Arsenal Draw 3-3 With Norwich – Door Opens For Newcastle

2:52 pm, Saturday, May 5th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 292 Comments

The stars could be aligning for Newcastle this season.

Grant Holt - after putting Norwich ahead in first half

In a tense game at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon, Arsenal managed to drop 2 valuable points against Norwich City, as the game ended in a 3-3- draw, after Norwich had been leading 2-1 for much of the game.

And that,  after it seemed initially like it was going to be a cake-walk for Arsenal,  with Yossi Benayoun scoring after just 65 seconds.

But Norwich were up for this game, and they amazingly came right back into the game in that first half,  and they were ahead by the break, with goals from Wesley Hoolahan and Grant Holt, who hit his 14th Premier League goal of the season.

In the second half,  things were still fairly even, but Arsenal were coming more into the game, but both sides missed good opportunities to score.

But it was Robin van Persie after 72 minutes who got one back for the Gunners, and then the Arsenal captain seemed to have done the job on 80 minutes, when he put Arsenal ahead 3-2.

But then it was Steve Morrison, who put the cat among the pigeons again,  when he equalized for Norwich City with a beautiful goal on 85 minutes, and the game finally ended 3-3, and Arsenal had dropped two precious points.

Arsenal went close a few times in the last few minutes, but it was not to be,  and the Gunners shot themselves in the foot, and not for the first time this season.

The Arsenal defense again looked hopeless today, with the goalkeeper Wojciech Szcz?sny culpable for the first goal which hit him, before going into the net, and it’s a shot he really should have saved easily.

What this means could be huge for Newcastle, since Arsenal are now only 2 points ahead of Newcastle, and if Newcastle win tomorrow against Manchester City at home, we will go one point above the Gunners.

Indeed it really puts Newcastle in the driver’s seat,  because if Newcastle win their last two games of the season they will finish above Arsenal in the league table, and in at least 4th place.

Nobody could have dreamed up an ending like this one to the Premier League this season, and it’s now up to Newcastle tomorrow to show us what they are made of.

Wow! what a result? Now tomorrow we should really go for win and there in no doubt we can do that. After all we haven’t lost at home in 2012. If we win tomorrow last day of the season is really gonna get nervy for both North London clubs: Arsenal and Spurs. So 3rd place is up for grabs for our Toon Army.
    Simply Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on the lads! We can do this! I couldn’t be more excited about tomorrow now

Sidenote: I would prefer to see Arsenal in the CL than Spurs.

  • 8 GeordieToon89 // May 5, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Cracking result for Norwich, more importantly important result for us.. If only we had of atleast drew at Wigan eh, nevermind.. So ‘IF’ we win tomorrow and Villa nab a draw at home to Spurs we’ll be a point clear in 3rd and 2 points ahead of Spurs in 5th.. going into the Everton game which will be so so so hard and probably one of our hardest games of the season they wont be resting anyone but weve got a good record down there against them so going into the final game of the season automatic qualification to europes elite league competition would be in our own hands which is the best way!!

    Howay The Toooooooon!!!!!
    Howay Villa!!!

So, we win our next 2 and 4th is the worst we’ll do, don’t even need Spurs to drop points now if we get 6 points (Which wont be easy I know), although if they do, we would get 3rd.

Thanks Norwich! Now it’s in our hands…

  • 14 Dannyo // May 5, 2012 at 3:06 PM

Pardew is hell bent on winning tomorrow, his team is, and so should we be.
Two more wins, and we’re back in the CL adventure. And getting through the group stages, think of the money…

  • 15 only magpie of nepal // May 5, 2012 at 3:06 PM

Pardew has said he can’t stop Tiote from playing even if he wants. And player himself has admitted this is gonna be the biggest game in his Newcastle career.
Hmmm…… It means Tiote is really charging himself for some heavy tackles against Nigel de Jong and Yaya Toure…

  • 16 Robby Bobson // May 5, 2012 at 3:07 PM

    Ok on arsenal….

WE FINISH AHEAD OF THEM IF:

    We beat City and Everton
We beat City and lose to Everton if Arsenal lose to WBA
We beat Everton and Lose to City if Arsneal lose to WBA
We draw to City and beat Everton if Arsenal dont beat WBA
We beat City and draw to Everton if Arsneal dont beat WBA

    simples!

  • 17 Solaidback // May 5, 2012 at 3:08 PM

Ideal situation would be for Us to beat Citey tomoz & for the Spurts to draw or lose, then we just need the Toffee’s to beat Wolves & Cessepool to draw with Chelski on Wednesday nite, that way, when we play the Toffee’s next Sunday, they don’t have to win because they’ll be safe in 7th, with Cessepool 5pts behind them & wont need to put up a fight to destoy our chances of getting 3rd because they’ll not catch Chelski in 6th :)

Now that would be a dream come true :)

I can’t take this rollercoaster anymore. Going to put myself in a coma until next Sunday night and accept the final standings and celebrate a wonderful season regardless of our position – WHICH COULD BE AS HIGH AS THIRD!

Now – how to put myself in a coma…anyone have a number for Tiote?

  • 22 davybtoon // May 5, 2012 at 3:12 PM

    Great result

Win lose or draw tomorro we go into the last game of the season with a chance of getting champions league

  • 28 giimps // May 5, 2012 at 3:17 PM

Gotta credit Norwich too, no hanging back for a draw, they should have had 2 penalties and 2 Arsenal players sent off, Im sick of referees this season not giving penalties to lower teams (heres a clue to all referees , if its a foul and a free kick outside the box, then its a foul and a penalty inside the box).
Also, if you book a player for a foul in the 1st half and they do the same foul in the second half, then its another yellow and then a red, not one last warning(to players from the big 4 teams).
I understand the referee is there to manage an event rather than referee the game but, the game will continue just the same if you send a player off.
It could easily have been 3 points to Norwich and I can understand if their manager whinges about the decisions, after all those let offs for Arsenal could cost Norwich 1 0r 2 positions in the league and the extra revenue that brings.
As well as that, the extra point Arsenal got could benefit them by 20 mil.
Rant over, looking forward to the game tomorrow, I may leave a little earlier so I can take in the new statues and get some photies.

  • 29 Dannyo // May 5, 2012 at 3:18 PM

With 10 games to go, we hd us at 69 points for a 4th place finish.
I think we have to one better.

  • 30 magpiebop // May 5, 2012 at 3:19 PM

Fancy us to score 4 or more v shity. We haven’t scored more than 3 in the league this season, so we are over due giving oot a hammering. If we can get an early goal and shity have to chase the game the gaps will open for us to exploit. Cisse and Ba doubled with 4 5 and 6 will be a good bet in my opinion. Also Cisse 40/1 and Ba 80/1 for hat-tricks look good wii Ba saving up his goals and Cisse scoring when he wants.

Drogba to score 1st and sink Liverfool in the final.

  • 31 davetoon // May 5, 2012 at 3:19 PM

anticipation is overwhelming… just need to be 100% solid first 15 minutes.. the back 4 and Tiote and Cabaye don’t roam too far forward…

can’t afford to give up an early goal as we haven’t been good chasers this season

  • 32 Offkey // May 5, 2012 at 3:19 PM

Wor Shearer – I remember JFA saying it before the Wigan game, must say that while I thought it could happen, I didn’t think it was probable. As soon as the Wigan weekend results occurred I changed my tune.

Think the only thing that will take players away from Newcastle is significant wage rises… I just hope Ashley and Lameass have budgeted for some increases due to this year…
cos players will be willing to stay if we can maybe meet them halfway on wage increases

  • 37 Special K // May 5, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Win tomorrow and we ensure 5th place, forget CL for a second but two years ago we fighting to be promoted and Chelsea were being crowned Champions, win and we’ll finish above them. Remarkable, then consider Liverpool and their hand picking of our stars.

We have 19 more points at this stage of the season than last year. Thats unbelievable, even if we’re smashed 5-0 tomorrow I hope everyone in SJP stays behind to clap the lads around the pitch on what has been our best season since 2002/03.

    That said I think we’ll win 4-3 ! HWTL

The Arsenal result should help the lads to focus now they have a real target. I’m not getting carried away about tomorrow, it’ll be a very hard game and all I want to see is each and every player giving their absolute all for the cause. If they do that, I think with 55,000 Geordie’s behind them it could be a very interesting game….!

Good luck and play your heart out, is what i’d tell the lads.

  • 47 josh190889 // May 5, 2012 at 3:39 PM

what annoys me is that we actually haven’t been blessed with too much luck this year… and certainly the decisions haven’t really swung our way.

I was just thinking we haven’t really had many pens decisions go our way this year. I looked it up and I was surprised to see we are definitely due some decisions (hopefully in these last two games)!

    http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Premier_League_Penalty_Statistics.html

    Two things stand out: -

    - We have only had 3 pens all year! The second lowest amount.

    - We have conceded the more pens than any other team

I think we deserve a few pens tomorrow and against everton, perhaps a few dodgy decisions going our way also!

Wanted to ask you for some time… what is the feeling in France on our late surge of form? are Newcastle grabbing the attention of the french football community and really making a name for ourselves?

What do you think the chances are of us persuading players to join over the likes of the london clubs (arse, spuds, chelski)??

Anyone else think we are becoming a really big draw for big talent in france, holland, etc.?? We can offer a bigger chance of first team football, a great team spirit, amazing fans… plus we are a team on the way up

  • 72 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 5, 2012 at 4:47 PM

Josh…I would say so. There’s not only a good footballing plan in place for the future, but it’s also proving successful to date. I suppose the one danger is becoming a stepping stone club for some players, but in that scenario you’d have to think we’d make a nice few quid from such players, so it’s not the end of the world and no club can hold on to all of it’s players. It’s part of football

  • 73 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 5, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Spurs start 30 minutes after us

  • 75 niafron // May 5, 2012 at 4:52 PM

    josh.

People in France really like what Newcastle is doing. But this is classic, this is always the same when the underdog defeat the favourites.

But this is still a limited phenomenon, and for what concern players, they will not bet on a team after just one good season.

So Newcastle could maybe chalenge the spurs on the market, but not Chelsea or Arsenal.

In France, fans tend top consider only four english teams:
Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool. Those teams are called in France the “big four” (people say that in english). I don’t know if call these four teams this way in England.

And now sure, Man city is also well considered…

So Newcastle will need two or three season like this one (or one good campaign in CPL maybe) before having the same level of consideration.

may i also say i think niafron said way back towards the begining of the season if we got the strikers to compliment ben arfa cabaye and marveax we would be challenging for top 4 i thaught he was off his rocker.

  • 82 niafron // May 5, 2012 at 4:59 PM

    Codarm.

If i remember, i said something like that in August:

“If Beny became quickly our leader, if we can keep Barton for team spirit and combine his skill for air pass to beny short play and if we can recruit a good striker like Sturridge, i see us finishing fourth.

We will struggle in the first half of the season, but slowly, we could create a good team play, and if we’re not far of the top teams for the boxing day, i see us making a wonderfull come back.”

So Barton went away, Sturridge never came (and it was not a problem, but i really underestimated Demba Ba at the time), and it was difficult for Beny.

Furthermore, we didn’t struggle in the first half of the season, our start was excellent.

I was right about one thing: it needed some time, but finaly, our team play realy improved.
The way the team is playing now is exciting, this is totaly different of what we seen during the fall.

  • 93 niafron // May 5, 2012 at 5:09 PM

    Don’t know for Marv…

Indeed, he’s a fantastic football player, but two weeks ago, i spoke with a guy who got the same injury.

He simply ceased to play football. For groins injuries tend to come back, you need alot of time to heal yourself and this is a very painfull process.

So you live permanently with the fear of a new injury, and finally, you just give up.

Nothing new about Amalfitano. I read some weeks ago it was almost done, but nothing new since.

Carr came to see him play several times this winter, can’t say more except his club is near to play in Ligue 1 next year, so maybe the lad need to think about it now.

Terrible goal from Liverpools’s point of view.

  • 119 WWJBD // May 5, 2012 at 5:28 PM

  • 120 Spuggy // May 5, 2012 at 5:28 PM

  • 125 WWJBD // May 5, 2012 at 5:31 PM

I disagree on the Jose crack here he is a brilliant LB he is just very attacking though when needed he is big strong and a good tackler

Saying he is half the player without Jonas is arguably true though his replacement is Downing who is utter pony and is a insult to the England team

  • 126 Dai // May 5, 2012 at 5:33 PM

We need to readjust the photo banner at the top of NUFCBLOG.

Cisse needs to be more central and Perchinio needs to be in there.

  • 128 JackButler // May 5, 2012 at 5:34 PM

was more about clever attacking timing and bad defending reading of the game than pace really.

Pardew’s first pump (the poster formerly known as… well this strange name can’t be the only one you got? Is it?)

Simply, the players look like they aren’t anymore concerned about the fate of their team.

So maybe would have said you something like ” good, Marvina dn Boudebouz are availlables!” But having watched the way they behave toward Sochaux, i’m not sure i want to see them wearing the Black n’white shirt. Commitment is important in football.

Ranger scored for Wednesday in a crucial game today. Secured automatic promotion. I say we try and loan him out to Wed again in the Championship. A whole season and see if he has what it takes at the end of next season.

On other side. This article. Thats good for us.

Also Chelsea leading in final. Im backing Chelsea. Only because Liverpool make my p155 boil.

Commentators got it spot on. Why is Kenny playing Suarez as an out and out striker. Should have Judas on to support him.

Likewise Chelsea shoould be playing Torres and Drogba together. Both their most in form strikers. Torres could be the game changer here.

By mystical far away land, i guess you mean Optimism Valley (O.V)? It came around as a retaliation against a lot of negative posting on here despite the obvious improvement of the team and their performaces. Right can someone explain to me… If Chelsea werent in the final today and finish 6th in league and also dont win champ league they would still get Europe league but would have to qualify.. So what happens now they’ve won the FA Cup and Liverpool are already in europe so doesnt that mean that 7th place in the league will be enough for someone to have to go through the qualifying rounds of the Europe League? so that means Everton have everything to play for these last 2 games

after what has happened today with arsenal the game between us and city could be one of the biggest games of the season (IMO).
also i have to admit i don’t know wether i want the game to come quickly or take a long time to arrive knowing the chance of champions league is back in our hands, basically it is a way of saying with our team not use to these battles, results in games like tomorrows become a lot more nervous knowing you can gain a CL position without checkout results around you

i would be happier for him to stay at liverpool as it will make thing get worst every year for enrique carroll and the rest of them plus give us more chance of keeping in the dominant 6 teams.
but he is a dick head for what he did with us shame he didn’t get a heart attack like kinnear. thinks have gone so quietwith him i wonder if he has died

  • 278 magpie6699 // May 5, 2012 at 7:56 PM

I’m looking forward to the game tomorrow – and no, I’m not really nervous. Well, if we were to take 1-0 lead I would instantly become very anxious and start counting the minutes down – even if it’s the first minute of the game! But if Citeh dominate / score I will actually be quite calm – paradoxically.
But it’s not like we’re fighting relegation and I think the atmosphere will be brill. Whatever happens I will be giving the lads a great round of applause afterwards.

  • 279 LGFUAD21 // May 5, 2012 at 8:04 PM

    Liverpool are screwed.

They cant fire Kenny because of the blind faith the fans have in him (and complete inability to see he’s lost it).

This is why you think with your head not your heart. Kenny may have shown real managerial tact in the apst but how can you pin all your ambitions on a man who has been out of the game for a decade before hiring him?
