Newcastle Linked With FC Twente Right Back

8:40 pm, Saturday, May 5th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

We all know that Alan Pardew was at FC Twente last weekend to check out some Newcastle transfer targets in the game with Ajax.

Roberto Rosales - FC Twente right back interesting Newcastle?

Most reports suggest he was looking at Jan Vertonghen, who is also an Arsenal and Tottenham  target, and we don’t think he will be coming to Newcastle in the summer.

It could also be Brazilian center-back Douglas, who plays for FC Twente, and who has been linked with Newcastle for a while now,  or even Vertonghen’s Ajax defensive partner Toby Alderweireld, who also plays for Belgium.

Newcastle have been watching the FC Twente striker, Luuk De Jong regularly, and the 21 year-old has 30 goals in 35 appearances for the Twente side this season.

The latest player we are linked with – from that game – is supposed to be Rosales Roberto, the 23 year-old Twente right back – but I have my doubts about any real Newcastle interest.

I’ve just looked at the two team line-ups for the game, and with Danny Simpson possibly leaving in the summer, one of the two right backs on display could be interesting Newcastle.

The other right back on display in that game was Dutch International, 24 year old Gregory Kurtley van der Wiel, who has played 25 times for Holland, and 178 times with 11 goals for Ajax, since he made his debut for the Dutch Champions back in 2007, as a 19 year-old.

And he looks more than a decent right-back – but there have been no reports that we are interested in this player – yet.

The 5’9″ Roberto who we are supposed to be linked with, can also play in right midfield, and joined Twente from Belgium club Gent in 2010, and he has played 62 times for the side with 3 goals, and the lad has represented Venezuela 33 times so far.

The Venezuelan International played 82 times with 5 goals for Gent, whom he joined form Venezuelan club Caracas in 2007.

Rosales Roberto has one year left on his three year contract at Twente, which could be a reason for the Newcastle interest.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Dont see why we should buy a right back when our left back doesnt have a left foot.

Its something different Santon cutting in now and again, but i reckon he’ll look twice the player on the other side.

  • 4 Prunty // May 5, 2012 at 8:51 PM

I reckon he was scoping out De Jong not this lad. Hopefully anyway! Personally I think we’re ok for RB and RM. I reckon it would just stop the likes of Tavernier coming through to the first team. And in fairness there’s already enough competition at RB with Simpson, Perch and Raylor fighting for the starting lineup

  • 5 MagpiesFlyHigh // May 5, 2012 at 8:54 PM

I hope to be pleasantly surprised by both the incoming players – not sure who we’re after here. I like the quiet way Carr and Pardiola are going about their business.

    * and that we hold on to our stars.

Would love to see De Jong come to SJP..

  • 7 MUTINYbyLEMONS // May 5, 2012 at 8:58 PM

On topic, I though we were getting Cabaye’s mate from Lille as our right back??

Off topic, is anyone else starting to think that Alan Pardew might be a better manager for us than Joe Kinnear?

  • 8 Magpies-till-d3ath // May 5, 2012 at 9:00 PM

Really think we need a striker to play whenever Ba and Cisse are away to ACON.. De jong would be class!

  • 9 woodsee // May 5, 2012 at 9:07 PM

tomorrow is benny boys time to shine, hope the thug de jong is playing as tomorrow is pay back time,2 1 to the toon b en arfa with the winner

  • 10 AndyNUFC // May 5, 2012 at 9:14 PM

We have plenty to fill in for full back. Vertonghen is obviously the sort of left footed defender we need and if he has Krul to help settle him then we could have a great team.

2-2 tomorrow for me but my bet will be on another shock 2-0 hopefully! Ben Arfa and Ba to steal Cisse’s limelight ;)

Gotta feeling the 2 players pardew wants singed b4 they go to the euros will b debuchy n Rasmus elm

  • 12 Beattie25 // May 5, 2012 at 9:21 PM

Wow this guy looks like mr potato head.

I’d prefer Izaguerre from Celtic. Amazing and cheap LB IMO.

Anyway I just hope we sign good players. I trust in pards, the coaches and scouts so whomever we bring in I have no doubt they’ll do well for us. Whether that be this guy or some others nobody expected! Alternativley if Pards is reading this I can avoid further trouble and give you a short list of players that would keep us in the hunt for top 4 next year.

Vertohogen, Alderweirled, Izzaguerre, Marvin Martin, Mo Diame, Junior Hoilett, Ryad Boubedouz and Jay Rodriguez.

Sell Simmo, Best and Willo and that could generate a good 8-10 million.

    Thanks Uncle Pards

Messi has jus scored his 72nd goal this season 50 in the league the kid is not human

  • 18 Pardew's fist pump // May 5, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Yes, Davyb, particularly if a win for West Brom meant they’d pip Liverpool, which is possible, and Hodgson I’m sure would be eager to.

  • 19 davybtoon // May 5, 2012 at 9:50 PM

So glad we didn’t waste 12mill on gervinho last summer

  • 20 supatoonkid // May 5, 2012 at 9:51 PM

If Perchinho plays as well as he did vs Chelsea for the rest of the season i don’t think we’ll need a new RB even if Simmo leaves as we already have R. Taylor & Tavernier to cover there. I think for our CB we should sign Yanga-Mbiwa because he is young, quick, versatile (CB, RB, LB, CDM), already captain of his club & likely to feature at the Euros and generally a superb defender available for tops price of £7M but we could probs negotiate it to £5-6M also think we should get young Ezekiel Fryer on a free so he can provide cover at LB and at CB. Our defence would be sorted with these signings.

  • 21 Dannyo // May 5, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Messi this season so far…: 72 goals, 29 assists. Contributed 101 goals for Barca.
THE best player of all time. The former world record for goals scored in a season was 70.

  • 22 Dannyo // May 5, 2012 at 9:54 PM

So, lads, the “not buying a CB in january” gamble paid off eh :P

  • 23 supatoonkid // May 5, 2012 at 9:55 PM

If we were going to sign a new RB i would go for Debuchy, Van Der Wiel or Clyne.

  • 24 davybtoon // May 5, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Alot of talk about us wanting fryers seems decent from what I’ve seen n we need cover if they feel dummitt can’t do it Who are only real natural left back

This is, as far as I can remember, one of the only articles where Ed has used ‘I’ and ‘I’ve’.

Irrelevant, but worth mentioning, I thought.

  • 27 HOVIS (the poster formerly known as cheick norris) // May 5, 2012 at 10:10 PM

What’s the bet we’ll pull some real corkers out of the bag in the summer. international players and players who don’t seem like big prospects but slot into our team easily (cough amalfitano cough).
    Along with promising young guns.

  • 28 GeordieToon89 // May 5, 2012 at 10:11 PM

I officially take back everything ive said regarding Lionel Messi, Another 4 goals tonight takes him onto 72 goals for the season no player in the History of european football has done that..What a player, Oh and he’s only 24

  • 29 davybtoon // May 5, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Think we will win tomorrow thought we showed them far to much respect at there place n it took them 2 pens to beat us am goin a 3-2 thriller

Also butterfield, fryers n amalfitano would b 3 good additions for free won’t b starters but will add compition n depth to the squad

  • 30 GeordieToon89 // May 5, 2012 at 10:11 PM

I’ve put a £10 bet on Cisse first goal and a 2-1 win! returns me £670

  • 34 yorkshireToon // May 5, 2012 at 11:08 PM

Agreed day, the funny thing is we probably won’t sign anyone we’ve been linked with!

  • 35 Dannyo // May 5, 2012 at 11:11 PM

The match is televised here in costa rica on espn tomorrow, im so happy….
It’s on at 0625 am san jose time…

  • 36 bollance // May 5, 2012 at 11:29 PM

In two minds about game tomorrow. First goal critical. Think we have a very poor record at coming from behind this season.

Hope we attack from 1st minute and go for it. Pardew has shown in the past 8 games he is happy to gamble for the win and it has worked nearly every time.

The big guns in our team need to be firing tomorrow.

  • 37 israeli_fan // May 5, 2012 at 11:34 PM

Messi the best of all time? r u serious?

sure he is a great player, but he play in a weak leauge with the best players in the world alongside him. look at him against Chelsea the other night and look how poor he played against a good and strong defence.

If he would play in newcastle will he score 30 goals a season in the PL? not a chance!

  • 38 israeli_fan // May 5, 2012 at 11:37 PM

off topic.. does anyone know the site transfermarkt.co.uk?

it shows the value of the players..

how come vidic(30yearsold) is worth 30m, de gea 20m balotelli 28m carroll 17m etc etc and cisse is 12m krul 5m tiote 8.5m…. wtf?!?!?!?!

  • 39 Tsunki // May 5, 2012 at 11:57 PM

Because its an outdated useless and essentially redundant site?

1 sleep and match day cant wait to get in the ground tomorrow this is THE one!

    ——————

72 goals in a season. he makes 30-40 goal a season strikers like amatuers. haha. that’s insane and we are lucky to have witnessed a player surpass the 70 goal mark. i don’t think we’d see something like that ever again.

  • 47 phoonck // May 6, 2012 at 6:50 AM

i just dont understand some people.. whats wrong with playing santon on the left?

there are so many right footed players who blossomed on the left and vice-versa, such as Ashley Young(Man Utd & Villa; right footed left wing), David Ginola(Newcastle & Spurs; right footed left wing), Thierry Henry(Arsenal & Barcelona; right footed left forward), Stewart Downing(Villa; left footed right wing), Damien Duff(Fulham; left footed right wing), Adam Johnson(Man City; left footed right forward), Clarence Seedorf(AC Milan; right footed left wing), Marc Overmars(Ajax, Arsenal, Barcelona; right footed left wing), Hatem Ben Arfa(Newastle, left footed right winger) and Steven Pienaar(Everton; right footed left wing)

its how modern football is played now. of cos traditionally it was right footed winger on the right side of field and vice-versa, thats due to the football style that was played then. right winger beating the left back with his speed and crossing in an outswinger at the byline for the old fashioned striker to head home.

now football has evolved so much.. for example, a right footed Ginola was running at the right back, then cuts slightly inwards approaching the edge of the box, the defender’s shld usually be right footed and at this point will usually be caught in no-man’s land(that what happened to Bosingwa when Santon cuts in for Cisse’s 1st goal). Then Ginola now has 4 options: to shoot with his stronger foot, to give an angled in-swinger where the slightest of deflection will be goalwards, to pass in to the centre players or let the overlapping left sided player to run down the line and provide an outswinger cross.

managers in the modern era preferred to play the inside-out wingers, cos they can get more involved in the game in the centre, cos their stronger foot will be on the inside of the field and not outside. and inswingers are more dangerous than outswingers bcos outswingers will be useless if it was accurate enough, or needed headers to be strong to turn the ball into the net. while inswingers can still be directed goalwards with the slightest of touches and deflections(Ben Arfa cross for Cisse’s 1st goal against Liverpool; soft header but still can be guided goalwards)

Santon now is being used as the 2nd winger, no matter if its 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, as Jonas is being played or drifted to a more central role now.

    HWTL

*useless if it WASN’T ACCURATE enough, sorry.. typo

  • 49 cyprus // May 6, 2012 at 7:03 AM

    phoonck,
Well thought out post. Regarding Ginola, he’s an exception, see below:

    http://www.rateyourplayer.com/tv/

“The ability to use both feet does not make you two-footed, it makes you a better … ball situations, many players will use either foot in open play but will strike a dead ball with … I’m struggling to think of hardly any that I’ve seen apart from Ginola.”

That’s why he could dribble so effortlessly. If you’ve played football, you know that we heavily favour our good foot, especially for tricky moves. Shooting with both feet is, of course, much easier, although I haven’t seen many do it as well as Cisse, whose goals in the last game must be the best ever brace scored by anyone anywhere.

  • 50 cyprus // May 6, 2012 at 7:25 AM

Carroll was immense when he came on in the final. Dalglish should ‘ve had him on from the start. Great player, crap coach…

  • 51 phoonck // May 6, 2012 at 7:44 AM

    cyprus
yesh.. crap manager.. i remembered he brought in aging stars to newcastle while managing us: John Barnes, Ian Rush and Stuart Pearce. oh man~ definitely a wrong tactical choices that got them the loss in the final..

  • 52 richardj1986 // May 6, 2012 at 9:57 AM

So pardew was looking at a game… Thus the press link us with another player… I really doubt this one… I have watched twente play a bit this year and he doesnt stand out in the twente team.. But people may see that as a good thing.. Not a poor performer.

Anyway I think Pardew was looking at the match generally as there are many players on our radar at that game price dependant of course…

  • 53 Owldman // May 6, 2012 at 10:31 AM

@6 All the top teams in the Premiership are after Luk De Jong but he will probably end up in Spain or Italy.
