Who Is Perchinho – He’s Now A Newcastle Star

10:08 am, Saturday, May 5th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 26 Comments

James Perch has had an amazing year, and he has put his career right back on track.

Perchinho - Newcastle’s Brazilian wonder?

Perchinho came in at right back on Wednesday night, and had another strong game for the Magpies at Stamford Bridge, but Newcastle fans are now getting used to that from the former Nottingham Forest player, who had a very tough time of things last  season.

Indeed, James didn’t even make the US tour last summer, and it was thought his Newcastle career was over, but he has stuck in, believed in his own ability, and with the help of Alan Pardew, has become a very important player for Newcastle.

James has has had starring roles this year at left back, center-back and right back, as well as looking a very good player in defensive midfield.

James is the type of player every club needs, one who can come in and get the job done for the side, and of course he can do that in many different positions, which will get him lots of sub appearances for the side.

Alan Pardew has today praised the Mansfield-born player:

“I told him what he was doing but you would think in the dressing room he is just ready to go out for a pizza with his wife.”

“He does not get too fazed by anything whether I tell him today it is right-back or left-back. He just crosses his legs and has a cup of tea.”

“He does not put any pressure on himself which comes from confidence in his own ability. I think the fans have brought into that.”

“When you come from where he has come from, Forest, it is not the same as Cabaye winning the league in France.”

“You are going to get instant respect for that. When you come from Forest you have to earn that.

“I think he understands that and is at the top of his game.”

James signed on at Newcastle in the summer of 2010 from Nottingham Forest, for something less than £1M.

Last  season was a poor first season for him, but this season he has appeared 26 times in Newcastle’s colors,  to go with the 15 appearances he made last season.

We’d like to see James get an extension to his contract in the summer, so that he stays more than the two years he has left on his current deal.

James has been a star player for Newcastle this year in many different positions,  and he deserves great credit for that.

And maybe James can even become the first choice right-back next season?

Comments welcome.

On Perchinho – Def worth extending his contract. He seems a top professional that offers us so many options. I no longer groan when I see his name on the team sheet before a game and he’s been a consistent warrior this season. Really pleased for him

Oh wow…1st! How unexpected, I didn’t really have anything prepared to say. How embarrassing. Well, I would like to start by thanking Ed for posting the article and making this dream a possibility. Secondly, thank you James Perch for an amazing season and inspiring this article and thus giving me my moment. Lastly, i’d like to thank my family and loved ones for their continued love and support. I dedicate this to Newcastle United!

It’s been refreshing to see players improving on Tyneside the past couple of years. While we’ve improved considerably in our transfer dealings and overall play it’s great to now see players come in and become better while at NUFC. This shows that the staff at the club know how to bring on talent which bodes well for the youth at the club.

In the past, when we spent loads on already talented players or players who had shown great potential they never played good football at NUFC and the potential was never realised. That’s all changed under Pardew and co, Perchino being the greatest of examples!

Off to watch the FA cup final tonight (it’s on at 2.15am here in Sydney!) with a few mates. Not sure what to make of it. Would hate to see Liverpool win, especially to see Carrol score, but also can;t stand Chelsea.

CODARM love the link best is mick mcarthy and the train from goldeneye!

    Clinta,
I would be glad for Carroll if he scored, he’s a local lad who had no real choice but to go after crazy money was thrown at him. I, for one, was at the Liverpool game (St. James) and felt for him, even though it comes with the territory and he ‘helped’ us win. He’s just a kid, playing for a second tier team, no need to hate him

Perch has been great at helping us close games out, will only improve and will be an important versatile player for the squad

OK Ed, time for Perchinho and ‘Over the wall’ on the Page banner now then?? They have certainly earned a place. You could certainly replace someone who still needs to earn his place, oh I dunno, possibly Megamind……..?

  • 14 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 5, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Lynxie…..we need a two tier banner to fit all of them in. Or Ed could get a little special with it and have a conveyer banner showing them all

I luv James Perch, looking forward to him owning Tevez and Silva 2moro, so looking forward to the game.

Needless to say really but I´m amazed with Perch and his progress. First when he came everything was going down his wing and he´s was literally getting yellow cards every game. Now we´ve a superb player. Reads the game amazingly, keeps things simple and is less liable to make rash challenges. Such an improvement is rarely seen in one year.

  • 17 solano // May 5, 2012 at 10:56 AM

Perch..he is what he is….a vast improvement in the last three months – and it needed to be after some woeful performances earlier in his Newcastle career. This is no doubt due in part to the coaching staff and Pardew building his confidence and getting him to concentrate on doing the basic defensive duties right. Good to see the lad do well.
Having said that, he is in reality a limited player with little creative/passing ability- and while an effective stop gap on occasions in defence, he is in no way, a midfielder of any distinction. He may turn into a ‘cult’ player if used sparingly but I fear a regular starting berth is more likely to show up his limitations which could in turn lead to the verbal criticism he received previously.

some of his tackles this year have been nothing short of heroic. a solid solid player.. the amount of times has he won this blogs man of the match speaks volumes about how much he is apperciated

i admit i was one of perchinho’s critics and i did’t think he was anywhere near good enuff for this club but the lad must of just been having a mare and when am wrong i adnit am wrong and am more than happy to scoff down the humble pie on this occasion , well done perchinho.

Perch is an amazing story; from being a huge liability he’s grown to be a important player for Toon!

How it all happened I have no idea… But I love it, I’d like to see the same happen with players like Obertan, Shola and Gosling but I’m afraid there’s only one Perchinho ;-)

  • 21 toonincheek // May 5, 2012 at 11:29 AM

All credit to Perchinho for coming back from the dead.

Criticism on this Forum was OTT but justified to an extent. And I’m sure he was aware of the comments.

So, all credit to Perchinho for seeing his shortcomings, working on them, and becoming the player he is now.

  • 22 toonincheek // May 5, 2012 at 11:44 AM

Who can take the credit for the name Perchinho?

    Who was first?

  • 23 Hobs // May 5, 2012 at 12:03 PM

    @toonincheek:

It’s a legend now. Legend has no author …

  • 24 josh // May 5, 2012 at 12:49 PM

I was a massive doubters of perchino, but he’s had a stormer of late. Seems to be a growing trend at Newcastle. Proving everybody wrong. Europa or cl, iv enjoyed this season immensely.

  • 25 afroToon // May 5, 2012 at 5:34 PM

@hobs I agree with you legend has no author, lol
