Chelsea Lose 4-1 To Liverpool – Newcastle At Least 5th Top

Chelsea didn’t really turn up at Anfield tonight,  and were well beaten by Liverpool 4-1.

Roberto Di Matteo – two Chelsea defeats in a row in the league

And it was 3-0 after only 27 minutes,  with a Michael Essien own goal, a nice goal from former Sunderland star Jordan Henderson,  and Danish International Daniel Agger added a third.

And just before half time Andy Carroll was elbowed in the chest by Branislav Ivanovic, but Stewart Downing missed the penalty, and he hit the right hand post and the ball rebounded to safety, and scoring penalties has been very difficult for the Reds this season.

In the second half Liverpool gave away a really soft goal almost immediately to Ramires, which is the second goal he’s scored against Liverpool in as many games.

And then on 61 minutes Jonjo Shelvey had the ball in the back of the net following a terrible clearance by former Middlesbrough  goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

Chelsea are now 4 points behind Newcastle on 61 points, with just one game to play,  so that guarantees Newcastle 5th place in the league and presumably a place in the Europa League group stages – at least.

But with Newcastle only one point behind Tottenham and only 2 points behind Arsenal, a win at Goodison Park on Sunday could see Newcastle finish in the top four and possibly gain a Champions League place.

If Newcastle finish in 4th place that will depend on how Chelsea fare against Bayern Munich in Munich on 19th May in the Champions League final, because if the Blues win they will become England’s 4th entry in the competition for next season, at the expense of the 4th placed team.

Newcastle have done phenomenally well in the league this season, and it’s not over yet.

We cannot wait for Sunday’s game at Everton.

Howay The Lads!!

repost in case you didn’t see it –

Dannyo – on Hoilett, yes that’s probably it he’s an above average player with his feet tangled in the seaweed of a decidedly dire crew of sluggers. Now they are gone, down the pot like a bad curry from the night before, and barely a decade away from lifting the premiership title. How the mighty have fallen.

Can’t see us beating Everton to be honest. Great home record and on form. We do have Papiss but Jelavic is on it as well.

Would take a massive effort and some luck.

    Tottenham 1 vrs 1 Fulham
    Everton 1 vrs 3 Newcastle

    Meaning we’ll finish 3rd Boooooom!

MFH – Yeah mate we were staying with relatives who live in Douglas, and we were showing some friends visiting from portugal a quick tour of the west side (best area of the land imo), me and the missus have haunted the area for years because for us it’s way better than the ‘new’ scotland ha ha Nova Scotia. Closest I think we’ve ever been to you is staying in a place called the Royal in Tighnabruaich. Love the place cant get enough of it, but it puts some miles on your motor all right.

Two teams could slip up here, Tottenham and Arsenal. It increases the odds for us if one of them do. But we have to win ourselfes aswell, not matter what happens…

Anyone who watched Arsenal v Norwich wil know that WBA have a real chance against the Gunners. They were poor on Saturday….. West Brom can reallly upest the apple cart on Sunday coming, it wont surprose me to see a draw or home win.
Spurs local derby last game? Fulham aint so easy to beat, and I can see a draw there.
Us at Everton? Well as long as we dont get carried away a la Wigan, I dont see why not. Evertin have one or twoo decent players but are not that hot defending. I take us to win 2-1…..

    Which means…………

    PAAAAAAAAAAAAAARTEH!!!

Used to live near Consett and commute to Newcastle and that took ages…

Ed – if we finished finish 5th we enter at the play-off stage. As per http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/european-competition-qualification.html

There are three places available in the UEFA Europa League:
•The FA Cup winners will enter at the Group Stage
•The fifth-placed team in the Barclays Premier League will enter at the Play-Off stage
•The Carling Cup winners will enter at the Q3 stage

I really like Hodgson, I think he’ll do a cracking job in 2014. Not so sure about the euros, he doesn’t have enough time.

What a huge game it is for Chelsea now on the 19th. I mean, it is anyway, but now it’s either CL or Europa league qualifying rounds.

With regards to Sunday’s games I really believe we can win, but I’m not so optimistic the others will drop points, and if anyone does I fear it will be Arsenal and they’ll draw meaning we’ll miss out just on goal difference.

Can someone clear something up for me please. If we finish 5th and Chelsea win the CL, does that mean we will have to enter the qualifying rounds of the Europa league as 4th will enter the group stages?

And I have a feeling arsenal will slip up.

They have lost arteta….he was holding the midfield together for them….they lost a lot of shape and were caught on the break against norwich.

They have no Walcott…..he is out for the last game.

    they have no sagna…broken leg.

Spurs should beat fulham at home but on their day fulham are a good match for most sides….if dempsey impresses…..which he might really try to as he will fancy a big move, not long left for him to make it now.

We just need to go to everton who have the 2nd best home defence….although if we play like we did at west brom at hit them on them on the break we could get a good result.

this will be one of the hardest games we will have played this season. everton are a different prospect at the moment than they have been recently and winning at their place is always very difficult. i can see every out come other than us railroading it. hope for a good game though and hopefully knick it, but it will be just if we can

MFH – if you’re still there I trust that the party for one involves a single malt. Might just spring for a bottle of Ardbeg Uigedail – if I can convince the C&G to advance my mortgage…. BTW – the ferry on a daily basis? You are my hero! you must have some canny days riding the waeves there me boy ha ha.

O boy I remember Hatem’s beauty against Everton. Would I sing if he did that again? Oh yeah 🙂
