going to put it, but did anyway

  • 86 Rodney Cisse // May 3, 2012 at 2:38 PM

I think we would win most great goals for a team this season.

  • 87 torresmex90 // May 3, 2012 at 2:39 PM

and it’s still not enough!! lol What a season…what a team
Life would be perfect personally if we signed a young Mexican starlet! Until then I’ll have to make due with the Latino flair from El Gago and Colo

  • 88 scottoon // May 3, 2012 at 2:52 PM

One thing that is clear from Beattie’s list, and the many adds to it, is that this side has produced a tremendous number of sublime moments this year. Incredible stuff.

Any room on the list for Shola’s two strikes this year…to tie it up late against Spurs, and the same against the mackem scum.

  • 89 beefman13 // May 3, 2012 at 5:29 PM

beattie, for me i have to say cisse`s 2nd goal v chelsea as i havent ever seen another one like it in all my time watching football, ben arfa v bolton and ben arfa v blackburn then cisse`s 1st against chelsea, then cabaye v man utd. thats my top five.

  • 90 jackkilner // May 3, 2012 at 5:30 PM

im a lifelong barnsley fan and i can honestly say that butterfield is the best player i’ve seen play at Barnsley in the last 12 years. If he regains his previous form when he comes back from injury he will be a great asset to your squad. would appreciate it if you could loan him back out to us though for a season.
