Newcastle Linked With Swedish International Midfielder

2:42 pm, Friday, May 4th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 81 Comments

Here’s another player to add to the growing list of players Newcastle are supposed to be interested in this summer.

Rasmus Elm – Swedish International central midfielder

There is a report in the Daily Mirror that Alan Pardew has been in Holland  checking on Rasmus Elm of AZ Alkmaar.

The 24 year-old 6′ tall central midfielder has played 22 times for Sweden,  and has been at AZ since 2009, when he joined them from Kalmar FF.

It seems that Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is also interested in the midfielder, but if the price tag is high, then just forget it, because Newcastle will not pay over the odds for any  player these days.

Gone are the days of Freddy Shepherd running the club, but Kenny may be interested.

Elm signed a four year deal at AZ Alkmaar in August of 2009, so he will have just one year left on his contract in the summer, so we would expect the player could be brought to Tyneside in a cut-price deal.

In four and a half years at Kalmar FF,  he played 96 times and scored 18 goals,  and by our reckoning while at AZ, the right footed midfielder has made a total of 126 appearances with 24 goals and 29 assists in the three seasons he has been there.

It seems like Newcastle are after some central midfield players this summer,  and that suggests Danny Guthrie will be leaving the club, and Danny has not even been on the bench these last couple of games.

Comments welcome.

Elm is a scorer of great goals.

Btw, I’m sure you’ve all read that the last time Man C won the league title was 44 yrs ago….at St James’ Park!

We have to make sure it doesn’t happen again!

  • 2 Ashton // May 4, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Jordy Clasie is much better and younger.

  • 3 Tsunki // May 4, 2012 at 3:03 PM

Rasmus? Elm? are these names made up now?

  • 4 davybtoon // May 4, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Elm is very good n a bit of a dead ball specialist n can hit great long range efforts

  • 5 supatoonkid // May 4, 2012 at 3:14 PM

just to piss Liverpool off we should sign him but he looks a top player, under 24 so maybe worth taking a look, in Carr we trust!

  • 6 Hatem // May 4, 2012 at 3:21 PM

I’ve seen him play a few times, and what a player, search him on youtube he’s scored some of the best goals i’ve seen. Would be a great signing, FK specialist, and we will no longer lack goals from midfield.

  • 7 check the toastie // May 4, 2012 at 3:23 PM

If either Cisse or Ben Arfa score winning goals that qualify us for the champions league in the next two games, for me it qualifies one of them for NUFC player of the year, the two of them have really transfromed our season in the last three months. Totally class.

  • 8 SBergenwall // May 4, 2012 at 3:30 PM

Quality player, doubt we will get him though, Would love him to play in the EPL and of course I’d love him to play for NUFC, just don’t think it’s realistic because of the pricetag.. But I can always hope 😉

  • 9 SwedishMagpie // May 4, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Very good player really hope we sign him

  • 10 ilovetoon8788 // May 4, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Especially Cisse. His goals have fired us into a champions League contention. We should build a side around him and keep him at all cost. Because if we strengthen our midfield his goals next season might propel us into title challengers.

  • 11 ImightBe Wrong // May 4, 2012 at 3:41 PM

How much would he cost like?

  • 12 SwedishMagpie // May 4, 2012 at 3:47 PM

    6-8m ?

  • 13 SBergenwall // May 4, 2012 at 3:48 PM

I think his pricetag is about £8m, if we could get it down to about £5m we should definatelly get him

  • 14 SBergenwall // May 4, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Yay, mer än bara jag som är svensk 😉

  • 15 Toon Tang // May 4, 2012 at 3:49 PM

has everyone seen this on the cisse goal?

  • 16 keeleytoon // May 4, 2012 at 3:52 PM

whats every one think of this?

  • 17 Thump // May 4, 2012 at 3:55 PM

I actually like it, Keeleytoon. Might actually grab that.

  • 18 ochytoon // May 4, 2012 at 3:56 PM

Its not bad, much better than those “links” I think. Looking forward to seeing the home kit on Sunday.

  • 19 Thump // May 4, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Well, assuming it’s the new away kit anyway… the shop appears to not be working haha

  • 20 SwedishMagpie // May 4, 2012 at 3:57 PM

keeleytoon nice I like it 🙂

  • 21 rknufc // May 4, 2012 at 3:57 PM!/TaylorandBesty/status/198423571956121601/photo/1 new away shirt. when will we release the home one?

  • 22 ochytoon // May 4, 2012 at 3:59 PM

It’s on FB thump so I presume it’s real Thump

  • 23 keeleytoon // May 4, 2012 at 4:00 PM

i actually quite like it too, weren’t too sure at first… but looking at it thought yeahhh its looks quite decent

  • 24 rknufc // May 4, 2012 at 4:01 PM new away keeper jersey. not that good

  • 25 level7wonder // May 4, 2012 at 4:02 PM

Red isnt really a toon colour, even though it is a sort of maroon colour, new home kit on sunday then? Always once before the end of the season all the kits are played in, for the last few years anyways..
Unless they have decided to now grab money off anyone who is willing and keep the home kit for two years.. We will see.

  • 26 JAMSHA // May 4, 2012 at 4:03 PM

    new away kit 🙂

  • 27 ochytoon // May 4, 2012 at 4:04 PM

So we will have a European or alternate kit again next year? When will we see that?

  • 28 Thump // May 4, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Probably in the next few days, ochy. We’ll probably have the home unveiling on Sunday so we’ll see what it looks like then. I REALLY hope we don’t have that kit with the splinters on the stripes…

  • 29 JAMSHA // May 4, 2012 at 4:08 PM

i like the kit its looks like arsenal’s kit

  • 30 mallyonthetoon // May 4, 2012 at 4:09 PM

I think it looks good but then again ill buy owt with a newcastle badge on it

  • 31 check the toastie // May 4, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Like the away kit, very smart, the away goalie kit looks cack thought.

  • 32 JAMSHA // May 4, 2012 at 4:10 PM

exicted how the home kit will be 🙂

  • 33 benarfa23 // May 4, 2012 at 4:12 PM

what bother me is the fact that none of our 19 win games on epl, none of them are a come back, we never come from behind, that raise question of our mentality. so if city scores first tomorrow based on current statistic it will end up lose or draw.

  • 34 NotAGhostToon // May 4, 2012 at 4:25 PM

Question for people, how busy is Shearer’s bar on a matchday? Is it possible to get to the bar and how early should i get there to catch the game?

  • 35 Hatem's better than Messi // May 4, 2012 at 4:26 PM

At least Elm is Swedish and although he plays in Holand … not Dutch …

  • 36 Hatem's better than Messi // May 4, 2012 at 4:30 PM

    The away kit looks okay.

The goalie’s outfit … is nasty.
Don’t they ask NUFC fans their opinion at some stage before manufacturing them?

  • 37 Sammy Adamobi // May 4, 2012 at 4:32 PM

seriously hoping the new home kit is good! quite like the red one but only like to buy home kits, want everyone to see the classic black and white stripes!

  • 38 Thump // May 4, 2012 at 4:33 PM

@NotAGhostToon: All I can say is “good bloody luck” in Shearers mate. It’s bloody heaving on a match day!

  • 39 supatoonkid // May 4, 2012 at 4:34 PM

benarfa23 – yeah that’s a bit strange when we’ve had such a good team spirit this year but we won’t lose tomorrow because no team has done the double over us this season.

  • 40 Rodney Cisse // May 4, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Maroon and Navy classic away top colours.

  • 41 Wor Shearer // May 4, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Shearer’s opens at 11am. So about then.

  • 42 G // May 4, 2012 at 4:39 PM

That’s actually the first away top I’ve liked in at least 6 years. I’ve hated most of the away tops in recent times.

  • 43 ryan toon // May 4, 2012 at 4:40 PM

  • 44 Dannyo // May 4, 2012 at 4:56 PM

The GK away kit is a huge step better then the current home kit. Cause that just looks like Krul is naked.

  • 45 archaeomag // May 4, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Maroon is a good colour for Tiote – it won’t show the blood!

  • 46 tonynufc // May 4, 2012 at 5:01 PM

I got a close friend in the production line for the kits. Looks like Nike have the deal now. Here it is. I love it. Enjoy.

Got mine on pre order with CL badges

  • 47 2_goal_tino // May 4, 2012 at 5:03 PM

    @ 24 – “Red isnt really a toon colour”

I think you’ll find that it is very much a toon colour! It is our history – in fact it was our original kit. It was the same kit Newcstle East End wore – when East and West merged Newcastle United kept the red shirts of the East for two seasons. It was not until 1894 that we adopted the black and white stripes.

It’s not surprising that in celebration of our 120th season we’ve adopted our original a red/maroon shirt!

    I think it’s a great shirt anyway!

  • 48 JAMSHA // May 4, 2012 at 5:08 PM

haha it looks like a fake home kit…hope its not our home kit

  • 49 OTP // May 4, 2012 at 5:08 PM

Very good player, but think he’ll cost quite bit unfortunately. 🙁

  • 50 // May 4, 2012 at 5:10 PM

Mixed opinions on the new away shirt –

  • 51 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 4, 2012 at 5:11 PM

Tony….You have that shirt on pre-order or you have next seasons home shirt on pre-order, whatever design it may be?

Personally not a fan of the diagonal stripes, so hopes it’s not the real one.

  • 52 -Tendo- // May 4, 2012 at 5:14 PM

tonynufc – i really, really hope that isn’t our new home kit. might as well chuck a few zig zags in there for good measure!

  • 53 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 4, 2012 at 5:15 PM

Cisse will make anything look good 🙂

I’m indifferent about the new away kit. Neither love or dislike it, so I suppose it could be a lot worse!

So, on to the weekend, any tactical genii out there want to stab a guess at formation and team?

  • 54 tonynufc // May 4, 2012 at 5:15 PM

Just kiddin about new home kit. Well I hope it isn’t that. Haha

  • 55 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 4, 2012 at 5:16 PM

    Tony…thank god for that 🙂

  • 56 Robby Bobson // May 4, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Well our home kit quite clearly isnt nike is it when our away is puma.

That is some hideous colour, but after that yellow and yellow stripped beast we had in the championship, ill take it!

mallyonthetoon – “I think it looks good but then again ill buy owt with a newcastle badge on it”

lol. I have the electric blue kit in my collection. anyone got the green thing with the orange stripes?:)

  • 58 Spuggy // May 4, 2012 at 5:20 PM

We definitely need some quality depth in CM, Tiote, Cabaye and Jonas run their socks off every game and it can show from time to time.

Quality CB, FB, CM and CF and keep all our players and we have a team to compete in all the cups, Europe and the league. Not far away just need to find those gems. Hopefully we’ll get a stadium sponsor before the summer to help boost the coffers.

    In Carr we trust!

  • 59 Robby Bobson // May 4, 2012 at 5:21 PM

CODARM….gotta be 4-3-3 i reckon, but have a little feeling that Pards will go for 4-4-2 as we’ve beat chelsea away and man utd at home with it.

We’re hardly gonna bully lescott and kompany so really hope we go 4-3-3 and try control the game.

  • 60 Rodney Cisse // May 4, 2012 at 5:22 PM

Home kits will be a revised version of the “spiked” kit that was leaked.

As the two away kits are revised of what was leaked months ago.

  • 61 jimmyxavi // May 4, 2012 at 5:23 PM

I was looking at the manager of the month awards for this season and Alan Pardew hasn’t won it once.

Same old story of people not taking us seriously.. I mean we’ve done all this, this season:

Went unbeaten for about 11 games.. Best defensive record in England still Saylor got injured… Went 6 wins on the trot.. Been third in table. It’s madness!

Oh and I think that kit is nice! @Tonynufc… The official change kit for next season is Puma so I think your mate has been having you on! I’d get your money back if you pre ordered it!

  • 62 OTP // May 4, 2012 at 5:24 PM

CODARM, we’ll prob stick with the same team/bring simpson back in. Hopefully Marveaux will get a chance at some point and Raylor may come on for Ben Arfa as I don’t think Ben Arfa will have much chance against city with Perch behind him! I’ll try to do a match preview/analysis on my blog again for it!

  • 63 magpie6699 // May 4, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Harking back to an earlier thread when folks were commenting on the last time we played Manchester City last home game of 19689 and they beat us to win the title: there’s one thing people forgot to point out. I was at that game and remember it well. I also remember that we had to LOSE that game to get into Europe! It was to do with the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup one city / one club rule; we actually finished TENTH but qualified for the Fairs Cup because so many clubs were ruled out by a higher placed team from the same city! Of course we all remember what happened the following season – we won the Fairs Cup!
So if there’s a parallel it would be if we lost to Citeh, had to enter the Europa next season as a result – and won it!
I should point out though that I would LOVE us to beat city and end up in CL – just thought I’d clarify a historical point!

  • 64 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 4, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Robby, I would imagine we’ll play a fluid formation varying between 4-4-2, 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 depending on the tempo / pressure of the game. Isn’t it great we have the players who can accommodate this? Fantastic days.

Do you think we should go all out for the 3 points or bide our time and strike. I don’t think 1 point will help us too much (could live to regret that statement) and wouldn’t be too disappointed if we went on the attack and ended up losing to Man City. At least we’d have given it a go.

  • 65 magpie6699 // May 4, 2012 at 5:27 PM

    That’s 1968!

  • 66 Spuggy // May 4, 2012 at 5:27 PM

Perch has been a revelation and looked solid at RB his ‘body on the line’ passion could be needed against Citeh.

  • 67 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 4, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Magpie…Interesting slant on some historical stat there. Reading between the lines we’ll either qualify for CL or win the EL 🙂

  • 68 Spuggy // May 4, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Actually I think with Perch’s emergence I’m not sure we need a FB in the summer – maybe just a CB if he can keep his form up, he’s only going to improve.

  • 69 Spuggy // May 4, 2012 at 5:30 PM

Shocking if true that pards hasn’t won manager of the month once. Imagine if we make Champions league and he fails to win it and win manager of the season.

  • 70 Robby Bobson // May 4, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Haha imagine how Fergie would be reacting if that was the case today!

  • 71 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 4, 2012 at 5:34 PM

Pardew doesn’t need monthly recognition, as long as they do the right thing and make him manager of the year. Surely he has to be the front runner? I don’t think I’m being biased, he’s done an amazing job this year when compared to all the other 19 managers in the PL.

  • 72 Robby Bobson // May 4, 2012 at 5:35 PM

Only 48/100 people knew Newcastle were called Newcastle United on Pointless.

  • 73 JAMSHA // May 4, 2012 at 5:39 PM

So now will there be a New 3rd Kit?

  • 74 Indian Magpie // May 4, 2012 at 5:41 PM

I was watching the premier league show and their was a piece on COLO. there they showed that COLO and SAYLOR doing a photo shoot with a jersey. It was chequered up front and totally black from behind.

  • 75 jeraziah // May 4, 2012 at 8:35 PM

I’m a fellow Toonfanatic from Sweden, and I know this player well, has been one of the better players for Sweden in the Euro Qualifiers, and is highly rated in Eredivise. He’s got great touch and reads the game well, and his work rate is high. No Strolla there 🙂 Would be a good buy for Newcastle if the price is right. But alot of clubs have been linked with him in the Swedish media so he could become a bit pricy. If a cut-deal can be made… go for it. He’ll do great at Tyneside.

  • 76 jeraziah // May 4, 2012 at 8:41 PM

And btw. He can play anywhere on the midfield.

  • 77 check the toastie // May 4, 2012 at 9:37 PM

Good inside info Jereziah, need to buy him before the euros, if hes scores against england that will add another few million on, all the clubs who do scouting by TV will be raving about him.

  • 78 ktwgtoon4ever // May 4, 2012 at 9:56 PM

this kid maybe good in sweden but can he cut it in england if he comes but a future talent definetly

  • 79 FAU // May 5, 2012 at 12:06 AM

Elm is definitely good, however the price may be a bit expensive. I hv feeling we’ll be going to Ryan Boudebouz of Sochaux due to their team is relegated to ligue 2, so players are on sale.

  • 80 Sav // May 5, 2012 at 3:01 AM

This story is a load of rot. Dutch Elm would just be more dead wood at Newcastle.

  • 81 RedMissionBells // May 5, 2012 at 3:52 AM

In my opinion, we need to strengthen the following areas:

While we have Best, Cisse & Ba, it will be nice to have a young and clinical striker as Ba and Cisse have African Nations commitment.

We definitely need a strong and mobile centre back since Steven Taylor is prone to injuries. Williamson and Coloccini lack pace against speedy strikers.

    Full Back
If Danny Simpson does leave, we can move Santon to right back.
We will then need to buy a left back. I see Perch as more of a utility player who can fill the gaps rather than as a first 11 type of player.

I really hope Obertan can improve on his cross, finishing and decision making. I have not seen Marv play much so i cannot comment but seems very injury prone. Spidey runs his socks off for us but is that sustainable for an entire season (including european fixtures). We really need quality wingers who can take on defenders.

I feel that our strongest position is in the centre of the park.
We have Cabaye, Tiote, Perch, Guthrie, Ben Arfa and Vuckic who can play there. TBH, I am not sure if we should be letting Guthrie go as I highly doubt we an buy another English player of his quality at the same price. Guthrie is young, plays good football and still learning his trade. The games he featured for us have been pretty good. I hope Vuckic does well too.
