Alan Pardew gave the biggest hint yet yesterday, about a player who may be arriving in the summer.
Mathieu Debuchy – French International right back
With Danny Simpson looking to leave Newcastle in the summer, Newcastle may already have decided on his replacement.
This is what Alan Pardew told BBC Newcastle yesterday:
“We are trying to bring another player to the club who is close to Yohan Cabaye. That is another little connection and a bit of a clue for you.”
It’s not a secret that Yohan’s best pal is his former team-mate at Lille, French international right back Mathieu Debuchy.
And Newcastle have been linked with the player for at least the last six months, and in the Lille 2-1 defeat of PSG recently, Mathieu had a great game and looked a very good player for Lille.
Of course the Newcastle scouts will have seen the player in action last season too, while they were scouting Yohan Cabaye.
And Debuchy is very likely to be included in the French squad for the Euo 2012 Championships in Poland and the Ukraine in June, and he already has 3 caps for France.
Like Cabaye, Lille is the only major club he has played for, and he joined them when he was only 8 years old.
After spending ten years in the Lille youth system, he was promoted to the senior team following the winter break of the 2003–2004 season, and the 5’10″ player made his debut for Lille in 2004, when he was just 18 years old.
Mathieu has since played 279 times for Lille with 17 goals, but he would cost a fee, since he is under contract to the French Champions.
We think he would cost maybe around £6M for Newcastle to sign him, but he was also linked heavily with Valencia in March, and at the time he was quoted in L’Equipe as saying he knew of the Spanish club’s interest:
“I know Valencia are interested in me. But I’m focused on Ligue 1 for now. I want to end my season positively here before thinking about a possible transfer.”
“I have to accept that I am under contract and I won’t make the choice.”
We think the Frenchman would be an excellent signing for Newcastle, and he would fit right in on Tyneside, and would be a good replacement for Danny Simpson, if Danny leaves the club this summer.
And even if Danny stays, he could still find that Mathieu Debuchy has arrived at Newcastle, and will be fighting for that right back position in pre-season.
Comments welcome.

Isn’t Eden Hazard his best mate, hence why he came over for Cabaye’s birthday.
2 rich_toonfan // May 12, 2012 at 3:42 PM
From what I have heard he is a good player….not really seen anything though so can’t make a real judgement.
All I can say from the previous article is that if a player goes an adequate and cheaper replacement will be bought.
Is there much difference between ben arfa and eden hazard??
not really, yet ben arfa wasn’t flavour of the month when we bought him so we got him cheaply. Hazard is getting a lot of press, touting himself around to command a large fee and wages.
Give it til next season then somebody else will do the same and be the next must have at 30mil.
It’s owners like abramovich who look at players as status symbols for the club. If he scouted thoroughly he could find a player of a similar level but for less than half the price.
Some clubs and owners just want to be seen as the ones spending silly money to get the big names.

Him Pieters and Douglas? Would still love us to go all out for Clyne tbh
4 09nufc09 // May 12, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Everytime pardew says we might sell he always says mike is a difficult seller and he wont sell cheap. I cant see anyone wanting to pay 25mil plus out right for one player, we turned down 30 mil for carroll and got it all in one installment plus we got a 25% sell on clause. Im confident if we sell it will be because the player has handed in a transfer request and we will replace with quality. Debuchy would be top of my list for right back, hes looked top class everytime ive seen him for france and for lille, would get in most teams in the pl imo.
Rich_toonfan… Cabaye did an interview a few weeks back and said ben arfa reminds him of hazard and that he can win a game out of nothing at anytime. Both are special players.

I reckon Santon would drop to the bench tbh he is young and has a lot to learn about his spot

how good is this Clyne? Better than Simpson, or Tav?
10 rich_toonfan // May 12, 2012 at 4:00 PM
signing Peteirs is a risk I think.
It purely depends whether his injury can heal naturally or be corrected with surgery.
If it is a weakness he will always have I would stay clear.

Need to tie this lad up quick before Euros start but looks a top player + can’t let anybody see him playing well and try snatch him off us, In Pardew and Carr We Trust HWTL!
12 davybtoon // May 12, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Could b Toby alderweilder we get n not Douglas n there’s a good chance if that happens Douglas could end up at Ajax as replacement for him or vertoghen
13 supatoonkid // May 12, 2012 at 4:02 PM
We do not need Pieters as Santon is our 1st choice but we should sign up Ezekiel Fryer or/and Raheem Hanley to provide competition there (even if we sign Fryer then we should sign Hanley as he will give us more competition in CM as well as at LB/LM
14 santoooooooooon // May 12, 2012 at 4:03 PM
if we can i would like us to sign Vertonghen and Boilesen from Ajax, Debuchy and Hoilett and Jay Rodriguez. If we had Debuchy Santon and Boilesen all fit i would play Debuchy CDM as he is also very good in this position, and we would have two good attacking full backs

I was wrong, he said it here
“I told my friend (Mathieu) Debuchy he should come here. He said he would love to come to England and Newcastle. He would like to come here,” he told The Journal.
“Newcastle now has a big reputation in France. When we play, French TV now shows Newcastle games. They try to show every game and support them.”

Have seen more technique, ability and potential in 5 minutes of debuchy on you tube than in 3 years of Simpson, harsh but true,
Get the lad signed, quite clearly takes our team to a higher level. Stop messing about and sign him and sell Simmo. Tav and Perch will be decent cover, Simpson is so much not required, dont understand why we now havent withdrawn his contract so we can move on.
A gud lad Simmo may be but there is no room for sentiment in football, get rid.
32 Robby Bobson // May 12, 2012 at 4:43 PM
toonking…i aint fussed about how foreign our team is, judging by the price of english players these days.
However, little things like replacing Gurhtie with Amalfitano, simpson for Debuchy/Peiters….
it all adds up to our quota of foreign players we are allowed, so we need to keep an eye on it. We dont want a second squad full of average french players meaning that when we want to sign a top foreign player we cant because of our quota.

35 Tsunki // May 12, 2012 at 4:56 PM
We are probably heading for the polarr opposite of the team of Geordies, but never mind. I think the new academy setup is being constructed so as not to be full of struggling hopefuls but sure fire talent slugging it out to make first team regular. The native talent needs to keep up so tav, fergy and co need to make sure they are up to that standard. Footy is multinational and its a tough business.
36 Dannyo // May 12, 2012 at 4:59 PM
@Tsunki
YES. Gone are the days of the dreams of a Geordie team, it just doesn’t happen.
Out of 25 hopefulls coming up through the academy, only 4 will probably make it in a 3-4 year period.
It’s not good enough. So we go overseas, the demand for high performance footballers is bigger than ever to survive in the top of a league. We’re embracing that now, and it’s about time.
37 WWJBD // May 12, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Perch is a worse RB than Simpson and Tav is hugely untested
38 Tsunki // May 12, 2012 at 5:04 PM
I think the club have pinpointed the fact it’s no good getting mediocre talent in just because its foreign. We have had some real cack. And then we ask our local youngsters to keep ‘up’ with that ropey standard, hence the whole academy is dire. So now we have a clearout, and regular international standard prospects are vetted. This is the new standard so wake up you english wannabees, the bar is a good foot higher, so jump!
39 Tsunki // May 12, 2012 at 5:07 PM

Would like to sign Debuchy, but only if Simpson leaves. Listening th Pardew’s interview the other day, that now sounds fairly certain and would definitely be a shame! He isn’t our best player, but given how they have performed this year it would be absolutely ridiculous to want to sell any of this year’s team especially given we need a bigger squad for Europe.
Anyway, fingers crossed this Summer. I am hoping that Tiote has had too many injuries for any of the big spenders to come in and take him off our hands. Let’s just hope that him and Cabaye are fit all year next year and that could be the platform we need to try and consolidate a top 5 finish.

There is tons of room for sentiment in football.
Shearer would have gone to Manure otherwise and we wouldn’t be signing the best mates of some of our foreign players.
Reckon we should try to hold on to Simmo, but if a player wants to leave either for financial or career advancement then fine. But that applies to Cabaye as well as Guthrie and that’s the problem – the guys we want to keep and the guys we might want to move on are all under the same pressures…

MFH – I think Pards was trying to say that they were selecting players by attitude as much as playing ability. I think they are weeding out the troublemakers because they don’t want to import any Bartons or primadonnas. The facts of life are that ridiculous sums can turn any head, but if a player is doing well here and is happy to work here, and can still feasibly achieve things, it may take a lot to prise him away.

I dont get people criticising teams for foreign players. Sure it is nice to have local talent in your team but UK players are too over priced and over rated.
We watch football to be entertained. Would you rather watch a team of average English players struggle or be entertained by a multi-cultural team.
I know which I’d prefer. Maybe its because Im not much of a nationalist and I fully embrace foreign cultures (travelling is my passion)
Out of everyone we have been linked with I want Debuchy and Hoilett.
Debuchy has pace, looks comfortable on the ball and is solid defensively. His passing has been great when I have seen him.
Hoilett I think would complete the jigsaw here. Reckon we’d be a much more productive team with Hoilett in.

Bayern won’t be playing full team in the final CL – gustavo, badstrube, schweinsteger, etc. won’t be able to play, kroos won’t be playing too I think
127 ToonDownSouth // May 12, 2012 at 8:05 PM
Chelsea cannot play like that against Bayern.
Barcelona only play one way, and Chelsea dealt with it. Bayern present a threat from crosses, set pieces and long balls, where Barcelona do not.
Bayern are an incredible team. They’ve been incredible at home this season, and that’s where they’ll be.
Seing as about 50% of tickets go on ‘general sale’, it’s quite obvious that most of those will end up with Bayern fans. Also, Chelsea fans are probably the worst in the country.

As previously stated, if Simpson doesnt want to sign what is considered by the club to be a cracking contract, he is easily replaced by IMO players who are much more capable already at the club (Perch, Raylor, maybe next year Saylor/Tav) it should be withdrawn and let the club move on and sign somebody in the summer, it has dragged on to long for somebody who has already peaked in his career.
Peoples opinion will soon change when he appears in another clubs colours in the next few seasons and is shown up for being average at best. It is not player bashing if the lad was commited to the club and not his wallet then he would have signed on the dotted line.
Glad he hasnt mind you.
184 Gateshead-Mag // May 12, 2012 at 9:33 PM

imo ryan taylor should be first choice right back atm anyway, bring in a top quality centre back in the summer and stevie taylor can play either or, thats without even mentioning the fact that he could sign a right back.
iv neva been 1 to grief simpsons coz he always gives his all in our colours but i honestly think simpson showed enough at left back at the start of the season to warrent being picked ahead of simpson on his favoured side
for a starter u know hed whip the crosses in which simpson doesnt do enough and i think he complement benny on the right
this may all be irrelevent any hoo being the last game of the season the morra
185 check the toastie // May 12, 2012 at 9:33 PM
Anyway back to 2moros game, it will be tight and kept that way on purpose by pardew, the same old people wil be on here slating the fact we only have 40% possession, however the longer it goes 0-0, the more chance we have of collecting 3 points. Be pateint lads, as long as we are solid it is going to plan.
Come on boys, nice and tight like last week, only 2moro it is us who has the extra quality, can see marveaux coming on 2moro if it is a draw with 20 minutes to go or so. It certainly shouldnt finish a draw thats for sure. Sh1t or bust late on.

187 check the toastie // May 12, 2012 at 9:39 PM
yep gateshead i agree i fancied Raylor swapping early season and playing santon earlier than he was introduced, however now perch has proven how accomplished he is on the ball i think he offers more pace and defensive strength than Raylor, think Raylors new backup role is sitting in front of the back 4, like he did against Chelsea after Tiotes injury.
Think Pardew realised Perch is only a defensive midfielder to shut games down as a sub, after the 1st half of the bolton game and the spurs away game were he quite clearly showed his limitations in that role. Perch is 1st choice RB for me and rightly so after his contribution this year.

Everybody had an early noght, psyche themselves up for tomorrow, tough game everton conceded 1 goal at home in the last 5 games, thats the measure of the task for all those we will win 4-0 merchants.
Fancy Cisse 2-1 myself, however cant see the other team slipping up, you never know though. Looking forward to the summer,
List of hopeful departures to raise funds – Simpson, Guthrie (unfortunately free), Best (done well for us), Raylor (unlikely, holding up Abeids/vuckics/Tavs development), Obertan (unlikely, unsure of the boys commitment to the cause), Gosling (showed nothing so far), a couple of random ones threw in there but IMO these players will never be gud enough to take the squad forward, time to improve the pace, technical ability and energy of the squad.

Problem is we also have to cover possible departures of top flight players for bigger money – if not bigger glory.

197 Tsunki // May 12, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Resolve required. This must be the hardest game to play without letting it all mess with your head. The lads need full concentration and not care about the other results. So what if spuds are 2-0 up with 5 minutes to go, get yer heads down lads and push on. This is the last game and it is a cup final if ever there was one, its all to win, plus we have more to gain than them.

tsunki – you know what that subbing Benny after 70 minutes is really annoying, last week, 1-0 down against City and he pulls Benny off, still have my doubts about Benny’s and Pardews relationship.
I do think Pardew asks too much of Benny defensively most of the time, i know he has to get goal side but sometimes cut the lad some slack, he is devastating if picking the ball up in space, which he cant do on the edge of his own box.
Belfast wrong person to ask regarding defending Simmo.
