Pardew Disappointed At Set Plays – Wants Goalscoring Center-Back

Last season Newcastle were very good at set plays,  and got a number of goals from corners and free kicks.

Douglas – FC Twente 6’4″ Brazilian center-back

Of course it helped  when  Andy Carroll was at the club, and he could get to the balls with his head,  and often knock them down for other players to put the ball into the back of  the net.

But  this season, even Steven Taylor when he was fit, was not able to score from set-plays, Mike Williamson has still to score his first goal for the club, and Fabricio Coloccini has only one goal in his 38 appearances for the club this season.

So it seems that Newcastle may even bring in a center-back  in the summer, who can get some goals from set-plays- and this is how Alan Pardew explained the situation:

“Set plays have been really disappointing this year and I am contemplating bringing in someone because we don’t have a dominant header of the ball,”

“On the scouting front, we are looking at a centre-half who can come and score us eight goals next season.”

“We are saying to Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson, ‘Are you going to bring that for us’, and putting a bit of pressure on those guys to improve.”

Newcastle’s scouting team have been looking at a number of targets at center-back this season, and we think 6’4″ Douglas of FC Twente, is probably the best header of the ball.

By our reckoning Douglas has played 189 times for FC Twente in all competitions with 13 goals, so that’s not really a whole load of goals from the Brazilian, but he could also be setting the goals up from set-plays too.

It’s a better record than Fabricio’s record, and the Argentine has 5 goals in 153 appearances for the Magpies, and Steven Taylor has 13 goals in 196 appearance for his local club.

What do you think?

Alan Pardew: “If we didn’t have Demba Ba we wouldn’t have Papiss Cisse and we are trying to bring another player to the club who is close to Yohan Cabaye. That is another little connection and a bit of a clue for you”

Mathieu Debuchy is one of them I think. He’s played with Yohan before and can deputise for a right back too. He’s a bit of a Tiote player who can pop in a goal now and then but He’ll be good with Yohan.

I still don’t know who the centre back is yet though. Perhaps Adil Rami because he was at Lille but in a dream world I’d like Mamadou Sakho, doubt that would happen.

Its got to be Vertonghen or Aldereweild. We have to do all we can to get them at the club. Vertonghen and Cissokho would be ideal signings. The rest would be signed as squad players.

We’re currently relying to heavily on our strikers to put the ball in the net, we don’t have many goals coming from MF or our defenders (btw, I’m classing HBA as a 3rd strikers ok for this part), so we really need Cabaye to push on & get more goals & get, not just our defenders to score more in set plays but also our wingers should be chipping in with a few, like Bale & Lennon do at the Spurts….

Out of the 51 league goals we’ve scored this season, this is the breakdown of who scored what:

    Demba – 16
    Cisse – 13
    HBA – 5
    Best – 4
    Strola – 2
    TOTAL – 36

    Cabaye – 4
    Jonas – 2
    Gutherie – 1
    Obertan – 1
    Raylor – 1
    Gosling – 1
    TOTAL – 10

Don’t forget, 4 own goals in our favour too… so in fact apart from Cabaye, our midfield & defence are lacking in the goal scoring stakes, big time….. 🙁

I reckon we need a Marvin Martin typed played (a playmaker). Hoilett and Diame are essential signings as well.

I think if we make CL, we’ll enter the race for Vertonghen, if not, I think Douglas is our man.

It’s obviously Debuchy we’re pursuing for RB – would be a top signing and a definite upgrade on Simpson.

I’m glad someone agrees on Mathieu Debuchy. He’s a quality player and much much much better than donkey simpson.

So hope we go and get Douglas!

Prefer him to Pieters deffo, although we,ll need to wait till August for Douglas but that need,nt be a problem.

Debuchy is more or less a cert as is this lad Roman Amiteranimano of summit like that!

If we shelve out money for any one player i would like us to go for Oussama Aissidi or Eljero Elia! Or Both!

Simpson ,Guthrie and Best are expected to go, probably to Villa! Of these Bestie will be the biggest miss having played some good games for us in the past!

Am concerned though about offers for some of our best players which will be coming up in the next few weeks!

Well he’s going to be the French first-choice RB at the Euros, which many have been calling for even before Sagna’s injury, has 2 assists for his country in the 3 caps he’s gained, has won trophies in the same team as Cabaye and has been watched by numerous top clubs – a definite step up in class from Simpson, who is ordinary.

Saw an intersting fact this morning somewhere on a Match Preview for tomorrow.

We are apparantly the only team not to have scored and Own goal in the League this year! Not sure if this is true or not?

Toon Doon Sooth – Yeah yer right, my bad… but it still shows where all our goals are coming from tho, up top, which I suppose is where they’re supposed to come from but as stated by Pards, last season we scored:

    Carroll – 11
    Strole – 6
    Lover – 6
    Best – 6
    HBA – 1
    TOTAL – 30

    Nolan – 12
    Barton – 6
    Jonas – 3
    Tiote – 1
    TOTAL – 22

    Saylor – 3
    Colo – 2
    TOTAL – 5

Plus 1 own goals in our favour…. so 55 goals this season & 57 last season but as you can see, more goals came from MF & Defence… which is what Pardew is saying…:(

I am not at all seeing this as a real possibility, given all the rosy things he has said about Spurs recently, but the one CB that has actually scored 8 goals this season is – wait for it – Jan Vertonghen ..
We are probably not gonna be able to land him, but when listening to the interview yesterday, I still found myself thinking – well, well .. Why the h*ll not?

Although I think Debuchy might be a good player, I’d rather us go for Cissokho as he is a left-sided defender (left-footed). We need a bit of balance at the back. We still have a chance of getting 4th, but we need to beat Everton. I don’t care if we play bad, as long as we win. Arsenal will find it tough against West Brom.

Cissokho is a klutz and a bit of a joke figure in French football. He’d soon fix our immaculate own-goal record, given he’s scored at least 3 this season on his own!

Doesn’t Cissokho hold the record for the most ‘own goals’ in a season, I think its 4 or summit like that?? don’t quote me on that, I’m sure I read it somewhere… lol 🙁

The reason that the centre halves don’t score goals is the same reason why we are so vulnerable from set pieces in our own area. Both Colo and Willo are weak under the high ball when under pressure. Colo lacks height and physical strength, and Willo can’t jump, being outjumped by Moses at Wigan for God’s sake. Add the fact that Simpson is a short-a-se, and you see why so many goals against us are as a result of the cross ball in the air. This, and the obvious lack of pace of the 3 players mentioned were the principal reasons for the goals against column taking a battering, especially after we lost the physicality of Saylor. Hopefully the soon to be confirmed arrivals of Debuchy and Douglas will go some way to rectifying these weaknesses, as a team in our league position should have a far superior goal difference to the one we have. Before we start slagging off J for A, let’s wait till 1st September and see who we still have at the club, because NONE OF US are 100% sure what the owner will do when the offers undoubtedly start coming in!

Cissokho’s just been unlucky. He has the ability to be the best left back in the world. He’s still young and is immense on the ball. We’ll be creating more chances with him in the team. I’ve seen his own goals and they were extremely unlucky. A few took wikid deflections off him and went in. Cissokho is a bums on seat signing in comparison with Pieters.

2 goals is not much less scored, I see and agree about we need more goals in defence and midfield
But we have tighten up in defence 15 clean sheets
Arsenal, Bolton x2, Blackburn, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Norwich, QPR x2, Swansea x2, Stoke, Wigan & Sunderland

Douglas’ goalscoring record isn’t exactly intimidating so makes you wonder if this is who Pardew is talking about…
Debuchy would be really exciting to get in although we might get left a bit exposed on that flank with HBA.
I wouldn’t be disappointed to see the less exciting Pieters come in on the left to allow Santon to play on the right. Pieters is versatile enough to play in the centre and good and tall for defending crosses. He’s also Krul’s mate so might make Tim want to stay even if a bid came in. Otherwise Boilesen might still be of interest.
