Five Players To Leave Newcastle This Summer

5:53 pm, Monday, May 7th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 52 Comments

We expect at least five players to leave Newcastle this summer, and maybe even more.

Xisco – can we unload this player in the summer?

We expect Alan Smith, Peter Lovenkrands and Tamas Kadar (what went wrong for this lad?) to leave when their contracts run out in June, and maybe Danny Guthrie too, although we’d like to see Danny offered a new deal and stay.

Its a toss-up as to whether Danny Simpson will sign a new deal, but if he doesn’t he will be sold before he becomes a free agent a year come June, and there are recent reports that Chelsea may be interested in him.

If that’s true, and of course it’s difficult to know what’s true and what isn’t with some of the news, we may even get a decent fee for him from the Blues, but only if he refuses to sign a new deal.

Smith is said to earn around  £60K/week and Peter is probably on around  £20K/week if that – so it will free up the wage bill a little, especially with Alan moving on – although he wants to stay on as a youth coach at Newcastle.

The other first team player we expect to leave in the summer is goalkeeper Fraser Forster, which is one reason Newcastle are being linked with goalkeepers, the latest being Ali Al-Habsi of Wigan Atheltic.

And the last player we expect to leave – if somebody will only take him –  is Xisco, who still has one year left on his contract,  and will probably try to stay on Newcastle’s books to pick up the money for another year.

We paid about £5.7M for the lad, thank you Dennis Wise – and we have so far paid him £10M in wages, and this is what happens when you make a really bad signing, and give an unproven player a five year contract at £50K/week.

Xisco made around 9 appearances for the first team

He has been on loan at his old club Deportivo, who were relegated last season but have finished top of the Spanish second division with 76 points from their 36 games,  and won the division by 5 points from Valladolid.

But Xisco made only 11 appearances this season for Deportivo,  with only two starts and just one goal, so we don’t know if Deportivo will want to keep him on loan – but of course they still have the £5.7M Newcastle paid for the player four years ago.

We hope Newcastle can sell Xisco this summer, and since he appeared only 9 times for Newcastle with one goal – which he scored in his first game against Hull City – we have paid around £1.74M per appearance and £15.7M per goal for the Spaniard.

Ouch – why am I suddenly thinking of Michael Owen? :D

So the players who we think will be leaving are Smith, Lovenkrands, Kadar, Forster and Xisco, and maybe the two Dannys – Simpson and Guthrie – could also leave if they refuse to sign the new deals offered to them.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

oh hey Ed looks like just u and me, no one else around :(

  • 2 jesperfuglsang // May 7, 2012 at 6:06 PM

You are not alone Indian ;-)

Ed, that sounds about right; lets hope we are not forced to sell anyone else – we need some balance and stability :-)

I would guess if five are leaving then we are probably signing 5-7 new players come summer.

  • 3 mallyonthetoon // May 7, 2012 at 6:06 PM

Xisco and smith deffinatly need to go however if smith is kept on to look after the youth that wont be a bad move but it would have to mean he takes a major pay cut

  • 4 JackNUFC // May 7, 2012 at 6:07 PM

If no one wants to come in for Xisco… can we not terminate his contract?

  • 5 jesperfuglsang // May 7, 2012 at 6:09 PM

Jack, then we have to pay him for the remaining year anyway.

  • 6 mallyonthetoon // May 7, 2012 at 6:09 PM

Terminating his contract would mean a heafty compo package wich will probs be more than what he would get in pay

  • 7 jesperfuglsang // May 7, 2012 at 6:11 PM

It would be cheaper giving him away; that is if anyone would take him. He wont come cheap wagewise :-(

  • 8 TemuriKetsbaia // May 7, 2012 at 6:11 PM

Xisco? Well Liverpool need a striker. C’mon Kenny I’ve knocked something up on youtube – give us 25m. Ha!

  • 9 JackNUFC // May 7, 2012 at 6:14 PM

So when he was on loan to Deportivo this year.. we were still paying his WAGES?

  • 10 Doocey // May 7, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Tamas Kadar is a sad story – so much potential.

Xisco, not sure what the story is there. He’s caught in between the change-over from Shepherd and Ashley and their policies.
He was young and had potential when we bought him – but we paid too much and paid him outrageous wages.

Guthrie – would love him to stay, very good player on the ball – good backup.

Lovenkrands – No real future at the club, perhaps coaching? Would be good to have him around.

Alan Smith – awful signing. Got a little bit of worth out of him during the Championship season, but besides that, the quicker forgotten: the better.

Fraser Forster – Just plain unlucky. Excellent keeper, just happened to be in the same youth setup as our #1. Will turn out a very solid keeper.

  • 11 Gylfi As Charged // May 7, 2012 at 6:15 PM

The best thing we could do with Xisco if we cant budge him, is negotiate a mutual settlement with him along the lines of: “We’ll give you 50% of your final years salary in a lump sum, if you agree to terminate your contract immediately.” That way, we save about 1.5m and he gets a nice wad of cash and is able to start a fresh somewhere else.

  • 12 jesperfuglsang // May 7, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Jack I would think so :-( sadly.

Players like Xisco and Smith are very difficult to get rid of. Their advisors would tell them to stay to collect more money and only leave if someone comes in with a nice offer.

That is why it is important to stear clear of bad signings :-)

  • 13 JAMSHA // May 7, 2012 at 6:17 PM

put xisco on sale for free or 500k

  • 14 Indian Magpie // May 7, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Adam Maher is in Dutch Squad (provisional), wd be a gud signing

  • 15 Doocey // May 7, 2012 at 6:18 PM

Gylfi As Charged – Mutual Termination.

Would still like to get some use out of him, if its even setting up training cones :D

  • 16 JAMSHA // May 7, 2012 at 6:18 PM

im sure if we allow him for free clubs from league 2 will be intrested

  • 17 Indian Magpie // May 7, 2012 at 6:19 PM

BUY Xisco and get a CD Of toon’s best Goals for the season Free

  • 18 Gylfi As Charged // May 7, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Perhaps whack him on Ebay? All bids welcome or will swap for a Tamagotchi.

  • 19 Grafton83 // May 7, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Xisco won’t agree to a mutual termination, even if we paid half of his remaining contract he would not make up the other half in new wages at a new club. I can’t see him getting a contract of much higher than 10k a week if he’s lucky.

Best solution is to find a loan deal where we at least hopefully get a contribution towards his current wages, i imagine thats the kind of deal we have with depor now.

  • 20 JackNUFC // May 7, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Away from Xisco and who would you lads like to see come into the Toon for next year and who will leave?

  • 21 Grafton83 // May 7, 2012 at 6:29 PM

@Jack, top of my list is a central defender, Carr knows better than me who would do best but I’d take Douglas on a free all day long

  • 22 Dannyo // May 7, 2012 at 6:32 PM

We’ll be stuck with Xisco for anoyher season. The lad is all about the money.
Horribl, just horrible. Can we not sue Wise and have him pay for the final season?

  • 23 Ben3arfa // May 7, 2012 at 6:42 PM

yer sadly Xisco is pretty rubbish , he is a segunda liga player at best .. even there he is struggling to score goals at the minute ..

I do not know to this day what Dennis Wise was thinking paying such an overpriced fee and giving the lad such a big contract ..

We have come a long way since those dark days

  • 24 Indian Magpie // May 7, 2012 at 6:47 PM

    Ben 3 arfa,

may be he knows that and that’s why he is trying to get the best deal possible for himself. in terms of money. He knows he will never get that kind of money again

  • 25 Jim@Goldspink // May 7, 2012 at 6:48 PM

I think both Guthrie and Simpson will leave.

Guthrie was devastated when he didn’t retain his place, after a string of decent performances, when Tiote came back in to the picture. He has been reliable when called upon this season. Some really good performances, some average and some not so good. I’d like to keep him on as a squad player but I think he will sign for a lower half club and become a first team regular. If he signed for a Villa or a Bolton for example (provided they stay up) he would get a good signing on fee and earn more money than he does here, whilst also a starting position.

With Simpson I think the Chelsea story is pure fabrication and we should ignore it. He has had a good season and improved in his time with us but he wants more money and we wont budge on what we have offered.

Thing is both players are replaceable and we have been linked with many full backs and midfielders already. Maybe if both leave it would be good for both parties – the players and the club.

Both would be good squad players to retain but it seems not to be. Good luck to them, they have both contributed this season.

  • 26 Dannyo // May 7, 2012 at 6:50 PM

I find myself dithering back and forth on Ranger. It’s been quiet from the lad since he went to SW. Scored atleast 2 goals there me thinks. He looks like a Drogba in the making in terms of physique.
He scored yesterday, or the day before, and has been a massive help in SW achiving promotion.
Now that he’s got a taste of hard work coupled with success, maybe he’ll be able to turn himself around and add depth for us next season?
Still 4 years left on his contract.

  • 27 Dannyo // May 7, 2012 at 6:52 PM

    @Jim
Aye, both have deffo played their parts this season, but neither are starters, therefor i wont be sad if they leave.
And i also think they’ll both be gone.

  • 28 Indian Magpie // May 7, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Send Ranger to Sheffield again, see how does he do in Championship

  • 29 toonarmydownsouth // May 7, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Unfortunatly i can see us being stuck with xisco for another year if i was shocking i wouldnt be to quick to leave a club that was paying me 50k a week when realisticly i was only worth 5-6 k shame but were stuck with him

I can see danny guthrie staying seeing as were in europe hes guaranted alot more starts next season with our busier schedule

Simmo is all up to him really hard one to judge depends if hes all about money or wants to be part of an ever improving squad

Loverman wants 1st team so hes gone and good luck to him hes been a great servant to the club really us a top pro

Kadar sounds like a write off and hes out of contract shame but thats football

The other player i can see going is ranger sheffield seems to be good for him so maybe he should stay there either on loan or permantly not to fussed really dont think hes got enough about him to help us push on futher nxt season

  • 30 Jim@Goldspink // May 7, 2012 at 6:55 PM

I’ve followed this blog from the newsnow portal for at least a year now but have only recently started to post.

@jack – next season our squad will look like this:

    Krul Elliot Harper(maybe)

    collo willo saylor santon raylor

cabaye tiote jonas HBA oba marv

    cisse ba shola best

also the likes of fergie, sammy am etc

We will lose the dembas for ACON and Best + Shola aren’t adequate cover to put it simply.

One CB to make it 4 players competing for 2 spots. A full back whether Simmo leaves or not and a CM whether Guthrie leaves or not.

    CB, FB, CF.

Douglas, Pieters and a yound european striker would be my bet. Plus amalfatino and a young championship English player. That is being realistic in my opinion.

  • 31 toonarmydownsouth // May 7, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Oh and best i can see best leaving and harps retiring

  • 32 Jim@Goldspink // May 7, 2012 at 6:59 PM

    @downsouth

Simmo should know the grass isnt always greener. SO many examples to chose from.

And yeah offer Guthrie 5k more a year and tell him he will get more starts (Europa) and maybe that will placate him.

Essentially both can be replaced/ Its pleasing to see Ba said he wants to stay (and Tiote a little less recently). Plus its a bit too early for people to be seriously considering bidding for Cisse…

A few signings and retaining, Krul Collo Tiote Cabaye HBA Cisse Ba and we will be laughing for next season.

So many of our first team players could walk in to big four sides. Its crazy.

@jim aye really dont know what the crack is with simmo and why he hasnt signed a contract its a strange 1

On this verthogen lad read that story on SSN and sounds like he trying to drum up intrest in himself

  • 36 Indian Magpie // May 7, 2012 at 7:02 PM

    its late 11.30 at night

  • 37 Dannyo // May 7, 2012 at 7:03 PM

If Ranger keeps himself on the good side, he could be an option during ACON.

    @Jim
Demba has said the quotes in the sun was not from him. He said so on ttwitter.
Personally, i think he’s the player we have the biggest chance of losing.

  • 38 Sheikh MagToon // May 7, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Harps has another year on his contract and will stay. Best will be sold probably back to Soton, and I’d let Ranger go out on loan for at least first 3 months to Xmas as might want him as cover for ACON. Guthrie’s replacement is Amal.

  • 39 jesperfuglsang // May 7, 2012 at 7:06 PM

I think chances are Best will be sold as well.

We might need a Left ACM in order for both Dembas to fight it out for the central position; there will be enough games to go around for everyone next season.

It should be 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1/4-1-4-1 next season for most parts :)

would love to see someone like Antoine Griezmann at our club next season – definitely not out of our league :)

  • 40 Geordie by the grace of God // May 7, 2012 at 7:19 PM

Personally I’d like to see Demba playing in the hole as he did at Chelsea. Reckon him and Cissé have a great connection now.
Ben Arfa and Marveaux playing wide and Cabaye in the middle. Tiote can handle covering the back four as long as Cabaye keeps up his phenomenal work rate.

Wouldn’t change a thing… except for Williamson who, sadly, is out of his depth.

  • 41 supatoonkid // May 7, 2012 at 7:32 PM

I can see more than five leaving, i reckon all this lot will leave: Simpson, Best, Guthrie, Lovenkrands, Ranger, Smith, Kadar, Forster, Xisco (i pray) & Harper (think he’ll want to get some 1st team matches before he retires)

  • 42 geordielad880 // May 7, 2012 at 8:00 PM

I would sell smith, lovo, simpson, forster and xisco, and get guthrie on a new contract, which would bring in around 6m in money, and would save us around 5m in wages also, and we should go out and sign a CB, RB,LB a young back up striker (someone with pace) and a young winger

  • 43 shearer 9 // May 7, 2012 at 8:07 PM

There is no ACON this year it’s every 2 years so no rush

  • 44 Dondatta13 // May 7, 2012 at 8:27 PM

    @shearer 9 ..

They changed it and are moving to odd number years so that the ACN won’t clash on a world cup year.

That means they go from 2012 to 2013 and then every 2 years

  • 45 richardj1986 // May 7, 2012 at 8:51 PM

I am loving the comments on xisco….
Hope Ashley and Derek look at folan and when they sell for next to nothing they add a clause that gives 50% of the next fee/profit. Players change and if he does have talent may be worth while adding it

  • 46 Jinky Jim // May 7, 2012 at 9:13 PM

don’t worry Indian, you should still get a taxi @ that time of nite!

  • 47 NUFCJake // May 7, 2012 at 10:50 PM

I could see demba leaving too if I’m honest, am I the only one who thinks of we’re offered £10m+ we should take it? Real decline in form if he was going to be replaced with a Luuk De Jong type player I’d say good business. I trust pardew and Carr though :)

  • 48 FatmanJoe // May 7, 2012 at 11:20 PM

By my estimation there’s going to be ten players off this summer

Forster, harper, kadar, Simpson, Guthrie, smith, lovencrandz, ranger, best, xisco.

I’d be gutted about Simpson and Guthrie coz I think they still have a role to play and sad to see harper and lovencrandz go after being good servants to the club. Other than that…

Youth players will have to step up next season but I think we still need 6 players coming in to bulk up numbers.

  • 49 Brutooon // May 8, 2012 at 12:59 AM

    1) Xisco – busy kissing all his guy friends
    2) Smith – MK Dons should sign him permanently. Thats the level of league he should be
    3) Danny Simpson – did ok for us we can easily find a good replacement for him. Average this past 2 season
    4) Guthrie/Gosling – choose one to keep and the other to move out.

  • 50 NUFC_Neal // May 8, 2012 at 9:05 AM

    @43

With regards the ACON – Every 2 years but playing again in 2013 and every 2 years after that so that in the future the ACON won’t clash with a world cup year.

  • 51 Owldman // May 8, 2012 at 9:15 AM

I believe Simpson was available for the Man City game but wasn,t picked ,same with Gutherie.Simpson didnt even come on as sub.Maybe this is the end of the line for them at the Toon,If they dont want to sign a contract then lets get rid & use the wages on new players. But where do they think they will end up at surely none of the clubs above us want them.Chelsea are rumoured to be interested in Simpson but surely they have better class players than him for RB position. i think this is another fantasy story dreamed up by his agent or some journalist who has been on the Happy Backy

  • 52 LooneyToon41 // May 8, 2012 at 11:56 AM

As some have already pointed out, it’s extremely unlikely that Xisco will be sold, because of the wages he’s on. Do you think Adebayor would agree to be sold to any team that couldn’t come near his wages? No, hence why he went on loan to Madrid, and now Spurs. We will have Xisco for another year. It’s a perfect example of bad financial management. I have a feeling West Ham will face a difficult period with Nolan when he reaches the last 2 years of his contract too.
