The Newcastle Journal have a good interview with former Liverpool and France manager Gerard Houllier today.
Yohan Cabaye – big success at Newcastle
Gerard had a rough time of things at Aston Villa last year, and after he had some heart problems he left the club by mutual consent, but the side had not done well under his stewardship, and many first team players has been left in the cold by the Frenchm,an.
And he makes some interesting comments about Yohan Cabaye, whom he seems to have targeted for last last summer, but of course he was not the Villa manager when the summer rolled around.
But it could well be he could have stolen a march on Newcastle for the French International, who has been in excellent form for the Magpies this season, and was a steal at only €5M from French Champions Lille.
This is what Gerard said about Cabaye:
“Yohan would have been at Aston Villa if I had stayed there,” “Newcastle made a great signing there because he has settled really well into the English game. He has such a wide range of passing – he can pass short, he can pass long.”
“And he can take free-kicks as well as scoring goals. He gets into the box very well and he is complementary to the rest of the Newcastle midfield.”
This will be interesting news to Aston Villa fans, who have had to put up with a rough campaign under new manager Alex McLeish, and Villa stand in 16th position and only 38 points, after going their last 9 games without a win, and only 5 points.
And we’re sure Villa fans will be delighted that Alex has said the player to turn around the Villa fortunes, is Wolves midfielder Karl Henry.
We’re not sure that McLeish will survive the summer, and it could well be that Aston Villa’s American owner Randy Lerner again goes after Wigan’s top young manager – Roberto Martinez.
And of course Yohan Cabaye is a top Newcastle player these days, playing for a Newcastle side which has surged back to the big time this season.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41WWJBD – The kit can look as nice as they want, however you can wrap a turd in the finest of cloths and it’s still a turd.

Comment #422 days until the match and my nipples have become erect. I dread to think what will happen tomorrow.
Regarding the Euros, have Italy pocked their team?
It’d be a travesty if Davide isn’t in there. He has been world class recently!
Even against Wigan.

Comment #43TADS…on that basis we need 11+ goals. Each player deserves a goal in the last game. Would help with the goal difference too 🙂
Tsunki…axes? Howay man, we use daffodils, it’s well documented 🙂

Comment #45to make my 88th minute winner even more Shola-esque – it will be reminiscent of kieron dyers goal- strangely against everton aswell , from the halfway line, lobs it over oncoming midfielder, runs onto it, lobs it over oncoming defender, then lobs it over keeper – anyone remember that goal, fair few years ago. ooooh Shola Ameobi

Spot on that coupled with his fall in form I wouldnt take him. I wouldnt play Rio either though as he is lost all his pace and his back troubles him during games but I would take him for the experience he offers
